A False Sense Of Security — Organizations Need A Paradigm Shift On Protecting Themselves Against Apts, Srinivasulu R. Vuggumudi, Yong Wang, Jun Liu, Cherie Noteboom, Kaushik Ragothaman
A False Sense Of Security — Organizations Need A Paradigm Shift On Protecting Themselves Against Apts, Srinivasulu R. Vuggumudi, Yong Wang, Jun Liu, Cherie Noteboom, Kaushik Ragothaman
Research & Publications
Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are among the most complex cyberattacks and are generally executed by cyber-attackers linked to nation-states. An organization may have security strategies to prevent APTs. However, a false sense of security may exist when the focus is on implementing security strategies but not on the effectiveness of implemented security strategies. This research aims to find out 1) if organizations are in a false sense of security while preventing APT attacks, 2) what factors influence the false sense of security, and 3) whether organizational culture influence factors contributing to the false sense of security. A theoretical model is …
"The Right To Be Forgotten" And Its Unintended Consequences To Intelligence Gathering, Charlene C. Goldfield
"The Right To Be Forgotten" And Its Unintended Consequences To Intelligence Gathering, Charlene C. Goldfield
Florida Journal of International Law
Social media has dramatically changed how we interact and communicate with one another. The reliance on social media has also sparked many international debates revolving around privacy. We have seen the enactment of the comprehensive privacy law in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in the United States—both enacted in 2018. In the GDPR, Article 17, known as the "Right to Be Forgotten" (RTBF) principle, allows, for data subjects to request that their information be removed from online service providers like social media companies. In recent years, cases from the …
Defending Taiwan: Collective Self-Defense Of A Contested State, Ryan M. Fisher
Defending Taiwan: Collective Self-Defense Of A Contested State, Ryan M. Fisher
Florida Journal of International Law
China's bold threats of war against Taiwan draw increasing attention to the unsettled nature of Taiwan's status in international law. Although Taiwan exhibits many, if not all, of the characteristics of recognized states, it has failed to gain widespread state recognition in the international community. Without statehood, the security of Taiwan faces considerable risk because its right to self-defense under international law is contested. Highlighting this legal ambiguity, the People's Republic of China (P.R.C.) declares that Taiwan must be reunited with Mainland China—even if it requires the use of force. This Article develops the historical and legal relationship between Taiwan …

New Deal Public Works In The Florida Panhandle, 1933-1940, Robert Krause
New Deal Public Works In The Florida Panhandle, 1933-1940, Robert Krause
Florida Historical Quarterly
The 1930s represented a time of profound change in the South as it did across the nation. An examination of New Deal agencies and their public works in the Florida Panhandle highlights the dynamic character of federal projects and their impact upon human and natural landscapes. Federal aid in the form of public works projects in the sixteen western panhandle counties created a visibly-new world for residents. 1 The construction of roads and towns in previously-raw coastal timberlands led to a transformation of place and the emergence of not only new commercial and recreational spaces, but the development of a …

When The Lion Learns To Write: A Counterstory About A Doctoral Student's Qualitative Research Project, Martín Alberto Gonzalez
Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay utilizes critical race theory composite counterstorytelling to tell a story about Alberto, a first-generation Xicano doctoral student who is presenting his dissertation research proposal to his qualitative research class. Through Alberto’s character, I discuss my complicated process of designing and conducting a research study. Specifically, I reflect on why I decided to study the experiences of Mexican, Mexican American, and Xicanx students in higher education, why I used critical race theory, Latinx/a/o critical race theory, and critical race spatial analysis as theoretical frameworks, why I utilized critical collaborative ethnography as my research approach, and why I chose counterstorytelling …
Reforming Local Property For An Era Of National Decline, Daniel B. Rosenbaum
Reforming Local Property For An Era Of National Decline, Daniel B. Rosenbaum
Buffalo Law Review
Following a century of rapid growth, the global human population is predicted to crest and then decline in the coming generations. Some industrialized countries are already grappling with the economic and societal consequences of population loss. Others, including the United States, have only started to realize that decline might arrive on their doorsteps far sooner than originally anticipated, a prospect for which policymakers and legal scholars are presently unprepared.
Global and national demographic change threaten to cause far-reaching dislocations, and local municipalities, too, will be asked to reckon with the aftermath. Yet local governance in the United States has long …

Local And State Climate Initiatives In Louisiana Since 2005: Content And Thematic Analyses, Jessie F. Parrott
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana is uniquely exposed to severe weather because of its geography and climate. Louisiana’s extreme weather is exacerbated by anthropogenic climate change, which will worsen in the future. The risks its population and environment are exposed to has generated several policies and planning documents, nine of which are analyzed in this thesis. Three plans are from the state level, three are from the parish level, and three are from the urban (New Orleans) level. These planning documents pose various adaptation and mitigation actions to ameliorate and address multiple climate issues. These actions utilize specific mitigation strategies. The content and thematic …

Reference Database Of Teeth Images From The Family Bovidae, Juliet K. Brophy, Gregory J. Matthews
Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Researchers typically rely on fossils from the Family Bovidae to generate African paleoenvironmental reconstructions due to their strict ecological tendencies. Bovids have dominated the southern African fauna for the past four million years and, therefore, dominate the fossil faunal assemblages, especially isolated teeth. Traditionally, researchers reference modern and fossil comparative collections to identify teeth. However, researchers are limited by the specific type and number of bovids at each institution. B.O.V.I.D. (Bovidae Occlusal Visual IDentification) is a repository of images of the occlusal surface of bovid teeth. The dataset currently includes extant bovids from 7 tribes and 20 species (~3900). B.O.V.I.D. …

