The Educational Trajectories Of Latinx Undocumented Students: Illegality And Threats To Emotional Well-Being, Alessandra Bazo Vienrich, Rosalie A. Torres Stone

Sociology

For undocumented students, the high school–to–college pipeline is filled with social, economic, and psychological stressors. Yet very little is known about the impact of legal status on the experiences of undocumented Latinx college students living in states without tuition equity policies. Using qualitative data from 37 interviews exploring undocumented college students’ educational trajectories in Massachusetts and North Carolina, the authors examine the impact of legal status on the emotional well-being of undocumented Latinx students, including those who benefited from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The findings show that even when undocumented students gain access to higher education, barriers to legal …

The Art Market’S Inflection Point: The Inception Of Modern Art Investment, Maria B. Abraham Jan 2022

The Art Market’S Inflection Point: The Inception Of Modern Art Investment, Maria B. Abraham

MA Theses

The relationship between art and finance derives from the socioeconomic realization that art has high-value potential and diversification benefits within the investment sphere. This paper interprets the evolution of art's financialization in three different market contexts as the cause of an inflection point in the art market. Through research in press articles, interviews, published white papers, and journals on statistical art data analysis results, this thesis demonstrates the link between cultural capital and financial investment, which gave rise to initiatives today that bridge the gap between wealth and the accessibility to the art market. A technological or specialized element across …

An Expert-Curated Global Database Of Online Newspaper Articles On Spiders And Spider Bites, Stefano Mammola, Laura Segura-Hernández, Et Al.

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010– 2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content—location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type of errors, consultation of experts, and a subjective assessment of sensationalism. In …

The Democratic (Il)Legitimacy Of Assembly-Line Litigation, Jessica Steinberg, Colleen Shanahan, Anna Carpenter, Alyx Mark Jan 2022

The Democratic (Il)Legitimacy Of Assembly-Line Litigation, Jessica Steinberg, Colleen Shanahan, Anna Carpenter, Alyx Mark

Faculty Articles

In response to Daniel Wilf-Townsend’s Assembly-Line Plaintiffs we take a panoramic picture of state civil courts, and debt cases in particular, and name specific features of the courts that must be taken into account in crafting reform prescriptions. In doing so, we question both the democratic legitimacy of debt collection courts and the adequacy of incremental reform that targets the structure of litigation. Part I contributes two critical components to Wilf-Townsend’s rich description of consumer debt cases: pervasive intersectional inequality among pro se defendants and a record of fraud among top filers. We add a sharper focus on the racial, …

Mapping The Civil Justice Gap In Federal Court, Roger Michalski, Andrew Hammond Jan 2022

Mapping The Civil Justice Gap In Federal Court, Roger Michalski, Andrew Hammond

Faculty Articles

Unrepresented litigants make up a sizable and normatively important chunk of civil litigation in the federal courts. Despite their importance, we still know little about who these pro se litigants are. Debates about pro se litigation take place without sufficient empirical information. To help fill some of the gaps in our understanding of pro se litigants, this Article takes a new approach by mapping where pro se litigants live. Using a massive data set of 2.5 million federal dockets from a ten-year period, we obtained addresses of non-prisoner pro se litigants. We then geolocated these addresses and cross-referenced that information …

A Gis Analysis Of Potential Wetland Mitigation Opportunities In The Brandywine Creek Watershed, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Shannon Ryan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Wetlands provide innumerous functions and values that are beneficial to both the natural environment and economic systems. Historically these habitats have suffered significant losses and it is crucial to preserve existing wetlands and plan for future restoration opportunities. This research examines six sub-watersheds within the Brandywine Creek watershed within Chester County, Pennsylvania to determine where potential wetland mitigation opportunities occur. Using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, three wetland characteristics including watercourse locations, existing National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) wetlands, and hydric soils were mapped throughout each of the watersheds. Areas of agricultural easements and steep slopes were used to exclude …

Investigating Mobility Through An Oxygen Isotope Study Of The Medieval Cemetery At Kilroot, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Hannah Pytleski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Mobility is an important, multifaceted process involving complex interactions of culture, politics, and economics while also intersecting with individual identities, like religion, status, gender, and age. As such, a multitude of people from different origins can comprise a settlement or a community, which may be detectable through biogeochemical assessment. This study employs stable oxygen and carbon isotopic analysis to evaluate evidence for residential mobility within the early to late Medieval Kilroot cemetery (c. 6th to 16th centuries A.D.) at County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The site is 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) east of Carrickfergus Castle and the surrounding town, which was …

A total of 34 bone samples were analyzed, and 31 of those samples were determined to be well-preserved. These data were …

Quality Of Life: How Does Race Influence Residential Satisfaction In Cities, Alexis Kelly Jan 2022

