Fluid Properties Of Solvents And Oils Used In In Situ Forming Microparticles, Sai Myo Thu Rein, Torsak Intaraphairot
The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences
In situ forming microparticle (ISM) has been recently used as the injectable drug delivery system prepared from polymeric non-aqueous phase in oil emulsion. Solvents and oils used in ISM including N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), 2-pyrrolidone (PYR), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), glycofurol, triacetin, olive oil, camellia oil and isopropyl myristate (IPM) were evaluated for pH, density, viscosity, flow time, surface tension, contact angle, color distribution, injectability, antimicrobial activities and cytotoxicity. The most viscous camellia oil and olive oil showed the highest flow time with lowest color diffusion and lower injectability; thus, they were suitable for performing as external phase of ISM to prolong …

Phytoestrogen is a group compound which has an estrogen-like structure or function. One of its roles was in the bone formation. Chrysophyllum cainito L. is a plant that contains phytoestrogen. The purpose of this research is to determine the metabolite profile and activity of1ethanolpextract of C. cainitoxleaves to increase trabecular femur bone density in male mice. The metabolite profiling analysis was done using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry and analyzed using Masslynx 4.1 software. Four doses of ethanol extract of C. cainito leaves were prepared for treatment. Which are 2,14,48, and 316 mg/ body weight (BW) mice/day …

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Objectives: The pharmacological basis of anti-inflammatory agents is geared toward maintaining body homeostasis. This study investigated the scientific underpinning and mechanisms of anti-inflammatory activity of root bark of Brenania brieyi. Material and Methods: The plant material was extracted with a mixture of methanol and chloroform (2:1) and fractionated with 0.2 volume water. Egg albumin-induced edema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma models were used to investigate anti-inflammatory activity while the possible mechanisms of actions were evaluated using standard methods. Results: Significant (P < 0.05) reduction in edema and granuloma tissue formation were recorded in fractions treated groups compared with the normal control. There was a significant (P < 0.05) inhibition of membrane hemolysis and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity by the fractions compared with the standard drugs, indomethacin, and prednisolone, respectively. Both fractions significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited prostaglandin (PG) synthase and nitric oxide radical activities compared with the control. However, varying doses of both fractions did not inhibit leukocyte migration compared with rats in indomethacin and control groups. The methanol fraction was found to be more potent in most of the tests. Conclusion: These results show that B. brieyi root bark has anti-inflammatory activity, and the potential underlying mechanisms of its action are inhibition of PLA2 and PG involved in inflammatory responses.

Background: New specific and sensitive spectrofluorimetric fluorotag method has been developed and validated for the quantification of metformin hydrochloride. Materials and Methods: The derivatization reaction was carried out using 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic sulfonate as (NQS) fluorotag in the presence of strong alkaline medium (potassium hydroxide) to form the highly fluorescent product. The fluorescence was observed at emission wavelength 453 nm after excitation at 359 nm. The different experimental conditions affecting the reaction product formation and stability were carefully studied and optimized as 2% w/v of potassium hydroxide solution, 0.5% w/v NQS reagent. Results: At optimum reaction conditions, good linear relationship was found …

Department of Emergency Medicine
Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has challenged the medical community to characterize and treat a new illness. Now almost two years after the initial confirmed cases of COVID-19, medical teams are faced with another unique disease process temporally related to the pandemic-multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The comparison of these patients’ presentations illustrates the new challenges of evaluating a pediatric rash and fever in the era of MIS-C. Case Reports: This report presents three cases with features of MIS-C, positivity for SARS-CoV-2, rashes, fevers, gastrointestinal involvement, and elevated inflammatory markers. The first case poses a diagnostic …

All ETDs from UAB
Background: The most common contaminant in the oral cavity is saliva. Many studies have shown that contamination with saliva negatively affects the strength of the resin-dentin bond. A literature review by Nair et al reported that 64.6% of studies on the topic show a detrimental effect of salivary contamination on adhesive materials. No published studies were found that thoroughly studied the effects of saliva contamination on RMGIs and resin cements with regards to crown retention rates. Objective: To study the effect of salivary contamination on crown retention strengths of RMGI and resin cements at various stages of bonding and in …

A Comparison Of Growth Factor Release Between Platelet Rich Fibrin And Recombinant Human Platelet Derived Growth Factor Bb (Rhpdgf-Bb) And Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate: An In Vitro Analysis, Maggie Ann Misch
All ETDs from UAB
Patients presenting with significant alveolar bone loss can pose challenges for the clinician. Traditional bone augmentation techniques may be inadequate in achieving necessary gains to restore missing teeth with dental implants. The adjunctive use of growth factors may accelerate the healing process and enhance tissue regeneration. GEM21S is a product that includes a recombinant growth factor approved by the Federal Drug Administration for oral surgery. It is delivered as a two-component system: 1) recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) and 2) betatricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).[1] The research on GEM 21S for ridge augmentation is mostly limited to case studies.[2- 4] Biologically, …

Purpose: Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumor in adults in the US with an annual age-adjusted incidence rate of 4.67 to 5.73 per 100,000 persons. Exposure to ioniz-ing radiation is the only established risk factor for non-hereditary glioma risk. There are several sources of carcinogenic contaminants in northeast Alabama and western Georgia with the Coosa River serving as the region’s primary water source. In this study, we aimed to examine the incidence rate of glioma in northeast Alabama compared to the rest of the state as well as the association of possible environmental exposure on disease risk and …

Considerable evidence demonstrates that radiographic findings (e.g., osteophytes) are only modestly associated with the severity of knee pain, suggesting that other biopsychosocial factors likely influence symptom severity. Multiple psychological factors have been linked to worse health outcomes in people with chronic knee pain; however, it remains unclear whether psychological profiles might help explain variability in knee pain severity. Aging and age-related changes in the brain are known to parallel functional and anatomical changes in the eye, especially in certain degenerative diseases. This study explores the potential of combining ERG, specifically the Pattern Electroretinogram (PERG), which has a black and white checkerboard pattern, and OCT tests to monitor retinal ganglion cell health. We compared ERG and OCT findings from ten normal females, ages ranging from 18 to 30 years old to ascertain if ganglion cell layer volume is a reliable indicator of ganglion cell function as measured by ERG. Our results from these healthy subjects will serve as prelude …
