Context.—Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor in adults. The diagnosis and grading of different pathological subtypes of glioma is essential in treatment planning and prognosis.
Objective.—To propose a deep learning–based approach for the automated classification of glioma histopathology images. Two classification methods, the ensemble method based on 2 binary classifiers and the multiclass method using a single multiclass classifier, were implemented to classify glioma images into astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and glioblastoma, according to the 5th edition of the World Health Organization classification of central nervous system tumors, published in 2021.
Design.—We tested 2 different deep neural …

AbstractMore than two billion people worldwide have suffered thyroid disorders from either iodine deficiency or excess. By creating the national map of groundwater iodine throughout China, we reveal the spatial responses of diverse health risks to iodine in continental groundwater. Greater non-carcinogenic risks relevant to lower iodine more likely occur in the areas of higher altitude, while those associated with high groundwater iodine are concentrated in the areas suffered from transgressions enhanced by land over-use and intensive anthropogenic overexploitation. The potential roles of groundwater iodine species are also explored: iodide might be associated with subclinical hypothyroidism particularly in higher iodine …

Non-Charismatic Waterbodies And Ecosystem Disservices: Mine Pit Lakes Are Underrepresented In The Literature, Rachele Bernasconi, Mark A. Lund, Melanie L. Blanchette
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Pit lakes are one of the greatest legacies of open-cut mining. Despite the potential hazards of these lakes, they represent newly formed ecosystems with great scientific and ecological potential. Although thousands of pit lakes occur on every inhabited continent, with more being created, the microbial ecology of pit lakes is relatively under-researched. We evaluated the current state of microbial research in pit lakes by performing a Web of Science search and creating a literature database. Study lakes were categorized according to location and water quality (pH and conductivity) which is a key community and environmental concern. Research technology employed in …

Ionic Liquid: A Green Designer Solvent For Topical Delivery Of Nano System, Abulfadhel Jaber Neamah, Mowafaq M. Ghareeb, Asmaa M. Rashid
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Ionic liquids (ILs) defined as organic salts that produced from combination of organic cation with various types of organic/inorganic anions whose melting point less than 100°C. Because of their ionic character, most of ionic liquids exhibit useful properties such as no volatility, recyclability, good thermal stability, high conductivity and chemical stability. Ionic liquid cation - anion combinations permits the solvents to be prepared such as N, N-dialkylimidazolium as cation and acetate as anion. Ionic liquid was utilized as solvents or preparation components in various areas of drug delivery systems, also as novel liquid forms of APIs in various stages of …

Background: Rural population accounts for 15% of the population in the United States of America. Rural residents have a higher risk of health disparities than urban populations. The significant health inequities in the underprivileged population include a higher incidence of chronic diseases, lack of access to healthy foods, health care, health insurance, unhealthy eating habits, poor socioeconomic status, cultural and language barriers, and lack of health literacy.
Problem: The population in Fresno and Tulare County in Central Valley, California, is underprivileged, lacks access to proper health care and has higher rates of health disparities. The Save the Children organization’s Community …

With the increased enrolment the digital technologies and modern computer applications in AEC industry, a parallel increase and upgrade happened in the work competition leading to new benchmarks in such fields. The importance of these technologies increased with their investment of improving energy consumption in buildings, which represents a world crisis. The problem got worse in hot arid desert zones, as the case of some regions in KSA, where most users tend to spend most of their time in internal air-conditioned spaces, which led to the increase of the consumption of cooling energy, that reach 40% of the total Energy …

The Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus refers to the system of complex and highly non-linear interconnections between these four elements. It now represents the basic framework to assess and design policies characterized by an holistic environmental end economical perspective. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the macroeconomic models investigating its components as well as combinations of them and their interlinkages with the economic system. We focus on four different types of macroeconomic models: Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models, Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), Agent-based Models (ABMs), and Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models. On the basis …

In Sickness and in Health in South Texas: Narratives of COVID’s Impact
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a profound experience from people all around the world. Having lived through a pandemic, I can definitely say I have learned so many lessons and will always remember them. The two most important factors that impacted me during the pandemic would have to be occupational wellness and physical health.
I started working a nursing assistant job at a pediatric unit during the peak time of the pandemic. This was also the first job that I had ever worked in my life. Stepping into a medical role in the middle of the pandemic was something that …

Rejecting The Paradigm: Reimagining The Philosophy Of Punishment To Address The Criminal Justice Crisis In Twenty-First Century America, Jon E. Mcgee
Honors Theses
Legal punishment has been subject to cacophonous debate and transformation throughout the history of American political and philosophical discourse. As a growing body of academic literature indicates a failure in the punitive techniques practiced by American institutions, the necessity for a precise diagnosis of such ailments paired with a new model addressing American concerns for reform remains increasingly pertinent. With due consideration to the previous recommendations of scholars, this paper illustrates the crisis in criminal justice currently felt in the United States. Through statistical, theoretical, and comparative analyses, existing alternatives are examined and an alternative fit to serve the United …
