Slanders And Sodomy: Studying The Past Through Colonial Crime Investigation, James G. Cusick May 2022

Slanders And Sodomy: Studying The Past Through Colonial Crime Investigation, James G. Cusick

Florida Historical Quarterly

Between 1784 and 1821, Spanish officials in St. Augustine regularly launched investigations into crime, covering cases that included slander, theft, burglary, assault, wounding, murder, and sex crimes, as well as specifically military offenses, like desertion. The records of their detective work are contained in the criminal court proceedings of the East Florida Papers, a well-preserved archive of what might be called C-CSI (or colonial crime scene investigation). In contrast to surviving records from earlier parts of the colonial period, which overwhelmingly describe highlevel crimes against Church and Crown such as heresy, piracy, and revolt, the cases in the East Florida …

James Grant, British East Florida, And The Impending Imperial Crisis, 1764-1771, Susan Schwartz May 2022

James Grant, British East Florida, And The Impending Imperial Crisis, 1764-1771, Susan Schwartz

Florida Historical Quarterly

When newly appointed governor James Grant arrived in St. Augustine on August 29, 1764, the tiny population greeted him with all the pomp and circumstance they could muster.1 A few weeks later, attended with "all due Solemnity" by the members of the Governor's Council, civil and military officials, and "many other Gentlemen of Distinction," Grant took his oaths of office.2 As Grant thanked his subjects for their deferential welcome, he was unaware that he had entered into the beginnings of a political morassan imperial crisis that would culminate in the separation of the American mainland colonies from Great Britain. In …

Time To Grow Up: The Rise And Fall Of Spring Break In Fort Lauderdale, James Schiltz May 2022

Time To Grow Up: The Rise And Fall Of Spring Break In Fort Lauderdale, James Schiltz

Florida Historical Quarterly

Every year millions of American college students embark upon their spring break odysseys south to enjoy a break from classes and inclement weather. Contrary to the degenerative nature of today's spring breaks, the genesis of the custom was rather innocent. In 1934, before the ubiquity of collegiate indoor swimming pools, Colgate University's swimming coach Sam Ingram became concerned that the harsh winters of upstate New York were inhibiting his team's strength and conditioning. At the suggestion of a swimmer's father who hailed from South Florida, Ingram and his team traveled to Fort Lauderdale to train at the Las Olas Casino …

The Historical Archaeology Of Sixteenth-Century La Florida, Kathleen A. Deagan May 2022

The Historical Archaeology Of Sixteenth-Century La Florida, Kathleen A. Deagan

Florida Historical Quarterly

Historical archaeology-also known as text-aided archaeology-is the study of the past through the integration of material remains, stratigraphic contexts, and written documents. The use of written documents provides the time frame of historical archaeological research in La Florida-that is, from the date of the arrival of Europeans (ca. 1513) and the written accounts they left. In the same way, the very notion of "La Florida"-a completely European-imposed geographical idea-also assumes a post-1513 chronology, and a spatial boundary that would have been quite alien to the indigenous peoples who lived there.

Alachua Settlers And The Second Seminole War, C. S. Monaco May 2022

Alachua Settlers And The Second Seminole War, C. S. Monaco

Florida Historical Quarterly

The role of Florida's interior settlements and relatively modest settler population has never been assigned much historical significance vis-a-vis the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). With few exceptions, the historiography has focused on the military aspects of this protracted conflict, with certain key battles, military commanders, Native American leaders, and the destruction of the east coast sugar plantations garnering the most interest.2 The ramifications of President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act (1830) which celebrated the prospect of placing "a civilized population on large tracts of country now occupied by a few savage hunters"3 are well-known, along with the treaties of Moultrie …

Affect And The Tomb In Robert Henryson's Testament Of Cresseid, Elizabeth Elliott May 2022

Affect And The Tomb In Robert Henryson's Testament Of Cresseid, Elizabeth Elliott

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The penultimate verse of Henryson’s Testament of Cresseid suggests the possibility that Troilus raised a monument in memory of his former love, Cresseid: “Sum said he maid ane tomb of merbell gray” (l. 603). Examining the political implications of this uncertain act of memorialisation, this article considers how Henryson's poem mobilises the reader's emotional response to constitute Cresseid as a mourned subject, whose subjectivity is recognised only insofar as it is limited to suffering and death. In doing so, the Testament also establishes a subjectivity for women that offers conditional tolerance predicated on respectable behaviour, contributing to the historical production …

