Joseph Smith, Responses To Early Missionaries Topics In Byu Studies

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Following closely on the heels of a recent double-sized issue on Mormons and film, the latest issue of BYU Studies contains a landmark study by historian Max H Parkin entitled “Joseph Smith and the United Firm: The Growth and Decline of the Church’s First Master Plan of Business and Finance, Ohio and Missouri, 1832–1834.” Never before have the historical documents been so thoroughly and masterfully marshaled to give readers a heightened appreciation for the importance of the “United Firm” in the early Church. Along with all else that Joseph Smith was revealing and directing during these years, the consecrated legacy …

The Influence Of Personality And Trauma On The Outcomes Of Sex Offender Treatment In An Outpatient Setting, Nicholas R. Rogers Sep 2022

The Influence Of Personality And Trauma On The Outcomes Of Sex Offender Treatment In An Outpatient Setting, Nicholas R. Rogers

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Sex offenders in the United States invoke a negative reaction in a majority of people. Often, there is a stigma about the character and personality of an individual who would commit such acts. These perceptions have largely kept the development of treatment modalities limited when compared to other psychological problems. One area that continues to need research is in the factors that contribute to the outcomes of treatment for sex offenders. The present study investigated the relationships between perceived historical trauma, personality, and treatment completion in an outpatient group of sexual offenders. We hypothesized that (1) sexual offenders who completed …

Investigating The First/Last Mile Problem In Underserved Communities: A Case Study In Camden City, Nj, Ruqaya Alfaris

Theses and Dissertations

The first/last mile (FLM) is defined as the distance a transiting person should complete before boarding or after alighting at a transit station. The FLM trip is one of the major barriers to access transit, which significantly affects individuals' accessibility to critical services. Specifically, this is prevalent in underserved communities in which public transportation constitutes the major mode of travel. As a case study, the current study discusses the FLM barriers in Camden City, NJ. The study comprehensively reviews the existing literature of the FLM practice to identify the lessons learned from previously conducted plans and programs. To supplement the …

Reconstructing Sedimentary Processes In A Permian Channel–Lobe Transition Zone: An Outcrop Study In The Karoo Basin, South Africa, F Pohl, Jt Eggenhuisen, J De Leeuw, Et Al Sep 2022

Reconstructing Sedimentary Processes In A Permian Channel–Lobe Transition Zone: An Outcrop Study In The Karoo Basin, South Africa, F Pohl, Jt Eggenhuisen, J De Leeuw, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Turbidity currents commonly bypass sediment in submarine channels on the continental slope, and deposit sediment lobes farther down-dip on the flat and unconfined abyssal plain. Seafloor and outcrop data have shown that the transition from bypass to deposition usually occurs over complex zones referred to as channel–lobe transition zones (CLTZs). Recognition of these zones in cores and outcrop remains challenging due to a lack of characteristic sedimentary facies and structures. This paper focuses on Unit E of the Permian Fort Brown Formation in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, in the Slagtersfontein outcrop complex, which has previously been interpreted as a …

2020 Toolkit For Centering Racial Equity, Actionable Intelligence For Social Policy

CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact

Societal “progress” is often marked by the construction of new infrastructure that fuels change and innovation. Just as railroads and interstate highways were the defining infrastructure projects of the 1800 and 1900s, the development of data infrastructure is a critical innovation of our century. Railroads and highways were drivers of development and prosperity for some investors and sites. Yet other individuals and communities were harmed, displaced, bypassed, ignored, and forgotten by those efforts. As railroads and highways both developed and decimated communities, so too can data infrastructure. At this moment in our history, we can co-create data infrastructure to promote …

Assessment Of Using Uav Imagery Over Featureless Surfaces For Topographic Applications, Ahmed Taha, Mostafa Rabah, Rasha Mohie, Ahmed Elhadary, Essam Ghanem

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The growth and development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a photogrammetric platform, concurrently with the advances in Computer Vision (CV) and image processing algorithms have resulted using UAV Photogrammetry in several topographic applications. CV software algorithms rely on extracting, describing, and matching tie points from the sequences overlapping images to generate 3D colored point clouds. One of the biggest problems obstructing the automated processing of UAV imagery is the featureless of the covered surface. This paper has provided the ability, results, and accuracy of processing images captured by UAVs over non-textured sandy surfaces by providing four aligning and geo-referencing …

Remote Sensing Of Boat Abandonment Using Google Earth, Millicent R. Payne, Andrew Turner Sep 2022

Remote Sensing Of Boat Abandonment Using Google Earth, Millicent R. Payne, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abandoned boats represent a pervasive and growing problem in the coastal zone that has received little regulatory or scientific attention. In this study, we show how Google Earth can be employed to remotely identify abandoned boats and provide information on their size, age and condition. Based on specified criteria for abandonment, a survey of southern England (1700 km in length) revealed the presence of 266 boats that were mainly located in the intertidal zones of estuaries and inlets and that were often contained within clusters. Boat length ranged from 2.6 to 60 m (median = 10.5 m), and since 2004 …

Book Excerpt: Analysis Of Textual Variants Of The Book Of Mormon

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

At the beginning of Alma 43:14, the original manuscript reads desenters, which Oliver Cowdery miscopied into the printer’s manuscript as desendants; in other words, he ended up replacing dissenters with descendants. This mistake (a visual error) was facilitated by the similar spelling Oliver used for both these words. Notice that earlier in this verse Oliver wrote dissented as desented in P (but which the 1830 typesetter respelled in P as dissented). Moreover, at the end of verse 13, Oliver spelled descendants as desendants in both manuscripts. The proximity of this last instance prompted the error at the beginning of verse …

