Revitalization Through Food: Bringing Back Smalltown, Usa, Alyssa Chavez
Honors Projects
What makes a small town in the middle of nowhere USA unique, and what does food have to do with it? The following paper will discuss the impact of food on the revitalization process of small towns in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer questions concerning the revitalization process, how to measure the success of revitalization, and how food turns a town into a destination. Sidney Alive, a non-profit downtown revitalization group located in Sidney, Ohio, will be presented as a case study to discuss what could be a real-life success story. This case study will evaluate …
"Post Citizens United: Comparative Analysis Of Three State Legislatures And The Relationship Between Money In Politics And Political Polarization", Zeta M. Green
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Over the last decades, campaign finance has been the center of much political debate. The 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which prohibited any limit to corporate campaign expenditures under the First Amendment, changed the political landscape by allowing more money in politics and elections than ever before. Along with money in politics, political polarization is on the rise across the United States. When recognizing an increase in both of these variables in politics today, it is difficult to deny the possibility of a connection between the two. By examining the patterns that exist in …

A Maturity Model Of Data Modeling In Self-Service Business Intelligence Software, Anna Kurenkov
A Maturity Model Of Data Modeling In Self-Service Business Intelligence Software, Anna Kurenkov
Master of Science in Information Technology Theses
Although Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) is continually being adopted in various industries, there is a lack of research focused on data modeling in SSBI. This research aims to fill that research gap and propose a maturity model for SSBI data modeling which is generalizeable between different software and applicable for users of all technical backgrounds. Through extensive literature review, a five-tier maturity model was proposed, explained, and instantiated in PowerBI and Tableau. The testing of the model was found to be simple and intuitive, and the research concludes that the model is applicable to enterprise SSBI environments. This research is …

Impacts Of The Poultry Industry In Mississippi, Sara Watts
Master's Theses
This thesis examines the impacts of the poultry industry in seven counties in the Piney Woods region of South Mississippi: Wayne, Jones, Forrest, Lamar, Jefferson Davis, Marion, and Pike. Current research indicates that the poultry industry has a significant impact on the cultures and economies of rural towns throughout the United States. There is no current research that examines the effects of the poultry industry on residents of the Piney Woods. This thesis addresses that gap in the research and contributes to current understanding of how the industry molds and impacts the lives of those intimately associated with it.

Vertical And Diel Behavior Patterns Of Adult Lemon Sharks (Negaprion Brevirostris) Around The Southeastern Florida And Western Bahamas Coastal Shelves, Jacquelyne Reuder
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) is a large sub-tropical species found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Virginia to Brazil, including The Bahamas and Caribbean Sea. Previous studies on habitat utilization were conducted on juveniles in The Bahamas, but little is known about vertical depth and temperature preferences of adults. Given the species’ risk to overexploitation and habitat degradation, the IUCN Red List recently listed lemon sharks as Vulnerable. Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on lemon sharks (n=7) in 2008 and 2009 off Jupiter, Florida (n=6; two females, four males) and Tiger Beach, Bahamas (n=1; one …

Trends In Esophageal Adenocarcinoma And Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Incidence In The United States From 1992 To 2019, Kyle S Liu, Syed Ahsan Raza, Hashem B El-Serag, Aaron P Thrift
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Simple Summary
The incidence of esophageal cancer overall has increased in the United States, driven by increasing rates of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). However, whether rates of EAC are still rising is unclear. We examined trends in esophageal cancer overall and within important sub-groups of the population. We found that esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) rates have been steadily declining, while EAC rates rose rapidly before stabilizing in 2000. The trend of decreasing incidence of ESCC was observed almost uniformly by age group, sex, and race/ethnicity, while trends in EAC rates varied across these sub-groups. A cohort effect for EAC was …