Reception Of Classical Material In The Argument Of Charles Loyseau's Traité Des Ordres Et Simples Dignités, Matt Nelson May 2022

Reception Of Classical Material In The Argument Of Charles Loyseau's Traité Des Ordres Et Simples Dignités, Matt Nelson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Charles Loyseau (1564-1627) was a French jurist who wrote during the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIII – the first two kings of the Bourbon dynasty. Throughout his career, Loyseau wrote several argumentative treatises either contesting royal edicts or supporting royal law against popular dissent. His most influential work was his 1610 publication Traité des ordres et simples dignites. In it, he helped establish a French social structure of three distinct orders: the Clergy, the Nobility, and the so-called Third Estate consisting of the rest of the population. This system later became known as the Ancien Régime after the …

Mothers, Space, And Power In Athelston, Kirsty Bolton May 2022

Mothers, Space, And Power In Athelston, Kirsty Bolton

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The late fourteenth-century Middle English romance Athelston explores the extent and propriety of monarchic power. Integral to this exploration are the characters of two women in the text whose enactments of motherhood reveal the very human failings of the divinely elected king and contribute to the romance’s advocation of law and the church to temper monarchic power. This article focuses on the use of space in relation to power, authority, gender, and motherhood, arguing that the writer of Athelston uses the disruption of gendered spaces, particularly in relation to pregnant women, to comment on systems of power and authority in …

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian American Residential Patterns In The San Francisco Bay Area (2000–2019), Minh Q. Nguyen May 2022

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian American Residential Patterns In The San Francisco Bay Area (2000–2019), Minh Q. Nguyen

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This paper explores three methods of reporting residential patterns: (1) concentration profiles, (2) density maps, and (3) proximity profiles. I analyze U.S. Census data to map and evaluate the residential patterns for Southeast Asian Americans in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing from the field of urban planning, I report two measures of segregation and concentration (a) dissimilarity indices and (b) spatial proximity indices, and I discuss their limitations. Since mapping and spatial statistics are essential to understanding the histories, development, and advancement of Southeast Asian American communities, it is important to promote their broad usage. …

Maybe The Real Prize Was The Connections They Built Along The Way: A Legal Analysis Of The Role Of Privateering In The Creation Of The Trans-Imperial Greater Caribbean, Daniel Hall May 2022

Maybe The Real Prize Was The Connections They Built Along The Way: A Legal Analysis Of The Role Of Privateering In The Creation Of The Trans-Imperial Greater Caribbean, Daniel Hall

Honors Theses

While study of the eighteenth-century Caribbean has traditionally focused on the stark separation between the European empires of the region, this thesis seeks to reveal privateering’s role as an important force in creating what has come to be referred to as the trans-imperial or trans-national Caribbean. This will be based in an analysis of the legal structure of British privateering as a means of both drawing attention to the practice’s intrinsically legalistic nature as well as highlighting the fact that this regional creation was a result of colonists working within imperial guidelines as much as it was an act of …

Vasovagal Syncope During Venipuncture:Alleviating Symptoms Through Leg Muscle Tension And Moving Toes Sequentially, Velina Andrewski May 2022

Vasovagal Syncope During Venipuncture:Alleviating Symptoms Through Leg Muscle Tension And Moving Toes Sequentially, Velina Andrewski

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Venipuncture is a common medical procedure and is considered safe and routine. However, intermittent cases occur where patients develop symptoms of lightheadedness, nausea, weakness, and occasionally a full syncopal episode due to needle phobia, blood phobia, and pain associated with venipuncture. Vasovagal Reactions (VVR) or Vasovagal Syncope (VVS) during a venipuncture procedure can be distressing for the patient, the clinician, and disruptive to clinic routines. This paper examines whether techniques such as simple leg tensing and wiggling of toes can reduce or abort VVR/VVS completely as the patient undergoes venipuncture. Clinicians were instructed in techniques to use if the patient …

A Bayesian Group Sequential Design For Randomized Biosimilar Clinical Trials With Adaptive Information Borrowing From Historical Data, Wen Zhang, Zhiying Pan, Ying Yuan May 2022

A Bayesian Group Sequential Design For Randomized Biosimilar Clinical Trials With Adaptive Information Borrowing From Historical Data, Wen Zhang, Zhiying Pan, Ying Yuan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

