Nephi’S Small Plates: A Rhetorical Analysis, Noel B. Reynolds
Nephi’S Small Plates: A Rhetorical Analysis, Noel B. Reynolds
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In previous and pending publications I have proposed interpretations of various features of Nephi’s writings. In this paper I undertake a comprehensive discussion of the seven passages in which Nephi and his successor Jacob explain the difference between the large and the small plates and describe the divinely mandated profile for each. While most readers of the Book of Mormon have been satisfied with the simple distinction between the large plates in which the large plates are a comprehensive historical record of the Nephite experience and the small plates are a record of selected spiritual experiences, including revelations and prophecies, …

The Application Of Antitrust Law To Labor Markets -Then And Now, Richard A. Epstein
The Application Of Antitrust Law To Labor Markets -Then And Now, Richard A. Epstein
Articles
As of late, there has been a concerted push in the Biden administration, backed by prominent academics, to expand the application of antitrust law against major employers who are said to exercise monopsony power that reduces aggregate demand and thus leaves too many workers on the sidelines. The effort takes place chiefly in two major areas: stricter attacks on covenants not-to-compete, and more intense review of mergers under the Clayton Act.
This paper begins with an historical account of the law in both areas, from which it concludes that there is no good reason to alter the status quo ante. …

Beneficial use of dredged sediments, either in harbours or waterways, is based on their potential as alternative resources. Such sediments can be considered as bulk materials for industrial needs, which is predicated on their current waste status or meeting end-of-waste constraints. They also can be an integral part of beneficial use projects using sediments as a bulk component, including civil engineering and landscaping. This is particularly important for beneficial use projects focusing on climate change effects mitigation, such as flood protection works, coastline defence or littoral urban areas redevelopment. When dredged sediment is used as a bulk material, its acceptability …
Bringing Evidence To The “Anti-Magic” View: A Socio-Rhetorical Interpretation Of Acts 19:11-20, Joy Vaughan
Bringing Evidence To The “Anti-Magic” View: A Socio-Rhetorical Interpretation Of Acts 19:11-20, Joy Vaughan
The Asbury Journal
In Acts 19:11-20 two main events are set beside one another. The first event tells of the miracles performed by God through the hands of Paul. The second event is the story of the failed exorcism attempt by the sons of Sceva. This article argues that Luke’s purpose in the juxtaposition of the two events is to clarify for the audience the difference between magic and miracle. Key evidence for this interpretation is found in the intertextual relationship between Luke’s terminology and ancient magical literature. Additionally, the rhetorical feature of synkrisis (encomium/invective) further supports the thesis. Luke does not just …
Good Design Is Feminist Design: The Evolution Of Inclusive Graphic Design In The Work Of Sheila Levrant De Bretteville, Robyn Elizabeth Davis
Good Design Is Feminist Design: The Evolution Of Inclusive Graphic Design In The Work Of Sheila Levrant De Bretteville, Robyn Elizabeth Davis
Theses & ETDs
Sheila Levrant de Bretteville is an underrecognized graphic designer, artist, educator, and activist. The thesis statement of this paper originally focused on the impact a graphic designer can have on their audience through an exploration of her work. It has expanded to include recognition that graphic design can not only have a positive influence on its viewers, but it can be art, as well. This thesis developed through copious amounts of reading and research, often utilizing primary sources and forays into parallel topics, including the literature of the mid-century women’s movement and early feminist art history. There is not an …
Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill
Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill
Theses & ETDs
This thesis argues that Tanzania’s socialist policies in the 1960s were heavily influenced by foreign sources, in contrast to what President Nyerere tried to brand as a homegrown form of socialism that harkened back to a pre-colonial era before the nation-state of Tanzania ever existed. It examines how foreign aid affected the villagization scheme and the cultural programs President Nyerere enacted to turn Tanzania into a developed state. It also analyzes how the creation of a cultural identity for the new state of Tanzania also affected Nyerere’s choices of foreign aid. This paper also argues that by admiring the Chinese …
ثلاثون عامًا على اكتشاف كنيسة قاتيسما (قادسمو) / Thirty Years Since The Discovery Of The Kathisma: What Have We Discovered And What Have We Learned?, Rina Avner
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
About 300 m north of the Mar-Elias Monastery, near an ancient water reservoir, “Bir Kadismo” on the British survey map, three salvage excavations were conducted on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority in 1992, 1997 and 2000; another excavation was undertaken in 1999, in collaboration with the University of Athens and representatives of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Remains of a church with a unique octagonal plan were discovered, as well as buildings identified as the monastery to which the church belonged. The plan comprises three concentric octagons surrounding a rock. The inner and middle octagons were separated by …

