Descriptive Dna Barcoding Of Argas (Persicargas) Arboreus And Argas (Persicargas) Persicus Ticks (Ixodida: Argasidae) Infesting Birds In Egypt, Enas H. Ghallab, Ayat Yousery, Mona G. Shaalan Dec 2022

Descriptive Dna Barcoding Of Argas (Persicargas) Arboreus And Argas (Persicargas) Persicus Ticks (Ixodida: Argasidae) Infesting Birds In Egypt, Enas H. Ghallab, Ayat Yousery, Mona G. Shaalan

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Argas ticks are primary parasites of birds with veterinary importance. Nevertheless, these ticks have received little attention regarding molecular identification studies. DNA barcoding is a powerful technique for identifying tick species besides traditional morphological identification. The present work is a first effort to divulge DNA sequences of Argas (Persicargas) arboreus from Egypt and worldwide. We used cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from A. arboreus infesting herons, and from the fowl tick Argas (Persicargas) persicus. Our results pointed out another success for the Folmer primers that are widely used in DNA barcoding, permitting the discrimination …

Addressing The Stigma Associated With Antiquated Blood Donation Policies And Donor Eligibility For Msm, Jay S. Pickern, Helena R. Costakis

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

The crises of blood product shortages pose real health risks and threats to the greater population in the United States (U.S.). Current U.S. blood donation policies continue to restrict or limit donations from willing and healthy individuals on the basis of sex, classified as men who have sex with men (MSM). This essay explores the historical progression of the current blood donation policy through the lens of enacted stigmatization and stigma consciousness for MSM, identifies implications of the current policy, explores the impact of the current policy and proposed changes, and calls for action to modernize the current blood donation …

Facilitating Employee Recovery From Work: The Role Of Leader‑Member‑Exchange, Judith Volmer, Eva-Maria Schulte, Charlotte Fritz

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Building on Affective Events Theory (AET), this study examined within-person relationships between employee perceptions of day-level leader-member exchange (LMX) and day-level positive affect as well as between positive affect and recovery from work in the evening (i.e., relaxation, mastery, control, and psychological detachment from work). In addition, LMX variability was examined as a moderator of these within-person relationships. Employees (N = 160) completed surveys at the end of the workday and in the evening across five consecutive workdays. Results indicate direct relationships between perceptions of LMX and employee positive affect at work. In addition, positive affect was positively associated …

Racial Disparities In Physician And Non-Physician Health Professionals: Investigating Barriers For Pre-Professional Students, Emily Remer

Honors Projects

“Diversity” is a buzzword across today’s educational, professional, and office settings. With so many looking to “diversify” their fields, it is important to note the endless ways in which people are diverse. From culture to religion to age to gender to race, and the intersectionality of them all, there has been a push to increase diversity as a means to better serve individuals in minority groups. While all forms of diversity are important, as is their intersectionality, the purpose of this project is to focus on racial disparities. There is no question that racial disparities exist across many roles we …

Further, it examined the medical comorbidities, treatment, and socio-demographic variables that impact opioid use disorder treatment retention. This study was a secondary analysis of patient health records (n=267) in an opioid treatment program clinic. The study employed a hierarchical …

Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Briese Dec 2022

Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Briese

Dissertations

Self-efficacy is defined as confidence in one's competence; the ability to successfully accomplish tasks and achieve favorable outcomes (Bandura, 1997). Many nurses today say they feel their undergraduate education was inadequate for them to feel competent to provide palliative and EOL patient care. (Chiplaskey, 2016; Scherlin & Quinn, 2016; Zheng et al., 2018).). Inadequate EOL preparation also results in nurses experiencing distress, death anxiety, burnout, feeling overwhelmed and leaving practice within just a few years (Friedman et al., 2011; Gaw, 2012; Kovner et al., 2006; Parry, 2008; Silverstein, 2017, November 28; Suzuki et al., 2008; Wilson & Kirshbaum, 2013). Needs Assessment And Mentor Program Development For Sinclair School Of Nursing, Mindy Thompson

DNP and Student Works

An estimated 1.13 million new registered nurses are needed to fill new jobs and replace retiring nurses from 2012-2022. However, the nurse faculty shortage is a primary barrier to expanding the nursing workforce over the next decade. Nurses moving from the clinical setting to the academic setting need preparation, professional growth, and the development of a social network to make the transition a lasting one. Not only do mentoring relationships improve the work environment, but there is also an indication that it improves organizational commitment by achieving a sense of accomplishment, autonomy in their role, support for professional growth, and …

