Witnessing Climate Change: What I Have Learned From My Expeditions To The Greenland Ice Sheet, Åsa Rennermalm

Sustainability Seminar Series

Greenland ice sheet and the Arctic region are experiencing some of the largest impacts of climate change on Earth. Since the 1990s, Greenland ice sheet surface melting has increased and is now one of the leading drivers of global sea‐level rise. For over a decade, my team and I have traveled to Greenland to study how climate change transforms the surface melting of the ice sheet. In this talk, I will share what we have learned from observing rivers on the ice sheet and tundra, and from extracting shallow ice cores high up on the ice sheet. Our ice cores …

Rapid growth of technology change the way of people to search, acquire, arrange and retrieve of information. The impact of technology has greatly affected on information searching pattern of college students. It’s a high time for traditional libraries to change their approach as the availability of the digital resources is growing day by day. Librarian has the responsibility to identify what kind of information needed by the users and how it can be provide them effectively. Thus academic libraries need to upgrade their facilities to cope up with the changing needs of users. Library need to implement more technology-based infrastructure …

The Peculiar Double-Consciousness Of Twail, Mohsen Al Attar Jan 2022

The Peculiar Double-Consciousness Of Twail, Mohsen Al Attar

Indonesian Journal of International Law

Shunning the Eurocentrism that colours much mainstream scholarship, TWAIL has centred in international legal scholarship the views of peoples historically marginalised in the imperial-colonial process. In a single generation, its interventions have shifted perceptions of international law across the academy, forcing scholars to account for the partialities of our purportedly universal international legal regime. Yet, despite embracing iconoclasm and critique, TWAIL is also denoted by a formalist streak. Many of its scholars are committed to the regime, towing an orthodox line that appears counter-intuitive, even inconsistent. In this article, I use WEB Du Bois’ concept of double-consciousness to explain the …

Rankin, Andrew Pearl, Trina Jorre De St Jorre, Moriah Mcsharry Mcgrath, Sarah Dyer, Multiple Additional Authors

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recognizing that university statements about equity, diversity, and inclusion are often cosmetic, performative, or at best, aspirational, rather than indicative of on-campus realities, this project analyzes interpretations of student identity and diversity through publicly available materials. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate how university messages about equity, diversity, and inclusion, available through public websites, are interpreted by faculty and students. Using a students-as-partners approach, we identified and analyzed themes based on our own perceptions and understandings of each of five university websites University of Calgary (Canada), University of Alabama (USA), Deakin University (Australia), University of Exeter (UK), …

The Impact Of Geopolitical Risk On Corporate Investment: Evidence From Turkish Firms, Omer Faruk Tan, Hakan Cavlak, Yasin Cebeci, Necati Güneş Jan 2022

The Impact Of Geopolitical Risk On Corporate Investment: Evidence From Turkish Firms, Omer Faruk Tan, Hakan Cavlak, Yasin Cebeci, Necati Güneş

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This study analyzes the effects of geopolitical risk on the corporate investment of 164 Turkish manufacturing firms listed in Borsa Istanbul (BIST). The time covers the period from 2005 to 2019, applying the system Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) estimator. The results indicate that geopolitical risk hurts corporate investment in Turkey. Under uncertainty induced by geographical risk, firms prefer to decline their investment. Additionally, financially constrained (non-dividend, small, young) firms are more negatively affected than financially unconstrained firms. Our findings are robust under alternative measures of geopolitical risk. Overall, this study reveals that geopolitical risk is a significant uncertainty affecting …

Technology Mergers And The Market For Corporate Control, Geoffrey A. Manne, Samuel Bowman, Dirk Auer Jan 2022

Technology Mergers And The Market For Corporate Control, Geoffrey A. Manne, Samuel Bowman, Dirk Auer

