College For All: Issues In Higher Education (Educ 166) Syllabus, Lisa Smulyan
Aydelotte Curricular Grants
In this seminar, we examine institutions of higher education as spaces within which individuals and social structures are both reproduced and recreated. Questions to be explored include: How has the (often racist and colonial) history of US postsecondary education shaped its present structures? What are the goals of the many different forms of postsecondary institutions? Who has access - and who controls that access? How do institutional structures and cultures impact student learning, student identity, and student experience? The seminar will focus explicitly on how institutions and student experiences are shaped by the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation.
Groundwater Law, The San Luis Valley, And Climate Change, Rachel Grabenstein
Groundwater Law, The San Luis Valley, And Climate Change, Rachel Grabenstein
Student Published Scholarship
A vast region of the western United States is in the grips of the first climate change-induced megadrought observed in the past 1,200 years.
This paper explores how climate change and the current groundwater legal regimes interact in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The Valley was chosen as a case study because it is an example of a community that introduced voluntary measures to address the overuse of groundwater. This paper examines how those measures might have been sufficient if not for the additional challenge of climate change.
This paper will first explain the history of water management in the Valley. …

China’S “Wolf Warrior” Diplomacy: A New Kind Of American Exceptionalism?, Benjamin Vazquez
China’S “Wolf Warrior” Diplomacy: A New Kind Of American Exceptionalism?, Benjamin Vazquez
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
China’s recent strident and aggressive foreign relations have earned Chinese diplomats the title of “wolf warriors.” These attitudes have been partially excused due to China’s successful response to many recent global crises as compared to Western states. Along with the US struggling to maintain its spheres of influence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, China now poses a real threat to American primacy. How will China balance its newfound confidence with enduring insecurities? Is this “wolf warrior” diplomacy a valid criticism, or just an ignorant foreign perspective on how China should behave?

The Scope Of Inductive Risk, P.D. Magnus
The Scope Of Inductive Risk, P.D. Magnus
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
The Argument from Inductive Risk (AIR) is taken to show that values are inevitably involved in making judgements or forming beliefs. After reviewing this conclusion, I pose cases which are prima facie counterexamples: the unreflective application of conventions, use of black-boxed instruments, reliance on opaque algorithms, and unskilled observation reports. These cases are counterexamples to the AIR posed in ethical terms as a matter of personal values. Nevertheless, it need not be understood in those terms. The values which load a theory choice may be those of institutions or past actors. This means that the challenge of responsibly handling inductive …
Challenge By Choice And Its Impact On Enrollment And Achievement For Advanced Placement Students, Jessica Williams
Challenge By Choice And Its Impact On Enrollment And Achievement For Advanced Placement Students, Jessica Williams
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a Challenge by Choice policy instituted in 2011 on AP course taking and performance in a suburban, New York high school. Before this policy, the school used a tracking system based on grade point averages and teacher recommendation in order for students to be eligible for an Advanced Placement class; after, students were allowed to enroll themselves without completing any predetermined requirements. This study used ANOVAs and time series analyses to analyze the differences in means of student enrollment and achievement in AP classes among students before, during, and …

Global Mindedness Of Superintendents: A Phenomenological Study Of Globalization And Its Implications For Education, Lauren Kate Dimartino
Theses and Dissertations
Globalization has quickly woven its way into every aspect of our economic, technological, and social lives. It is only natural that the educational system transforms into a globally competent powerhouse. We must hold our educational system accountable for creating quality education based on equity and realistic policies. With skilled leaders creating school districts that can compete, thrive, and communicate in the global community, we must work to nurture future generations that can maneuver and excel in the 21st century. The purpose of this research is to analyze the global mindedness of educational leaders, specifically superintendents, and to explore the future …
The Relevance Of Ethical Standards Among Veteran Superintendents, Kevin Scanlon
The Relevance Of Ethical Standards Among Veteran Superintendents, Kevin Scanlon
Theses and Dissertations
Ethical violations in education exist worldwide. Superintendents of schools are in the unique position of exerting their authority and influence on the entire community. They also contend with ethically challenging situations. The purpose of the study is to determine the extent to which superintendents are influenced more by their experiences versus their training in ethical standards when ethically challenging situations confront them. In response to ethical issues that have occurred in education, academic institutions and districts have attempted to rectify the issue by further training and practices. This study determined that existing superintendents in New York utilize their own experiences …
Student-Centered Learning In The Social Studies Classroom: Effective Strategies That Build Critical Thinking, Brandon Searles
Student-Centered Learning In The Social Studies Classroom: Effective Strategies That Build Critical Thinking, Brandon Searles
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Critical thinking is a crucial skill which today’s K-12 students must develop in order to be engaged and curious global citizens. The social studies classroom is a proxy for democratic participation and therefore an exemplary setting to spark student critical thinking. This educator sought to discern the effectiveness of student-centered learning strategies as it relates to the development of student critical thinking. When educators adopt a social constructivist pedagogical practice, students are placed at the center of all classroom instruction and provided opportunities to assimilate prior knowledge with newly constructed knowledge. Research reveals that such a classroom setting pushes students …

