Role Of Covid-19 Attributions In Inciting Violence Toward Older Asian Individuals, Emily Zhen Ning Hwang Jan 2022

Role Of Covid-19 Attributions In Inciting Violence Toward Older Asian Individuals, Emily Zhen Ning Hwang

Public Health Theses

Older adults in the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community faced heightened levels of violence and discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, little is known about the factors driving Asian-specific violence. This study investigated if individuals who attributed COVID-19 to stable factors and anything related to China were more likely to commit violence against older Asian adults. From April 23 to May 5 2020, a survey was conducted with 1498 American individuals (M = 55.19 years, SD = 17.97 years) using two online platforms. Participants who made stable attributions about the origin of COVID-19 were significantly more likely to …

A Nonsense Mutation In Gsdmc Is Associated With Cancer Mortality In Dogs, Hang Li Jan 2022

A Nonsense Mutation In Gsdmc Is Associated With Cancer Mortality In Dogs, Hang Li

Public Health Theses

Over 400 distinct canine breeds today were result from artificial selection during the last centuries. And due to the selection pressure from human interest and the founder effects, the difference among individual genomes from one same breed is less than the difference between breeds. 446 samples were included in this study to recognize the cancer-associated nonsense mutations in canine genome. 17 of the 446 samples were lab-recruited dogs, and the other 429 samples were downloaded from Sequence Read Archive. One nonsense mutation in GSDMC protein is found significantly associated with cancer risk in dogs. Since nonsense mutations could provide premature …

Happiness – Concept, Measurement And Promotion, Yew Kwang Ng

eBooks

While interests in issues pertaining to happiness have been long-standing, we have witnessed recently an increasing focus by both scholars and members of the general public. ‘Subjective well-being (SWB) is an extremely active area of research with about 170,000 articles and books published on the topic in the past 15 years’ (Diener et al. 2018, Abstract). Not only psychologists (e.g. Kahneman et al. 1999, Diener et al. 2010, 2018) and sociologists (e.g. Veenhoven 1984, 1993, 2010, 2017), but also economists have made substantial investigations.1 After about 2–3 decades of gestation since the first publication on happiness issues by an economist …

Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher Jan 2022

Food Insecurity For The Immigrant Population During The Novel Coronavirus-19, Bridget Gallagher

The Graduate Review

The novel Coronavisur-19 (COVID-19) has caused s widespread loss of life in the United States and globally and wrought enormous changes to our culture and lives. COVID-19 also has caused and intensified food insecurity, especially for immigrants. The pandemic has made visible and exacerbated longstanding problems of food insecurity and hunger in America. This paper suggests several approaches to mitigating food insecurity. Focusing on the immigrant community, the author argues that we can reduce hunger by reexamining and reinvigorating existing community resources and practical strategies, including neighborhood ethnic food stores, community gardens, advocacy, and outreach programs; and by enlisting specific …

Arrow Of Time, Entropy, And Protein Folding: Holistic View On Biochirality, Victor V. Dyakin, Vladimir N. Uversky Jan 2022

Arrow Of Time, Entropy, And Protein Folding: Holistic View On Biochirality, Victor V. Dyakin, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Chirality is a universal phenomenon, embracing the space–time domains of non-organic and organic nature. The biological time arrow, evident in the aging of proteins and organisms, should be linked to the prevalent biomolecular chirality. This hypothesis drives our exploration of protein aging, in relation to the biological aging of an organism. Recent advances in the chirality discrimination methods and theoretical considerations of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics clarify the fundamental issues, concerning the biphasic, alternative, and stepwise changes in the conformational entropy associated with protein folding. Living cells represent open, non-equilibrium, self-organizing, and dissipative systems. The non-equilibrium thermodynamics of cell biology are …

Fundamental Clock Of Biological Aging: Convergence Of Molecular, Neurodegenerative, Cognitive And Psychiatric Pathways: Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Meet Psychology, Victor V. Dyakin, Nuka V. Dyakina-Fagnano, Laura B. Mcintire, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

