Approvals And Prices Of Systemic Antibiotics In Saudi Arabia And The United States, Saad Alharthi
Approvals And Prices Of Systemic Antibiotics In Saudi Arabia And The United States, Saad Alharthi
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
Introduction
Antibiotics is one of the therapeutic classes with the highest level of consumption in the world. Despite the global diffusion of antibiotics, their availability and prices vary by country. This study assessed differences in the availability and prices of systemic antibiotics marketed in the United States (US) and Saudi Arabia and evaluated the factors associated with the differences in prices of systemic antibiotics marketed in both countries.
Material and Methods
We collected regulatory data from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost (NADAC) and the …
Environmental Communication: Changing The Attitude-Behavioral Gap In Science Communication Utilizing Strategic Messaging, Carrie Helgeson Nelms
Environmental Communication: Changing The Attitude-Behavioral Gap In Science Communication Utilizing Strategic Messaging, Carrie Helgeson Nelms
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
National Polls in the United States consistently find the public’s beliefs and attitudes about climate change and other environmental issues significantly diverge from those held by the science community. A communication gap between the findings on the causes and effects of environmental issues and the public’s inability to interpret or refuse to accept these findings are possible causes of this divergence. This communication gap constitutes a threat to society because of inaction to environmental problems and points to needed changes in scientific messaging that better informs and motivates behavioral change. The present research employed a strategic message design to affect …
Mitochondrial Dna Diversity, Parasite And Pathogen Occurrence, And A Potential Disease Vector In Managed And Unmanaged Honey Bee, Apis Mellifera L. Populations, Dylan Cleary
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The western honey bee, Apis mellifera L., is a globally important pollinator plagued by several harmful stressors impacting colony health and survival. At least eight A. mellifera subspecies were imported and continue to be the genetic ancestors of U.S. honey bee populations today. Successive genetic bottle-neck events have led to reduced genetic diversity in U.S. honey bees. First, the subset of subspecies imported into the U.S. represents only a third of A. mellifera subspecies. Next, the parasitic varroa mite reduced managed and feral populations. Third, ongoing breeding practices have selected for traits from a single genetic lineage and bred from …

Shortages of new therapeutics to treat coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have forced clinicians, public health officials, and health systems to grapple with difficult questions about how to fairly allocate potentially life-saving treatments when there are not enough for all patients in need. Shortages have occurred with remdesivir, tocilizumab, monoclonal antibodies, and the oralantiviral Paxlovid.
Ensuring equitable allocation is especially important in light of the disproportionate burden experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic by disadvantaged groups, including Black, Hispanic/Latino and Indigenous communities, individuals with certain disabilities, and low-income persons. However, many health systems have resorted to first-come, first-served approaches to allocation, which tend …
Does One Size Fit All? Why Our Genes Show The Need For Tailor-Made Solutions, Jack Haisman
Does One Size Fit All? Why Our Genes Show The Need For Tailor-Made Solutions, Jack Haisman
UC Law Journal
Since the human genome was first sequenced in 2003, millions of consumers and medical professionals have swarmed the field of medical genetics, seeking to peer into the crystal ball and see what their own, or their patients’, futures may hold. Also rushing in are direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies like 23andMe and AncestryDNA, which can circumvent medical privacy laws by offering genetic testing without a medical provider.
Medical privacy regulations, such as the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the Genetic Information Discrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), and those promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission, do not regulate …
Prevalence And Factors Associated With Undernutrition Among Children With Congenital Heart Disease At Three Tertiary Hospitals In Nairobi, Kenya., Shamsa Yahya
Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the commonest birth defect. Children with CHD have a high burden of undernutrition and its consequences. Some of the factors that are associated with undernutrition in children with CHD include the type and complexity of the heart defect, associated pulmonary hypertension, late diagnosis, timing of surgical correction, low socioeconomic status, lack of adequate nutritional support, associated genetic conditions and the presence of other clinical comorbidities. Justification: Although these factors are well defined, they vary geographically in their distribution and extent to which they influence the level of undernutrition. This limits the extrapolation of findings …

