Difficult Airway Algorithm Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, Brooke Degheb Dec 2022

Difficult Airway Algorithm Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, Brooke Degheb

Doctoral Projects

Airway management is an essential component of providing safe anesthesia. Management of the difficult airway is a valuable skill. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) may be unprepared to manage a difficult airway in the clinical setting due to limited exposure. Lack of preparation in the management of the difficult airway can result in poor patient outcomes, including brain injury and death, and poor student outcomes, including increased anxiety and decreased intubation success (Wands & Minzola, 2015). The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) nurse anesthesia faculty recognized the need for an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in difficult airway management. The …

Lateral Decubitus And Prone Positioning: An Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, David Hesley-Hernandez, James Bailey Dec 2022

Lateral Decubitus And Prone Positioning: An Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation, David Hesley-Hernandez, James Bailey

Doctoral Projects

Improper positioning of patients in the lateral decubitus or prone positions can lead to significant complications, including but not limited to: airway and invasive line loss, physiologic derangements, soft tissue injury, and peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) (Barash et al., 2017; Butterworth et al., 2018). Chui et al.’s (2018) analysis found that PNIs accounted for 12% of anesthesia malpractice since 1990, making PNIs costly. PNIs effects are not limited to cost and result in increased lengths of stay, increased pain levels, and decreased quality of life (Wojtkiewicz et al., 2015). The massive effect poor positioning can have requires that the anesthesia …

Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Intraoperative Hypotension And Hypertension Management, Andrew Mcginity, James David Ingram Dec 2022

Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Intraoperative Hypotension And Hypertension Management, Andrew Mcginity, James David Ingram

Doctoral Projects

Managing intraoperative hypotension and hypertension is a non-technical skill anesthesia providers need to maintain patient safety. Upon transitioning from didactic training to clinical training, SRNAs may find it difficult to manage a patient’s blood pressure intraoperatively. The ultimate consequence of the delayed or improper treatment of intraoperative blood pressure perturbations is end-organ damage at the patient’s expense. Unintentionally causing a patient harm will lead to an SRNA losing confidence in their abilities. This OSCE is intended to increase SRNA confidence and competence regarding intraoperative hypotension and hypertension management before entering the clinical arena.

The hypotension and hypertension management tools and …

Assessing Social Media Habits For Worsening Symptoms Of Depression, Daniel Peters

Doctoral Projects

This project was created to assist providers working in the mental health field in treating patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) by assessing for problematic social media use (PSMU), which may exacerbate symptoms of depression. A Likert scale style questionnaire, which was accessible online for clinicians, was developed and used to assess psychiatric patients between the ages of 18-35 with a diagnosis of depression using specific questions about the patient’s social media use, which research regards as having the potential to worsen depressive symptoms. This survey helped determine if PSMU may be considered as an area for assessment in patients …

Does The Use Of Mental Health Screenings And Targeted Stress Interventions Improve Mental Health Outcomes In Outpatient Clinic Staff?, Mary Benson

Doctoral Projects

The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) has been used as a classic stress assessment instrument to evaluate perceived stress across many settings. As stress is the primary phenomenon in this review due to varying stressors, including infectious diseases among healthcare workers, the PSS is the most appropriate scale for evaluating the degree to which a health worker feels stressed. In addition, the PSS is valuable as it encompasses ten items that researchers use to explore how respondents react to stress due to unpredictable events. Thus, this DNP project is based on the postulation that screening with the PSS and applying stress …

Reducing Anxiety Symptoms In African Americans Using Informal Mental Health Coping Strategies, Maleitha Nard, Kourtnei Jones-Dumas Dec 2022

Reducing Anxiety Symptoms In African Americans Using Informal Mental Health Coping Strategies, Maleitha Nard, Kourtnei Jones-Dumas

Doctoral Projects

Research shows that the adult Black community is 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems such as anxiety disorder (Anxiety and Depression Association of America [AADA], 2018). While this sobering statistic suggests the need for mental health resources in the African American community, findings indicate significant factors that depict how individuals view the mental health medical system, its health disparities, and noted inequities. Past experiences with trust and discrimination, minimal accessibility to adequate insurance, and lack of culturally aware mental health providers have all been supportive reasons for the African American community to turn to other coping mechanisms …

An Evidenced-Based Project: Decreasing Fasting Glucose Levels Within Mississippi African Americans Through Accountability Groups, Whitley Linson Dec 2022

An Evidenced-Based Project: Decreasing Fasting Glucose Levels Within Mississippi African Americans Through Accountability Groups, Whitley Linson

Doctoral Projects

African Americans have the highest population with prediabetes diagnoses (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2020). In order to effectively address the lack of assistance needed to break health disparities related to prediabetes, it is crucial to understand why those barriers exist. Experts project that more than 470 million people will have prediabetes by 2030 (Tabak et al., 2012). Educating African Americans who have been previously diagnosed with prediabetes is vital in decreasing the stigma that surrounds communities in rural Central Mississippi. By maintaining accountability groups, fasting blood glucose can decrease and participants can increase their knowledge by understanding how to …

Occupational Therapy Students’ Time-Use After Transitioning To In-Person Learning, Jhannell Hannah Ocampo, Susan Macdermott Dec 2022

Occupational Therapy Students’ Time-Use After Transitioning To In-Person Learning, Jhannell Hannah Ocampo, Susan Macdermott

Fall 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic had an emotional and physical impact on occupational therapy (OT) and occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students. Students lost access to campus services, social circles, and “safe zones," which may have consequently become traumatic stressors (U.S. Department of Education, 2021; Bridgland et al., 2021). As students transition back to campus, they struggle to navigate and adapt to in-person occupations and how they use their time. Occupational therapists understand the need for meaningful occupations and the symbiotic relationship between their well-being and health (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020). OTs have an emerging role in the post-secondary education setting, which …