In humans, age-associated degrading changes, widely observed in molecular and cellular processes underly the time-dependent decline in spatial navigation, time perception, cognitive and psychological abilities, and memory. Cross-talk of biological, cognitive, and psychological clocks provides an integrative contribution to healthy and advanced aging. At the molecular level, genome, proteome, and lipidome instability are widely recognized as the primary causal factors in aging. We narrow attention to the roles of protein aging linked to prevalent amino acids chirality, enzymatic and spontaneous (non-enzymatic) post-translational modifications (PTMs SP), and non-equilibrium phase transitions. The homochirality of protein synthesis, resulting in the steady-state non-equilibrium condition …

Dementia Care Among Somali Elders, Emmanuel Asante Opoku Jan 2022

Dementia Care Among Somali Elders, Emmanuel Asante Opoku

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Caring for persons with dementia is demanding and complicated since there is “no one-size-fits all formula for dementia care. The care needs to be modified to fit the various stages of the condition and each family's unique situation. Racial and ethnic differences place unique demand on all the forms of dementia care; in-home care (IHC), long-term care (LTC), adult day centers(ADC), short term care (STC) and hospice care (HC).

This paper aimed to study how Somali elders think and interact with dementia care services, from in-home care to hospice care. Some recommendations to study this issue is to do a …

Characterizing Cellular Stress, Hippocampal Function, And Behavior In A Novel Rat Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Anne A. Schulman Jan 2022

Characterizing Cellular Stress, Hippocampal Function, And Behavior In A Novel Rat Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Anne A. Schulman

Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects over 5 million individuals in the United States alone. While AD is primarily thought of as a disease that destroys neural networks required for memory recall and formation, AD also cause impairment in emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and executive function pathways. The cause of AD is unknown; however, the allele ApoE4 has been identified as a risk factor for the onset of AD. ApoE4 provides a valuable opportunity to study AD through animal models. This thesis utilized a human ApoE4 transgenic rat model (hApoE4) to investigate the biological and behavioral …

Reconnecting The Patient: Why Telehealth Policy Solutions Must Consider The Deepening Digital Divide, Laura C. Hoffman Jan 2022

Reconnecting The Patient: Why Telehealth Policy Solutions Must Consider The Deepening Digital Divide, Laura C. Hoffman

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Article will attempt to untangle the complicated web of providing telehealth to those populations it is potentially capable of further alienating from access to healthcare including: 1) race/minority populations, 2) aging adults, 3) individuals with disabilities, 4) non-English speakers, 5) individuals living in rural areas, 6) socioeconomic class, and 7) children, in order to advance the argument that telehealth can be successful in providing healthcare access to these populations. Rather than suggesting that telehealth simply "cannot work" for these populations, instead consideration can and must meet these individuals through technology, access, and policy developments.

First, this Article will explain …

Bostock And Contact Theory: How Will A Single U.S. Supreme Court Decision Reduce Prejudice Against Lgbtq People?, Mantas Grigorovicius

Indiana Law Journal

In 1954, Gordon Allport, one of the nation’s leading social psychologists, laid out a hypothesis explaining how prejudice could be reduced by intergroup contact. Decades later, his hypothesis became a theory with thousands of research hours behind it. Under contact theory, one of the factors that facilitates a reduction in prejudice between two groups is support of authorities or law. This Comment focuses on Bostock v. Clayton County, a recent Supreme Court decision holding that Title VII prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. Allport suggested that antidiscrimination laws help to “lead and guide the folkways,” and this Comment explores how …

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in midlife is associated with a greater risk of dementia in later life. Both gait speed and spatiotemporal gait characteristics have been associated with later cognitive decline in community-dwelling older adults. Thus, the assessment of gait characteristics in uncomplicated midlife T2DM may be important in selecting-out those with T2DM at greatest risk of later cognitive decline. We assessed the relationship between Inertial Motion Unit (IMUs)- derived gait characteristics and cognitive function assessed via Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA)/detailed neuropsychological assessment battery (CANTAB) in middle-aged adults with and without uncomplicated T2DM using both multivariate linear regression and …
