Testing Of A Novel Combined Eating-Disorder And Weight-Loss Online Guided-Self Help Intervention For Young Adults With A Binge-Type Eating Disorder And Overweight Or Obesity, Grace Elise Monterubio
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Binge-type eating disorders (EDs) and obesity-related health concerns are two serious medical issues, though study of their treatment has largely remained separate. This study implemented an online, guided self-help ED intervention that concurrently offered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based tools to improve ED symptoms, while also teaching energy-density food principles of behavioral weight loss (BWL), for individuals with clinical/sub-clinical binge-type EDs with comorbid overweight/obesity. The study aimed to examine change in weight, change in ED symptoms, and program engagement between a combined intervention (CBT + BWL) and an ED-only intervention. Participants in the combined intervention group received weekly session content pertaining …
The Bidirectional Relationship Between The Circadian Clock And Alzheimer’S Disease, Patrick Sheehan
The Bidirectional Relationship Between The Circadian Clock And Alzheimer’S Disease, Patrick Sheehan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The circadian clock and inflammation have a well-described bidirectional relationship in the peripheral immune system: the circadian clock regulates inflammatory responses, but inflammation also impacts oscillatory gene transcription controlled by the clock. The purpose of this thesis work is to understand if manipulation of the circadian clock can impact Alzheimer’s disease pathology, and if pathology itself can alter the circadian clock and its outputs. Here, I show that astrocyte-specific disruption of the circadian clock via deletion of the clock gene Bmal1 surprisingly decreased intra-neuronal protein pathologies. Further investigation found that deletion of the circadian clock resulted in a transcriptomic profile …
Behavioral, Neural, And Psychiatric Correlates Of Responses To Social Feedback, Brent Rappaport
Behavioral, Neural, And Psychiatric Correlates Of Responses To Social Feedback, Brent Rappaport
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Problems responding to peer feedback and disrupted interpersonal relationships arise in numerous psychiatric disorders; yet heterogeneity and homogeneity across disorders suggests both common and unique mechanisms of impaired social function. Identifying brain correlates of these disruptions could help explain diagnostic comorbidities as well as unique pathways, thus informing more individualized treatments. However, studies seeking to understand the link between psychological and neural mechanisms often have to rely on reverse inference assumptions to match psychological processes to brain activity. One hypothesis is that social feedback is processed similar to other forms of feedback (e.g., monetary). Thus, we aimed to test such …
Extensive Behavioral Phenotyping Of Williams Syndrome Locus Relevant Mouse Models To Assess Contributions Of Oxytocin And Gtf2ird1, Kayla Rose Nygaard
Extensive Behavioral Phenotyping Of Williams Syndrome Locus Relevant Mouse Models To Assess Contributions Of Oxytocin And Gtf2ird1, Kayla Rose Nygaard
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The Williams Syndrome Critical Region (WSCR) at chromosome 7q11.23 provides a unique opportunity to untangle the relationship between genotype and phenotype in complex behaviors, from fear and anxiety to sociability and sensorimotor processing. Copy number variations (CNVs) in this region result in two syndromes, Williams Syndrome (WS) and Duplication 7q11.23 Syndrome (Dup7), which display phenotypes that may align, indicating a common disruption of a system, or diverge, reflecting an underlying gene dosage-dependent effect. While case studies of atypical deletions resulting in WS have implicated telomeric genes Gtf2ird1 and Gtf2i in the cognitive and behavioral profiles of WS, proving causation requires …
Politics During And After Democratic Backsliding, Benjamin Rieth Schneider
Politics During And After Democratic Backsliding, Benjamin Rieth Schneider
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Why do voters support backsliding incumbents? Under what conditions are voters more permissive to backsliding? In recent years, scholars have been interested in what leads to voters to support backsliding incumbents where we should expect them to be sanctioned and generally these answers have been focused on partisanship and polarization. I build on this literature by arguing that societal threat reduces the negative evaluation of backsliding actions and highlights the need for competent leaders to protect against future crisis. I develop an original formal model that considers the different strategies available to backsliding incumbents and shows that societal threat benefits …
Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho
Characterizing Complex Affective Processing Across Age And In Relation To Social Anxiety Symptoms, M. Catalina Camacho
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Humans require a shared understanding of others’ emotions for adaptive social functioning. For instance, if someone tells a joke and another person laughs, we assume the laughing person was happy because we have a shared concept for such positive interactions. Children develop and refine these concepts as they grow up, but the underlying neural processing that supports this development is unknown. Identifying the neurodevelopment underlying emotion processing could provide important insight to emotional disorders. For example, social anxiety is associated differences in the detection and interpretation of negative or neutral emotional cues, but the underlying neurodevelopment of this behavior is …
Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs
Analyzing The Interconnectedness Of The Human Genome, Nicholas Jacobs
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The human genome is much more interconnected than many people realize. In this thesis, I will outline two efforts to portray this idea. First, I will seek to display that cell fitness is an omniphenotype. That is to say, cell fitness can be used to determine whether an unknown factor interacts with a known factor for any phenotype. The human genome is sufficiently interconnected that if two factors interact with one another then that can be reflected by a multiplicative change in cell fitness. This change in fitness can be used to determine if a new factor of interest is …
The Enemy Within: An Investigation Of The Intracellular Bacteria In Urinary Tract Infections, Jennie Elizabeth Hazen
The Enemy Within: An Investigation Of The Intracellular Bacteria In Urinary Tract Infections, Jennie Elizabeth Hazen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common diseases that are associated with significant morbidities. Multiple studies have indicated that multiple species of uropathogenesis bacteria invade and persist within bladder epithelial cells as a necessary step of uropathogenesis. Interestingly, many of these species are not canonically associated with intracellular infections. Although the first study describing bacteria within the urothelium was published two decades ago, this critical step of uropathogenesis remains relatively understudied.I established a murine model of community-acquired A. baumannii UTI, a previously unstudied manifestation of the disease. While immunocompetent mice resolved their infections quickly, immunocompromised mice displayed high bacterial burdens throughout …
Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers
Canonical And Noncanonical Mechanisms Of Resistance To Arginine Starvation In Cancer, Leonard Christopher Rogers
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) catalyzes the condensation of citrulline and aspartate into argininosuccinate as part of the urea cycle and citrulline-nitric oxide cycle. This reaction is essential for mammals to synthesize the amino acid arginine, which is required for all cells. Nearly all human tissues express at least some ASS1, but they import most of their arginine from the extracellular space after it is produced and released by the kidneys. Most solid tumors lack a functional level of ASS1, including over 85% of sarcomas, which are cancers of connective tissues. Published evidence suggests that this provides a proliferation …
Contributions Of Specific Retinal Circuits And Their Respective Projections To Visual Behaviors, Jenna Mackenzie Krizan
Contributions Of Specific Retinal Circuits And Their Respective Projections To Visual Behaviors, Jenna Mackenzie Krizan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The survival of a species is inextricably linked to its ability to successfully navigate and interact with its surroundings, whether to seek safety from predators or gain sustenance from prey. Both functions are performed by mice, guided by vision, and rely on intricate processing in the retina and subcortical targets in the brain. This dissertation addresses how specific features of the visual environment and specific retinal ganglion cell circuits that sample a particular space in the visual environment are used to guide efficient predation in mice.Recent studies have begun to link the ability to detect, track, and ultimately capture prey …