Minds And Hearts And Digital Data. Collaborative Learning With Jesuit Manuscripts & Databases, Elisa Frei
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In a conversation with Emanuele Colombo, John O’Malley explained his historical method in eight points. In describing them, he noticed how “sources are mute” and how “to make them speak I must ask them questions”,[1] “the continuities are stronger and deeper than the discontinuities,”[2] and “if I really understand what is going on, I can explain it to an intelligent ten-year-old.”[3]This article aims at presenting the strategies and outcomes of a Public History project that involves on the one hand Jesuit sources of the early modern period, and on the other, non-professional historians who never studied …

JSU Yearbooks
The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.
Prescriptive Lists: A Taxonomy Of Lists Used In Prescriptive Discourse, Kelsie Westphal
Prescriptive Lists: A Taxonomy Of Lists Used In Prescriptive Discourse, Kelsie Westphal
Undergraduate Honors Theses
English prescriptive discourse generally shares language rules in the form of entries, many of which contain lists. However, while lists have recently caught the attention of scholars in several fields, not much if any research has been dedicated to the use of lists in prescriptive discourse. This thesis begins the exploration of the use of lists in prescriptive discourse by creating a taxonomy of lists found in prescriptive reference works such as usage guides and style guides. The study then discusses how characteristics of lists and of the categories featured in the taxonomy interact with prescription, opening the door for …

Exploring Heuristics And Best Practices For Redesigning Instructional Video, Kelly L. Murdock
Exploring Heuristics And Best Practices For Redesigning Instructional Video, Kelly L. Murdock
Theses and Dissertations
Instructional video is a common staple for delivering content in online courses. However, if the included videos are not properly created, many students will skip the video and its content. Improving instructional video has been the topic of many research projects, and we can learn from these studies how to create effective and engaging instructional videos--this is the topic of my dissertation. The first paper is an extended literature review that examines which key instructional design principles are supported in the literature. This helps developers to know which principles to focus on when designing video. The second paper is a …

In 2019, leading causes of death were ischaemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer's disease, and lung cancer. Main causes of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) were ischaemic heart disease, diabetes, lung cancer, low back pain, and stroke. …
Toward A More Humane Public Policy: How The Humanities Can, And Should, Inform The Creation And Analysis Of Public Policy, Eric Celler
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
This capstone investigates how the methodologies of the humanities can inform the creation and analysis of public policy. Since the mid-twentieth century, public policy has increasingly turned away from humanistic questions and toward technical questions. The result has been a public policy regime that focuses too much on manipulable variables and not on the humans that the policies are impacting. By applying humanistic methodologies to public policy, we are more likely to appreciate the inarticulable elements of human social organization and therefore devise public policy that is less harmful and more humble.

Managing soils to retain new plant inputs is key to moving toward a sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Management practices, like diversifying and perennializing agroecosystems, may affect the decomposer organisms that regulate how new residue is converted to persistent soil organic matter. Here we tested whether 12 years of diversifying/perennializing plants in agroecosystems through extended rotations or grassland restoration would decrease losses of new plant residue inputs and, thus, increase retention of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in soil. We tracked dual-labeled (13C and 15N), isotopically enriched wheat (Triticum aestivum) residue in situ for 2 years as it decomposed in three …
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
How South Asian Activists Queer The Model Minority Myth: A Critical Oral History Project, Noorie Baig
Communication ETDs
The model minority myth (MMM) is predicated on stereotypical perceptions of Asian Americans as subservient high-achievers who comply with the ideologies of meritocracy, whiteness, and capitalism. However, South Asian American (SAA) activists and community organisers, the focus of this study, are working to confront and abolish racist, heterosexist, and other exclusionary injustices, policies, and practices. This dissertation seeks to understand the historical influences of the MMM, the challenges SAA activists and organisers face, and the communication strategies they use to negotiate the MMM through their activism. Oral history methods and critical thematic analysis are used to elicit and analyse personal …

