Correlates Of Custodial Grandparents’ Perceived Barriers To The Use Of Services, Bert Hayslip, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Jennifer Ramsey

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

Getting timely access to help, information, and a variety of services is paramount among the challenges of raising a grandchild, and grandparents face a variety of internal and external barriers in getting such help. The present pilot exploratory study focused on caregiving-related and personal resource variables best associated with minority grandparent caregivers’ perceptions of barriers to receiving services. In contrast to previous work, the present study focused on African American and Latino grandparent caregivers. Fifty grandparents (M age = 58.59) of minority status (African American, Latino, Philippine) raising their grandchildren completed measures assessing caregiver strain, social support, resilience, self-care, …

Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen Apr 2022

Mosaic: A Lifetime Of Poems, Emma F. Bowen

Honors Projects

In hopes of providing a clearer picture of the aging process and its effects on our personalities, follow this collection of poems through diary-like entries of individuals navigating their lives from daycare, heartbreak, and loneliness. The impact that development can have on our psychological well-being and brains is fascinating and feels familiar. Why do we see the world so differently when we are young? As we grow older, what is so important that makes us shift how we view ourselves and our environment multiple times? It is often seen that each generation shares like-mindedness throughout their lives – why?

The Use Of Non-Immersive Virtual Reality As A Functional Rehabilitation Tool For Older Adults With Cognitive Decline, Ross M. Divers Apr 2022

The Use Of Non-Immersive Virtual Reality As A Functional Rehabilitation Tool For Older Adults With Cognitive Decline, Ross M. Divers

LSU Master's Theses

There is currently no cure for age-related cognitive decline or dementia and current pharmacologic interventions have had limited success at improving daily functioning. Consequently, older adults who experience cognitive decline require assistance with daily activities, which can be quite expensive and lead to caregiver burden. Repeated performance of everyday tasks has been shown to improve performance but requires supervision and direction by another person. The present study evaluated a low-cost computer training program that will use non-immersive virtual reality to enable participants with dementia or cognitive decline to independently practice meaningful everyday activities (e.g., meal preparation). Participants (N= 8) with …

The Effect Of Estrogen On Gdnf Production Of Skeletal Muscle In Vitro, Hope Welter Apr 2022

The Effect Of Estrogen On Gdnf Production Of Skeletal Muscle In Vitro, Hope Welter

Honors Theses

As life expectancy continues to rise, the number of people over age 65 in the U.S. is increasing. An aging population brings with it impacts on the national health system and associated economic expenditures. As individuals age, the skeletomuscular system suffers reduced function due to disease or conditions such as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is characterized by muscular atrophy resulting from reduced muscle innervation. Exercise has been linked to prevention of sarcopenia, a suspected result of increased production of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). GDNF promotes neuronal survival, regeneration, and the formation of neuromuscular junctions. Therefore, treatments like exercise that increase …

Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov Apr 2022

Literature Review On Outer Hair Cell Regeneration And Potential Hearing Restoration, Serena Karlov

Honors Theses

The cochlea is the portion of the inner ear responsible for hearing, containing both the organ of Corti and auditory hair cells. Sound wave vibrations mechanically bend the stereocilia on the three rows of outer hair cells and one row of inner hair cells. These hair cells transduce this mechanical energy into electrical impulses that are relayed from the auditory nerve to the brain, where sounds are processed. In this review I provide an overview of inner ear anatomy, ear physiology, and auditory transduction. I then move on to specifically focus on the importance of outer hair cells, their regeneration, …

Adverse Childhood Experiences Screening In Adulthood: Knowledge, Attitudes, And Self-Efficacy Among Tennessee Nurse Practitioners, Megan M. Wanca

DNP Projects

Despite the prevalence of adverse childhood events (ACEs) and the relationship with negative health outcomes in adults, research shows clinical use of ACE screening is low among healthcare providers including nurse practitioners (NPs). The scholarly project’s purpose was to examine how Tennessee NP knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy influence intentions to screen for ACEs related to childhood trauma or abuse in adult patients. Using the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model as the theoretical framework, a cross-sectional and exploratory design assessed the association of NPs’ ACE screening knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy on the NPs’ intention to screen for ACEs in adult patients. A reliable …

Implementation Of One-On-One Activities Aimed At Improving Residents Phq9 Scores And Overall Quality Of Life, Margo Achterkirch, Isaac Burgess, Hailey Enneking, Taysha Grinnell, Kate Kokesh, Megan Simonet

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

In long term care facilities, due to the increased amount of isolation and restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the PHQ-9 scores (depression) amongst the geriatric population. Isolation from their families, friends, group activities and other residents was shown to have major effects on their mental health. Throughout our time spent working with residents in the long-term care setting, we focused on the improvement of the residents' mental health and improving their quality of life. It is proven that if someone has good social interactions with other people, then they are more likely to live …

