School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Samples of fresh snow (n = 34) have been collected from 29 locations in various urban and remote regions of northern Iran following a period of sustained snowfall and the thawed contents examined for microplastics (MPs) according to established techniques. MP concentrations ranged from undetected to 86 MP L−1 (mean and median concentrations ~20 MP and 12 MP L−1, respectively) and there was no significant difference in MP concentration between sample location type or between different depths of snow (or time of deposition) sampled at selected sites. Fibres were the dominant shape of MP and μ-Raman spectroscopy of selected samples …

Investing In Human Futures: How Big Tech And Social Media Giants Abuse Privacy And Manipulate Consumerism, Brett Dembrow May 2022

Investing In Human Futures: How Big Tech And Social Media Giants Abuse Privacy And Manipulate Consumerism, Brett Dembrow

University of Miami Business Law Review

Social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram originated with one seemingly innocent goal: “to bring the world closer together.”1 Now, these Big Tech giants own and operate some of the most powerful platforms in the world simply because of their unethical yet effective strategies to maintain their users’ attention. Social media companies have monetized the amount of time their users spend on their platforms by honing in on the individual preferences of each user and selling that access to advertisers. This heightened access to potential consumers and their preferences has become the most valuable marketing tool for digital …

Researchers and practitioners often exist symbiotically, but this relationship does not always benefit both parties. We here discuss a mutualistic research symbiosis that our organizations have developed over the last decade, the challenges which we have experienced as part of this process, and how our experiences may help others intending to develop such mutualisms. The defining characteristic of our model is that conservation implementers, not investigators, lead the research. This power balance has promoted synergies between researchers and practitioners and has resulted in one of the first ever Randomized Control Trials of a conservation intervention. We have shortened the distance …

The Belt And Road Initiative In Kenya, As Represented By The Standard Gauge Railway (Sgr), Its Effects And The Response Of Kenyans To It., Kiplangat Arap Yegon

Master's Theses

China has sought to strengthen ties with many countries in the Global South, and many African countries have signed Memorandum of Agreements(MoU) with China leading to trade treaties, foreign direct investments, loans and grants flowing into the African continent from China. This aggressive push by China into Africa has come under intense scrutiny with different actors, scholars and powers having mixed takes on the move. In my thesis, I look at the ways in which China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been undertaken in Africa. I use Kenya as a main case study in looking at the ways in which …

Echoed Sites And The Unknowable Object, Joseph Canizales May 2022

Echoed Sites And The Unknowable Object, Joseph Canizales

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis will discuss the expanded field of sculpture, simulacra, digital technology, and two terms I’ve devised: the unknowable object, and echoed sites. Within these two terms, I’m concerned with the complicated relationship between humans and geology and how we extract material from the ground without reflecting on the geologic history of the site. In echoed sites I create sculptures with and without a geologic site or object, by way of digital technology. These forms display two states paradoxically in balance, where what’s presented leaves more questions than answers. Thus, as part of echoed sites, exists the unknowable object. …

Disorientations, Noah Greene-Lowe May 2022

Disorientations, Noah Greene-Lowe

MFA in Visual Art

The materials that make up the ordinary and mundane in the United States also reinforce and normalize a white spatial imaginary. Conventions of mapping, imaging of land and landscape, and elements of the built environment continue to orient us in a logic of space as property. In my sculptural work, I employ strategies of disorientation and creative repair, or reconstruction, to unsettle the spatial practices of whiteness and structures of power embedded in the mundane, the familiar, and the domestic. I consider the planned cohousing community where I grew up as an influence on my work, and my whiteness. By …

The Status Of Utah Black Women, Tasha Toy, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen May 2022

The Status Of Utah Black Women, Tasha Toy, Marin Christensen, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Utah is becoming increasingly diverse, and this has brought wide disparities between most minority groups and the White population in terms of education, housing, and health outcomes.1 Last year, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah released a report on race, ethnicity, and sex that started the conversation more broadly, and now the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) is expanding and deepening this discussion by focusing a series of research snapshots on Utah women of color. As the UWLP focuses on strengthening the impact of all Utah girls and women, research that increases our …

Character Traits Strategic Leaders Need, Tami Davis Biddle May 2022

Character Traits Strategic Leaders Need, Tami Davis Biddle

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Strategic leaders must possess a range of skills to work successfully in complex environments. To use those skills to best effect, they rely on character traits that enhance the likelihood of their effectiveness as leaders and maximize their success when working in teams. Certain elements of character facilitate work in demanding settings that rely heavily on communication, integration, and cooperation. Programs designed to educate senior leaders must help future national security professionals identify these traits and then practice and hone them. Highlighting individuals with challenging roles in World War II, this essay analyzes the qualities of character that enabled them …

Strengthen Arctic Governance To Stop Russian And Chinese Overreach, Mark T. Vicik May 2022

Strengthen Arctic Governance To Stop Russian And Chinese Overreach, Mark T. Vicik

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues shortfalls in the international institutions governing the Arctic have allowed Russia and China to expand control over the region. It provides an overview of regional governance and power dynamics, outlines a three-part approach to correcting deficiencies, highlights attempts by Russia and China to circumvent international governance, examines how the Arctic’s governing institutions address Russian and Chinese growth in the region, and focuses on the institutional failures that have allowed Russia and China to expand—failures academic scholarship and US policy have not adequately addressed. Practitioners will find specific steps for rectifying issues with Arctic institutions to support the …