Quality Of Life: How Does Race Influence Residential Satisfaction In Cities, Alexis Kelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The main concepts addressed within this study are neighborhood security, culture in cities, immigration, White flight, and gentrification. Although Whites originally settled in cities, an influx of foreigners encouraged racial dispersion and seclusion. Ultimately, Whites fled to suburban and rural areas while racial minorities remained in the city. The historic relocation of Whites led to the neglect of the city and its occupants, Thus, the motivation for this study revolves around the idea that race-related exclusion influences quality of life and residential satisfaction in cities. Data were obtained from the General Social Survey to examine the relationship between quality of …

Homicide Patterns In Urban Places:A Geospatial Analysis Of Homicide In Baltimore, M.D., Kayla Toohy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Extant criminological research examining research questions oriented on understanding the spatial distribution of violent crime instances, such as homicide, have often employed the theoretical foundations of both social disorganization theory and routine activities theory. Though there is much research using these theories independently and in conjunction with one another, few studies have integrated the theories in analyses of homicide at multiple levels of aggregation. The current study is conducted to analyze homicide incidents in Baltimore, Maryland from 2014 through 2018. The analysis conducted considers both social disorganization and routine activities theory variables to test the explanatory power of each theory …

This study focuses on on-dock rail, where the rail terminal is located within the marine container terminal. On-dock rail has in recent years become an essential mode of transportation to move containers out of congested marine container terminals. This study contributes to the literature by presenting tailored exact solution algorithms for a recently proposed optimization model to optimize the loading of double-stack trains. In particular, a 3-stage solution framework is presented for the case when rail cars have …

An Econometric Analysis Of Domestic Aviation In The Us, Sudipta Dey Tirtha Jan 2022

An Econometric Analysis Of Domestic Aviation In The Us, Sudipta Dey Tirtha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In this dissertation, we examine two dimensions of domestic aviation - demand and delay - that directly influence economic impact of the sector. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of airline demand employing airline data compiled by Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The demand analysis is conducted in three steps. First, we propose a novel modeling approach for modeling airline demand evolution over time. Specifically, we develop a joint panel group generalized ordered probit (GGOP) model system for modeling air passenger arrivals and departures in a discretized framework that subsumes the traditional linear regression approach. Further, we consider the influence of observed …

Post-Pandemic, But Not Post-Racial, Courtney Lauren Anderson Jan 2022

Post-Pandemic, But Not Post-Racial, Courtney Lauren Anderson

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The Fair Housing Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act have had measurable success in providing opportunities to address intentional discrimination in housing and voting contexts. Plaintiffs with evidence of direct illegalities have clear frameworks under which justice may be sought, and both Acts provide a path for relief upon violations of housing and voting rights because of one’s membership in a protected class. However, the disparate impact theories that are cognizable under both Acts have been scrutinized for lackluster results. Practitioners and academicians have written about and experienced the difficulties plaintiffs face in successfully proving that a particular housing …

Meeting Water Affordability Challenges In The Era Of The Unexpected, Amy Hardberger Jan 2022

Meeting Water Affordability Challenges In The Era Of The Unexpected, Amy Hardberger

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The vast majority of Americans depend on a public water supply for the procurement and delivery of their water. Water providers are tasked with securing water supplies for the future, building and maintaining the infrastructure needed for delivery, and ensuring service is available for new customers. This system has worked for many decades in part because the costs of water and construction were relatively low; however, in the past twenty years, water rates have increased at twice the rate of inflation. At the same time, income has remained stagnant. Water services now require a larger percentage of household budgets than …

The Inspired Author’S Intent Building Our Scholarship To Learn By Study And Also By Faith, Shad Anderson

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In our devotional teaching, we are fairly successful in helping students ask questions about what the scriptures they are studying mean to them. Students asking these types of questions may produce thoughtful insights. But does seeking what a scripture means to a student, devoid of a real understanding of what the ancient author originally intended, do enough to help our students truly engage with and fully access the power of the scriptures in their lives? My purpose with this paper is to make the case that it generally does not. When our students understand the scripture author’s original intent, I …

Visualizing An Anti-Capitalist Future Amidst A Commodified Landscape: Learning From The African Savanna Elephant, Eloise Magoncelli Jan 2022

Visualizing An Anti-Capitalist Future Amidst A Commodified Landscape: Learning From The African Savanna Elephant, Eloise Magoncelli

Scripps Senior Theses

An ongoing evolution of commodified elephants has shaped the way contemporary conservation theory approaches the species’ role in human-wildlife ecosystems today. This process has made their survival seemingly contingent upon capitalism, their value often higher than the humans they neighbor, and resolutions to ivory trade-related problems complicated by sources of profit, exploitation, and colonial-era structures of power. Must this be the case?
