The Devadasi System: An Exploitation Of Women And Children In The Name Of God And Culture, Tameshnie Deane
The Devadasi System: An Exploitation Of Women And Children In The Name Of God And Culture, Tameshnie Deane
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article looks at an ancient tradition of India called devadasis, which literally means “servant of God”. It requires girls as young as four years to be ‘married’ or ‘dedicated’ to a temple deity. Once a revered practice, over time the traditions evolved allowing women and children to become sexually exploited in the name of God. Looking at the reasons for the difficulty in combating this issue, this paper will first analyse its practices through a historical lense. Secondly, the extent of this exploitative practice will be discussed, and a major objective will be to explore the cultural underpinnings of …

Gender Perspective On Tourism's Influence On The Local Community: A Literature Review, Nur Abellan Calvet, Jordi Arcos-Pumarola, Laia Encinar-Prat
Journal of International Women's Studies
The tourism industry integrates multiple actors interrelated through a variety of dynamics and characteristics. To address this complexity, tourism studies integrate different disciplines and perspectives in order to comprehend the tourism phenomenon. One of the main topics of tourism studies has been its impact on local communities. The conjunction of these research lines with the gender perspective discloses how tourism interrelates with the host territory's particular gender dynamics. In this context, the present study aims to explore and analyse the current state of academic research on tourism's influence on the local community from a gender perspective. In this way, we …
The Impacts Of The Uk Wine Industry On People, Place And Climate, Claire Lyons
The Impacts Of The Uk Wine Industry On People, Place And Climate, Claire Lyons
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Climate change has moved the boundary at which viniviticulture is possible to above 49.9N+ degrees above latitude, in the UK this has made commercial wine production both possible and profitable. This has triggered a movement in land-use, as vineyards increasingly replace other arable land in England and Wales; a movement of people, as wealthy business professionals return to the land to establish vineyards; and a movement on menus, as English and Welsh wine is stocked at establishments from Weatherspoon’s to The Fat Duck. Concurrently, climate change is severely disrupting agricultural production and livelihoods, prompting passionate calls for a far reaching …
Cé A Bhog Mo Cháis? The Celtic Origins Of Early Irish Cheese-Making, Anthony F. Buccini
Cé A Bhog Mo Cháis? The Celtic Origins Of Early Irish Cheese-Making, Anthony F. Buccini
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Irish cheese-making has a remarkable history. Before the current renaissance and the preceding disruption of tradition in the context of British imperialism and Atlantic World trade lay a long period during which Ireland possessed an exceptionally complex culture of dairy production which included multiple distinct cheese-types, as demonstrated by Ó Sé (1948) in his seminal article on the subject. The generic word for ‘cheese’ in Irish, cáis, so used already in Middle Irish, is derived from Latin caseus and this borrowing occurs also in Brittonic Celtic (Welsh caws) and all the West-Germanic languages (English cheese, Dutch kaas). There is strong evidence …
The Irreplaceable Frying Pan And The Green-Eyed Tiger: Emotional Transnationalism And The Moving Foodways Of Migrants In Montreal, Amanda Whittaker
The Irreplaceable Frying Pan And The Green-Eyed Tiger: Emotional Transnationalism And The Moving Foodways Of Migrants In Montreal, Amanda Whittaker
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
“Moi, j’suis pas cocorico, j’suis pas fier d’être Français,” Florence, a migrant from France, declared that she does not carry an undying love for her home country. For her, transnational migration is tied to an emotional connection to those who still live France and is bound by her family in Montreal (QC, Canada); it is not restricted by borders or nations, but instead the place where she rests her hat, her conception of ‘home.’ Using oral history interviews, this paper investigates the intersection between emotion, identity, and foodways. The project is a study of métissage that explores the cultural negotiations, …
Back To The Future: The Artisan Food Producer In Ireland’S Food Tourism Proposition, Rebecca O'Flynn
Back To The Future: The Artisan Food Producer In Ireland’S Food Tourism Proposition, Rebecca O'Flynn
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Artisan food producers are arguably more than the sum of their parts when it comes to the important role they play within Ireland’s food in tourism landscape.
On the one hand, both food and tourism as well as the artisan economy are forecasted to grow globally (Yeoman and McMahon-Beatte 2016, 95; Avent 2018; Polites 2020), suggesting that there is a significant role for artisan producers to play in food tourism in Ireland, compounded by a developing interest in local and sustainable food (Sage 2010). On the other, artisan food producers are both purveyors and preservers of food culture, heritage and …
Mobile Grounds: From Ambulant Café To Take Away Coffee, Nihal Bursa
Mobile Grounds: From Ambulant Café To Take Away Coffee, Nihal Bursa
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Humans’ desire to drink coffee several times a day as part of their everyday routine brought about the development of various ways to prepare and consume coffee on the move. Since coffee drinking has become an addiction, makeshift coffee corners and ambulant coffee sellers have provided fresh coffee at temporary spots in cities in addition to coffee houses; later, take away coffee in disposable cups has become another way to enjoy a cup of coffee. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between manners, tendencies of consuming coffee on the move and related material culture in the Turkish context. For …
Uyghur Cuisine And Identity: An Historical Overview Of A Discreet Diaspora, G. Randall Mcnamara
Uyghur Cuisine And Identity: An Historical Overview Of A Discreet Diaspora, G. Randall Mcnamara
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This work reviews aspects of the disappearing Uyghur foodways since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 due to migrations, modernization, and now, cultural genocide. Turkic interconnections of culture, trade, and resettlement through the centuries mesh tightly with the Symposium theme of food and movement. The article holds no pretense to exhaustively catalog Uyghur foods or dishes as they can vary greatly within China and even more so throughout the Uyghur communities abroad. The author spent countless time cooking in kitchens and courtyards along the Silk Road in Central Asia and much of the information in the …
Irish Farmhouse Cheese: A New Food Tradition Born Of Many Movements, Molly Garvey
Irish Farmhouse Cheese: A New Food Tradition Born Of Many Movements, Molly Garvey
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Irish Farmhouse cheeses first appeared in the late 1970s, initially through restaurants and local shops (Milleens 2022, CAIS 2022). The growth of the number of farmhouse cheesemakers in Ireland from then until now, almost 50 fifty years later, results from movements of people, ideas, tastes and markets.
This paper explores what movements shaped Irish farmhouse cheeses and what motivated farmhouse cheesemakers in Ireland to start and to sustain a business. Through a case study, it is learnt that EU accession is core to the development of Irish farmhouse cheeses and that their makers are diverse in motivation, as well as …
Preserving Irish Smoked Salmon: Food Producers, Cultural Heritage, And Environmental Conservation, Malia Guyer-Stevens
Preserving Irish Smoked Salmon: Food Producers, Cultural Heritage, And Environmental Conservation, Malia Guyer-Stevens
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This research argues that the bottom-up heritagization of smoked salmon by Irish smoked salmon producers is an integral piece in the movement to protect wild Atlantic salmon in Irish waters. Wild Atlantic salmon in Ireland have transformed over the centuries from mythological figure to luxury export, and today into national food heritage thanks to the efforts of smoked salmon producers. This designation transforms Irish salmon from a wild animal into a symbol of Ireland’s historic ties to their coastal regions, an embodiment of traditional food practices, and projects the fish’s importance into the future. However, wild Irish salmon face extinction …

