Getting Police Out Of Schools, Maya Lynch Jan 2022

Getting Police Out Of Schools, Maya Lynch

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper explores the rise and impact of police officers in schools, frequently referred to as School Resource Officers or SROs. In addition to attempting to delegitimize the common explanation that school shootings necessitate SROs and their ongoing presence, the paper goes on to outline two under-researched drivers of SROs. These are the immense underfunding of public K-12 schools which forces a search for additional sources of revenue alongside an ongoing effort to suppress student movements and control students of color. The paper then analyzes three case studies of school districts which, to varying degrees, removed SROs and evaluates their …

Under Guard: A Case Study Of The S.S. Black Point And U-853 For The Production Of More Comprehensive War Memorials And Public Exhibits, Rebecca Sobus

Open Access Master's Theses

The following project addresses how the preservation of memory is affected when memorials and public exhibits develop within a dispersed material cultural landscape. To address this problem, the Battle of Point Judith in May 1945 is used a case study. The Battle of Point Judith and its associated wrecks, the German U-853 and the American SS Black Point, display the positives and negatives of memorialization and public exhibition for historical artifacts across a decentralized material cultural landscape. After analyzing the characteristics of memorials, museums, and memorial-museums through additional examples like Auschwitz-Birkenau and Hiroshima, it may be seen that the Battle …

Radical Rhetoric And The Syrian Revolution: Toward A Telos Of Solidarity, Noor Ghazal Ghazal Aswad Jan 2022

Radical Rhetoric And The Syrian Revolution: Toward A Telos Of Solidarity, Noor Ghazal Ghazal Aswad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Transnational rhetorical scholarship has yet to enact solidarity with the subaltern. “Inclusionary” efforts have actively excluded what I term the “radical subject,” the subject revolting against repressive hegemonic forces to achieve liberatory change in society. As an intervention, this dissertation conceptualizes the Syrian revolution as a rhetorical performance which enacts a theory of its own agency and possibilities, an expression of a liberatory moment where radical subjects rose from under an authoritarian regime’s historic rule. Within this rhetorical performance, the radical subject serves as the chief protagonist, a subject whose rhetoric is informative of both practice and theory. The Syrian …

High School Teachers' Perceptions And Application Of Robert Stahl's Decision-Making Materials In The Social Studies Classroom, Alisha Milam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study investigated high school social studies teachers’ perceptions of Robert Stahl’s decision-making materials within their content area and the relevance of curricular implementation. The primary questions addressed in this study focused on high school social studies teachers’ perception of current instructional practices, inquiry-based learning, state standards, and national frameworks regarding content and classroom instruction. The participants included seven rural high school social studies teachers selected through two-stage random sampling. Participant selection was reduced to rural areas due to the overwhelmingly disproportionate number of rural districts in the state of study. However, to gain a diverse perspective from across the …

Smiting All Foreigners, Subduing All Lands: A Diachronic Study Of Iconographic, Textual, And Ideological Antecedents Of New Kingdom Triumph Scenes, Rebekah Anne Vogel Jan 2022

Smiting All Foreigners, Subduing All Lands: A Diachronic Study Of Iconographic, Textual, And Ideological Antecedents Of New Kingdom Triumph Scenes, Rebekah Anne Vogel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Egyptian New Kingdom triumph scenes, perhaps one of the most recognizable motifs in Egyptian art, adorned the exteriors of temple complexes and depicted the king smiting his enemies and receiving lines of bound toponyms representing subjugated foreign peoples and places. These scenes have often been studied for their relevance to historical geography as well as the military, imperial, and foreign relations history of Egypt. This study approaches New Kingdom triumph scenes instead as composite ideological motifs that deliberately combined specific iconographic and textual elements in a display of royal victory. It identifies the constituent elements of the motif, traces their …

River System Input, Alongshore Transport, And Regional Sediment Mixing Of Coastal Deposits In Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Usa, Katelyn Deann Giles Jan 2022

River System Input, Alongshore Transport, And Regional Sediment Mixing Of Coastal Deposits In Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, Usa, Katelyn Deann Giles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

To determine sediment sources, track alongshore transport, and investigate sediment mixing, I present detrital-zircon U-Pb geochronology from the Mississippi, Mobile, and Apalachicola rivers, as well as five beach and barrier island deposits in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico (USA). Comparison of coastal deposits to river input U-Pb age spectra and Th/U values shows that beach and barrier island deposits are sourced from the Apalachicola and Mobile rivers. Inverse mixing models suggest that coastal deposits are primarily composed of Apalachicola River sediment with some Mobile River and little to no Mississippi River material. At Dauphin Island, the Mobile River contributes the …

Language Policy And Indigenous Language In The Linguistic Landscape Of Asunción, Paraguay, Perry Hardin Jan 2022

