The Affordable Care Act: Moral Hazard, Adverse Selection, Challenges, Alternative Proposals, And Amendments In Health Insurance Law, Paige Ross
Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)
A major issue to address with health insurance in any context, including the ACA, is that of moral hazard. Moral hazard refers to the tendency of any insured party to exercise less care to avoid an insured loss than would be exercised if the loss were not insured. It can result from the policyholders having better information about their actual care levels after coverage is purchased. Additionally, moral hazard requires that the insurer cannot perfectly monitor the policyholder’s level of care after the purchase of insurance. Moral hazard is more likely to occur if a behavior does not involve a …

How The Vegan Vs. Non-Vegan Diet Affects Strength Training Athletes, Kelsey Craig
How The Vegan Vs. Non-Vegan Diet Affects Strength Training Athletes, Kelsey Craig
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Today, there are a myriad of diets for consumers to choose from. Some people chose to follow a diet where they exclude certain foods groups, such as meat, and others choose to consume a diet with no moderation whatsoever. This literature review examines the vegan diet, and one that can be portrayed as a healthy standard diet, to analyze dietary needs of a strength training athlete. This review will not conclude which diet is better, rather, an approach for finding gaps within one’s diet, relative to their activity level.

Large-Scale Crispri And Transcriptomics Of Staphylococcus Epidermidis Identify Genetic Factors Implicated In Lifestyle Versatility., Michelle Spoto, Johanna P. Riera Puma, Elizabeth Fleming, Changhui Guan, Yvette Ondouah Nzutchi, Dean Kim, Julia Oh
Faculty Research 2022
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a ubiquitous human commensal skin bacterium that is also one of the most prevalent nosocomial pathogens. The genetic factors underlying this remarkable lifestyle plasticity are incompletely understood, mainly due to the difficulties of genetic manipulation, precluding high-throughput functional profiling of this species. To probe the versatility of S. epidermidis to survive across a diversity of environmental conditions, we developed a large-scale CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) screen complemented by transcriptional profiling (RNA sequencing) across 24 diverse conditions and piloted a droplet-based CRISPRi approach to enhance throughput and sensitivity. We identified putative essential genes, importantly revealing amino acid metabolism as …

Information Technology (IT) has radically changed our daily lives and it has the potential to help us adopt healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes. This two-part study investigates the influence of IT on health behaviors in population health management. Crises lead to severe uncertainty, high-risk perceptions, and vulnerability among people. Crisis communication through social media platforms influences people to undertake recommended behaviors that mitigate crisis consequences. Political leaders utilize Twitter to deliver crisis messages that offer mental support and empower local communities to spawn resilience and adaptability with emergent collective behaviors necessary to respond to the crisis. The primary objective …

With increased recognition of sex trafficking, calls have been made for greater identification and screening. Lack of awareness and assessment likely contribute to low identification of sex trafficking victims. The present study examined assessment practices, confidence in detecting trafficking, and experiences with DMST survivors in the caseloads of service providers in the past year. Employees at high-risk settings were recruited, resulting in a sample of 76 providers representing 21 agencies. Data revealed that while general risk factors were typically assessed, sex trafficking-specific risk factors and experiences were assessed less often. Approximately 30% of participants indicated they worked with at least …

When Free Ain’T Really Free: The Hidden Barriers Of The Free Application For Federal Student Aid, Monita H. Mungo, Monica Klonowski
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serves as an objective and neutral form required for all individuals who plan to attend college. The social barriers that the application produces and reinforces are all but objective. The application collects information and sorts students into groups based on their responses to questions regarding citizenship, race, gender, marital status, the income of parents, and convictions; and distributes or restricts financial resources based on group membership. The intersection of low socioeconomic status combined with experience in the criminal justice system, which disproportionately arrests and charges people of color (Butler, 2017; Brown, …

Introduction: Direct quantification of hemodynamic factors applied to a cerebral aneurysm (CA) remains inaccessible due to the lack of technologies to measure the flow field within an aneurysm precisely. This study aimed to develop an in vitro validated 3D in silico patient-specific internal carotid artery sidewall aneurysm (ICASA) model which can be used to investigate hemodynamic factors on the CA pathophysiology. Methods: The validated ICASA model was developed by quantifying and comparing the flow field using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Specifically, the flow field characteristics, i.e., blood flowrates, normalized velocity profiles, flow streamlines, …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
CID is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment for patients with gastrointestinal cancers, which can result in ED visits, hospital admissions and delays in cancer treatment impacting overall survival. Prior research has explored treatment-related symptoms in older cancer patients and supported the need for patient education strategies to promote symptom management. Patient education tools designed in a stoplight format include three areas with green, yellow and red zones with interventions. The tools have improved management of symptoms and reduced readmissions in chronic diseases. No research studies on oncology patients have been done utilizing a stoplight education tool.

Rewriting Kendra’S Law: A More Ethical Approach To Mental Health Treatment, James Diven
Pace Law Review
Michelle Go was pushed in front of a subway car by a man suffering from schizophrenia that had fallen through the cracks of New York’s mental health care system. Michelle’s death was imminent because the severely ill man had every right to be on the streets under present law. This note will discuss the problems with New York’s mental hygiene laws that prevent courts from mandating treatment even when treatment is in the state’s best interest.
Michelle’s death is not unique. Historically, New York has struggled to enact effective legislation governing the treatment of mentally ill individuals. As a result, …

Despite significant progress in synthetic polymer chemistry and in control over tuning the structures and morphologies of nanoparticles, studies on morphologic design of nanomaterials for the purpose of optimizing antimicrobial activity have yielded mixed results. When designing antimicrobial materials, it is important to consider two distinctly different modes and mechanisms of activity-those that involve direct interactions with bacterial cells, and those that promote the entry of nanomaterials into infected host cells to gain access to intracellular pathogens. Antibacterial activity of nanoparticles may involve direct interactions with organisms and/or release of antibacterial cargo, and these activities depend on attractive interactions and …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem facing human, animal, plant, and environmental health by threatening our ability to effectively treat bacterial infections with antimicrobials. In the United States, robust surveillance efforts exist to collect, analyze, and disseminate AMR data in human health care settings. These tools enable the development of effective infection control methods, the detection of trends, and provide the evidence needed to guide stewardship efforts to reduce the potential for emergence and further spread of AMR. However, in veterinary medicine, there are currently no known equivalent tools. This paper reviews efforts to reduce the potential for emergence …