Introduction: Limbic predominant age related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathological change (LATE-NC) is a recently characterized brain disease that mimics Alzheimer’s disease (AD) clinically. To date, LATE-NC is difficult to diagnose antemortem using clinical information or biomarkers. Recent studies suggest concentrations of extracellular vesicle (EVs) protein cargo derived from neuronal and glial cells may serve as useful diagnostic biomarkers for AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Methods: TDP-43 was evaluated in neuronal (NDEVs), astrocyte (ADEVs), and microglial derived extracellular vesicles (MDEVs). EV preparations were isolated from the plasma of research subjects with autopsy-confirmed diagnoses, including many with LATE (n = 22). …
The Contemporary "White Trash" Memoir In Literary, Social And Political Contexts, Ursula Hansberry
The Contemporary "White Trash" Memoir In Literary, Social And Political Contexts, Ursula Hansberry
Student Theses and Dissertations
This senior thesis is about class in the United States, as expressed and represented in three critically and popularly successful memoirs published by white working-class writers between 2005 and 2018. My thesis explores how these memoirs and their critical and commercial reception demonstrate a profound shift in cultural and social representations of white working-class upbringings in the United States, although not in any simple or obvious way. While readers intuitively grasp that a memoir is not the truth in a directly literal sense, but rather a document that is constructed, edited, framed, shaped, and dramatized, readers and critics at the …