Precise Elevation Thresholds Associated With Salt Marsh–Upland Ecotones Along The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Carlton P. Anderson, Gregory A. Carter, Margaret C.B. Waldron May 2022

Precise Elevation Thresholds Associated With Salt Marsh–Upland Ecotones Along The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Carlton P. Anderson, Gregory A. Carter, Margaret C.B. Waldron

Faculty Publications

Coastal marshes provide essential ecosystem services related to biodiversity, water quality, and protection from erosion. As increasing rates of relative sea-level rise affect many coastal marsh systems, a thorough understanding of marsh responses to sea-level change, particularly the migration of marsh–upland boundaries, becomes essential. The goal of this study was to determine precise elevation thresholds associated with coastal marsh, the marsh–upland ecotone, and upland plant communities along Mississippi’s Gulf of Mexico coast (diurnal, microtidal). Elevations (NAVD88) were measured using survey-grade Global Navigation Satellite System solutions integrated with high-precision leveling. Plant species were sampled at approximately 1-m intervals along each of …

Defining And Deterring Faits Accomplis, Brandon Colas May 2022

Defining And Deterring Faits Accomplis, Brandon Colas

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article describes faits accomplis—how states attempt to seize disputed territory using military force, hoping to avoid war in the process—and offers suggestions for how to deter them. Since 1945, faits accomplis have become the most common means by which states attempt to take over territory, even though they frequently result in armed conflict. US deterrent efforts, however, often focus on stopping invasions, not limited land grabs. This study combines the traditional literature on deterrence with Dan Altman’s recent research on faits accomplis to suggest Department of Defense leaders should frame territorial disputes as a real estate market they can …

Dysfunctional Warfare: The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Rob Johnson May 2022

Dysfunctional Warfare: The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Rob Johnson

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was based on false premises, faulty assumptions, and a weak strategy. As the conflict has unfolded, heavy losses have imposed a strain on available Russian manpower. The Russian army reached a culminating point outside Kyiv and has exhibited little sign of operational learning. By contrast, Ukrainians have fought an existential war, making good use of dispersed light infantry tactics with high motivation levels. Western support has allowed them to compensate for their deficiencies in armaments and munitions. This commentary also shows military and policy leaders how the political context continues to impose limitations on the Ukrainians.

Modelling And Solving The Split-Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem, Considering Loading Constraints And Spoilage Of Commodities, Sherif A. Fahmy, Mohamed L. Gaafar May 2022

Modelling And Solving The Split-Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem, Considering Loading Constraints And Spoilage Of Commodities, Sherif A. Fahmy, Mohamed L. Gaafar

Faculty Journal Articles

In a typical supply chain, an aggregation hub is a strategically located facility that collects, processes and distributes commodities. This requires determining the collection/distribution fleet size, and the shortest routes to/from the served locations. Perishable commodities further require considering the order of collection/delivery and the loading positions inside the trucks. In this paper, the split-delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP) is modelled and solved, considering multiple perishable commodities, loading constraints, cross-docking and a heterogeneous fleet of trucks. The objective is to manage a fleet of trucks operating from an aggregation hub in order to minimise the total transportation and products spoilage …

Patent Performativity, Dan L. Burk May 2022

Patent Performativity, Dan L. Burk

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

Gender bias is rife in the patent system; a large and growing body of empirical literature demonstrates the exclusion of women from the patent system at every level. Such pervasive marginalization cannot be explained by the paucity of women in STEM fields. Rather, more fundamental discriminatory mechanisms must be at work. In this paper I examine one aspect of such biases, arguing that patents operate as performatives, that is, as social assemblages that enact what they disclose, and that create their own social facts. To demonstrate patent performativity, I briefly trace the development of performative concepts, from Austinian declarations, through …

Health Communication Blindspot: A Case Study Of Harmful Algal Blooms In The South Atlantic States, Jaron King May 2022

Health Communication Blindspot: A Case Study Of Harmful Algal Blooms In The South Atlantic States, Jaron King

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

A Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) is a complex natural event that occurs when algae reach a critical biomass and create one or more toxins harmful to biological life or the environment. By definition, HABs create both ecological and public health challenges. Because governments are the entities most often tasked with the responsibility for shared resources, this case study represents a snapshot of current governmental messaging about HABs in the South Atlantic states. The objective of this online content analysis is to determine the readability of both state and federal government online communications regarding HABs using the Simple Measures of Gobbledygook …

Viado, Margaret A. Carson, Louisa Schandera, R. Heath Kelsey, Dwayne E. Porter, Daniela B. Friedman

Journal of South Carolina Water Resources

Effective research translation and science communication are necessary for successful implementation of water resources management initiatives. This entails active involvement of stakeholders through collaborative partnerships and knowledge-sharing practices. To follow up a recent study with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)–funded Center for Oceans and Human Health and Climate Change Interactions (OHHC2I) project investigators, the center’s Community Engagement Core (CEC) documented center partners’ science communication practices and needs to inform a collaborative training and improve investigator-partner bidirectional communication. Thirteen (13) individuals participated in 10 semi-structured qualitative interviews focused on their research translation needs, science communication and dissemination tactics, …
