Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2021/2022, Singapore Management University
Report to Stakeholders
The title of the annual report, “Our Evolving Garden”, points to how the University continues to develop and progress as “One SMU”. With the world now learning to live with COVID-19 as endemic, the last year has been one in which SMU students have been able to resume many of the activities that contribute towards providing a transformative education. For example, they were able to attend many more events on campus and to travel overseas for internships, exchanges, and community service projects. Faculty too were able to attend academic conferences and meet with educational partners, business connections and research associates …
Electric Reliability, Distributed Energy Resources (Ders), And Opportunities For Customer-Sited Solar And Storage In Modern Electric Systems, Will Gorman
Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports
At the turn of the 21st century, the electricity system started to transform. Regulators opened up electric generation to competition and renewable electricity, particularly wind and solar, entered a period of rapid cost decline (Borenstein and Bushnell, 2015). At the same time the popularity of distributed, rather than centralized, supply of electricity grew, giving end consumers new options to meet their electricity demand locally. The dramatic cost decline of solar technologies made it more economic to install solar generators at individual households (Barbose et al., 2021a), and technological development of battery storage has led to even more options for the …

Impact Of Digital Twins And Metaverse On Cities: History, Current Situation, And Application Perspectives, Zhihan Lv, Wen Long Shang, Mohsen Guizani
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
To promote the expansion and adoption of Digital Twins (DTs) in Smart Cities (SCs), a detailed review of the impact of DTs and digitalization on cities is made to assess the progression of cities and standardization of their management mode. Combined with the technical elements of DTs, the coupling effect of DTs technology and urban construction and the internal logic of DTs technology embedded in urban construction are discussed. Relevant literature covering the full range of DTs technologies and their applications is collected, evaluated, and collated, relevant studies are concatenated, and relevant accepted conclusions are summarized by modules. First, the …

Faculty Perceptions Of The Essential Elements Of Leadership Across Generations And Sex, Seth D. Kastle Ed.D., Haley Moon, Jeni Mcray Ph.D.
Leadership Faculty Publications
This exploratory quantitative study, whose population consisted of full-time faculty at a Midwestern state university, measures perceptions of the degree of essentiality of ten elements of effective leadership, and whether or not those perceptions were significantly different across generational cohort (baby boomer, GenX, and millennial) and/or biological sex (male, female). Current literature on generational cohort/gender and perceptions of effective leadership is equivocal at best. This study attempted to fill gaps in existing literature, as applied to faculty in higher education contexts. The essential elements of leadership identified for this study were: influence, promoting teamwork, change facilitation, authority, collaborative dialogue, risk-taking, …

The Relationship Between Residential Land-Use Regulations And Regional Air Pollutants, Caren Royce Yap
The Relationship Between Residential Land-Use Regulations And Regional Air Pollutants, Caren Royce Yap
Student Research
As cities continue to grow at exponential rates, land use regulations, specifically density restrictions, have been implemented to mitigate economic effects, from increasing housing prices to difficult public transportation construction. These regulations range in type, taking into account factors regarding the most effective urban form for cities and recently the presence of COVID-19. Land use effects on housing prices are also adjacent to tackle the climate crisis. Two of the most common air pollutants, PM 2.5 and Ozone, are run in a comparative analysis to areas with varying measures of density restrictions to detect a possible association using multiple regression …

How A Book Changed A Nation [2022], Teodora Buzea
Master's Theses
“We don’t believe in vampires.”
I didn’t bother to turn away from the TV to look at my parents. On screen, a crew of young men were interviewing an old woman. She spoke only Romanian, and a too-perfect female voice spoke for her in English. I could see the confident fear in her expression as she exclaimed that vampires were indeed real and that she was always scared of them. She wasn’t alone. All of Transylvania were aware of the existence of vampires. Truly, these young men— ghost hunters and cryptologists—were right to come here to this haunted nation. The …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of N-Methylated H2r2w4, Talal Alrubaie
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are potential candidates for developing antibiotics against multidrug-resistant bacteria. We have recently developed a potent cyclic AMP containing histidine (H), arginine (R), and tryptophan (W) residues named [H2R2W4]. This peptide showed antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) with a minimum inhibitor concentration (MIC) of 3.1 μg/mL and a MIC of 6.2 μg/mL for Escherichia coli (E. coli). However, it displayed a mild cytotoxicity with cell viability of approximately 80% against normal human lung cells (MRC-5) and ~60% against normal human kidney cells (HEK-293) at the …