Observation‐based and modeling studies have identified the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region as a prominent climate change hotspot. While several initiatives have addressed the impacts of climate change in parts of the EMME, here we present an updated assessment, covering a wide range of timescales, phenomena and future pathways. Our assessment is based on a revised analysis of recent observations and projections and an extensive overview of the recent scientific literature on the causes and effects of regional climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions in the EMME are growing rapidly, surpassing those of the European Union, hence contributing significantly …

“What Do You Suggest That I Do Next?”: The Rival Geographies Of Ellen Irene Diggs, Constance Holden
“What Do You Suggest That I Do Next?”: The Rival Geographies Of Ellen Irene Diggs, Constance Holden
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This biographical essay tells the story of Dr. Ellen Irene Diggs (1906–1998), a Black woman anthropologist who specialized in African diasporic cultural and historical studies. Best known for her work with the heralded scholar W. E. B. Du Bois, Dr. Diggs was a writer, traveler, and educator who imagined an inclusive, expansive, and representative historical canon that captured the breadth and depth of Black politics and cultures. This essay argues that in so doing, Dr. Diggs charted a “rival geography” that challenged the dominant narratives of the academy. Building on the work of Stephanie Camp in her examination of rival …

The message design and human performance technology in video games, especially early video games have always been fascinating to me. From an instructional design perspective, the capabilities of the technology of the classic game consoles required a careful balance of achievable objectives, cognitive task analysis, guided problem solving, and message design. Raiders on the Atari is an excellent example of this balance. It is an epic adventure game, spanning 13+ distinct areas, with an inventory of items, where those hard to find items had to be used by the player to solve problems during their quest (and who would have …

Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed
Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed
LSU Master's Theses
The Dual-Factor Model of mental health highlights the need to consider both constructs associated with psychopathology and subjective well-being in relation to clinical outcomes. Harm avoidance, which is associated with behavioral inhibition, has been negatively associated with cognitive change. While subjective well-being has been positively associated with cognition. The current study aimed to examine both constructs in a single model to examine well-being as a moderator of the association of harm avoidance with cognitive decline. A sample of 728 older adults from the Rush University Memory and Aging Project was used. Participants completed batteries of questionnaires and neuropsychological tests at …

Sticky Floors And Glass Ceilings: Gender Wage Gap In Egypt, Mona Said, Mahdi Majbouri, Ghada Barsoum
Faculty Journal Articles
The fact that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has the lowest labor force participation rate for women in the world has been extensively studied, but discrimination in pay against working women has received considerably less attention. Using recently available datasets, this study examines the distribution of wages (inequality) across men and women employed in the public versus the private sector in Egypt. The analysis shows that because working women tend to be more educated than working men, the gender wage gap would have been larger if women had the same endowments. Quantile regressions and recentered influence functions …

Hybrid U-Net: Semantic Segmentation Of High-Resolution Satellite Images To Detect War Destruction, Shima Nabiee, Matthew Harding, Jonathan Hersh, Nader Bagherzadeh
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Destruction caused by violent conflicts play a big role in understanding the dynamics and consequences of conflicts, which is now the focus of a large body of ongoing literature in economics and political science. However, existing data on conflict largely come from news or eyewitness reports, which makes it incomplete, potentially unreliable, and biased for ongoing conflicts. Using satellite images and deep learning techniques, we can automatically extract objective information on violent events. To automate this process, we created a dataset of high-resolution satellite images of Syria and manually annotated the destroyed areas pixel-wise. Then, we used this dataset to …

This article looks at the United States’ federal H-2A Temporary Agricultural Visa Program and reforms proposed by the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. In this policy analysis, we draw on media content analysis and qualitative interviews to compare the viewpoints of farmers, workers, grower and worker advocacy groups, intermediary agents, and politicians. We find that perspectives on the program are dependent upon actors’ level of direct interaction with workers. Moderate-sized farmers and regionally based worker advocacy groups tend to be the most concerned with day-to-day program operations and fair working conditions. In contrast, national-level advocacy groups, intermediary agents, and politicians are …

Disturbances alter biodiversity via their specific characteristics, including severity and extent in the landscape, which act at different temporal and spatial scales. Biodiversity response to disturbance also depends on the community characteristics and habitat requirements of species. Untangling the mechanistic interplay of these factors has guided disturbance ecology for decades, generating mixed scientific evidence of biodiversity responses to disturbance. Understanding the impact of natural disturbances on biodiversity is increasingly important due to human-induced changes in natural disturbance regimes. In many areas, major natural forest disturbances, such as wildfires, windstorms, and insect outbreaks, are becoming more frequent, intense, severe, and widespread …

Seasonal Climatic Niche And Migration Movements Of Double-Crested Cormorants, D. Tommy King, Guiming Wang, Fred L. Cunningham
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Avian migrants are challenged by seasonal adverse climatic conditions and energetic costs of long-distance flying. Migratory birds may track or switch seasonal climatic niche between the breeding and non-breeding grounds. Satellite tracking enables avian ecologists to investigate seasonal climatic niche and circannual movement patterns of migratory birds. The Double-crested Cormorant (Nannopterum auritum, hereafter cormorant) wintering in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) migrates to the Northern Great Plains and Great Lakes and is of economic importance because of its impacts on aquaculture. We tested the climatic niche switching hypothesis that cormorants would switch climatic niche between summer and winter …
