The advent of dose intensified interval compressed therapy has improved event-free survival for patients with localized Ewing sarcoma (EwS) to 78% at 5 years. However, nearly a quarter of patients with localized tumors and 60-80% of patients with metastatic tumors suffer relapse and die of disease. In addition, those who survive are often left with debilitating late effects. Clinical features aside from stage have proven inadequate to meaningfully classify patients for risk-stratified therapy. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop approaches to risk stratify patients with EwS based on molecular features. Over the past decade, new technology has enabled …

Choosing Evidence Over Theory: How The Evidence For The Resurrection Undermines A Priori Arguments Against Miracles, Benjamin D. Graber
Choosing Evidence Over Theory: How The Evidence For The Resurrection Undermines A Priori Arguments Against Miracles, Benjamin D. Graber
Masters Theses
For centuries, the prevailing arguments against miracles have been based on David Hume and others’ a priori arguments. These theoretical arguments continue to be debated as they are not especially persuasive to those who are ideologically opposed. Because these arguments are theoretical in nature, they exclude the possibility of miraculous events. As such, there are two ways of arguing against a priori arguments. First, one can argue from an opposing theoretical viewpoint and debate the logic within the arguments. Second, one can argue for the probability of one miraculous event. If one event can be proven likely to have occurred, …

The Resilient Apostle: Paul’S Sufferings In 2 Corinthians Through The Lens Of Resilience, Marko Pavlič
The Resilient Apostle: Paul’S Sufferings In 2 Corinthians Through The Lens Of Resilience, Marko Pavlič
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
2 Corinthians is considered one of the most personal among Paul’s undisputed letters. In a reconciling tone, Paul shares with the Corinthian churches his apostolic endeavors for the sake of the Gospel, offering hints of his sufferings and resilience. This research aims to read Paul’s sufferings in 2 Corinthians through the lens of trauma studies, particularly the concept of resilience. The paper uses an interdisciplinary approach by applying trauma theory as a hermeneutic to identify the ground and source of Paul’s ability to be resilient. The internal and external resources of Paul’s resilience are embedded in his relationship with Christ …
Banarasipan As Revelation: Immanent Utopias In The Performance Of Everyday Life, Bhargav Rani
Banarasipan As Revelation: Immanent Utopias In The Performance Of Everyday Life, Bhargav Rani
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation locates itself at the intersection of performance theory, South Asian studies and philosophy of history to examine the history of an urban consciousness known as banarasipan (literally, "Banarasi-ness") as performed by the people of Banaras in northern India. Over the course of the twentieth century, banarasipan, as a distinct way of being in everyday life, has been characterized by its valorization of heroic laziness, seditious laughter, subversive obscenities, and by its egalitarian subjectivity that overrides sectarian and class differences. In the context of South Asian history, this dissertation interrogates the theoretical premises of both Marxist and postcolonial modes …
Gospels Of (Anti)Inequality: The Politics Of Biblical Interpretation In The New Poor People’S Campaign And Capitol Ministries, Jonathan Peter Tschudy
Gospels Of (Anti)Inequality: The Politics Of Biblical Interpretation In The New Poor People’S Campaign And Capitol Ministries, Jonathan Peter Tschudy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the role of biblical interpretation in the politics of inequality in the United States. Building on scholarship in American Political Development that identifies ideas as integral to institution building, I analyze the interplay between biblical interpretations, organizational structures, and political strategies within two contemporary religio-political groups: the New Poor People’s Campaign (NPPC) and Capitol Ministries (CM). Methodologically, I combine in-depth, interpretative readings of primary source documents with an historical institutional analysis of the secondary literature on the role of religion in American politics. I argue that the two organizations’ elite leaders – Reverends William Barber II and …

Humoring The Third Republic: Le Rire In French Politics And Popular Culture, 1894–1918, Andrew C. Kotick
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies the illustrated satirical periodical Le Rire in its historical context between its debut during the Dreyfus Affair and the conclusion of World War I. Adopting a multivalent approach to the historical study of graphic humor, it argues that Le Rire constitutes a significant corpus of evidence for understanding the political, commercial, social, and cultural novelties of its time, and maintained an ambivalent relationship with the young institutions and functionaries of the French Third Republic. As France’s leading satirical periodical, Le Rire served as a powerful medium for broadcasting nascent and extreme ideas to a mass reading public …
Improving Country Conflict And Peace Modeling: Datasets, Imputations, And Hierarchical Clustering, Benjamin D. Leiby
Improving Country Conflict And Peace Modeling: Datasets, Imputations, And Hierarchical Clustering, Benjamin D. Leiby
Theses and Dissertations
Many disparate datasets exist that provide country attributes covering political, economic, and social aspects. Unfortunately, this data often does not include all countries nor is the data complete for those countries included, as measured by the dataset’s missingness. This research addresses these dataset shortfalls in predicting country instability by considering country attributes in all aspects as well as in greater thresholds of missingness. First, a structured summary of past research is presented framed by a developed casual taxonomy and functional ontology. Additionally, a novel imputation technique for very large datasets is presented to account for moderate missingness in the expanded …
Access To Power: Electricity And The Infrastructural State In Pakistan, Ijlal Naqvi
Access To Power: Electricity And The Infrastructural State In Pakistan, Ijlal Naqvi
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Pakistan would desperately like to produce enough electricity, but it usually doesn’t. This is the rare issue on which government and private sector can unite, and it is the cause of suffering for rich and poor alike across the entirety of the country. Despite prioritization by successive governments, targeted reforms shaped by international development actors, and featuring prominently in Chinese Belt and Road Investments, the Pakistani power sector still stifles economic and social life across the country. This book explores state capacity in Pakistan by following the material infrastructure of electricity across the provinces and down into cities and homes. …