A Candle In The Labyrinth: A Guide For Immigration Attorneys To Assert Habeas Corpus After Dhs V. Thuraissigiam, Joshua J. Schroeder
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
In the summer of 2020, immigration law seemed to become the gravitational center of presidential power. After the Supreme Court decided several immigration cases in favor of the executive department, former President Trump cited “the DACA case” to support a new constitutional theory that “[t]he Supreme Court gave the president of the United States powers that nobody thought the president had.” Accordingly, Trump began to issue presidential legislation including “an immigration plan, a health care plan, and various other plans.”
Trump also began to occupy cities that were politically opposed to his presidency with ICE and CBP agents, including BORTAC …

Economic Freedom And Labor Market Outcomes Of Immigrants: Evidence From The Dominican Republic And Haiti, Sarah Carvalho, Kathleen Pinkston, Logan Tucker, Corey Denzel
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
When two people receive the same gift and person A initially had significantly less than person B, wouldn’t person A be able to utilize the gift more? Why then do immigrants from Haiti fare so poorly compared to those from the Dominican Republic when exposed to the economic freedom levels of the United States? Using data from the last 30 years, we will be using an OLS model to analyze the impact of economic freedom on the labor market outcomes of immigrants from Haiti compared to those from the Dominican Republic. In this OLS model, we will take into account …

Won't You Be My Senator?: Nuanced “Friends And Neighbors” Voting In U.S. Senate Elections, 1968–2018, Charles R. Hunt
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent experimental scholarship shows that local “place identity” continues to matter to voters' assessments of candidates, echoing early findings by Key (1949) and others demonstrating electoral boosts in candidates’ home areas. But it is yet to reexamine these “friends-and-neighbors” effects in the observational context, nor does it parse differences between effects of local candidate roots and current candidate residency. This paper closes these gaps using an original county-level dataset of incumbent reelection races for the U.S. Senate from 1968 to 2018 (N = ∼34,000 county-years). I show that the friends-and-neighbors effect is more nuanced than previously thought, applying to candidate …

Biology, Monitoring, Sampling, And Management Of Rice Billbug, Sphenophorus Pertinax, In Furrow-Irrigated Rice, Chase Alan Floyd
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Furrow-irrigated rice hectares have increased annually for the last five years in the predominant long-grain rice producing states. Initial implementation of the system began in the 1980’s, but lack of rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea, Hebert) resistant cultivars made the system a nonviable option for rice producers. Hybridization of rice cultivars with less susceptibility has begun to increase the interest of producers to implement a furrow-irrigated rice production system due to the cost saving opportunities that it may provide. Elimination of the flood from large sections of the rice fields in a furrow-irrigated system alters management strategies and pest complexes compared …
Flood Hazard And Risk Analyses In The Republic Of Panama: A Case Study From The Juan Diaz River Watershed In Panama City, Virgilio De Jesus Quintero
Flood Hazard And Risk Analyses In The Republic Of Panama: A Case Study From The Juan Diaz River Watershed In Panama City, Virgilio De Jesus Quintero
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Flooding is the natural hazard with most occurrences in Panama. Its frequency and magnitude have increased over the years. This dissertation analyzes Panama’s flood activity in order to better understand flood hazards, the current evolution of Panamanian perceptions of flood risk, and the incorporation of indigenous knowledge used to mitigate flood hazards. The first chapter developed a baseline of past and current flood inventory in Panama, which required the use of flood historical data, thematic cartography, and Geographic Information Science (GIS). This chapter shows Panama has experienced floods in varying degrees. Through the spatial and temporal distribution of floods from …
Triumph In The Suburbs: Richard Ford And The Spaces Of New Capitalism, John Gorton
Triumph In The Suburbs: Richard Ford And The Spaces Of New Capitalism, John Gorton
All Theses
In his 1986 book America, Baudrillard noted that “the most banal suburb…is more at the centre of the world than any of the cultural manifestations of old Europe.” My thesis argues that this monumental shift from the suburbs as enclaves at the outer edges of cultural urban centers to “the centre of the world” is at the heart of Richard Ford’s realist project in his Pulitzer Prize winning Bascombe series starting with The Sportswriter in 1986. Emergent twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature scholars have been interested in the schism between the fictionalized representation and the lived experience of suburbia — while …

