Relief Revival Reincarnation, Lisa Moon Jan 2022

Relief Revival Reincarnation, Lisa Moon

Theses and Dissertations

there is a complex connectivity that we have with the built environment that goes beyond visual aesthetics and stimulates each of our senses. this connectivity is tied to our identity and the way we contextualize our experiences and our world. inspired by ethnographic observations, oscar newman’s seminal work, + the pruitt-igoe documentary, the project seeks to study the elements of this connectivity or in some cases the reduced connectivity within a public housing residential environment.

what contributes to this reduced connectivity?

newman examined it from an architectural perspective, exterior elements of building, space designation, corridors, skip|stop elevators, circulation patterns, natural …

Connections Exposed | A Library For The People, Stephanie Wilburn Jan 2022

Connections Exposed | A Library For The People, Stephanie Wilburn

Theses and Dissertations

MOTIVATION

The U.S. economy, democracy, and the health and happiness of citizens depends on maintaining social capital, the networks of bonds between community members. Social capital creates the trust that facilitates action and cooperation for mutual benefit. Since the 1960s, there has been a decline in-person socialization and social bonds both within and between demographic groups in the US resulting in reduced social capital (Putnam, 2000).

One measure to combat declining social capital is to create third places where incidental and repeated social interactions build and reinforce bonds between community members (Oldenburg, 1997).

With the reduction of accessible and inclusive …

Towards New Antimalarial Drug: Depolarization Of Liposomal Membranes By Aminooxoethylcarbamothioate In The Presence Of Fe3+ Ions, Aaron Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the efforts of scientists around the world 409,000 people died of malaria in 2019 alone. According to the WHO 90% of those deaths occurred in Africa. Despite the high number of available treatments, malaria continues to plague many parts of the world. This is due in part to drug resistance developed among mosquito populations as well as limited access to medicines that do work. Furthermore, when traveling to malaria prone areas, pretreatment with a chemoprophylaxis is common practice. However, often the side effects to malaria pretreatment are severe. A new approach to the treatment of malaria is a compound …

Sociodemographic And Injury Severity Characteristics As Predictors Of Functional Independence In Older Adults With Tbi Up To 10 Years Post Injury, Carmen M. Tyler

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) incidence rates have been increasing in recent years, with the greatest number of TBIs and the highest morbidity and mortality rates in individuals aged 80 and over. As average life expectancy continues to increase, the older adult population is expected to comprise nearly one-quarter of the U.S. populace by 2060. With the increased risk to a larger proportion of the U.S. population posed by TBI, the aim of the current study was to examine the roles of sociodemographic and injury severity characteristics as predictors of functional independence trajectories across 1, 2, 5, and 10 years after …

The Economic Value Of Pharmacist-Physician Collaborative Care Models In Hypertension Management, Jessica S. Jay Jan 2022

The Economic Value Of Pharmacist-Physician Collaborative Care Models In Hypertension Management, Jessica S. Jay

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Hypertension is highly prevalent in the United States, affecting nearly half of all adults (43%). Studies have shown that pharmacy-physician collaborative care models (PPCCM) for hypertension management significantly improve blood pressure (BP) control rates and provide consistent control of BP. Time in target range (TTR) for systolic BP is a novel measure of BP control consistency that is independently associated with decreased cardiovascular (CV) risk. There is no evidence observed improvement in TTR for systolic BP with PPCCM is cost effective.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of PPCCM with usual care for the management of hypertension …

Investigating The Effects Of Psilocybin On Models Of Anxiety, Recognition Memory, And Depression-Like Behavior And The Role Of The 5-Ht2a Receptor In Mediating Psilocybin’S Impact On Behavioral Despair, Nikita Thakur

Theses and Dissertations

Psychedelics are a class of hallucinogenic substances that exert their effects through serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonism, particularly at the 5-HT2 receptor, which is further characterized into the 2A, 2B, and 2C subtypes. While some research studies indicate that psychedelics mediate their effects via 5-HT2A receptor agonism, others show that it is not necessary to induce these effects. Recently, there has been a growing interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy as a promising alternative for treatment of anxiety and depression, two of the most common psychiatric disorders worldwide associated with significant morbidity. Although antidepressants and pharmacological interventions for anxiety have revolutionized …

The Interaction Of Moral Identity And Recognition On Fundraising Behavior, Craig O. Fulton Jan 2022

The Interaction Of Moral Identity And Recognition On Fundraising Behavior, Craig O. Fulton

Theses and Dissertations

The research examined the role of moral identity in motivating prosocial behavior, specifically volunteer fundraising measured in dollars via Facebook fundraisers for the Spina Bifida Association, a national nonprofit organization. I predicted a three-way interaction of moral identity symbolization, internalization, and recognition (i.e., public acknowledgment of the gift by the organization) to predict prosocial behavior. When moral identity internalization is low, I hypothesized that high moral identity symbolization will motivate recognized prosocial behavior due to the opportunity to have one’s prosocial behavior in a public venue. In contrast, when moral identity internalization is high, prosocial behavior would be motivated regardless …