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
We examine the 4 recognized varieties of Penstemon scariosus that constitute a complex of related taxa that share overlapping morphological characters: namely varieties albifluvis, cyanomontanus, garrettii, and scariosus. Modern taxonomic descriptions and associated keys are not in complete agreement on how to clearly delineate these varieties. It is particularly important to understand the taxonomic circumscription of variety albifluvis, since it is being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act. To address the taxonomic position of taxa in this species complex, we examine the genetic structure of 66 accessions of P. scariosus, representing the …

Random Forest Modeling Approach To Predict Streamflow Intermittence Of Tennessee Headwaters Using Flow Conditioned Parameter Grids, Berkay Tok
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Water quality impairment in small tributaries due to soil erosion and stream degradation of West Tennessee is an ongoing problem. A method to model streamflow permanence can assist stream restoration work by supplementing ground monitoring and providing better targeting of conservation attempts in the most vulnerable areas. This project applied a random forest model by incorporating climatic and landcover data as predictors to create streamflow permanence data for the West Tennessee tributaries (Lower Mississippi-Hatchie Hydrologic Unit, HUC 4-801). Specifically, the applicability of the Flow Conditioned Parameter Grids (FCPG) process is tested to study if the process improves prediction results compared …

Dispossession Of Identity And Land: Assimilation At Carlisle Indian Industrial School 1879-1884, Morgan Lane Ingram Bentley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In 1879, the Carlisle Barracks were placed under the care of Richard Henry Pratt in order to establish a federally funded institution for the assimilation of American Indian youth. This institution, Carlisle Indian Industrial School, would become the flagship for the experiment of American Indian education. Led by Pratt, the institution was to transform students’ understanding of their race and cultural identity. American Indian students from across the United States would attend Carlisle and be forced to assimilate by speaking English, cutting their hair, changing their names, and removing themselves from the culture of their past. Yet students did not …

Jaws And Effect: A Preliminary Archaeological Analysis On Shark And Ray Remains From The Coastal Florida Site Of Marineland, Isabella Rosinko
Symposium of Student Scholars
Marineland is a coastal Florida site, located in the East and Central archaeological region, and occupied from the Middle Archaic (5000-3000 BC) to the St. Johns I and II periods (AD 500-1565). My focus will be on faunal remains dated between the St. Johns I and II periods. For this project, I will be conducting a zooarchaeological analysis of shark and ray remains. Zooarchaeology is the study of animal or faunal remains found in archaeological contexts. The faunal remains present at Marineland encompass a number of species, from terrestrial mammals to crabs. Historically there has been little archaeological significance given …
Lidar Field Data Collection For 3d Cartography, Danny Jang
Lidar Field Data Collection For 3d Cartography, Danny Jang
Symposium of Student Scholars
Remote sensing using LiDAR technology for terrestrial mapping can be done using airborne or ground-based methods. Ground-based methods of LiDAR scanning have the favorable advantage of being much more cost-effective compared to the majority of aerial choices (balloons and drones might overcome this advantage in the future) for small-area large-scale cartography. LiDAR data collection has been traditionally utilized for urban applications, forest applications, agricultural applications, and geoscience applications. This student research aims to use the data gathered from this process for crafting 3D maps using cost-effective 3D printers.

Guano Among Bat Species From Two Regions Shows Influence Of Geography And Diet On Bacterial Community, Rahma Ahmed, Thomas Mcelroy, Shannon Whitney, Lydia Moore
Symposium of Student Scholars
Studies of bat guano have shown that the diversity and structure of associated microbial communities can be related to factors such as host phylogeny, life history and reproductive stage, geography, and diet. Many insectivorous bat species in the southeastern U.S. have generalist diets that may shift seasonally to take advantage of abundant prey species or maximize caloric intake. Seasonal shifts in prey availability or consumption should be reflected in a guano microbiome change. We also expected to detect distinct guano microbiomes within species. Within species, distinct microbial communities related to geography, and finally life history and reproductive stage. We compared …