Data Dimensionality Reduction Techniques: What Works With Machine Learning Models, Yuting Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
High-dimensional data has a wide range of applications in research, such as education, health, social media, and many other research fields. However, the high dimensionality of data can raise many problems for data analyses. This study focuses on commonly used techniques of dimensionality reduction for machine learning models, which play an essential and inevitable role in data prepossessing and statistical analysis. The main issues of high-dimensional data for machine learning tasks include the accuracy of data classification and visualization in machine learning models. Therefore, in this study, machine learning algorithms are used to predict and classify datasets to evaluate the …

Leveraging System Context To Understand Collaborative Systems In Modern Public Management, Catherine Annis
Dissertations - ALL
Complex and boundary-spanning problems like overpopulation, hunger, pandemics, homelessness, and environmental degradation occur more frequently now than ever (Bynander & Nohrstedt, 2019; Criado & Guevara-Gómez, 2021; Huang, 2020; Kapucu, 2015; Getha-Taylor, 2007; Jayasinghe et al., 2022). Policymakers increasingly address these challenges through interorganizational collaboration (Isett et al., 2011). Countries worldwide now use collaborative governance to respond to such wicked problems (Jayasinghe et al., 2022; Huang, 2020; Megawati et al., 2020). Despite growing in popularity, gaps remain in understanding collaborative governance at scale. In this dissertation, I present research on the interconnected nature of collaborative governance initiatives in the United States …

Hypertrophy Of Tensor Fascia Lata, A Case Report In Cadaver, Amit Massand, Bhavishya Neelam, B.V. Murlimanju
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
We report a case of thickening of Tensor Fascia Lata (TFL), which was observed in a cadaver. In this case, TFL muscle fibers were crossing from the medial to lateral side with normal origin and got inserted into the upper part, just above the medial half of the Iliotibial tract as well as the Fascial Lata anteriorly. Here, we report the morphometric dimensions of the TFL muscles in this case. These hypertrophies are benign conditions, which are clinically mistaken for a tumor. We believe that reporting of this case is enlightening to the operating surgeon and anatomist. This has implications …

All around the globe, humankind faces a disastrous situation that witnessed COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 pandemic caused severe loss of human life across the world. Most of the countries had been socially and economically weakened. The health sector faced lots of challenges in diagnosing the COVID patients, vaccinating the people, identifying the people who are infected by the virus. At the earlier stage, it has been difficult to identify the symptoms in infected person that is caused by the virus. Months later, symptoms were identified and, disease detecting machines were invented. But still, time taking for the results from the …
Health Management And Adaptive Control Of Distributed Spacecraft Systems, Tatiana Alejandra Gutierrez Martinez
Health Management And Adaptive Control Of Distributed Spacecraft Systems, Tatiana Alejandra Gutierrez Martinez
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
As the development of challenging missions like on-orbit construction and collaborative inspection that involve multi-spacecraft systems increases, the requirements needed to improve post-failure safety to maintain the mission performance also increases, especially when operating under uncertain conditions. In particular, space missions that involve Distributed Spacecraft Systems (e.g, inspection, repairing, assembling, or deployment of space assets) are susceptible to failures and threats that are detrimental to the overall mission performance. This research applies a distributed Health Management System that uses a bio-inspired mechanism based on the Artificial Immune System coupled with a Support Vector Machine to obtain an optimized health monitoring …
Noise And Propulsive Efficiency Interactions For Rotors And Propellers At Constant Thrust, Riccardo Roiati
Noise And Propulsive Efficiency Interactions For Rotors And Propellers At Constant Thrust, Riccardo Roiati
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In the emerging market of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), aerospace companies have been designing and prototyping electric and hybrid vehicles to revolutionize travel. These vehicles must have low noise and particulate emissions while also having enough propulsive efficiency to complete the mission. This thesis aims to study the relationship between noise and propulsive efficiency as related to any aircraft equipped with an electric motor and a variable pitch rotor/propeller. The combination of the electric motor with the variable pitch propeller/rotor allows for a decoupled rotational speed and torque generation, meaning that the electric motor can generate the same amount of …
On-Board Artificial Intelligence For Failure Detection And Safe Trajectory Generation, Eduardo Morillo
On-Board Artificial Intelligence For Failure Detection And Safe Trajectory Generation, Eduardo Morillo
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The use of autonomous flight vehicles has recently increased due to their versatility and capability of carrying out different type of missions in a wide range of flight conditions. Adequate commanded trajectory generation and modification, as well as high-performance trajectory tracking control laws have been an essential focus of researchers given that integration into the National Air Space (NAS) is becoming a primary need. However, the operational safety of these systems can be easily affected if abnormal flight conditions are present, thereby compromising the nominal bounds of design of the system's flight envelop and trajectory following. This thesis focuses on …

Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Nanomaterials (NMs) have been increasingly used in a number of areas, including consumer products and nanomedicine. Target tissue dosimetry is important in the evaluation of safety, efficacy, and potential toxicity of NMs. Current evaluation of NM efficacy and safety involves the time-consuming collection of pharmacokinetic and toxicity data in animals and is usually completed one material at a time. This traditional approach no longer meets the demand of the explosive growth of NM-based products. There is an emerging need to develop methods that can help design safe and effective NMs in an efficient manner. In this review article, we critically …

Predictors Of Covid-19 Vaccination Rate In Usa: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed M. I. Osman, Ahmed Sabit
WCBT Faculty Publications
In this study, we examine state-level features and policies that are most important in achieving a threshold level vaccination rate to curve the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We employ CHAID, a decision tree algorithm, on three different model specifications to answer this question based on a dataset that includes all the states in the United States. Workplace travel emerges as the most important predictor; however, the governors’ political affiliation (PA) replaces it in a more conservative feature set that includes economic features and the growth rate of COVID-19 cases. We also employ several alternative algorithms as a robustness check. …

The COVID-19 pandemic has strained healthcare systems in many parts of the United States. During the early months of the pandemic, there was substantial uncertainty about whether the large number of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization would exceed healthcare system capacity. This uncertainty created an urgent need to accurately predict the number of COVID-19 patients that would require inpatient and ventilator care at the local level. As the pandemic progressed, many healthcare systems relied on such predictions to prepare for COVID-19 surges and to make decisions regarding staffing, the discontinuation of elective procedures, and the amount of personal protective equipment (PPE) …
Do Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Strategies Deter Taggers? Voices From The Street, Arthur Vasquez, Nina Barbieri, John J. Rodriguez
Do Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Strategies Deter Taggers? Voices From The Street, Arthur Vasquez, Nina Barbieri, John J. Rodriguez
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) postulates that jurisdictions can deter crime and antisocial behavior via effective use and proper design of the physical environment. When a jurisdiction implements a CPTED strategy, it makes involvement in criminal behavior more difficult, thereby increasing the chance of being caught. Using interviews with 35 active juvenile street taggers from a large metropolitan area in Texas, this research explores whether implementing CPTED strategies deter offenders from engaging in criminal activity. Results suggest physical barriers, natural surveillance, access, and signage serve as deterrents during the target selection process."

“I Know A Guy”: Examining Homeless Income Generation And Spatial Mobility, Daniel J. Reinhard, Ted Palys
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"This study explores the variety of income-generating activities, along with corresponding distances that homeless and marginally housed persons travel to engage in the activities. Altogether 24 individuals were interviewed, and ethnographic field observations occurred over several months to increase rapport. The qualitatively gathered data were used in ArcGIS to calculate travel distances. These income-generating activities that persons engaged in were commonly forms of shadow work, and many kinds of income-generating activities were found. Among our sample, there appeared to be two distinct groups: those with more income methods and further travels, and those with fewer methods and shorter travels. The …
