Evaluation Of Novel Management Options For Bacterial Spot Of Peach, Daniela Moreno
Evaluation Of Novel Management Options For Bacterial Spot Of Peach, Daniela Moreno
All Theses
Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap) is an economically important pathogen causing bacterial spot of stone fruits worldwide. In the southeastern US management for this disease relies on copper and oxytetracycline (OTC) sprays, yet disease incidence remains high especially when the environmental conditions are conducive (warm and rainy). To further complicate disease management copper tolerant and OTC resistant (OTCR) strains of Xap have been reported in the southeastern peach orchards. complicating disease management. Therefore, we aim to evaluate potential chemical and biological alternatives for disease management. The first objective was to evaluate a novel nano nanoformulation Bz (Zinc Borate) …
Triumph In The Suburbs: Richard Ford And The Spaces Of New Capitalism, John Gorton
Triumph In The Suburbs: Richard Ford And The Spaces Of New Capitalism, John Gorton
All Theses
In his 1986 book America, Baudrillard noted that “the most banal suburb…is more at the centre of the world than any of the cultural manifestations of old Europe.” My thesis argues that this monumental shift from the suburbs as enclaves at the outer edges of cultural urban centers to “the centre of the world” is at the heart of Richard Ford’s realist project in his Pulitzer Prize winning Bascombe series starting with The Sportswriter in 1986. Emergent twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature scholars have been interested in the schism between the fictionalized representation and the lived experience of suburbia — while …
Mysteerio: Multi-Regional Environmentally Extended Input-Output Model For United States, Yash Srivastava
Mysteerio: Multi-Regional Environmentally Extended Input-Output Model For United States, Yash Srivastava
All Theses
This research work titled My State Environmentally Extended Regional Input-Output (MYSTEERIO) is based on the concept of multi-regional environmentally extended input-output (MREEIO), which is a combination of lifecycle thinking and economics principles. Numerous studies have highlighted the advantages of using this methodology to determine the environmental impacts associated with economic activities for a region. However, no prior attempt has been made to conduct a state-level analysis for the US. This research work thus tries to estimate the impacts embodied due to the consumption of goods and services at the state level by using the MREEIO principles. Extensive coverage of the …
Examining The Perceptions Associated With Sunday Hunting Restrictions In South Carolina, Elizabeth Piller
Examining The Perceptions Associated With Sunday Hunting Restrictions In South Carolina, Elizabeth Piller
All Theses
Public land is an invitation for many to engage with the natural world through a variety of different activities. Sometimes these activities are mutually exclusive and can cause land use conflict, which natural resource managers must navigate. One example of this conflict is restrictions to Sunday hunting. In South Carolina, Sunday hunting is allowed on private late but banned on public Wildlife Management Area (WMA) land. This regulation remains from ‘blue laws,’ laws prohibiting certain activities on Sundays to honor the Christian Sabbath (Balestra, 2008). Blue laws are typically thought of as prohibiting alcohol, but eleven U.S. states currently have …
A Study On The Environmental And Societal Impact Of Salad Packaging, Nathanael Stephens
A Study On The Environmental And Societal Impact Of Salad Packaging, Nathanael Stephens
All Theses
Packaged salads are becoming an increasingly popular segment of today’s fresh cut vegetables and salads market. This increased demand is leading to an increased need for packaging. This increase in packaging can lead to a potential increase in impact on the environment. With a large push for sustainability in the modern economy, this environmental impact is becoming more and more unacceptable. Several studies have been conducted to determine environmental impacts of packaging, but none have homed in on the salad packaging market segment in detail until this study. This study is also pioneering the way by pairing environmental impacts of …
Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Bystander Antecedent Scale: Initial Development And Validation, Ashley Jean Friesen-Janochoski
Theses and Dissertations
The present study explored the development and initial validation of a measure of bystander intervention behaviors in situations of sexual assault. There is a gap in existing scales using a theoretical basis when measuring bystander behaviors. The scales that do exist focus primary on bystander attitudes and are not theory driven (Banyard et al., 2005; Banyard & Moynihan, 2008; Banyard, 2008; McMahon et al., 2011). Our purpose was to develop and provide initial norming and validity information for the Bystander Antecedent Scale (BAS). The BAS assesses the attitudes, social norms, and behavioral control people experience related to bystander’s behaviors when …