Language Policy And Indigenous Language In The Linguistic Landscape Of Asunción, Paraguay, Perry Hardin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The field of Linguistic Landscape (LL) has been increasingly used as an effective way of researching, discovering, and better comprehending complex sociolinguistic phenomena. One focus of LL study is the way public displays of language in signs reflect and shape society’s beliefs about language, which in turn influences language practices. In addition, LL research frequently deals with the policies that attempt to influence what languages are used in signs. This study explores the multilingualism and language policy of Paraguay through a sociolinguistic lens by documenting the LL and investigating the factors that influence its construction in the capital city, Asunción. …

Optimizing Pattern-Based Calibration Of Cellular Automata By Imperialistic Competitive Algorithm, Ehsan Momeni Jan 2022

Optimizing Pattern-Based Calibration Of Cellular Automata By Imperialistic Competitive Algorithm, Ehsan Momeni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Land use and land cover (LULC) data analyses disclosed large land conversion in Shelby County, TN, between 1990 and 2010. LULC mixtures have significant associations with socio-demographics and travel behavior. Mathematical modeling is used to forecast urban expansion in order to promote sustainable development. Cellular automata (CA) is a popular approach for the simulation of urban growth. Nevertheless, precise calibration of CA is challenging due to uncertainties and its knowledge-intensive process. Shannon relative indices (SRIs) have been used in this study as an indicator of land patterns to calibrate a CA model of urban growth in Shelby County. The results …

Canyon Or Crevasse? The Gender Pay Gap In Nursing, Stanley Carlton Wilkins Jan 2022

Canyon Or Crevasse? The Gender Pay Gap In Nursing, Stanley Carlton Wilkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite good progress toward gender equality in recent decades, women continue to lag significantly behind men in wages and compensation at workplaces. This study examines the gender pay gap in the nursing profession – one traditionally female dominated field. By analyzing the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) data, I conduct cross-tabulation and multivariate linear regression analyses to test two core hypotheses: (1) men are more likely to work in the nursing fields with higher pay; and (2) male nurses tend to have higher wages than female nurses. I find that female nurses predominate in the fields with lower pay, such …

Lifting Labor’S Voice: A Principled Path Toward Greater Worker Voice And Power Within American Corporate Governance, Leo E. Strine Jr., Aneil Kovvali, Oluwatomi O. Williams Jan 2022

Lifting Labor’S Voice: A Principled Path Toward Greater Worker Voice And Power Within American Corporate Governance, Leo E. Strine Jr., Aneil Kovvali, Oluwatomi O. Williams

Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership

The dramatic decline in corporate gainsharing with American workers over the last two generations has contributed to stagnating wages, soaring inequality, and economic insecurity. There are global causes of greater inequality and depressed pay that go beyond the decline in workers’ share. But many public policymakers and economists believe that the reduced share of corporate prof its that American workers receive has been a major factor in the much larger increase in inequality that has occurred in the United States, compared to its market economy allies in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). To some, the explanation for …

Sharing The Shore: Hybridity And Developing Environmentalisms In The Indiana Dunes, Olivia Klein Jan 2022

Sharing The Shore: Hybridity And Developing Environmentalisms In The Indiana Dunes, Olivia Klein

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis centers on the Indiana Dunes National Park, located in Northwestern Indiana, and the implications of this hybrid landscape on modern American environmentalism. Through secondary source research, historical analysis, and interviews with Miller Beach residents and a park ranger, this research concludes that the Indiana Dunes demonstrate an environmentalism that exists outside of the nature-culture binary. By incorporating the park into existing cities and industrial developments, the Indiana Dunes can be seen as a model for an environmental justice-driven space that diverges from the historic elitism of the National Park service. This research concludes that, while hybrid landscapes come …

Lively Emu Dialogues: Activating Feminist Common Worlding Pedagogies, Mindy Blaise, Catherine Hamm Jan 2022

Lively Emu Dialogues: Activating Feminist Common Worlding Pedagogies, Mindy Blaise, Catherine Hamm

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper draws from a series of Place-thought walks that the authors took at an open-range zoo. It practices a feminist common worlds multispecies ethics to challenge the systems that maintain nature-culture divisions in early childhood education. Postdevelopmental perspectives (i.e., feminist environmental humanities, multispecies studies, Indigenous studies) are brought into conversation with early childhood education to consider how zoo-logics maintain binaries and hierarchical thinking. Zoo-logics are related to developmental, colonial, and Western ways of reasoning and being in the world. Two feminist approaches to ethics, (re)situating and dialoguing, are discussed and show how they are necessary for undermining binaries and …

Mountain Men Reveal Yellowstone: Observations Of Daniel Potts, Warren Ferris, And Osborne Russell In The 1820s And 1830s, Jay H. Buckley, Nathan Benavidez

Faculty Publications

As Yellowstone National Park celebrates its 150th anniversary as the first such park in the world, it is fascinating to rediscover the records of mountain men and and that the same features that enthrall modern visitors captivated them as well. “Sonder” is the realization that other people with whom we share the mortal coil have lived lives just as complex and wonderous as our own. Americans can no better appreciate this than when they stand in Yellowstone National Park today and marvel at the same grandeur mountain men witnessed two hundred years ago.

