Confederate Nitre Bureau Operations In Florida, Marion O. Smith
Confederate Nitre Bureau Operations In Florida, Marion O. Smith
Florida Historical Quarterly
Saltpeter or niter (potassium nitrate), the main ingredient of gunpowder, was essential for the Confederate war effort. To ensure a steady supply, in April 1862 the Confederate Congress passed a bill which created the Nitre Bureau. Its goals were to encourage a more “efficient working of the niter caves” already being mined, to solicit additional contracts for new cave operators or persons leaching earth deposits from underneath buildings, and to establish in the larger towns artificial niter beds. The new bureau was headed by Isaac M. St. John, a former civil engineer, and the South was soon divided into districts, …

Fontaneda Revisited: Five Descriptions Of Sixteenth-Century Florida, John E. Worth
Fontaneda Revisited: Five Descriptions Of Sixteenth-Century Florida, John E. Worth
Florida Historical Quarterly
The well-known relation of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, the Spanish sailor shipwrecked on the Florida coast in the mid sixteenth century, has correctly been described by David O. True as a document that “should share the top rank of Florida source records.“1 It constitutes one of the earliest descriptions of the Indians of Florida and is rich in ethnographic detail. Although the text of the body of Fontaneda’s account (the Memoir) and a separate fragment associated with it (the Memoranda) have been published by True in both transcribed and translated form, this published version came from Buckingham Smith’s transcription of …
Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.
Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Northern teachers in the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction have been the subject of various studies.1 This literature emphasizes the origins and development of the aid societies that sponsored the teachers, and it focuses upon major figures who shaped educational policy. At the same time, little attention details the activities of early northern teachers in Florida within the context of developments in other places. Florida’s experience varies from other parts of the South, and it offers, by contrast, a fresh perspective on the regional experience. Ansel Eddy Kinne’s career provides an opportunity for understanding aid societies. From early …

The Advance Of Florida's Frontier As Determined From Post Office Openings, Morton D. Winsberg
The Advance Of Florida's Frontier As Determined From Post Office Openings, Morton D. Winsberg
Florida Historical Quarterly
The geographical diffusion of human habitation throughout the United States has long interested social scientists. Unfortunately a paucity of detailed data has always hampered accurate cartographic representation of the advance of the frontier in the nation. Although the United States has conducted a decennial population census since 1790, meaningful cartographic displays of the advancing settlement frontier that might otherwise be derived from census data in the nineteenth century are obscured by changes in the number, area, and shape of counties. Florida provides an excellent example of such cartographic problems as well as one possible solution.
Southern Extremities: The Significance Of Fort Myers In The Civil War, Irvin D. Solomon
Southern Extremities: The Significance Of Fort Myers In The Civil War, Irvin D. Solomon
Florida Historical Quarterly
Although critical to American military operations in the Third Seminole War, Fort Myers would have probably faded into history after its abandonment in 1858 if not for the Civil War. Towards the end of that bloody conflict the post took on a new significance for both sides. Not only did the Union reactivate the fort in the very midst of a presumed Confederate stronghold, but it staffed the garrison with black troops— the ultimate insult to those Southerners who stubbornly remained true to the Stars and Bars. Consequently, the recommissioning of Fort Myers resulted in the largest military action of …

Establishing Transboundary Tourist Space In The Baltic Sea Region, Denis Cerić, Marek Wieckowski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

However, it severely suffered both during the Second World War and in its aftermath through to 1989. Since the mid-1990s, initiatives, programs and organisations promoting cooperation in this region have been put in place, and, in line with the expansion of the European Union, there have been far more opportunities (both organisational and financial) for cross-border cooperation, including in a transboundary context. Material and methods: The main sources of data for quantitative analysis have been official reports of Interreg …