The Impact Of Fake-Bad And Fake-Good Responding On The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Fourth Edition (Mcmi-Iv), Michael Sasan Jowkar
Theses and Dissertations
The MCMI-IV is a personality scale that attempts to measure psychopathology as well as normal personality functioning. The MCMI-IV has a number of validity scales designed to measure over-reporting and under-reporting of psychological symptoms. No research has been done on the MCMI-IV’s ability to discriminate between respondents who are either over-reporting or under-reporting symptoms. Studies on previous versions of the test suggest elevations on the validity scale Y and elevations on personality scales 4, 5, and 7 in clients who are underreporting symptoms. Previous research also suggests elevations on the validity scale X and Z in clients who are over-reporting …
Whole Fruit Consumption, 100% Fruit Juice Consumption, And Cardiovascular Disease (Cvd) In U.S. Adults: Analysis Of 2019 Brfss, Brendan James Kesler
Whole Fruit Consumption, 100% Fruit Juice Consumption, And Cardiovascular Disease (Cvd) In U.S. Adults: Analysis Of 2019 Brfss, Brendan James Kesler
Theses and Dissertations
The consumption of whole fruit is well established to promote health and prevent disease. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans includes both whole fruit and 100% fruit juice in its intake recommendations. Compositional differences between whole fruit and 100% fruit juice may exist especially with regard to health-promoting dietary fiber. Based on potential compositional differences, a primary hypothesis was created: whole fruit consumption frequency will be lower in adults with less favorable cardiovascular measures. Additionally, a secondary hypothesis was created: 100% fruit juice consumption frequency will be higher in adults with less favorable cardiovascular measures. To explore the hypothesis, a cross-sectional, …
An Exploration Of Bisexual+ Women’S Preferences For Sexual Violence Vulnerability Reduction Interventions: A Multi-Ethnic, Multi-Racial Sample, Sara K. Kuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Bisexual women are disproportionately victimized by sexual violence due to minority stress. Understanding their acceptability of and preferences for sexual violence vulnerability reduction interventions is critical for successful prevention efforts. Self-report data was collected online from 240 ethnoracially- and gender-diverse bi+ women and 65 heterosexual, white cisgender women (controls). Bi+ women preferred bi+ inclusive interventions. The sole intervention found significantly acceptable for most bi+ women (62%) was a modified, bi+ inclusive Bringing in the Bystander®. Yet, most bi+ women ranked the Sexual Assault Risk and Alcohol Use Reduction Program and Brief Drinking Intervention as most preferred. The Hookup Reduction Intervention …
Determining Optimum Coal Bottom Ash Content For Sustainable Concrete Infrastructure, Samrawit Menda
Determining Optimum Coal Bottom Ash Content For Sustainable Concrete Infrastructure, Samrawit Menda
Theses and Dissertations
Concrete usage is increasing rapidly; subsequently, the industry's carbon footprint is increasing. Coal Bottom Ash (CBA)/Boiler Slag Bottom Ash (BS) is a byproduct of coal-burning power plants. This material can replace fine aggregate in concrete to reduce global natural material depletion. Using CBA/BS in the construction industry will reduce the technical and economic problems associated with power plants by reducing solid waste. This project's objective was to determine whether using new sustainable materials, such as CBA/BS, in concrete will reduce natural raw material usage and energy consumption. This study included three projects: comparing increased CBA/BS content to the three-control projects …
The Financial Health Of R2, Land-Grant Universities: The Relationship Of Government Appropriations And Other Major Revenue Streams On Overall Financial Health, Aaron Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
College and university administrators must be able to process large amounts of financial information quickly and be able to communicate information about financial performance to governing boards. Financial ratio analysis provides a framework for administrators to identify financial and operational concerns as well as variances from institutional plans and policies. Modern financial ratio analysis in the higher education industry relies on a set of standard ratios that comprise the Composite Financial Index (CFI). With more frequent debilitating economic events such as the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic and the predicted enrollment cliff on the horizon, college and university administrators …
To Stay Or Leave: Commitment Decisions Of Early-Career Faculty, Kevin Moberg
To Stay Or Leave: Commitment Decisions Of Early-Career Faculty, Kevin Moberg
Theses and Dissertations
While tenure-track job options have been decreasing in higher education, tenure remains one of the most influential variables in the faculty reward structure. This research project aimed to understand the experience of organizational commitment of early-career tenure-track faculty members prior to earning tenure. Particularly, the project investigated which factors such faculty members considered to be important when deciding to remain at or leave their university and how they applied their meanings of those factors in their decision making process of whether to commit to their institution of employment. The qualitative data for this project were collected through in-person interviews with …
A Comparative Qualitative Case Study About The Role Of College Debt And Personal Finances In Career Experiences Of Higher Education Professional Staff, Renee Nilsen
Theses and Dissertations
As the cost of higher education has risen, partly due to the embrace of neoliberalism in higher education, students and families have faced a growing cost-sharing burden. Along with an increased demand for graduate education credentials, this trend has led to the growth of student loan debt in the United States. This narrative case study researched how personal finance situations have impacted the career experiences of people aged 28-40 who work as professional staff in higher education. Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model guided the design and analysis to capture the dynamics between the policy realms, institutional and industry career development provisions, and …
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study On Voluntary Reporting Of Professional Groups In U.S. Commercial Aviation, James Norman
Theses and Dissertations
Aviation safety culture research does not exist regarding the specific factors that either promote or discourage voluntary safety reporting among different frontline groups in U.S. Part 121 operations. Moreover, while safety culture has been shown to vary across workgroups, cross-sectional research across multiple aviation organizations regarding voluntary reporting is lacking. To address this gap in the literature, an exploratory study was conducted utilizing a sequential, confirmatory mixed methods approach. A 28-item survey was distributed to air traffic controllers, dispatchers, maintenance technicians, and pilots. The instrument quantitatively assessed organizational safety values, reporting friction, previous reporting experience, just culture, and voluntary reporting …
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
The Effects Of The Alpha1a Adrenergic Receptor In Modulating Psychiatric Symptoms, Jason Power
Theses and Dissertations
The adrenergic system plays a key role in the treatment and understanding of the etiology of mental illnesses. Despite antidepressants having the effect of reducing the reuptake of specific neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine (NE), the mechanism of the antidepressant effect is poorly understood. It is apparent that antidepressants increase the rate of neurogenesis occurring within the hippocampal region of the brain with the hippocampus found to have an increased density around the time of symptom improvement (rate plateaus after 4-8 weeks after treatment). With an increased rate of neurogenesis taking ~1 month to occur, it was hypothesized that treatment with …