UNLABELLED: Tumor suppressor mutations in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) dominate the genomic landscape, hindering the development of effective targeted therapies. Truncating and missense mutations in NOTCH1 are frequent in HNSCC, and inhibition of PI3K can selectively target NOTCH1 mutant (NOTCH1MUT) HNSCC cells. In this study, we identify several proteins that are differentially regulated in HNSCC cells after PI3K inhibition based on NOTCH1MUT status. Expression of Aurora kinase B (Aurora B), AKT, and PDK1 following PI3K inhibition was significantly lower in NOTCH1MUT cell lines than in wild-type NOTCH1 (NOTCH1WT) cells or NOTCH1MUT cells with acquired resistance to PI3K …

The Future Of Our Economy ‐ Part Ii, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The short-term measures described in Part I will not have the desired effects unless the emphasis is shifted in our school system towards Science, Technology, Engineering, Creative Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) subjects. Focus on these subjects along with content, hardware, network, software application, choices of pedagogical tools and so on all has to be entrusted to private service providers (PSP) under performance-linked contractual agreements. The setting up of computer labs, local area networks, data centres etc would require a massive jump in the allocation of budgetary resources towards education. But this would be a worthwhile use of our scarce resources …

A Time And Place For Inhibiting Autophagy, Boyi Gan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Autophagy is an attractive therapeutic target in cancer. Successful autophagy-focused clinical intervention will require a detailed understanding of when and where autophagy is important during tumorigenesis. In this issue of Cancer Research, Khayati and colleagues use state-of-the-art genetically engineered mouse models to demonstrate that transient systemic inhibition of autophagy can irreversibly impair the growth of established lung tumors with a good tolerability in normal tissues, suggesting a therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment.

Hyperphosphorylated microtubule-associated protein tau has been implicated in dementia, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders. In contrast, site-specific phosphorylation of tau at threonine 205 (T205) by the kinase p38γ was shown to disengage tau from toxic pathways, serving a neuroprotective function in Alzheimer's disease. Using a viral-mediated gene delivery approach in different mouse models of epilepsy, we show that p38γ activity-enhancing treatment reduces seizure susceptibility, restores neuronal firing patterns, reduces behavioral deficits, and ameliorates epilepsy-induced deaths. Furthermore, we show that p38γ-mediated phosphorylation of tau at T205 is essential for this protection in epilepsy, as a lack of this critical interaction reinstates …

Sitting Time And Insulin Resistance In 6,931 United States Adults: The Role Of Abdominal Adiposity, Kayla Marie Parker

Theses and Dissertations

This cross-sectional investigation of 6,931 U.S. adults examined the relationship between sitting time and insulin resistance. A primary objective was to evaluate how this relationship was mediated by the following variables: age, sex, race, year of assessment, cigarette smoking, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Self-reported sitting time, measured in minutes per day, was the exposure variable. Insulin resistance, indexed by the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), was the outcome variable. Data were used from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Results showed a strong, positive association between sitting time and insulin …

Neurons harbor high levels of single-strand DNA breaks (SSBs) that are targeted to neuronal enhancers, but the source of this endogenous damage remains unclear. Using two systems of postmitotic lineage specification-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons and transdifferentiated macrophages-we show that thymidine DNA glycosylase (TDG)-driven excision of methylcytosines oxidized with ten-eleven translocation enzymes (TET) is a source of SSBs. Although macrophage differentiation favors short-patch base excision repair to fill in single-nucleotide gaps, neurons also frequently use the long-patch subpathway. Disrupting this gap-filling process using anti-neoplastic cytosine analogs triggers a DNA damage response and neuronal cell death, which is dependent on TDG. …

UNLABELLED: Clonal hematopoiesis resulting from the enhanced fitness of mutant hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) associates with both favorable and unfavorable health outcomes related to the types of mature mutant blood cells produced, but how this lineage output is regulated is unclear. Using a mouse model of a clonal hematopoiesis-associated mutation, DNMT3AR882/+ (Dnmt3aR878H/+), we found that aging-induced TNFα signaling promoted the selective advantage of mutant HSCs and stimulated the production of mutant B lymphoid cells. The genetic loss of the TNFα receptor TNFR1 ablated the selective advantage of mutant HSCs without altering their lineage output, whereas the loss of TNFR2 resulted …
