Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Objective:
Latinx asylum-seeking families report posttraumatic distress that is 161–204% higher than in non-immigrants, with adverse consequences for health and well-being. Recent U.S. policies have further embedded trauma in the asylum-seeking process by forcing families to remain in Mexico, enduring dire living conditions in tent encampments near the border while awaiting processing. These families are now entering the United States in large numbers. This article sheds light on their recent experiences and mental health needs, using a mixed methods-grounded theory design, presenting quantitative and qualitative data to describe the experiences of six asylum-seeking families who waited for 1–2 years in …

The goal of the book is to get readers to exercise a certain level of humility, to reflect on and accept responsibility, in order to enact …

This article joins a vibrant conversation in American literary studies about the contribution of female playwrights to dramaturgy as well as the feminist movement in the early twentieth century. In addition to assessing their contribution to American drama, the article extends the discussion to study how these female dramatists reflected the status of women in contemporary societies. We argue that the selected works of Susan Glaspell’s Trifles (1916) and Bernice (1917), Lorraine Hansberrys A Raisin in the Sun (1959), and Rachel Crothers’ A Mans World (1910) reveal a process, a transformation, a theatrical presentation of the development of female awareness …

A Case Study Exploring Effective Pedagogical Practices In Teaching Art And Design Hearing-Impaired Students In Bahrain, S. Al Hashimi
Information Sciences Letters
Although the education of hearing-impaired students has significantly progressed towards achieving quality education in many countries, it is not yet clear in Bahrain how their education should be managed. There is a scarcity of research about the way that art and design can effectively be taught to the deaf. Moreover, there seems to be a misconception that art and design can be easily taught to people with hearing impairments. However, there may be challenges that could prove this assumption to be incorrect. Therefore, this paper attempts to examine the challenges faced by hearing-impaired students and to recommend how best educators …

Employing Ai Applications To Authenticate People Through Neural Networks, S. Aldawsari
Information Sciences Letters
Artificial intelligence is used to develop techniques for verifying people by sensory factors. This article aims to design a robot to verify the entry of the authorized persons to the firms. This paper uses neural networks with artificial intelligence applications to authenticate people, while the program is based on testing four factors: the face, eye, voice, and handprint. The AI application depends on a mathematical algorithm to test the authority of staff; meanwhile, neural networks analyse and examine the visual systems that connect imaging devices (camera) with a computer. Moreover, this is done through the huge amount of data in …
Sociocultural And Social Cognitive Theories: Historical And Current Practices For Students With Emotional And Behavioural Disorder (Ebd), J. A. Alnoaim
Information Sciences Letters
The achievements in the study of human social and cognitive learning development are not ascribed to a single individual or theorist. This paper will examine how the theories promoted by Vygotsky and Bandura promote the foundation for the use of high leverage practices with students who display challenging behaviors in the classroom. Specifically, examining the major theoretical concepts of their work has allowed educators and others to develop classroom and behavioral management strategies that are effective for students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD). The two theoretical concepts of sociocultural development theory and social cognitive theory have both been shown …

State-Of-The-Art: Assessing Semantic Similarity In Automated Short-Answer Grading Systems, Zaira Hassan Amur, Yew Kwang Hooi
Information Sciences Letters
The use of semantic in Natural Language Processing (NLP) has sparked the interest of academics and businesses in various fields. One such field is Automated Short-answer Grading Systems (ASAGS) for automatically evaluating responses for similarity with the expected answer. ASAGS poses semantic challenges because the responses of a topic are in the responder’s own words. This study is providing an in-depth analysis of work to improve the assessment of semantic similarity between corpora in natural language in the context of ASAGS. Three popular semantic approaches are corpus- based, knowledge-based, and deep learning are used to evaluate against the conventional methods …

Applicability Of Emotion To Intelligent Systems, Dionéia Motta Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani
Applicability Of Emotion To Intelligent Systems, Dionéia Motta Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani
Information Sciences Letters
We propose to investigate the connection between emotions and cognition in intelligent systems through the dynamic concept of language, which links context to logic in both human and machine language. For this, our approach is inspired on aspects of the information theory of Abraham Moles. We analyze emotions under the semantic dimension, linked to a subjective context, which gives rise or not to decisions. We demonstrate that intelligent systems can, on the one hand, work with previously categorized emotions (say in a frozen context); or, on the other hand, process information under a dynamic aspect. This is possible when considering …

Integration Of Computer Vision And Natural Language Processing In Multimedia Robotics Application, Amir El-Komy, Osama R. Shahin, Rasha M. Abd El-Aziz, Ahmed I. Taloba
Information Sciences Letters
Computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) are two active machine learning research areas. However, the integration of these two areas gives rise to a new interdisciplinary field, which is currently attracting more attention of researchers. Research has been carried out to extract the text associated with an image or a video that can assist in making computer vision effective. Moreover, researchers focus on utilizing NLP to extract the meaning of words through the use of computer vision. This concept is widely used in robotics. Although robots should observe the surroundings from different ways of interactions, natural gestures and spoken …

This study aims to explore the assessment process that labels the language abilities of students even before they begin their first year of undergraduate education at the University. The study was conducted in three ways: first, enumerating stances in the literature that demonstrate how institutionalized labels as a result of the assessment can lead to conflicting identities in students, especially in higher education; secondly, presenting qualitative data on assessment practices and their relationship in instilling a contradictory, deficit writer identity in students. Thirdly, arguing that assessment which labels students affect learner motivation and writer confidence of students ultimately creating negativity …

Whose Voice Matters? Chronotopic Position(Ing)S And The Dialogic Inclusion Of Marginalized Stakeholders In Critical Applied Linguistics, Lydia Catedral, Madina Djuraeva
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
In this paper, we argue that critical applied linguists must work towards the materially transformative, dialogic inclusion of marginalized voices in order to create more just social relations. We show how a spatiotemporal theorization of voice as materially situated and discursively imaginative can enable a more holistic approach to including such voices. Illustrative data come from the experiences of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong and includes their discourses, those of their employers, and those of domestic worker-led grassroots organizations. We use these data to demonstrate how different stakeholders have unequal abilities to materialize the spatiotemporal imaginaries they voice out, …