Sense And The City: An Emotion Data Framework For Smart City Governance, Katharine S. Willis, Christian Nold Jan 2022

Sense And The City: An Emotion Data Framework For Smart City Governance, Katharine S. Willis, Christian Nold

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In the smart city agenda, data plays a key role in shaping governance and participation around urban planning, and this data is increasingly derived from sensors of all kinds. These sensors increasingly include physiological and sentiment analysis to gauge the emotional states of urban citizens. In urban planning, emotional data has so far been conceptualised as ‘people as sensors’ where data is used to create an aggregated emotion layer for real-time urban planning. This paper argues this approach does not enable citizens any meaningful participation in urban planning. In contrast, this paper demonstrates what emotion can ‘do’ when citizen actively …

Opportunities And Barriers Faced By Early-Career Civil Engineers Enacting Global Responsibility, Shannon Chance, Inês Direito, John Mitchell Jan 2022

Opportunities And Barriers Faced By Early-Career Civil Engineers Enacting Global Responsibility, Shannon Chance, Inês Direito, John Mitchell

Articles

The term ‘global responsibility’ projects a holistic sense of ethics, sustainability, and obligation. To achieve the long-term viability of human life on Earth, civil engineering must be conducted in increasingly responsible ways, and civil engineers must value and enact global responsibility in their work. Interviews conducted with nine civil engineers in London provide insight regarding engineers’ familiarity with the term, how they learned about it, what opportunities and barriers they face, and what might be done by professional and educational institutions to help them practice more responsibly. Results indicate: the term itself is novel but underlying concepts are not; continuing …

A Computational Method To Track The Evolution Of Business Models In The Digital Economy, Z Wood, D Walker, G Parry

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Companies within the Digital Economy are evolving their business models as they take advantage of the opportunities afforded by emerging digital technologies. There is a need to develop methods that will allow researchers and policy makers to understand the existence of, and relationships between, the different business models within the Digital Economy and track their evolution. Such methods could also help quantify the size and growth of the Digital Economy. This paper presents a computational method, which utilizes machine learning and web scraping, to identify new business models, and a taxonomy of organisations, through the analysis of a firm's webpage. …

Human Affinity For Rivers, Yichu Wang, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Jinren Ni Jan 2022

Human Affinity For Rivers, Yichu Wang, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Jinren Ni

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Human civilization prospers along rivers worldwide. Here, we investigated human–river relations by revealing the linkage between water and habitability for human settlements, and socioeconomic and cultural development across China. We found that human–water co-occurrence relationships are self-similar over sub-basins for different scales of stream-order in the river networks. According to the earlier complete demographic census conducted during the reign of the Qing Dynasty (1776), there has been a general tendency for inhabitants to live close to rivers, characterized by population density associated with habitability cored by water under a near-natural state, which still remains to date (2019) even after long-term …

An Exploration Of The Contribution Of Embodied, Situated Research Strategies To Cultural Ecosystem Services And Landscape Assessment Frameworks: An Environmental Empathy Case Study, K Łucznik, Jv Serrano, J Martin Jan 2022

An Exploration Of The Contribution Of Embodied, Situated Research Strategies To Cultural Ecosystem Services And Landscape Assessment Frameworks: An Environmental Empathy Case Study, K Łucznik, Jv Serrano, J Martin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, interest has increased in cultural ecosystem services (CESs) research to understand the complexity of the non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. The intangible and interactive characteris-tics of CESs present many challenges regarding how to approach, quantify and even de-fine CESs. In this paper, we suggest looking at CESs through the lens of embodied and situated cognition theories. We advocate that such an approach should be applied to the development stage of CES research projects, as the embodied and situated experience of the site aids the development of research questions and future interventions. …

“What Works” Registries Of Interventions To Improve Child And Youth Psychosocial Outcomes: A Critical Appraisal, Nick Axford, Louise Morpeth, Gretchen Bjornstad, Tim Hobbs, Vashti Berry

Peninsula Medical School

The last decade or more has seen a proliferation of online registries of evidence-based interventions designed to improve child and youth psychosocial outcomes. The purpose of these resources is typically to help decision-makers make sense of the evidence and thereby inform their decision-making about investment in interventions. Most registries are underpinned by standards of evidence, which are used to guide the rating of programs by a panel of experts. While supporters extol the influence of these initiatives in terms of making commissioners more discriminating about what they invest in, detractors contend that they stifle innovation and embody an unduly narrow …