At the time of developing a biosimilar, the reference product has been on market for years and thus ample data are available on its efficacy and characteristics. We develop a Bayesian adaptive design for randomized biosimilar clinical trials to leverage the rich historical data on the reference product. This design takes a group sequential approach. At each interim, we employ the elastic meta-analytic-predictive (EMAP) prior methodology to adaptively borrow information from the historical data of the reference product to make go/no-go decision based on Bayesian posterior probabilities. In addition, the randomization ratio between the test and reference arms is adaptively …

Competition And Labour Law In Canada: The Contestable Margins Of Legal Toleration, Eric Tucker May 2022

Competition And Labour Law In Canada: The Contestable Margins Of Legal Toleration, Eric Tucker

Articles & Book Chapters

In Canada, as elsewhere, the norms of capitalist legality include an aversion to permitting collective action by sellers of commodities to increase their price. Labour law, however, is built on the norm of freedom of association and the right of commodified workers to combine for the purpose of improving the terms of their labour contracts. This gives rise to a recurring regulatory dilemma. In Canada, this conflict has been resolved by granting workers a legal immunity from liability under competition law for engaging in approved collective action to improve or defend their terms and conditions of work. However, the zone …

Chilling Parental Rights, Meghan M. Boone May 2022

Chilling Parental Rights, Meghan M. Boone

Fordham Law Review

Despite this clear lack of consensus as to what constitutes ideal parenting, state actors have increasingly intervened in families when they feel that a particular parenting choice is wrong. These interventions increasingly occur through the use of criminal law and punishment.5 This criminalization extends beyond prosecutions for what would traditionally be considered abuse or neglect to a wide range of parenting choices that do not rise to this level. Although many scholars have critiqued this criminalization of parenting, the focus of these critiques has centered on the harm to the families that are actually criminalized and on how a disproportionate …

Out Of The Box: Bridging The Long-Distance Gap Between Consumer And Product In Online Experiences By Using Ar To Facilitate A Deeper Connection Through Virtual Try-Ons, Jessica E. Schell May 2022

Out Of The Box: Bridging The Long-Distance Gap Between Consumer And Product In Online Experiences By Using Ar To Facilitate A Deeper Connection Through Virtual Try-Ons, Jessica E. Schell

All Theses

As consumers are more and more preferring online experiences to brick-and-mortar shopping, there is a growing need for new and creative marketing strategies that can overcome the physical distance between consumer and product. In this paper, I demonstrate how augmented reality can bridge that gap, allowing consumers to connect with a product in a way that is not possible through traditional online media forms such as images and video. To that end, this paper includes a detailed breakdown of the conception and creation of Out of the Box, an augmented-reality application developed to enable users to virtually interact with …

The Ruinous Northern Frontier: The Decline And Collapse Of Frontier And Roman Civilizational Integrity On The Danube, A.D. 370 - 500, James Knight May 2022

The Ruinous Northern Frontier: The Decline And Collapse Of Frontier And Roman Civilizational Integrity On The Danube, A.D. 370 - 500, James Knight

Masters Theses

The imperial Roman advance to and entrenchment along the Danube from the times of Augustus to Aurelian, mirrored by the slow development of various Germanic peoples beyond the 1,700-mile river’s northern bank, set the stage for a series of climactic engagements between the late Roman Empire and their various barbarous neighbors along what had quickly become the Empire’s most important and unstable frontier. The immigration and settlement of Goths from the Pontic Steppe, fleeing the Huns as they emerged from Central Asia, within the Roman Balkans undermined the Danube frontier, eviscerated the Eastern Roman field army, and enabled Alaric’s role …

Personifications Of The Sacred And The Sovereign Represented In The Art Of The Sala Del Maggior Consiglio In Palazzo Ducale, Susan Sholar Hanny May 2022

Personifications Of The Sacred And The Sovereign Represented In The Art Of The Sala Del Maggior Consiglio In Palazzo Ducale, Susan Sholar Hanny

Theses

The aim of this research is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of why the Venetian Republic incorporated specific personifications in the art of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Chamber of the Great Council) (fig. 1) in Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) (fig. 2) created after 1577 (when a fire destroyed most of the existing artwork in the room) to promulgate the sacredness and sovereignty of the Venetian Empire. In addition, the research seeks to connect the personifications to events in Venetian history that influenced the use of specific figurative images within the artwork and to the message the Venetian Republic was …

"Neither Here Nor There" : Migrant Women And The Cycle Of Cultural Masculine Superiority, Fiorella Medina May 2022

