Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent social problem that results in a high number of deaths, psychological trauma, and physical mutilation. Previous research showed African American women as having elevated rates of intimate partner violence attributable to a lack of representation in epidemiological studies due to low socioeconomic status and cultural norms. In Central and West Africa, IPV is associated with childhood marriages, lack of education, cultural norms, and socioeconomic status. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and cultural views of both African American and African women and how they use these cultural …

Operating room (OR) managers struggle to manage day-to-day surgical operations while meeting and exceeding organizational productivity amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The deferral of surgeries contributes to millions of backlogs of surgical case volume and unintended negative consequences. Grounded in the proposition that first-case on-time starts (FCOTS) and turnover time (TOT) are correlates of OR productivity, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between FCOTS, TOT, and OR productivity. Archival data from 136 electronic surgical records were collected from two free-standing ambulatory surgery centers and analyzed using multiple regression. The results of the one-service, eye-specialized, ambulatory …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The loss of public trust in police institutions across the United States has increased and continues to grow as negative police interactions are broadcast on the news and social media outlets. Fueling the problem are police departments that are not representative of the communities they serve. Marginalized individuals are less likely to be heard by representatives of police departments, yet these individuals are needed to change negative perceptions. Hispanic females were selected for this study as part of those marginalized individuals. A generic qualitative approach was used to build this research with representative bureaucracy theory as the theoretical framework to …

However, there has been little to no interest in researching the subject of burnout, and its causes and outcomes concerning school counselors. The purpose of this quantitative study was to fill this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between school counselor burnout, specifically, the …

Impact Of Legal Representation On An Unaccompanied Child’S Immigration Case Outcome, Victoria Celia Castillo Jan 2022

Impact Of Legal Representation On An Unaccompanied Child’S Immigration Case Outcome, Victoria Celia Castillo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many of the unaccompanied children entering the United States by crossing the border from Mexico remain alone without legal protections, leaving them vulnerable to detention and deportation. The problem addressed in this study is the lack of availability and accessibility to legal representation for an unaccompanied child’s immigration proceedings. The theory of intersectionality by Kimberlé Crenshaw guided the study, as this theory is used to understand how multiple social identities, such as race and gender, intersect at the micro-level of individual experience to expose interlocking systems of privilege and oppression. For this nonexperimental quantitative study, secondary data from the Transactional …