The Self-Esteem Of African American Women: The Impact Of Black Church Attendance, Deborah M. Wilson, Jessica D. Davis, Carol Parker, Candy Ratliff
The Self-Esteem Of African American Women: The Impact Of Black Church Attendance, Deborah M. Wilson, Jessica D. Davis, Carol Parker, Candy Ratliff
The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of church involvement on African American women’s self-esteem. Specifically, this study was concerned with church attendance and the variable education on the total self-esteem scores of African American women. An Ex-Post Facto Research Design was used to collect and analyze the data. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study: The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) and a demographic questionnaire. The CSEI is adjudged to have excellent validity and reliability coefficients (Coopersmith, 1987). The data were tested through the application of the One-Way Analysis of Variance, the t-Test of …
Popular Memory, Silence, And Trust: A Mother And Son’S Relationship To School In The Shadow Of The Prince Edward County Closures, Rory S. Dunn
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis is an oral history related to Prince Edward County’s infamous school closures from 1959-1964. It tracks the popular memory of the closures through the narrative of two natives of Farmville, Virginia: a mother and son. This thesis investigates the role of physical monuments in the development of historical consciousness related to the school closures, as well as the intergenerational effects of the closures on the son. This thesis marks that there were radial effects from the school closures that manifested within the subsequent generation, and that for this particular case study, awareness of the closures and their effects …
Polymorphism & Parasites: Structure, Diversity And Selection Of The Mhcii Genes In A Weakly Electric Fish, Brachyhypopomus Occidentalis, Bruna L. Silva
Polymorphism & Parasites: Structure, Diversity And Selection Of The Mhcii Genes In A Weakly Electric Fish, Brachyhypopomus Occidentalis, Bruna L. Silva
Graduate Masters Theses
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules play a key role in inducing an immune response, by presenting foreign peptides to T-lymphocytes. They are considered one of the most polymorphic genes in the vertebrate genome and diversity has been associated with species diversification mediated by parasite, viral and bacterial infections. While MHC genes are well documented in teleost fish, none thus far have been described in the Gymnotiform order – a highly diverse group of neotropical electric fishes. Using a combination of a recently annotated genome and whole genome resequencing data, I identified and characterized both the classical MHCII …
Historical Study On The Development Of The Weaving Motif Of Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Nursyahri Ramadhan, Tri Karyono, Zakarias Sukarya Soeteja
Historical Study On The Development Of The Weaving Motif Of Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Nursyahri Ramadhan, Tri Karyono, Zakarias Sukarya Soeteja
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study aims to trace the early history of the Bimanese to identify the weaving and its 10 motifs defined in the Bima Land Customary Law as part of the Bima ethnic characteristics. The study used a qualitative approach with data triangulation (observations, interviews, and documentation). The research result showed that the activity of spinning yarn was known by the Bimanese before the expedition of Sang Bima to the land of the rising sun (Satonda Island, a volcanic area on Sumbawa Island), which became the ancestors of the Bimanese. They used weaving to make clothes, using similar procedures of Javanese …
Aphorism And Anti-Aphorism: Language And Aesthetics, Nicholas Romanos
Aphorism And Anti-Aphorism: Language And Aesthetics, Nicholas Romanos
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Karl Kraus, the great Viennese satirist, poet, and aphorist, is still little read in the Anglophone world. This article argues that Kraus’ innovative ideas about aesthetics and language, generated in response to the problems of modernity, are of great interest to the contemporary philosopher of aesthetics. Kraus’ writing is discussed here as a basis for a theory of the aphorism, which is shown to be a literary form uniquely concerned with its own form (and thus with literary and linguistic aesthetics). Kraus uses the aphorism to ‘serve language’ and, along with quotation, it constitutes the foundation of his style. This …
Entangled Lives In A Southern Metropolis: An Archaeology Of Legacies At 87 Church Street, Charleston, South Carolina (1734-1771), Sarah Platt
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines life at 87 Church Street in downtown Charleston, South Carolina prior to the construction of the standing Heyward-Washington House compound in 1772. The primary data for this study consisted of “legacy” collections, or previously excavated collections that for whatever reason the primary investigator is no longer present. Thus, the primary field site for this project was a museum storeroom and the archive. By revisiting these collections, significant narrative gaps emerged in terms of Black and Indigenous presence on site. As much as the research focus dwelled in the eighteenth century, the “fieldwork” drifted into examining the much …
Defending The Resurrection Of Jesus Through The Reliability Of The Credible Witnesses, Gregory K. Cherven
Defending The Resurrection Of Jesus Through The Reliability Of The Credible Witnesses, Gregory K. Cherven
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the fact that there is sufficient evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ through the reliability of the credible witnesses. Although physical evidence is lacking, it does not mean there is not sufficient evidence. Is it necessary to have physical evidence to secure a conviction? Criminal cases will be explored in which murder convictions were secured without the recovery of a dead body, physical evidence, or a confession. The convictions were secured based solely on witness testimony. The eye-witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus are evaluated through a modern lens and there …