"Neither Here Nor There" : Migrant Women And The Cycle Of Cultural Masculine Superiority, Fiorella Medina

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines the way migrant fiction evolves the use of women's stories. By examining this evolution, I argue that many migrant women writers explore misogyny within their representations of their home and adopted cultures. Using The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (1983), The Affairs of the Falcons by Melissa Rivero (2019), and The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston (1976), I explain the techniques these writers use to establish the mistreatment and marginalization their protagonists face. I clarify these works by presenting examples of women gaining agency despite the struggles they …

The Unity Of Normanitas: Norman Identity In Twelfth-Century Scotland And Southern Italy, Zachariah J. Chamberlin May 2022

The Unity Of Normanitas: Norman Identity In Twelfth-Century Scotland And Southern Italy, Zachariah J. Chamberlin

All Theses

Scholars have rigorously debated the extent to which the Normans remained a definitively identifiable group as they branched out from Normandy in endeavors of conquest and expansion. In the twentieth century, historians such as Charles Homer Haskins and David Douglas maintained the unity of Norman identity throughout the British Isles, southern Italy, and the crusader states. Other scholars like R. H. C. Davis argued that the Normans were merely extraordinary cultural assimilators and decried the notion of Norman unity, or Normanitas, as a myth propagated by chroniclers and historians dating back to the tenth century. Drawing upon recent scholarship, …

Strategies To Encourage Continued Choral Participation Among Adolescent Male Students, Joseph Michael Lewis May 2022

Strategies To Encourage Continued Choral Participation Among Adolescent Male Students, Joseph Michael Lewis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project overviewed a mixed methods research study, which examined the ways in which choral participation among adolescent male students could be encouraged by choral directors. The paper examined the history of male choral participation, common theories regarding male voice classification, as well as how choral participation among adolescent male students could be encouraged by the education of a voice change process. A vocal study of one hundred and seventeen biological male singers at Westside Middle School Academy in Danbury, Connecticut was used to study the validity of numerous male voice change theories. This study documented the transformation of the …

A Quest For Dignity: Colored Women’S Anti-Slavery Resistance In The Eighteenth Century British Jamaica And The Reconceptualization Of Human Rights, Yuwei (Ada) Liu May 2022

A Quest For Dignity: Colored Women’S Anti-Slavery Resistance In The Eighteenth Century British Jamaica And The Reconceptualization Of Human Rights, Yuwei (Ada) Liu

Of Life and History

The public conception of the Human Rights struggle was a European originated post-WWII campaign, advocated by the white organization through the top-down executing system on the non-European country. Nonetheless, by historicized Human Rights struggle, I found that the concept of rights and the ways to reclaiming them evolved under the effects of time, culture, gender, class, and race. In the eighteenth and the nineteenth century, enslaved and fugitive black women of Jamaica continually asserted their humanities in the face of institutional exploitation through the day to day resistance, black communal and family solidarity, and organized revolts. This argument builds upon …

Black Ads Matter: An Analysis Of Black Representation In Advertising., Elyssa Quinn Smith May 2022

Black Ads Matter: An Analysis Of Black Representation In Advertising., Elyssa Quinn Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the summer of 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) became a rallying cry throughout the United States and the world. At that time, many individuals and organizations reflected on how they could better support the movement for equality, equity, and inclusion, but some of the results were ingenuine, perceived as virtue signaling or woke washing. In this thesis I explore the Black representation in advertising from three prominent car brands from both pre- and post-summer 2020. I analyze ads from Acura, Buick, and Lincoln to determine if they are synergistic and include multi-dimensional Black representation, criteria Burgess et al.’s (2020) …

Women’S Influence In Cerén’S Architecture: Weaving Patterns In Classic Maya Art, Nicole Rosalia Lazo May 2022

Women’S Influence In Cerén’S Architecture: Weaving Patterns In Classic Maya Art, Nicole Rosalia Lazo

Theses

This study aims to disclose how Classic Maya commoners utilized weaving patterns in small village architecture to highlight female power and status in the highlands of Mesoamerica. There are two primary goals for this project: first, to demonstrate how the weaving patterns in Maya highlands architecture stood as a symbol for female authority; second, to add equity and diversity to the field of art history by studying the Maya with a feminist lens, which is typically an underrepresented culture and gender in comparison to other civilizations, such as those from Europe and the United States. Furthermore, the Classic Maya farming …
