Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Dan Gifford is a gay white man who grew up in Arkansas, and eventually moved to Maine with his partner. Dan is now an employee at the Portland Museum of Art, where he enjoys his job and being close to art. Dan has always known he was gay, yet to some in Arkansas this was viewed in a negative light or simply swept under the rug. Dan explains that the first time he visited Maine he felt “home”, and enjoys that he can be his true authentic self here, without the scrutiny that he experienced in the South. Dan also …

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Mental Health Of College Aged Students, Melissa Vieth, Mindy Binder, Faythe Bauer

Nursing Masters Papers

Abstract

Problem: The overall personal wellbeing of college students was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Knowing factors to enhance wellbeing in this group is needed.

Purpose: The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore the personal well-being of college aged students during the COVID-19 pandemic and several relationships of interest. The three research questions were: is there a relationship between personal well-being and whether they participated in social activities? Is there a relationship between personal well-being and their year in college? Is there a relationship between personal well-being and their perception of coping with the pandemic?

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework: …

Discovering New Potential Inhibitors To Sars-Cov-2 Rna Dependent Rna Polymerase (Rdrp) Using High Throughput Virtual Screening And Molecular Dynamics Simulations., Dylan Brunt, Phillip M Lakernick, Chun Wu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), is an essential in the RNA replication within the life cycle of the severely acute respiratory coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing the deadly respiratory induced sickness COVID-19. Remdesivir is a prodrug that has seen some success in inhibiting this enzyme, however there is still the pressing need for effective alternatives. In this study, we present the discovery of four non-nucleoside small molecules that bind favorably to SARS-CoV-2 RdRp over the active form of the popular drug remdesivir (RTP) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by utilizing high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) against the vast ZINC compound database coupled with extensive …

Faculty Research 2022

Molecular markers scalable for clinical use are critical for the development of effective treatments and the design of clinical trials. Here, we identify proteins in sera of patients and mouse models with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) with characteristics that make them suitable as biomarkers in clinical practice and therapeutic trials. We collected serum from mouse models of CMT1A (C61 het), CMT2D (GarsC201R, GarsP278KY), CMT1X (Gjb1-null), CMT2L (Hspb8K141N) and from CMT patients with genotypes including CMT1A (PMP22d), CMT2D (GARS), CMT2N (AARS) and other rare genetic forms of CMT. The severity of neuropathy in the patients was assessed by the CMT Neuropathy Examination …

Social Determinants Of Health And Child Maltreatment Prevention: The Family Success Network Pilot, Nancy Rolock, David Crampton Nov 2022

Social Determinants Of Health And Child Maltreatment Prevention: The Family Success Network Pilot, Nancy Rolock, David Crampton

Faculty Scholarship

Child maltreatment is a highly prevalent public health concern that contributes to morbidity and mortality in childhood and short- and long-term health consequences that persist into adulthood. Past research suggests that social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status and intergenerational trauma are highly correlated with child maltreatment. With support from the U.S. Children’s Bureau, the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund is currently piloting the Family Success Network, a primary child maltreatment prevention strategy in Northeast Ohio that seeks to address these social determinants through pillars of service that include family coaching, financial assistance, financial education, parenting education, and basic life …

Effects Of Remote Learning On Mental Health And Socialisation. Literature Review, Anna Dabrowski, Pru Mitchell Nov 2022

Effects Of Remote Learning On Mental Health And Socialisation. Literature Review, Anna Dabrowski, Pru Mitchell

School and system improvement

This literature review focuses on the effects of remote learning on mental health, including acute mental health issues and possible ongoing implications for student wellbeing and socialisation. It provides an overview of some of the challenges that can impact on the mental health and relationships of young people, many of which have accelerated or become more complex during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the light of concern about rising antisocial behaviour and extremism there is a focus on socialisation and self-regulation on return to school post-pandemic. In the face of limited Australian research on these topics, the review takes a global …

Synthetic Amphiphiles As Antibiotic Potentiators, Helena Spikes Nov 2022

Synthetic Amphiphiles As Antibiotic Potentiators, Helena Spikes

Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance has become a massive threat to modern medicine. Bacteria acquire resistance either through genetic mutations or mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids. The growing resistance crisis is exacerbated by over-prescription of antibiotics and improper use. As antimicrobial resistance becomes more widespread, superbugs (bacteria resistant to more than one class of drug) have evolved. Since few new drugs reach clinical trials and even fewer are approved by the FDA, we must find a way to make existing drugs more potent. One technique to accomplish this is by using combination therapy. By administering two or more drugs at a time, …

The Monkeypox Problem, Sean Dalton

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

In the spring and summer of 2022, monkeypox spread throughout the world, and had a prominent impact on the United States. The outbreak became so prevalent that the US Department of Health and Human Services declared monkeypox to be a national emergency in August. While transmission seems to have slowed during the last few months (likely due to the distribution of vaccines) there are serious issues for the US moving forward in terms of how the government reacts to outbreaks, particularly ones that predominantly impact marginalized communities.

Epidemiological Aspects Of Equid Herpesvirus-Associated Myeloencephalopathy (Ehm) Outbreaks, Eva Klouth, Yury Zablotski, Jessica L. Petersen, Marco De Bruijin, Gittan Gröndahl, Susanne Müller, Lutz S. Goehring

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

: Equid Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is a multifactorial disease following an EHV-1 infection in Equidae. We investigated a total of 589 horses on 13 premises in Europe in search of risk factors for the development of EHM. We found that fever (p < 0.001), increasing age (p = 0.032), and female sex (p = 0.042) were risk factors for EHM in a logistic mixed model. Some breeds had a decreased risk to develop EHM compared to others (Shetland and Welsh ponies; p = 0.017; p = 0.031), and fewer EHV-1-vaccinated horses were affected by EHM compared to unvaccinated horses (p = …

Species Substitution And Mislabeling Of Ceviche, Poke, And Sushi Dishes Sold In Orange County, California, Courtney J. Kitch, Amanda M. Tabb, Grace E. Marquis, Rosalee S. Hellberg

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Raw, ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood products have become increasingly popular globally, but they are vulnerable to species substitution and mislabeling. DNA barcoding allows for fish species identification by extracting, amplifying, and sequencing a standardized gene target. A wide variety of fish products have been studied with DNA barcoding, but little investigation of ceviche and poke has occurred in the United States. Sushi is known to be a target of mislabeling but has not been extensively studied in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to investigate species substitution and mislabeling of sushi, poke, and ceviche dishes sold at restaurants …