Missouri Law Review

Several high-profile academic articles and reports claim to have identified important gaps in current merger enforcement rules, particularly with respect to tech and pharma acquisitions involving nascent and potential competitors—so-called “killer acquisitions” and “kill zones.” As a result of these perceived deficiencies, scholars and enforcers have called for tougher rules, including the introduction of lower merger filing thresholds and substantive changes, such as the inversion of the burden of proof when authorities review mergers and acquisitions in the digital platform industry. Meanwhile, and seemingly in response to the increased political and advocacy pressures around the issue, U.S. antitrust enforcers have …

Writing As Memory Work Teaching The Civic Deliberations Over Monument Removals, Jill Swiencicki, Barbara Lowe Jan 2022

Writing As Memory Work Teaching The Civic Deliberations Over Monument Removals, Jill Swiencicki, Barbara Lowe

English Faculty/Staff Publications

Social justice goals are usually sought in civic or community settings in which stakeholders represent competing frameworks about what is just, good, and true. Modeling for students a way to identify these competing frameworks, and then intervene in deliberations to achieve just ends, is the focus of our assignment sequence. We examine civic deliberations over removing racist public symbols in this assignment for first-year students enrolled in linked rhetoric and philosophy courses. We read broadly in theories of public memory and civic identity, examine in depth one community’s deliberation, and reflect on public symbols in our home communities. The final …

The Use Of Socio-Spatial Data For Sustainable Roads Planning: A National Forest Case Study, Lee Cerveny, Rebecca Mclain, David Banis, A. Todd

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

National forest roads allow access to public lands providing connections to natural and cultural heritage. Planning processes that address potential road closures or conversions can be highly contentious. Public participatory GIS (PPGIS) has been used as a tool to gather information for environmental planning and decision-making. Our PPGIS approach in a national forest in Washington (USA) incorporated workshops and online engagement with 1,810 participants to gather public input for sustainable roads planning. We identified the most important forest destinations and developed an analytical framework for assessing forest roads based on the density and diversity of use. In this paper, we …

Precarity And Motherhood In Philippine Trans Cinema, Mikee Inton-Campbell Jan 2022

Precarity And Motherhood In Philippine Trans Cinema, Mikee Inton-Campbell

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

In this short essay, I reflect on representations and themes in trans cinema in the Philippines. I examine the emerging and intersecting themes of precarity and motherhood in two recent films –Rod Singh’s Mamu and a Mother too (2018), and Isabel Sandoval’s Lingua Franca (2020). I look at how economic and social precarity tends to pervade the lives of trans women, and how transness itself becomes a form of precarity under the legal system’s lack of accommodation to trans rights. I also examine trans motherhood and make the argument that while it destabilizes biology as the root of motherhood, it …

The Pontem Path: A Case Study Of A Catholic Bridge Program Focusing On College Readiness, Sean Green

Dissertations

The Department of Education’s 2018 report on the “Condition of Education” indicated nearly 60% of all children under the age of 18 had parents without a bachelor’s degree. When the statistics were broken down by race, the numbers were far higher. For Black children, that number was 74%; for Hispanic children, that number was 79%; for Pacific islander, it was 78%; and for American Indian/Alaska native, it was 80%. This gap in education has had a tremendous economic impact on families, reverberating through generations. According to Georgetown’s 2015 study on the economics of college majors, a college graduate makes $1 …

Foreign Direct Investment And Wage Spillovers In The Indonesian Manufacturing Industry, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Miguel Angel Esquivias, Nur Arifin Jan 2022

Foreign Direct Investment And Wage Spillovers In The Indonesian Manufacturing Industry, Mohammad Zeqi Yasin, Miguel Angel Esquivias, Nur Arifin

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

We examine whether Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) influences wage spillover in the manufacturing sector in Indonesia from the perspective of three recipients (dimensions): industry, province, and technology intensity. Annual data of Indonesian manufacturing firms from 2011 to 2015 is employed. Using the Fixed Effect Model, we found the spatial (province) dimension to matter the most as it consistently indicates that inward FDI depresses wages in the recipient province. When we split the observation based on firm size, FDI inflows within the technology intensive subsectors were found to discourage wages. Only FDI inflows within the host industries support higher salaries for …

Womanunulat: Popular Critical Writing As Performance, Katrina Stuart Santiago

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This essay discusses the exclusionary principles of the literary establishment in the Philippines using the lens of labor, given critical writing as practice, and gender as performance. It maps out a personal and professional history of writing that is intricately tied to the various voices of other women writing, across different forms, and throughout Philippine history, where women have shown that at the heart of this practice, and at the core of this performance, is freedom.

