A Survey Of Tele-Critical Care State And Needs In 2019 And 2020 Conducted Among The Members Of The Society Of Critical Care Medicine, Donna Lee Armaignac

All Publications

Abstract: The study’s objective was to assess facilitators and barriers of Tele-Critical Care (TCC) perceived by SCCM members. By utilizing a survey distributed to SCCM members, a cross-sectional study was developed to analyze survey results from December 2019 and July 2020. SCCM members responded to the survey (n = 15,502) with a 1.9% response rate for the first distribution and a 2.54% response rate for the second survey (n = 9985). Participants (n = 286 and n = 254) were almost equally distributed between non-users, providers, users, and potential users of TCC services. The care delivery models for TCC were …

Existing studies on pregnancy-related outcomes among cancer survivors are limited by sample size or specificity of the cancer type. This study estimated the burden of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes among pregnant cancer survivors using a national database. This study was a retrospective analysis of National Inpatient Sample collected during 2010–2014. Multivariate regression models were used to calculate odds ratios for maternal and fetal outcomes. The study included a weighted sample of 64,506 pregnant cancer survivors and 18,687,217 pregnant women without cancer. Pregnant cancer survivors had significantly higher odds for death during delivery hospitalization, compared to pregnant women without cancer …

All Publications

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has continued to be a public health emergency, affecting almost 450 million people worldwide, with a disproportionate significant disease burden in the elderly community. Our objective is to provide population specific prognostic markers upon description of demographic factors, clinical characteristics, diagnostic variables, treatment characteristics and outcome variables in critically ill geriatric patients with acute hypoxic respiratory failure due to COVID-19 infection.

Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of 165 patients admitted to a single institution’s medical and cardiovascular intensive care unit between the dates of March 01, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Inclusion criteria was patients …

A Rare And Challenging Case Of Refractory Fetal Supraventricular Tachycardia, Jane Rudolph Jan 2022

A Rare And Challenging Case Of Refractory Fetal Supraventricular Tachycardia, Jane Rudolph

All Publications

Fetal supraventricular tachycardia can be difficult to manage and offers a challenging treatment course, particularly in refractory cases. The treatment course must balance maternal well-being with the health status of the fetus, all while racing against possible progression to hydrops fetalis or permanent cardiac dysfunction. We describe a case of fetal supraventricular tachycardia that demonstrates many of these concepts, as well as the importance of utilizing several treatment pathways in refractory cases.

The Myth Of Legal Realist Skepticism, Dan Priel Jan 2022

The Myth Of Legal Realist Skepticism, Dan Priel

All Papers

Here are some things everyone knows about the legal realists: They didn’t believe in legal rules, they thought—and demonstrated—that law is inherently indeterminate, and they taught us that it is the personality of the judge that decided cases. To the extent that they studied legal doctrine, it was in order to demonstrate its incoherence. This is why they “vociferously objected” to the Restatements. It is the victory of their ideas that killed the doctrinal legal treatise as a respectable form of scholarship in the United States. In addition to this jurisprudential radicalism, the legal realists were also politically radical. Their …

Background and purpose: To quantify the indication for adaptive, gated breath-hold (BH) MR-guided radiotherapy (MRgRTBH) versus BH or free-breathing (FB) CT-based image-guided radiotherapy (CTIGRT) for the ablative treatment of adrenal malignancies.

Materials and methods: Twenty adrenal patients underwent adaptive IMRT MRgRTBH to a median dose of 50 Gy/5 fractions. Each patient was replanned for VMAT CT-IGRTBH and CT-IGRTFB on a c-arm linac. Only CT-IGRTFB used an ITV, summed from GTVs of all phases of the 4DCT respiratory evaluation. All used the same 5 mm GTV/ITV to PTV expansion. Metrics evaluated included: target volume and coverage, conformality, mean ipsilateral kidney and …

Retiring Social Security’S (Non)Payment At Death After Eight Decades, Alberto B. Lopez

Emory Law Journal Online

Section 202 of the Social Security Act, which originated in the 1939 Amendments to the 1935 Social Security Act, authorizes monthly benefits payments to an eligible person until the month prior to the month of death. Under this rule, an individual who dies on November 30th at 11:59 pm is not eligible to receive a check for benefits accrued during November because the individual failed to survive one additional minute; eligibility for payment ended on October 31st. After a beneficiary’s death, the Social Security Administration (“SSA”) either prevents deposit of a check for month-of-death benefits or mandates …