The Effect Of Using The Adaptive Crawler™ On The Development Of Infants With Spina Bifida, Age 6-12 Months, Margaret E. Williams Apr 2022

The Effect Of Using The Adaptive Crawler™ On The Development Of Infants With Spina Bifida, Age 6-12 Months, Margaret E. Williams

Dissertations

During the timeframe of crawling, age 6--12 months, infants typically interact independently with their environment and their parents in order to perform certain developmental tasks. However, many infants with spina bifida are unable to crawl, as would typically developing infants. The inability to crawl may place these infants at a distinct disadvantage during this developmental timeframe. As a result of the developmental disadvantage, the parent-infant relationship may be negatively affected. For this study, the Adaptive Crawler™ assistive technology infant mobility device was designed, and a prototype created, to promote independent mobility and exploration of their environment by infants with spina …

Dancing With Dementia: Using Dance And Movement To Combat The Negative Effects Of Occupational Deprivation In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Mikenzi R. Rivenbark

MOT Student Capstones

As human beings, it is natural to crave interaction with others and to engage within our surrounding environments. Unfortunately, individuals with dementia often lose their ability to independently access and participate within their environment; resulting in occupational deprivation. Occupational deprivation is seen frequently in residents with dementia within a skilled nursing facility (SNF) as they are often left disengaged and seated idle within the facility. Occupational deprivation can lead to psychological and physical illnesses, it can also enhance the progression of dementia, and result in premature death. The use of dance and movement with these residents can provide them the …

The Impact Of An Innovative Simulation On Prelicensure Nursing Student Empathy Levels, Annie Harrison

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Empathy is the ability to see oneself in the situation of another and to take actions on behalf of that individual based on that perception. However, empathy has been shown to decrease in nursing education and continues to do so in nursing practice. Importantly, aspects of empathy have been shown to be teachable. This scholarly practice project examined whether an innovative simulation would increase empathy in prelicensure nursing students. This study, guided by self-determination theory (SDT) and designed according to the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) change model, used a mixed-methods design. The instrument for quantitative data collection was the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire …

Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel Apr 2022

Older Adults Home-Based Care In Cairo: Asset Mapping Towards Community Development, Yomna El-Taweel

Theses and Dissertations

The health and economic consequences of the rapid growth of the older adults’ population above 60 have led to new and more flexible forms of care, including home-based care. In Cairo, Egypt, there seems to be a high demand and preference for home-based care services over other care services like nursing homes. From a policy makers’ perspective, older adults’ needs are sometimes approached in a deficit-oriented way. This might contribute to the disempowerment of older adults and make them feel like people with needs that can only be met by external support. This mixed-method study aimed to contribute to the …

Friendship In A Pandemic: Test Of An Experimental Intervention To Boost The Protective Effect Of Friendship Quality, Hyewon Hong

Honors Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the decrease of general wellbeing and increase in loneliness for many people. Friendships hold a well-established link to positive physical and mental health outcomes, particularly through the social support given by close, high-quality friendships and the improvement of friendship quality may be a novel way to counteract recent declines of mental health. The current research seeks to establish the efficacy of a created intervention designed to increase the friendship quality of an emerging adult population (N = 116). The theory behind the creation and implementation of such an intervention is discussed. The efficacy of …

Previous research indicates that a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there are no studies to date of ACT for OCD in Latin American populations. Because socio-cultural context influences OCD symptomatology, it is worth adapting and testing ACT for OCD in such cultures. Three patients seeking treatment for OCD at a public health center in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil were treated with 16 sessions of ACT and ERP. All participants showed decreased OCD scores from baseline to post-treatment that remained lower at follow-up, suggesting …

A Photography-Based, Social Media Walking Intervention Targeting Autonomous Motivations For Physical Activity: Semistructured Interviews With Older Women, Michael C Robertson, Maria Chang Swartz, Ursela Christopherson, Jason R Bentley, Karen M Basen-Engquist, Debbe Thompson, Elena Volpi, Elizabeth J Lyons

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Older adult women are at risk for negative health outcomes that engaging in sustained physical activity can help prevent. However, promoting long-term maintenance of physical activity in this population has proven to be a challenge. Increasing autonomous motivations (ie, intrinsic, integrated, and identified regulations) for physical activity may facilitate enduring behavior change. Digitally delivered games for health that take a celebratory technology approach, that is, using technology to create new ways to experience valued behaviors and express valued beliefs, may be a useful way to target autonomous motivations for physical activity. Formative research with the target population is needed …