Stephen Kellert in 2008 developed a list of biophilic attributes that was further refined in the Biophilic Interior Design Matrix (BID-M) to specifically support the interior application of biophilic design for health and well-being. The present study further investigates biophilic interior design using the BID-M language and the key interior design components colour, light, and materiality. The first part of the study reviewed four decades of literature related to biophilia and colour, light, and materiality to investigate a total of 19 publications. The second part of …

‘Sense Of Place’ On Sacred Cultural And Architectural Heritage: St. Peter’S Church Of Melaka, Azizi Bahauddin, Rani Prihatmanti, Sophie Asha Putri Jan 2022

‘Sense Of Place’ On Sacred Cultural And Architectural Heritage: St. Peter’S Church Of Melaka, Azizi Bahauddin, Rani Prihatmanti, Sophie Asha Putri

Interiority

The ‘sense of place’ of a religious building can be sacred for the community that frequents the architecture. It is deeply embedded with cultural attributes that made the architecture more meaningful and became a structure that ties the community. This article examines the St. Peter’s Church in Melaka which is seen as the epitome of the Portuguese community as a place for them to congregate. This study is influenced by Lefebvre’s space triad theory on the production of social space based on the ‘perceived,’ ‘conceived,’ and ‘lived’ space to form the interiority through sense of place. This qualitative research delves …

Arctic Conflicts & Russian Foreign Policy, Tania Röttger, Theocharis N. Grigoriadis

Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law

In this paper, we analyze the intersections of legal and political dispute resolution methods in Arctic territorial disputes involving Russia and several Western governments, including Canada and the United States. There are two current disputes. The first dispute concentrates on the Lomonosov Ridge, a geological feature that runs near the North Pole and has been used by three states to claim the North Pole as part of their continental shelf. The second dispute deals with the legal status of the Northern Sea Route. Our paper evaluates the tradeoffs between the legal and political constraints in these disputes between Russia and …

Bethancourt, Zane Swanson, Rosemary Nzunza, Amber Wutich, Alexandra Brewis, Sera Young, David Almeida, Matthew J. Douglass, Emmanuel K. Ndiema, David R. Braun, Herman Pontzer, Asher Y. Rosinger

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This article quantifies Daasanach water insecurity experiences in Northern Kenya, examines how water insecurity is associated with water borrowing and psychosocial stress, and evaluates if water borrowing mitigates the stress from water insecurity. Of 133 households interviewed in 7 communities, 95% were water insecure and 74.4% borrowed water three or more times in the prior month. Regression analyses demonstrate water borrowing frequency moderates the relationship between water insecurity and psychosocial stress. Only those who rarely or never borrowed water reported greater stress with higher water insecurity. The coping mechanism of water borrowing may help blunt water insecurity-related stress.

Fifty Shades Of Deservingness: An Analysis Of State-Level Variation And Effect Of Social Constructions On Policy Outcomes, Rebecca J. Kreitzer, Elizabeth A. Maltby, Candis Watts Smith

Political Science Faculty Research

A patchwork of policies exists across the United States. While citizens' policy preferences in domains such as the criminal legal system, gun regulations/rights, immigration, and welfare are informed by their political predispositions, they are also shaped by the extent to which policy targets are viewed as deserving. This article centres the idea that collective evaluations matter in policymaking, and it ascertains whether subnational levels of deservingness evaluations of several target groups differ across space to illuminate the link between these judgements and state policy design. We leverage original survey data and multilevel regression and poststratification to create state-level estimates of …
