Self-Efficacy, Knowledge, And Social Support On Self-Care Among Senior Korean Immigrants With Diabetes, Jung Eun Kim
Self-Efficacy, Knowledge, And Social Support On Self-Care Among Senior Korean Immigrants With Diabetes, Jung Eun Kim
Dissertations
Diabetes is a prevalent chronic disease that significantly affects morbidity and mortality among senior people. There are diverse ethnic populations in the United States, and Korean immigrants are one of the minority immigrant groups. Many senior Korean immigrants report language inadequacy, lack of social support, discrimination, anxiousness in an unfamiliar environment, and poor economic status. These barriers limit them from accessing adequate health care services and resources. Although self-care is the most important key part in managing diabetes, senior Korean immigrants with diabetes face challenges to perform effective self-care activities related to various barriers. However, studies about related factors on …
Development Of A 3d-Printed Microfluidic Droplet-On-Demand System For The Deterministic Encapsulation And Processing Of Biological Materials, Chandler A. Warr
Development Of A 3d-Printed Microfluidic Droplet-On-Demand System For The Deterministic Encapsulation And Processing Of Biological Materials, Chandler A. Warr
Theses and Dissertations
The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance is among the largest concerns in the world today. One method under development to combat this issue is the encapsulation of microbes in microfluidic droplets for single-cell testing. This method may be able to circumvent the need for a traditional positive cell culture which consumes the majority of the testing time using current diagnostic methods. This dissertation presents a method by which to deterministically encapsulate microbes using an artificial intelligence object detection algorithm and a Droplet-On-Demand microfluidic device. To accomplish this, the Droplet-On-Demand microfluidic device was first developed using a unique 3D-printing manufacturing method. …

Minds And Hearts And Digital Data. Collaborative Learning With Jesuit Manuscripts & Databases, Elisa Frei
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In a conversation with Emanuele Colombo, John O’Malley explained his historical method in eight points. In describing them, he noticed how “sources are mute” and how “to make them speak I must ask them questions”,[1] “the continuities are stronger and deeper than the discontinuities,”[2] and “if I really understand what is going on, I can explain it to an intelligent ten-year-old.”[3]This article aims at presenting the strategies and outcomes of a Public History project that involves on the one hand Jesuit sources of the early modern period, and on the other, non-professional historians who never studied …

John O'Malley As A Guide For Eloquentia Perfecta, Community-Engaged Work, And Graduate Education, Allen Brizee, Stephanie Hurter Brizee, Colten Biro, Meha Gupta
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
John O’Malley, S.J., was primarily a Jesuit and Catholic historian. But to scholars in writing studies, his work is illuminative due to his rhetorical analysis of church documents and his discussion of eloquentia perfecta when examining Jesuit education. More recently, in works like “’Not for Ourselves Alone,” he stresses the importance of Jesuit education focusing on the betterment of others inside and outside of the academy. During an interview conducted four months before his death, O’Malley restated the necessity of Jesuit education including writing and vita activa, that is, active civic life. In this article, we pay tribute to …
“And There The Pagans Reigned”: Epideictic, Shared Appreciation, Social History, Stephen Schloesser Sj
“And There The Pagans Reigned”: Epideictic, Shared Appreciation, Social History, Stephen Schloesser Sj
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
John W. O’Malley, S.J. highlighted the “pagan” origins of the texts recovered from classical antiquity by Renaissance humanists. Although these ancient writers had no relationship to either the Jewish or Christian religions of the Book, their writings were nevertheless valued for offering wisdom and moral insights. Thanks to the epideictic rhetorical genre, shared appreciation across boundaries was emphasized. However, O’Malley also avoided rigidity or literalism in applying principles of the past to contemporary circumstances. Ancient documents are one kind of source; the “social history” in actual practice and application of those documents is another kind of source. This essay surveys …

Essays in Education
Over the last twenty years, governments and a range of disability rights organizations have advocated for increased accessibility to educational materials and school documents for people with disabilities. Recently, several studies have shown that accessibility is still lagging among educational institutions and other government agencies. The purpose of this study was to analyze extant higher education syllabi to determine the level of compliance with the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0). The study reviewed the current accessibility requirements for schools under WCAG 2.0 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act as amended in 2018. It then provides a review …