Entrepreneurship And Heterogeneity Among Firms' Strategies: Three Essays, Xi Zhang
Entrepreneurship And Heterogeneity Among Firms' Strategies: Three Essays, Xi Zhang
Dissertations
The first essay of this dissertation focuses on the entrepreneurship survival in the early stage, during which time an entrepreneur plays the game at the "edge of chaos" and improvises in real-time to learn the strategic playing field. It examines the social networks of entrepreneurs and the impact on new venture survival. Specifically, it explores how the entrepreneurs' social connections with other entrepreneurs and their types of employment differentially affect survival during the different stages of the entrepreneurial journey in the United States and India. Using the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) dataset, this study documents not only how the social …
Instances Of Queerness In The Philippines: An Exploration Of The Production Of Gender In The Online And Offline Spaces Of Queer Filipinos, Mark Remington Tan
Instances Of Queerness In The Philippines: An Exploration Of The Production Of Gender In The Online And Offline Spaces Of Queer Filipinos, Mark Remington Tan
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Society is generally heteronormative as some identities are held in higher regard than certain identities that can be described as queer. In spaces where heteronormativity prevails, there is a normalized repression of persons and actions that are perceived as queer. Heteronormativity is dependent upon an understanding of gender as real. However, as queer theorists posit, gender is a production. This production has historically taken place in offline space, but with the emergence of new technologies, it has extended into the realm of online space. This study explores how gender has been produced between online and offline spaces. It utilizes an …
Discrimination On Wheels: How Big Data Uses License Plate Surveillance To Put The Brakes On Disadvantaged Drivers, Nicole K. Mcconlogue
Discrimination On Wheels: How Big Data Uses License Plate Surveillance To Put The Brakes On Disadvantaged Drivers, Nicole K. Mcconlogue
Law Faculty Scholarship
As scholarly discourse increasingly raises concerns about the negative societal effects of “fintech,” “dirty data,” and “technochauvinism,” a growing technology provides an instructive illustration of all three of these problems. Surveillance software companies are using automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology to develop predictive analytical tools. In turn, software companies market those tools to auto financers and insurers as a risk assessment input to evaluate consumers seeking to buy a car. Proponents of this technology might argue that more information about consumer travel habits will result in more accurate and individualized risk predictions, potentially increasing vehicle ownership among marginalized groups. …
Resistance In The Bluegrass, Farrah Alexander
Resistance In The Bluegrass, Farrah Alexander
Civil Rights
From the anti-segregation sit-ins of the 1960s to the 2020 protests in response to the killing of Breonna Taylor, the rest of the nation—and often the world—has watched as Kentuckians boldly fought against injustice. In Resistance in the Bluegrass, Farrah Alexander outlines how Kentucky's activists have opposed racism, discrimination, economic inequality, and practices that accelerate climate change; advocated for better education, more humane immigration policies, and appropriate political representation; and supported LGBTQ+ and women's rights, while also celebrating decades of Kentucky contributions to social justice movements and the people behind them.
Resistance in the Bluegrass gives engaged citizens—and those …
Design Of Self-Assembled Peptides For Wound Healing, Ka-Kyung Kim
Design Of Self-Assembled Peptides For Wound Healing, Ka-Kyung Kim
Dissertations
According to the CDC, 15% of diabetic patients develop diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and approximately 170,000 patients undergo non-traumatic amputation annually. DFU is a major complication of diabetes caused by non-healing full-thickness wounds through the dermis. The current treatments include blood sugar control, frequent debridement, offloading, moist wound care, infection treatment, and amputation. To achieve wound closure of DFU, appropriate wound care and antibiotic therapy are essential. Topical regimens include hydrocolloids, alginates, foam, silver-impregnated dressings, and hydrogels. Wound healing is a complex and dynamic interplay between the immune system, keratinocytes, and dermal cells (in case of cutaneous wound). Angiogenesis has …
Inalienable Properties: The Political Economy Of Indigenous Land Reform By Jamie Baxter, Liam Carson
Inalienable Properties: The Political Economy Of Indigenous Land Reform By Jamie Baxter, Liam Carson
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In June of 2021, the federal government passed legislation that affirmed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and began the process of formalizing its provisions in Canadian law. Among other things, UNDRIP states that Indigenous peoples have rights of self-government and rights of ownership, use, and development of traditionally-held lands and resources.