Narratives Of Transnational Placemaking: Exploring Migrant Workers’ Hidden Histories Through Memory-Guided City Walks: A Migrant Woman’S Narrative, Monika Palmberger Sep 2022

Narratives Of Transnational Placemaking: Exploring Migrant Workers’ Hidden Histories Through Memory-Guided City Walks: A Migrant Woman’S Narrative, Monika Palmberger

Narrative Culture

Austria’s so-called guest workers (temporary labor migrants), who immigrated from the former Yugoslavia and Turkey in the 1960s and 1970s, have shaped Vienna for more than half a century, but their histories and present social realities remain politically and socially marginalized. This article uncovers these histories and pays attention to the narrativization of space and its performative dimension—as they emerged in narrative interviews and memory-guided city walks—on the basis of one selected case. It analyzes the intertwining of narratives and places in two ways: how narratives constitute and preserve places, but also how places shape and reinforce narratives about the …

Recent Emergence Of Bovine Coronavirus Variants With Mutations In The Hemagglutinin-Esterase Receptor Binding Domain In U.S. Cattle, Aspen M. Workman, Tara G. Mcdaneld, Gregory P. Harhay, Subha Das, John Dustin Loy, Benjamin M. Hause Sep 2022

Recent Emergence Of Bovine Coronavirus Variants With Mutations In The Hemagglutinin-Esterase Receptor Binding Domain In U.S. Cattle, Aspen M. Workman, Tara G. Mcdaneld, Gregory P. Harhay, Subha Das, John Dustin Loy, Benjamin M. Hause

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) has spilled over to many species, including humans, where the host range variant coronavirus OC43 is endemic. The balance of the opposing activities of the surface spike (S) and hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) glycoproteins controls BCoV avidity, which is critical for interspecies transmission and host adaptation. Here, 78 genomes were sequenced directly from clinical samples collected between 2013 and 2022 from cattle in 12 states, primarily in the Midwestern U.S. Relatively little genetic diversity was observed, with genomes having >98% nucleotide identity. Eleven isolates collected between 2020 and 2022 from four states (Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Wisconsin) contained a …

Contestation And Participation: Concepts, Measurement, And Inference, Vanessa Alexandra Boese, Matthew Wilson Phd Sep 2022

Contestation And Participation: Concepts, Measurement, And Inference, Vanessa Alexandra Boese, Matthew Wilson Phd

Faculty Publications

Contestation and participation are commonly viewed as two main constituent dimensions of electoral democracy. How exactly have these two dimensions been conceptualized and measured in the literature? Are they empirically observable and do they matter for democratic development and stability? This article answers the first of these questions and considers their implications for the second by reviewing the literature on these two dimensions. We discuss three issues that affect conclusions about dimensions of democracy and their relevance for understanding democratic development: First, conceptual ambiguities—substantive overlap between the two concepts—obscure the meanings of each of the two dimensions. Such ambiguities led …

Short Warm-Side Wet-Bulb Temperature Distribution Tails Lead To Accelerated Increases In Extreme Threshold Exceedances Under Global Warming, Yianna Sotirios Bekris Sep 2022

Short Warm-Side Wet-Bulb Temperature Distribution Tails Lead To Accelerated Increases In Extreme Threshold Exceedances Under Global Warming, Yianna Sotirios Bekris

Dissertations and Theses

Humid-heat extremes threaten human health and are increasing in frequency with global warming, so elucidating factors affecting their rate of change is critical. This thesis examines the role of historical (1985-2014) wet-bulb temperature distribution tail shape on the probability of wet-bulb temperature extreme threshold exceedances under 2°Celsius global warming. Analysis of global climate models and reanalysis reveals that non-Gaussian wet-bulb temperature distribution tails are common worldwide across extensive, spatially coherent regions. More rapid increases in the number of days exceeding the historical 95th percentile are projected in locations with shorter-than-Gaussian warm-side tails. Of the two primary components of wet-bulb temperature, …

Anthropogenic Contaminants In Glacial Environments Ii: Release And Downstream Consequences, Dylan B. Beard, Caroline C. Clason, Sally Rangecroft, Ewa Poniecka, Kim J. Ward, Will H. Blake

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Anthropogenic contamination has been detected in glacial and proglacial environments around the globe. Through mechanisms of secondary release, these contaminants are finding their way into glacial hydrological systems and downstream environments, with potential to impact hundreds of millions of people who rely on glacial meltwater for water, food and energy security worldwide. The first part of our progress report outlined the sources and accumulation mechanisms of contaminants in glacial environments (Part I: Inputs and accumulation). Here we assess processes of contaminant release, pathways to downstream environments, and socio-environmental consequences. We reflect on the potential impacts these contaminants could have for …

Lam-Related Research Funded Under Spain’S National Research Agenda (2010 – 2020), Ana R. Pacios, Sara Martínez Cardama

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study analysed and contextualised research on LAMs (acronym for libraries, archives and museums) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under competitive calls for projects from 2010 to 2020. The ultimate intention was to verify the existence or otherwise of a national research agenda on these cultural institutions. The initial search and location of Spanish Ministry-funded projects in official sources was followed by data processing and grouping by subject category. A total of 145 projects were analysed. The results showed LAM projects to be scant in number, highly varied in terms of subject matter, poorly funded, widely …