How 9-12 Grade Students Find Success In Elective Courses In The United States, Laura Doberstein
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Learning is social, emotional, and academic. Piecing together these elements in conjunction with applying scientific research based on these areas will help to ensure a basis for which students may be successful in the classes they choose to take in high school, or their elective courses. Research shows that student success stems from students having their basic needs met in order for them to be able to focus on other information being presented to them and their ability to absorb and apply that information to what they already know. Students must also be supported both academically with provided support by …
How Secondary Art Teachers Can Develop 21st Century Skills Of Creativity Through The Creative Process, Jason Kyle Kehrer
How Secondary Art Teachers Can Develop 21st Century Skills Of Creativity Through The Creative Process, Jason Kyle Kehrer
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review explores how secondary art teachers can develop 21st century skills of creativity through the creative process. Creativity is not easy to define. Many researchers and individuals define it differently or see creativity as only for artists. Because of this, it is hard to pinpoint what creativity is exactly. Creativity is different things to different people. Several definitions of creativity are explored and how it is seen as a skill in the 21st century. Research is shared on what employers think of creativity, and then an overview of the eight Studio Habits of Mind is covered in this …
Choosing Educational Strategies To Develop Social Studies Knowledge And Encourage Civic And Political Participation Among Students With Special Education Needs, Marc Louis Biermann
Choosing Educational Strategies To Develop Social Studies Knowledge And Encourage Civic And Political Participation Among Students With Special Education Needs, Marc Louis Biermann
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research will address three questions: 1) To what extent do people with disabilities participate in the political process, 2) What do studies reveal about social studies education for students with disabilities, and 3) How can teachers prepare students with disabilities to improve their knowledge of history and government and thereby better participate in civic and political processes. In particular, the thesis will suggest a number of instructional strategies and interventions to improve students with disabilities’ mastery of the traditional, heavily text-laden subject of social studies. The goal of this literature review is to synthesize this research in order to …
The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins
The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the state of Minnesota, the standardized testing, known as the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) test, does not have a requirement for social studies. Math, reading and sciences are all tested, but social studies is left to the wayside. All across the United States more and more school districts are placing less value on social studies, choosing to focus more time on the subjects that will either be state tested or they deem “most” useful to students in their future careers. With recent current events rocking the United States, both politically and socially, it seems that the country is becoming …

Hurricanes Substantially Reduce The Nutrients In Tropical Forested Watersheds In Puerto Rico, Jiamei Sun, Xinyuan Wei, Yu Zhou, Catherine Chan, Jiaojiao Diao
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Because nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus are generally limited in tropical forest ecosystems in Puerto Rico, a quantitative understanding of the nutrient budget at a watershed scale is required to assess vegetation growth and predict forest carbon dynamics. Hurricanes are the most frequent disturbance in Puerto Rico and play an important role in regulating lateral nitrogen and phosphorus exports from the forested watershed. In this study, we selected seven watersheds in Puerto Rico to examine the immediate and lagged effects of hurricanes on nitrogen and phosphorous exports. Our results suggest that immediate surges of heavy precipitation associated with hurricanes accelerate …

In 2006, Walker et al. published an article titled, “A Handful of Heuristics and Some Propositions for Understanding Resilience in Social-ecological Systems.” The article was incorporated into the Ecology and Society special feature, Exploring Resilience in Social-Ecological Systems. Walker et al. identified five heuristics and posed 14 propositions for understanding resilience in social-ecological systems. At the time, the authors hoped the paper would promote experimentation, critique, and application of these ideas in resilience and social-ecological systems research. To determine the extent to which these propositions have achieved the authors’ hopes, we reviewed the scientific literature on socialecological systems since the …

Agricultural crop cover identification is a major issue and time-consuming effort to verify the crop type through surveys of the individual field or using prehistoric methods. To establish the scenario of crop identification, the stage of crop provides diverse spatial information about the variety of crops due to its spectral changes. The main aim of this study was to the identify the crop types and their behavior using remote sensing and geographical information system-based approach. Moreover, two main methods were applied to the Sentinel-2 satellite data in which one is random forest based supervised classification and another was Normalize Difference …

Imaging spectroscopy provides the opportunity to incorporate leaf and canopy optical data into ecological studies, but the extent to which remote sensing of vegetation can enhance the study of belowground processes is not well understood. In terrestrial systems, aboveground and belowground vegetation quantity and quality are coupled, and both influence belowground microbial processes and nutrient cycling. We hypothesized that ecosystem productivity, and the chemical, structural and phylogenetic-functional composition of plant communities would be detectable with remote sensing and could be used to predict belowground plant and soil processes in two grassland biodiversity experiments: the BioDIV experiment at Cedar Creek Ecosystem …

Tree rings provide an invaluable long-term record for understanding how climate and other drivers shape tree growth and forest productivity. However, conventional tree-ring analysis methods were not designed to simultaneously test effects of climate, tree size, and other drivers on individual growth. This has limited the potential to test ecologically relevant hypotheses on tree growth sensitivity to environmental drivers and their interactions with tree size. Here, we develop and apply a new method to simultaneously model nonlinear effects of primary climate drivers, reconstructed tree diameter at breast height (DBH), and calendar year in generalized least squares models that account for …