Confessional Style Of The Ukrainian Language, Kostiantyn Kampen, Svitlana Romanchuk, Daniil Palij
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The scientific work presents the practical possibilities of stylistics in the development of the confessional variety of the Ukrainian language, covering its diachronic and synchronic planes of study. The authors raise the question of the classification of the confessional style, outline its problems, and to demonstrate the patterns of speech that highlight the characteristic features of this stylistic variety. The areas of use, the dynamics of development, the limits of influence, and the popularity of the style are considered; lexico-stylistic units are listed as an illustrative example. The temporal dimension encompassed by the style begins during paganism in the Ukrainian …
The Temporality Of Law In Traditional China And Its Contemporary Implications, Tao Wang
The Temporality Of Law In Traditional China And Its Contemporary Implications, Tao Wang
Loyola University Chicago International Law Review
Temporality of law is of great significance in traditional Chinese juridicopolitical thought, and its influence plays a crucial role in China's state building and governance. The existing temporal phrases from the West are not sufficient for explaining the symbol-oriented legal system in traditional China. Formalist law overlooks the temporal elements intrinsic to the legal system and results in the failure of governance. This Article applies a historical culture paradigm to analyze the temporality of law in traditional China by using plurality, sociality, and rhetoric as indicators to demonstrate the contestation of temporal categories in penality, socialization of seasonal time, and …
Reparations For Racial Wealth Disparities As Remedy For Social Contract Breach, Martha M. Ertman
Reparations For Racial Wealth Disparities As Remedy For Social Contract Breach, Martha M. Ertman
Faculty Scholarship
Acute crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2008 financial meltdown exposed and exacerbated chronic racial wealth disparities. Those disparities accumulated over time as government and private actions—often involving contracts—systemically benefitted White Americans and institutions at the expense of African-Americans. This essay focuses on a private law mechanism—loan contracts—as one important contributor to systemic racial wealth disparities, labels particular lending contracts and related government action as breaches of the social contract, and proposes a restitution-based form of reparations as a remedy for that breach.
Reproductive Resilience Of Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes, Krithika Venkataraman
Reproductive Resilience Of Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes, Krithika Venkataraman
Student Theses and Dissertations
Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes impose a severe global public health burden as vectors of viruses that cause dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, and parasites that cause lymphatic filariasis. Under optimal environmental conditions, Aedes aegypti females have access to human hosts that provide blood proteins required for egg development, conspecific males that provide sperm required for fertilization, and freshwater in natural or manmade containers that serves as an egg-laying substrate suitable for offspring survival during larval and pupal stages. As global temperatures rise, Aedes aegypti females are faced with climate challenges like intense droughts and intermittent bouts of precipitation, which …

Anxiety, Depression, Immunity, Quality Of Life, And Cannabis In Appalachia, Matthew Ian Frazier Ostrander
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As decriminalization of cannabis in the United States increases, understanding how cannabis use may alter physical and mental health is important. The Appalachian Mountain region is an area with poor support systems, stigma against mental health, and historic drug use problems, resulting in residents being more vulnerable to societal change. The theoretical framework for this research is psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), which is the study of the interconnections between psychology, neurology, and immunology as a holistic approach to health. Via SurveyMonkey, 160 participants completed the study, and data were based on self-reporting of cannabis use patterns in relation to anxiety, depression, immunity, …

Built Environment And Well-Being Of Stem Women Employed In The Petroleum Sector, Natalie Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Male-dominated occupations have received increased attention concerning the environmental health and retention of its specialized workforce. Research studies on the impact of the environment suggest that ecological and infrastructure conditions of the workplace affect the psychological health and physical well-being of employees across both public and private industries. Presently, in the context of the oil and gas and engineering field, there is a literature gap in exploring whether workplace conditions or adverse circumstances in male-dominated built environments negatively affect the psychological well-being and retention of women employed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations. For the current qualitative study, …