An Indepth Look On Earth-Anchoring Through Architectural Treatments To Mitigate Psychological And Psychosocial Issues During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Skye Elizabeth Schwartz
Theses and Dissertations
Astronauts' mental health is of significant concern for any spaceflight mission. For low-Earth orbit (LEO) spaceflights, crews are four to six hours away from home. They can still see planet Earth, and if there is an emergency, there are escape routes; however, when it comes to long-duration spaceflights millions of miles away from home, crews cannot see planet Earth, cannot turn around in an emergency and are on their own in a monotone and sterile environment. These desensitizing conditions directly impact astronauts’ psychological and psychosocial well-being. Crews must learn how to interact with each other for an extended period, considering …
Indigenizing The Outbreak Narrative: How Lee Maracle, Richard Van Camp, And Cherie Dimaline Critique Settler Colonialism And Medical Racism, Deanne Michelle Sparks
Indigenizing The Outbreak Narrative: How Lee Maracle, Richard Van Camp, And Cherie Dimaline Critique Settler Colonialism And Medical Racism, Deanne Michelle Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation analyzes how Lee Maracle's Ravensong, Richard Van Camp's "I Am Filled with a Trembling Heart", and Cherie Dimaline's The Marrow Thieves critique the traditional outbreak narrative structures identified by Charles Rosenberg and Priscilla Wald. Specifically, these Indigenous texts decenter the microbe for a more miasmic perspective that takes into consideration how settler colonialism and medical racism complicates the disease experience and its social epidemic.

Theses and Dissertations
RSV is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that infects our respiratory tract and can cause severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia worldwide. RSV bronchiolitis causes more fatalities in infants and newborns and leads to severe hospitalization and even death of children. The host-RSV interaction has yet to be explored properly to explain RSV bronchiolitis. This study aimed to elucidate the connection between the modulation of host actin cytoskeletal with viral pathogenesis, including bronchiolitis. As bronchial wall thickening is a common feature of bronchiolitis, the contribution of RSV-infected airway epithelium to bronchial wall thickening was evaluated. RSV infection in the healthy adult bronchial …

Guidelines For Assessment Of Cardiac Electrophysiology And Arrhythmias In Small Animals, Crystal M Ripplinger, Stacey L Rentschler, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Cardiac arrhythmias are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although recent advances in cell-based models, including human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CM), are contributing to our understanding of electrophysiology and arrhythmia mechanisms, preclinical animal studies of cardiovascular disease remain a mainstay. Over the past several decades, animal models of cardiovascular disease have advanced our understanding of pathological remodeling, arrhythmia mechanisms, and drug effects and have led to major improvements in pacing and defibrillation therapies. There exist a variety of methodological approaches for the assessment of cardiac electrophysiology and a plethora of parameters may be assessed with each approach. …

A Systematic Scoping Review Of Faropenem And Other Oral Penems: Treatment Of Enterobacterales Infections, Development Of Resistance And Cross-Resistance To Carbapenems, Sumanth Gandra, Satoshi Takahashi, Fanny S Mitrani-Gold, Aruni Mulgirigama, Diogo A Ferrinho
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is an urgent global healthcare concern. Beyond carbapenems as broad-spectrum, often 'last resort' antibiotics, oral penem antibiotics currently are approved only in Japan and India, used for the treatment of indications including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Exploring oral penem use to better understand the impact of antibiotic resistance on public health would help inform the management of infectious diseases, including UTIs.
SCOPING REVIEW METHODOLOGY: This scoping review investigated the impact of faropenem and other oral penems on Enterobacterales infection treatment and evaluated evidence for faropenem resistance and cross-resistance to carbapenems. PubMed, Embase, J-STAGE and CiNii were searched …

INTRODUCTION: Changes in brain structure and function occur with aging. However, there is substantial heterogeneity both in terms of when these changes begin, and the rate at which they progress. Understanding the mechanisms and/or behaviors underlying this heterogeneity may allow us to act to target and slow negative changes associated with aging.
METHODS: Using T1 weighted MRI images, we applied a novel algorithm to determine the physiological age of the brain (brain-predicted age) and the predicted age difference between this physiologically based estimate and chronological age (BrainPAD) to 551 sedentary adults aged 65 to 84 with self-reported cognitive complaint measured …