Incorporating Ontological Information In Biomedical Entity Linking Of Phrases In Clinical Text, Evan French Jan 2022

Incorporating Ontological Information In Biomedical Entity Linking Of Phrases In Clinical Text, Evan French

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical Entity Linking (BEL) is the task of mapping spans of text within biomedical documents to normalized, unique identifiers within an ontology. Translational application of BEL on clinical notes has enormous potential for augmenting discretely captured data in electronic health records, but the existing paradigm for evaluating BEL systems developed in academia is not well aligned with real-world use cases. In this work, we demonstrate a proof of concept for incorporating ontological similarity into the training and evaluation of BEL systems to begin to rectify this misalignment. This thesis has two primary components: 1) a comprehensive literature review and 2) …

Modification Of Culture Medium And Identification Of Microbial Contaminants For Improved In Vitro Propagation Of Freshwater Mussels, Raquel M. Wetzell Jan 2022

Modification Of Culture Medium And Identification Of Microbial Contaminants For Improved In Vitro Propagation Of Freshwater Mussels, Raquel M. Wetzell

Theses and Dissertations

In vitro propagation efforts play an essential role in conserving and restoring threatened freshwater mussel populations by circumventing the need for a fish host. Across a broad range of taxa, transformation is induced with an artificial M199 medium and rabbit serum. However, such formulation may not be sufficient in culturing critical species with more specific physiological requirements. In this study, multiple serum mixtures were tested to improve in vitro transformation of two freshwater mussel species: yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) and tidewater mucket (Atlantaconcha ochracea). These species were selected because they parasitize similar fish host species but …

Using Individual Determinants To Predict Behavioral Health Service Use In Integrated Pediatric Primary Care, Alfonso L. Floyd Jr. Jan 2022

Using Individual Determinants To Predict Behavioral Health Service Use In Integrated Pediatric Primary Care, Alfonso L. Floyd Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Mental health problems (e.g., attention, externalizing, internalizing) are commonly observed in youth and are often associated with significant impairment and an increased need for mental health services. Conceptual frameworks, such as Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Service Utilization, have proposed that several individual determinants (e.g., predisposing, enabling, and need factors) may influence service use for mental health problems among youth. Despite the glaring need for mental health treatment among youth with mental health problems, studies indicate that many affected youths do not receive mental health care. Integrated pediatric primary care (IPPC) settings provide an ideal setting for youth and families …

Investigating The Role Of Nlrp3 Inflammasome In Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, Urszula O. Warncke Jan 2022

Investigating The Role Of Nlrp3 Inflammasome In Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, Urszula O. Warncke

Theses and Dissertations

Paclitaxel and oxaliplatin are commonly used antineoplastic drugs that cause chemotherapy-induce peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in up to 90% of patients. The sensory symptoms of CIPN include numbness, loss of proprioception, tingling, spontaneous burning, shooting or electric shock-like pain, mechanical and thermal allodynia, and cold hypersensitivity among others. Affected patients struggle with daily activities, have a low quality of life, and might stop cancer treatment. Unfortunately, there are no effective prophylactic or therapeutic treatments for these side effects. Many studies point to the involvement of inflammation as a major contributor of CIPN pathology. We investigated the effects of genetic (NLRP3 …

Effect Of Viscoelasticity On Cellular Morphology And Activity, Thomas J. Petet Jr Jan 2022

Effect Of Viscoelasticity On Cellular Morphology And Activity, Thomas J. Petet Jr

Theses and Dissertations

It has been well established that there is a link between substrate stiffness and cellular activities such as proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Less characterized is the link between the time-dependent viscosity of a substrate with those cellular activities. To explore this, PDMS substrates were created with predictably tunable stiffness and viscosity parameters. A simulated model was also developed in parallel to explore the potential effects of viscosity in a computationally predictive way. It was found that the inclusion of viscosity caused a major paradigm shift to a non-zero substrate equilibrium that was sensitive to increases in the substrate stiffness. Finally, …

Structure-Based Drug Discovery And Development Of Protein Structure Prediction Tools Using An Empirical Force Field, Noah B. Herrington Jan 2022

Structure-Based Drug Discovery And Development Of Protein Structure Prediction Tools Using An Empirical Force Field, Noah B. Herrington