Actions Against Racism: Bringing Together Trauma-Informed Practices, Social-Emotional Learning, And Racial Socialization To Combat Racism In Schools, Danielle R Hatchimonji, Kira Branch, Danika Perry, Tia N Barnes
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Racism is a social determinant of health with dire consequences for the health, education, and mental health of students of color. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop and test evidence-based strategies to combat racism in schools. In response to this need, our team has developed a multi-tiered school-based intervention to build capacity for combatting racism in educators, students, and families. The "Actions Against Racism" intervention synthesizes three evidence-based practices: trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning (SEL), and racial socialization. The multiple tiers of intervention aim to cultivate skills for combatting individual and structural racism in educators, families, and students across …

Rethinking Italy’S Margins Through Walking: Mobility, Activism And Positionality In Wu Ming 2’S Il Sentiero Luminoso (2016) And Giuliano Santoro’S Su Due Piedi (2012), Simone Brioni Dr.
Department of English Faculty Publications
The article argues that Wu Ming 2’s Il sentiero luminoso (2016) and Giuliano Santoro’s Su due piedi. Camminando per un mese attraverso la Calabria (2012) describe walking as an activity which allows one to recognize the social modifications of space, and to rethink the geographies of suburban areas in Italy. This analysis resounds with Robert P. Marzec’s invitation to study how literature has represented the privatization and the capitalist and neoliberal organization of space, revealing forms of internal colonization which epitomize a pillar of colonial ideology. Il sentiero luminoso and Su due piedi reconfigure walking as an epistemological, ecocritical …

The Influence Of Intrapersonal Constraints On Travel Intention Of People At High Risk From Covid-19 During The New Normal, Dyah Widiyastuti, Ikasari Kusuma Wardhani
Kesmas
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism constraints have created a challenge for inclusive tourism, especially for older people and people with comorbidities. This study examined intrapersonal constraints’ effect on the travel intentions of people facing fewer opportunities for tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which could disrupt their well-being fulfillment. The data were collected through an online survey of Jakarta citizens aged 46 years and older from the end of June to September 2021, and a total of 337 responses were accumulated. This study applied partial least square structural equation modeling to test the moderating effect of intrapersonal constraints toward …

Educational Data Mining For Predicting University Students' Performance, To Enhance University Admission Criteria, Youssef Amr Naga
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to propose and evaluate possible predictors of success for incoming university students to the American University in Cairo (AUC) who wish to enroll in its engineering programs, by considering their overall grade point average (GPA) at graduation as the measure of their success (output variable). This study is composed of two phases. First, available university admission variables; i.e., gender, high school diploma, high school score, and proficiency level in the English language (the language of instruction at AUC) at the time of application are evaluated as a predictor of students’ performance using five different data mining techniques. …