Perceptions Of Juvenile Justice Personnel On Effects Of Detention Assessments On Low-Risk Offenders, Desire' Angela Hulse-Stewart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nationally, arrest rates have declined; however, Georgia faces disproportionately high crime rates, mainly among African American juveniles in Fulton County. Juvenile recidivism has been a long-standing issue. Researchers have demonstrated that risk factors impact recidivism amongst youth offenders at 17 and 18 years of age. Researchers have not yet been able to establish how risk factors impact recidivism risks of low-risk youth offenders. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of Fulton County juvenile justice personnel on the detention assessment’s effects on low-risk youth offenders and impact on recidivism risks of African American youth. Heidegger’s …

Bagay: Articulating A New Materialism From The Philippine Tropics, Christian Jil R. Benitez
Bagay: Articulating A New Materialism From The Philippine Tropics, Christian Jil R. Benitez
Filipino Faculty Publications
Keeping in time with the new materialist turn that aspires to respond to the common disregard to matter in Euro-Western tradition of thought while at the same time insisting the imperative to decolonize such turn, this essay attempts to articulate a Philippine rendition of new materialism, through the notion of bagay, nominated here as a thing whose materiality is intuited to be appropriately determinable concerning a particular moment. This attempt is extended through turning to Bagay poetry, “a concept, a proposition” (Lumbera 2005, 136) from the 1960s toward a Philippine poetics that is most attuned to the concreteness of …

Refusing Erasure: Nugent, Fire!!, And The Legacies Of Queer Harlem, Samantha King-Shaw
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
This study examines the work of two queer Black artists, Richard Bruce Nugent and Marlon Riggs, within the historical and sociopolitical contexts of the Harlem Renaissance and cultural backlash of the late 1980s. Through comparative textual analyses, the author explores fluctuations of Black queer cultural production during the twentieth century and considers how each artist subverts dominant racist and heteronormative ideologies in mainstream society and Black communities. Engaging tools from the fields of critical race theory, queer theory, critical legal studies, and cultural representations of race and sexuality, the author analyzes “Smoke, Lilies and Jade” and Tongues Untied structurally and …

The Emotional Labor Of Special Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Erika Thomas
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This mixed methods study specifically answered the questions (1) How much and what kind of emotional labor do special educators do? and (2) What are the lived experiences of special education teachers as they relate to emotional labor, mental health, wellbeing, and retention? I used the Brotheridge and Lee Emotional Labor Scale to survey 55 special education teachers employed in public education in a mid-Atlantic County and conducted semi-structured interviews with four of the survey participants. Prior literature had found that teachers reported engaging in emotional labor with students; while true of survey respondents, through the qualitative interviews, I found …

The Russian Sphinx: Contemplating Danilevsky’S Enigmatic Magnum Opus Russia And Europe, Vlad Alalykin-Izvekov
Comparative Civilizations Review
The relations between Russia and the West have never been particularly easygoing or unambiguous, and, presently, they are yet again at an all-time low. The way to better understand, as well as to successfully communicate and cooperate with another society is through learning about evolution (and revolutions) of their (as well as one’s own) history and culture. Are there any important sources in the Russian cultural heritage that could illuminate these ages-old problems, tendencies, and trends? The year 2021 marks 150 years since publication of Nikolay Danilevsky's book Russia and Europe (1871), while the next one, the year 2022, denotes …

Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong
Colonialism And Indigenous Peoples Of Taiwan, Sabrina Wong
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
Taiwan can be found about 100 miles off the southeastern coast of China in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of a main island and many smaller surrounding islands. Before the arrival of the Dutch, the only inhabitants of the island were the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, also known as the Formosan people, Austronesian Taiwanese people, or Gaoshan people, who had been there for thousands of years. For consistency, throughout this paper, I will refer to them as Taiwanese indigenous peoples. The Taiwanese indigenous peoples are made up of different tribes, traditionally with over 26, 16 of which are recognized today by …