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional drug discovery has rapidly accelerated thanks to development of computational molecular modeling. The crucial component that these computational studies hinge upon is having a well-defined, and energetically favorable structure. Structures of proteins and ligands that meet these criteria are important for accurately simulating models used to study drug binding. To demonstrate the role of accurate structure simulation in the study of these events, this thesis presents, first, a story examining the problem of accurate structure modeling of ionizable residues within protein structures, specifically aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and histidine. I present our method, which uses the HINT force field …

The Examination Of Health Care System Distrust As A Barrier To Utilization And Engagement Of Preventive Services In The Health Care System In Black Emerging Adults, With A Special Focus On Insurance Status And Usual Source Of Care., Alexandra Wynn Jan 2022

The Examination Of Health Care System Distrust As A Barrier To Utilization And Engagement Of Preventive Services In The Health Care System In Black Emerging Adults, With A Special Focus On Insurance Status And Usual Source Of Care., Alexandra Wynn

Theses and Dissertations

Health care system distrust is a well-known barrier to health utilization and engagement in older African Americans. However, it has not been explored in Black emerging adults, individuals 18- 26. It is important to explore the social and psychological effects of systemic barriers, such as health care system distrust, in this developmental period as emerging adults undergo unique demographic shifts, changes in sense of self, and identity exploration. Due to emerging adulthood being an exploratory and challenging transitionary phase, emerging adults have an increased susceptibility to preventable morbidity and mortality issues and decreased access to important preventive services. Thus, health …

Manufactured Quality Of Life: Planning For Equity, Environment And Community In A Rural Mobile Home Park, Abigayle Brown Jan 2022

Manufactured Quality Of Life: Planning For Equity, Environment And Community In A Rural Mobile Home Park, Abigayle Brown

Landscape Architecture Theses

Over 20 million Americans reside in a mobile home park. The homes are hardly mobile and calling them a park is an exaggerated compliment. The automobile industry birthed the trailer that is now used as a permanent home. After the industrial revolution and World War II, reaching suburbia quickly became an American dream. Manufacturers took advantage of this movement by rapidly producing homes that have resulted in the permanent communities of today. Banks view mobile homes as personal property, which depreciates at the same rate as an automobile. Since a mobile home is not valued as real property, it makes …

Litigation Bias, Adam N. Eckart Jan 2022

Litigation Bias, Adam N. Eckart

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

There is pervasive litigation bias in law schools. Despite significant interest in transactional law fields among law students, law schools disproportionately teach to the student interested in litigation: litigation-based legal writing assignments outnumber transactional-based ones 19 to 1; litigation-based clinics outnumber transactional ones 9 to 1; and doctrinal classes focus primarily on appellate court cases, often failing to entertain substantive discussion on the creation or content of the documents that led to the dispute. As a result, law school graduates are 44% less prepared for transactional careers than litigation careers.

On The Tides: A Resort Raising Awareness Of Coral Reefs Through Environmental Intimacy And Accessible Exploration Off Hollywood, Florida's Coast, Trey Kramer

Landscape Architecture Theses

Reef ecosystems around the world are facing threats from all sides. They see destruction and physical damage from careless people participating in destructive practices such as improper fishing, dredging, or even people removing coral itself. It isn’t just from water however, urban development along coasts has changed the ecosystem in the water. Nutrients from agriculture finds its way into runoff. Urban stormwater as well as inadequately treated sewage makes its way into the oceans via our coastal cities. Overfishing can alters the delicate food chain the most reefs rely on for survival. This already fragile ecosystem is under a barrage …

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi Jan 2022

T Cell Changes Induced By Dietary/Weight Change, Aljowhara Aljeraiwi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Obesity is a condition that affects many people and is associated with numerous health issues and chronic diseases, including viral infections. For example, during the SARS-CoV2 epidemic, obesity emerged as a major risk for severe COVID 19. Obesity has been shown to increase T cell exhaustion resulting in loss of CD8+ T cell functions and reducing the immune system's capacity to fight infectious diseases. Exhausted T cells can be identified by the increased expression of the membrane protein Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD-1). While many studies demonstrate that a high-fat diet and an increase in weight can affect the immune …

Multi-Tissue Time-Domain Nmr Metabolomics For Robust And Accurate Assessment Of Dietary Effects, Hayden Johnson Jan 2022

Multi-Tissue Time-Domain Nmr Metabolomics For Robust And Accurate Assessment Of Dietary Effects, Hayden Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a quantitative, non-destructive analytical technique for identifying and quantifying metabolites. Conventional quantitative NMR analysis involves processing the recorded time-domain signal into a frequency-domain spectrum along with user-dependent processing and resonance characterization steps which may introduce bias and error. This study implements a Bayesian approach for data analysis in the time-domain to bypass these drawbacks and increase automation in metabolite quantification. The time-domain workflow is first assessed using metabolite reference standards to validate accurate resonance identification and quantification before profiling metabolites in liver, heart, and white adipose tissue of a diurnal animal model, the Nile …