Near Infrared Spectroscopy Is Not A Surrogate Of Venous Occlusion Plethysmography To Assess Microvascular Resting Blood Flow And Function, Manuel Gomez, Alvaro N. Gurovich, Samuel Montalvo
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 1616-1626, 2022. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique that measures tissue perfusion using red blood cells oxygen saturation and venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP) is the gold standard to assess microvascular blood flow and function. The purpose of this study was to determine if NIRS can surrogate the microvascular blood flow assessment after an ischemic challenge obtained via VOP. Twenty apparently healthy subjects (10 males and 10 females), aged 18 to 35 years, were recruited for this single session study. NIRS probes were placed 40mm apart along the epicondylar muscles on the right forearm …

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Carthage College proposed a technology demonstration that has several advantages over passive slosh control. Relative to slosh baffles, the proposed MAPMD technology has a lower total mass, a much higher degree of surface wave suppression, and less volumetric intrusion into the tank. The MAPMD concept also is optimized for cylindrical tanks (unlike elastomeric diaphragms, which work only in spherical pressure vessels), and currently requires no structural design changes to existing cylindrical propellant tanks.
The objective of the current research project under PI Kevin Crosby (Carthage College and University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio) …

Simulated Problem-Based Learning: Teaching International Law In Exciting Way, Nik Nor Suhaida Ali
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This research aimed to discuss the methods for teaching International Law to non-law students. The subject was offered to second and third-year students of the International Affairs Management program at the School of International Studies, Universiti Utara Malaysia. Since the subject required higher-order thinking skills, it was introduced with Simulated Problem-Based Learning (SPBL), which combines role-playing simulation and problem-based learning (PBL). In western universities, simulations, PBL, and role-playing were popular methods in teaching International Law and International Relations. The methods were shown to improve learning skills but were rarely used in teaching International Law in International Relations programs in Malaysia. …

The Influence Of Incorporating Modern Technologies Into The Legal Curriculum As Effective Teaching Approach In Higher Education, Tripti Bhushan
Indonesian Journal of International Law
Higher education has seen a tremendous increase in the use of technology in teaching and learning. In this context, technology would play an important part in the law school curriculum inside and outside the classroom. This would allow students to explore various aspects of the legal world beyond the classroom, and the integration provides law schools with a potent weapon. Therefore, this research focused on using technology in teaching and learning, which would significantly aid in addressing law students’ learning requirements. By examining successful technology, it uncovered the gaps between the usage and understanding of International Law. The curriculum offered …

Intimate partner violence (IPV), a type of domestic violence, is a human rights issue that is considered a global health concern. The daunting statistics outline the immense need for principles and standards for approaches to IPV. The overarching goal of this review is to explore peer support and peer mentorship as a potential adjunct service to a comprehensive service program for IPV victim-survivors. Conceptualization, theory, and frameworks; social support and peer support; the self-identity of IPV victims; single versus integrative services; service enhancement; evaluation; and advocacy and interventions are investigated in relation to IPV services, in general, and peer support, …

Handwringing Over How To Slice The Pie When Ustr Should Be Focused On Growing It, Christine Mcdaniel
Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review
The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) recently released its report on the distributional effects of trade and trade policy on U.S. workers and “underrepresented and underserved communities.” The report catalogs a host of information gathered from a literature review and several roundtables on the adverse effects of U.S. manufacturing imports. But the report’s laser focus on manufacturing imports leaves a huge gap for readers interested in the distributional effects of trade.
Manufacturing imports are an important part of trade, but they aren’t all of trade. Trade is imports and exports, goods and services, inputs and final goods. Trade is manufacturing, …

Calvin University has committed to being carbon neutral by 2057. This entails removing all the natural gas consumption for heating, converting to electrical heating options, and then making carbon free electricity. This project looked into four different options: air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, renewable natural gas, and the efficiency of current equipment. Each option was examined throughout the course of the semester to determine feasibility of each solution, and which ones would be best to implement. As a class, section A decided ground source heat pumps along with thermostatic valves and the implementation of double pane windows …

The Effects Of Raising A Child With Companion Animals, Abby Murcray
The Effects Of Raising A Child With Companion Animals, Abby Murcray
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
What were the effects on children who were raised with companion animals? As someone who has grown up with companion animals most of my life, I wanted to learn what impact the animals had on my growth and development. The research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary resources. For this study, I looked at specific studies done on children that are surrounded by companion animals versus those that are not, using mostly Utah State's Academic Search Ultimate to find my sources. Raising a child with a domestic animal benefits a child in many …