Data Discovery Analysis On Complex Time Series Data, Peter Lawrence Severynen
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Complex time series are a ubiquitous form of data in the modern world. They have wide application across many different fields of scientific inquiry and business endeavor. Time series are used to understand and forecast weather patterns, voting patterns, computer network traffic, population health outcomes, demographic changes, the results of scientific experiments, and the performance of stocks and mutual funds. But time series can be difficult to analyze by conventional methods when the data is multivariate, incomplete, or in different formats. To address these issues, an investigation of several multivariate time series datasets was performed using the methods of automatic …

Human Trafficking: Physical And Non-Physical Force Factors And Their Links To Victim Industry, Mary Caroline Kerr
Human Trafficking: Physical And Non-Physical Force Factors And Their Links To Victim Industry, Mary Caroline Kerr
Sociology and Criminology Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper examines the occurrence of different types of physical and non-physical force factors with two distinct human trafficking industries: sex trafficking and labor trafficking. This research’s main goal is to identify if there are specific uses of force that are more likely to be used in either sex or labor trafficking. The Human Trafficking Study, a database housed at the University of Arkansas, is used as a sample for this study. Two-sided, two sample proportion tests were conducted to establish if there is a statistical significance between the amount of physical force used in sex trafficking and the amount …

Foreign Judgments And Foreign Arbitral Awards Enforceability As A Factor And A Guarantee For Foreign Investments: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Rashed Mohammed Arhama Alshamsi
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
Foreign investments are considered an efficient and effective instrument to diversify and strengthen the economy; foreign investors generally need guarantees before entering a new market. One of these guarantees is a stable, transparent, predictable legal and judicial system. Such a system must be open to foreign laws and judgments as well as foreign arbitral awards, and it must also be flexible to increase foreign investments. Saudi Arabia has tried since the 50s’ to be more attractive to foreign investors and investments by enacting legislation and creating a modern court system to diversify their economy. However, the discretion of Saudi judges …

The Production And Destiny Of Public Space In An American City: Examining The Emergence And Disruption Of Brooklyn City Hall Square, Jason Montgomery
The Production And Destiny Of Public Space In An American City: Examining The Emergence And Disruption Of Brooklyn City Hall Square, Jason Montgomery
Publications and Research
Urban form should reflect collective value for place in communities. Urban squares in particular have the potential to serve as the nucleus of communities, urban artefacts that link place to memory and heritage while serving basic needs for everyday life in the city. Civic squares, those linked to governmental institutions, have further potential to facilitate community gatherings for memorialisation, commemoration, celebration and political action. Despite these important functions and potential, the incremental planning of Brooklyn in the early nineteenth century placed little emphasis on squares of any kind, despite the community’s expressed desires. Brooklyn’s first civic square, here referred to …

AfriArch is an archaeological and paleoenvironmental data community designed to integrate datasets related to human-environmental interactions in Holocene Africa. Here we present a dataset of bioarchaeological stable isotope (C/N/O) and radiocarbon measurements from African archaeological sites spanning the Holocene. Modern measurements, when reported together with archaeological data in original publications, are also included. The dataset consists of 5568 entries and covers the entirety of Africa, though most isotopic research has been concentrated in southern Africa. The AfriArch isotopic dataset can be used in paleodietary, paleodemography, paleoclimatic, and paleoenvironmental studies. It can also be employed to highlight data gaps across space …
Essential Property, Timothy M. Mulvaney, Joseph William Singer
Essential Property, Timothy M. Mulvaney, Joseph William Singer
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
For a sizable swath of the U.S. population, incomes and wealth are insufficient to cover life’s most basic necessities even in the most ordinary of times. A disturbingly resilient explanation for this state of affairs rests on the view that resource inequities are avoidable through self-reliance, a stance that invites observers to see people in poverty as morally suspect. This Article advances a counterview in contending that the widespread lack of essential resources did not simply arise naturally via individuals’ life choices but instead has been, in very meaningful part, created and perpetuated by our system of property laws. The …