Investigating Granulopoiesis Of Neutrophils From Myeloblasts In The Bone Marrow Post Novel Anti-Schistosoma Compound Treatment, Sarah Alsuleiman, Paul Davis
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Schistosomiasis, a commonly neglected tropical disease, is a waterborne parasitic worm infection able to infect through direct skin penetration. This disease affects approximately 270 million people worldwide and ranks only second to malaria as a leading infectious disease. Although some possible alternatives are emerging, currently, the most effective drug treatment is praziquantel (PZQ). However, PZQ is only effective against the adult stage of the worm, allowing juvenile worms to progress in the infection. Additionally, Schistosoma worms are developing resistance to this drug as reduced efficacy has been noted. Thus, the need for drug discovery and testing is increased. SA01, a …
Barriers To Blood Availability Within The New Orleans Area, Tishawn Francis
Barriers To Blood Availability Within The New Orleans Area, Tishawn Francis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An adequate and reliable supply of blood and blood components is becoming an increasing public health concern. Over the past decade, researchers have indicated a continued decline in the collection of blood products. An insufficient blood supply may present a risk to both patients and reserves for emergencies and disasters. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to determine whether gender, age group, ethnicity, year, serological tests, and discard factors were associated with the availability of the donated blood supply throughout the New Orleans region. The donated blood supply chain model guided this study. Secondary data were retrieved from …
Induction Of Trained Immunity By Particulate Β-Glucan Controls Cancer Metastasis Through The Sphingolipids-Mediated Mitochondrial Fission Pathway., Rejeena Shrestha
Induction Of Trained Immunity By Particulate Β-Glucan Controls Cancer Metastasis Through The Sphingolipids-Mediated Mitochondrial Fission Pathway., Rejeena Shrestha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths and innate immune cells are critical players in the metastatic microenvironment. Here, we explore the implications of harnessing the pre-metastatic niche myeloid cells through induction of trained immunity using a natural compound yeast-derived whole β-glucan particle (WGP). WGP training in macrophages results in an increased responsiveness to not only the conventional secondary stimulus LPS but also specifically to tumor cells and tumor-derived factors. WGP in vivo treatment leads to a trained immunity phenotype in lung interstitial macrophages (IMs). Induction of trained immunity by WGP inhibits tumor metastasis and enhances tumor-free survival in …
A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
A New Sir Model With Mobility., Ciana Applegate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, a mobility-based SIR model is built to understand the spread of the pandemic. A traditional SIR model used in epidemiology describes the transition of particles among states, such as susceptible, infected, and recovered states. However, the traditional model has no movement of particles. There are many variations of SIR models when it comes to the factor of mobility, the majority of studies use mobility intensity or population density as a measure of mobility. In this paper, a new dynamical SIR model, including the spatial motion of three-type particles, is constructed and the long-time behavior of the first …

Laboratory-Reported Normal Value Ranges Should Not Be Used To Diagnose Periprosthetic Joint Infection., Salvador A. Forte, Joseph A. D'Alonzo, Zachary Wells, Brett Levine, Stephen Sizer, Carl Deirmengian
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
INTRODUCTION: Clinical laboratories offer several multipurpose tests, such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), which are not intended to diagnose any specific disease but are used by clinicians in multiple fields. The results and laboratory interpretation (normal/abnormal) of these multipurpose tests are based on laboratory-reported normal thresholds, which vary across clinical laboratories. In 2018, the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection (2018 ICM) provided a gold-standard definition to diagnose periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) which included many multipurpose laboratory tests, along with thresholds optimized to diagnose PJI. The discrepancy between laboratory-reported normal thresholds and 2018 ICM-recommended PJI-optimized …

Internal Medicine Articles
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is caused by the deficiency of ADAMTS13, a von Willebrand factor cleaving protease, which results in thrombotic microangiopathy. It is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and microvascular thrombosis leading to organ damage. It has an extremely high mortality rate if left untreated, making early diagnosis and treatment of the utmost importance. We report a case of TTP that developed after vaccination with Ad26.COV2.S COVID vaccine. We present a case of a 50-year-old African American female who presented with dyspnea one week after receiving the first dose of Ad26.COV2.S vaccine. Initial labs showed anemia, thrombocytopenia, and …

Prolonged exposure to violence may result in habituation or desensitization, which has negative impacts. Desensitization to real-life violence is a reduced initial arousal response to real-life violence. Real-life violence includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, peer violence, and community violence. Children who have been exposed to violence-related adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are more likely to achieve violence desensitization, by definition. As a result of ACEs, children are at risk of mental health complications, health-related problems, and risk for maladaptive behavior. Children who have reached violence desensitization are more likely to exhibit externalized symptoms such as aggression …

A Nonrestrictive Approach To Fluoroquinolone Stewardship At Two Community Hospitals, William R. Truong, Philip A. Robinson, Richard C. Beuttler, Jason Yamaki
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Fluoroquinolones are one of the most prescribed antimicrobials in the United States and have been increasingly used in inpatient and outpatient settings to treat various infectious diseases syndromes. Due to the unwanted collateral effects on antibiotic resistance, poor susceptibility rates among Gram-negative pathogens, and adverse effects, fluoroquinolones are often targeted by hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs to prevent overutilization. This study describes the association of nonrestrictive antimicrobial stewardship interventions at 2 nonacademic community hospitals on levofloxacin utilization, prescribing patterns on alternative antibiotics, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa nonsusceptibility rates to levofloxacin.
Methods
Nonrestrictive antimicrobial stewardship interventions included monitoring and reporting of fluoroquinolone …

Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales, Sumalee Kondo
Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales, Sumalee Kondo
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Extended-spectrum β-lactamases-producing Enterobacterales is one of the global health concern due to rapid global spread and threatening infections. It is known as “superbugs” causing both hospital-acquired and community-acquired infections. ESBLgenes dissemination is associated with mobile genetic elements on plasmid resulting in rapid transmission. Emerging of ESBL producers can occur by horizontal gene transfer. It is suggested that screening for ESBL colonization should be carried out in the high-risk groups. Moreover, appropriate antibiotic use for treatment is imperative to prevent development of bacterial resistance against new antibiotics. Global surveillance of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Escherichia coli is currently carried out with a …

Investigations Into Avian Skeletal Adaptations And Spine Fusion Events, Tori Huey
Investigations Into Avian Skeletal Adaptations And Spine Fusion Events, Tori Huey
All Theses
Avian dinosaurs evolved skeletal adaptations resulting in numerous fused spinal structures, like the synsacrum, present in extant birds. The synsacrum is a highly fused region necessary for stiffening the spine, and it fuses the spine to the pelvic ilium. Conventional wisdom suggests that fusion occurred in ovo during embryonic development via the cartilage matrix that patterns the future vertebrae. We show that post hatch birds have intervertebral discs separating all vertebrae of the spine, leading us to re-examine this notion in chickens up to 10 weeks of age. Intervertebral discs undergo constant remodeling, then degenerate and undergo tissue clearance, followed …

Contact tracing is one of the critical tools for fighting against pandemic disease outbreaks, such as the fast-growing SARS-CoV-2 virus and its different variants. At present, automated contact tracing systems face two main challenges: (1) requiring application installation on smart devices and (2) protecting the users’ privacy. This study introduces a conceptual passive contact tracing system using indoor WiFi positioning to address these challenges and investigate the role of such a system in commercial buildings. In this regard, this study uses a simulated small-office layout in a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed system. The special use …

Infectious Diseases Articles
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an inflammatory syndrome of inappropriate and excessive immune system activation. It often occurs in the setting of viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. HLH associated with malaria is very rare, and literature on this association is limited. Significant overlap exists between these two conditions, which makes the diagnosis of HLH superimposed on malaria difficult. We present a case of a patient who recently traveled from Djibouti and was diagnosed with Plasmodium falciparum malaria. She had a transient improvement in response to antimalarial therapy followed by clinical deterioration. This prompted further investigations that revealed the diagnosis of …

Preterm births (PTB) are the leading cause of neonatal deaths, the majority of which occur in low- and middle-income countries, particularly those in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Understanding the epidemiology of prematurity is an essential step towards tackling the challenge of PTB in the sub-continent. We performed a scoping review of the burden, predictors and outcomes of PTB in SSA. We searched PubMed, Embase, and three other databases for articles published from the database inception to 10 July 2021. Studies reporting the prevalence of PTB, the associated risk factors, and/or its outcomes were eligible for inclusion in this review. Our literature …

The Media Discourses On Organ Donation And Transplantation In Spain (1954-2020) And Their Implications For Spanish Nationalism, Rebeca Herrero Sáenz
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Spain has been the global leader in organ donation and transplantation since 1992, an achievement that has become a source of national pride, in a country where national symbols are heavily contested. In this dissertation I examine the changing meanings that organ donation and transplantation have acquired in contemporary Spain, focusing specifically on their implications for different aspects of Spanish nationalism. To do so, I employ a modified version computational grounded theory, a mixed-methods approach that combines topic modeling with interpretive analysis, to identify and interpret the narratives around organ donation and transplantation circulated by the Spanish press between 1954 …
Treating Anonymous Patients : The Effectiveness, Costs, And Strategies Of Promoting The Use Of Expedited Partner Therapy, Andre Kiesel
Treating Anonymous Patients : The Effectiveness, Costs, And Strategies Of Promoting The Use Of Expedited Partner Therapy, Andre Kiesel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Despite decades of concerted efforts to prevent their spread, chlamydia andgonorrhea remain two of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections in the United States (U.S.) — exacting a high toll in terms of human health and healthcare expenditure. Though easily cured with antibiotics, both infections may lead to damaging secondary health conditions – known as sequelae – if untreated, including infertility among females. However, treating diagnosed individuals (known as “index patients”) is not enough—it is critical to also care for their recent sex partners as well, lest they reinfect the treated patient. Partner referral is the traditional approach to partner …
