Potential Benefits Of The Campus Outdoor Built Environment On Student Stress, Leading To Improved Retention, Kevin Dilliard Dec 2022

Potential Benefits Of The Campus Outdoor Built Environment On Student Stress, Leading To Improved Retention, Kevin Dilliard

Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations

University landscape managers often ask themselves, are they making a difference? Since what they do is not a revenue-generating department, how can they validate their true worth beyond making the campus beautiful, which is excellent, but what added value do they bring? As is common practice, when economic times get tough, the landscape department budget is one of the first to be cut, but is that the wisest thing to do? This research was intended to explore the concept that the services landscape managers provide have a return on investment by providing an environment in which students can thrive and …

Architects Of Abundance: Indigenous Regenerative Food And Land Management Systems And The Excavation Of Hidden History, Lyla June Johnston Dec 2022

Architects Of Abundance: Indigenous Regenerative Food And Land Management Systems And The Excavation Of Hidden History, Lyla June Johnston

Indigenous Studies

Pre-Columbian and contemporary Indigenous Nations of North and South America (hereafter referred to as Turtle Island and Abya Yala) have managed ecosystems extensively to produce prolific and predictable food systems for themselves and non-humans, whom they often view as relatives. The elements of earth, water, fire, and air are explored to analyze Indigenous soil management, Indigenous aquaculture, Indigenous pyrogenic land management, and Indigenous oral histories, respectively. First, a review of four Indigenous societies and their soil management techniques revealed that none of these systems require outside fertilizer or irrigation to sustain ecocentric food systems on millennial scales. Second, a comparative …

Spatio-Temporal Variation Of Some Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Water In Lower Seybouse River (Northeastern Algeria), Adem Fraga, Amel Ketif, Karima Sifi, Aziz Laifa

Journal of Bioresource Management

Oued Seybouse is one of the most important rivers in Algeria. It runs for about 240 km, flows through sevenwilayas (Guelma, Annaba, Souk Ahras, El Tarf, Oum El Bouaghi, Constantine and Skikda) and 68 municipalities, 30 of which are fully included in its basin, and only partially for the others. OuedSeybouse’s water is exposed to multiple sources of pollution, as it directly receives industrial and urban discharges throughout its course. Also agriculture, which is intensively practiced in the lower valley of Seybouse, contributes to the pollution of this watercourse. In this context, we set out to assess the physical-chemical quality …

Patterns Of Consumption At The Uk’S First “Alcohol-Free Off-Licence”: Who Engaged With No- And Low-Alcohol Drinks And Why?, Claire G. Davey

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

No- and low-alcohol beverages are currently experiencing high sales growth in the UK, but academic research regarding the production, regulation, marketing and consumption of these drinks remains limited. This article presents research findings from ethnographic customer observations and semi-structured staff interviews at Club Soda’s temporary “alcohol-free off-licence” in London – the UK’s first shop that sold exclusively no- and low-alcohol drinks. I analyse the demographics of who came to the off-licence, and how and why they engaged with no- and low-alcohol drinks. Findings suggest that relatively equal numbers of non-drinkers and current drinkers were customers of the off-licence, but there …

International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is a major devastating viral disease, majorly affecting the tomato production globally. The disease is majorly transmitted by the Whitefly. The Begomovirus (TYLCV) having a six major protein coding genes, among them the C1/AC1 is evidently associated with viral replication. Owing to immense role of C1/AC1 gene, the present study is an initial effort to elucidate the factors shaping the codon usage bias and evolutionary pattern of TYLCV-C1/AC1 gene in five major Asian countries. Based on publically available nucleotide sequence data the Codon usage pattern, Evolutionary and Phylogeographic reconstruction was carried out. The study …

"Cameras Don’T Kill People": Community-Based Organizations And The Expansion Of Surveillance Systems In St. Louis, Missouri, Claire Greene Dec 2022

"Cameras Don’T Kill People": Community-Based Organizations And The Expansion Of Surveillance Systems In St. Louis, Missouri, Claire Greene

Dissertations

In many cities, private camera ownership and video sharing partnerships with law enforcement are on the rise. These private surveillance networks have dramatically increased the reach of law enforcement and intensified the monitoring of urban life. Although police use of private cameras has become the subject of contentious debate, our understanding of private camera systems and how they are used by the police remains quite limited, largely focusing on either utopian or dystopian narratives. Drawing on interviews with community organizations in St. Louis, Missouri, that have installed neighborhood surveillance systems, this dissertation seeks to provide some insight into the rise …

Possible Overestimation Of Nitrogen Dioxide Outgassing During The Beirut 2020 Explosion, Ashraf Farahat, Nayla El-Kork, Ramesh P. Singh, Feng Jing

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

On 4 August 2020, a strong explosion occurred near the Beirut seaport, Lebanon and killed more than 200 people and damaged numerous buildings in the vicinity. As Amonium Nitrate (AN) caused the explosion, many studies claimed the release of large amounts of NO2 in the atmosphere may have resulted in a health hazard in Beirut and the vicinity. In order to reasonably evaluate the significance of NO2 amounts released in the atmosphere, it is important to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of NO2 during and after the blast and compare it to the average day-to-day background emissions from …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go: The Impact Of Crossing Migrants In Local Communities In Mexico, Norma M. De La Rosa-Bustamante

Whittier Scholars Program

The interactions between migrants and Mexican local communities have positive and negative outcomes. A report by Human Rights First found that more than 630 violent crimes against asylum seekers were reported in the first few months of the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Still, some migrants have been able to assimilate and stay in Mexico, particularly in large cities such as Tijuana, Baja California and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. This research project combines qualitative data collected through interviews with local NGOs between September 2020 to February 2021 and secondary research data. It focuses on the living conditions of migrants who have stayed …

Raj Karega Khalsa! - The Evolution Of The Sikh Identity, Vineet Mehmi Dec 2022

Raj Karega Khalsa! - The Evolution Of The Sikh Identity, Vineet Mehmi

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Generally, religion has served as a method of creating a unique identity and history for many groups across history. This concept is especially true for the Sikh community, to the point that they have carved their own niche across the different places they inhabit in the world, whether that be their homeland of Panjab or their extensive population in places like Canada or the United Kingdom. However, this expansion and development of their culture did not come without a cost, formed through countless battles, martyrdom, and revolutions. Chardi Kala, a foundational idea in Sikhi that refers to eternal optimism even …

A Qualitative Study Into Modern Psychoanalytic Joining And Mirroring Through Psychotherapeutic Exchanges, Tricia Shihui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation intends to address current deficits in knowledge regarding the modern psychoanalytic interventions of joining and mirroring, including substantial definition issues in the literature and the absence of current writings on the psychotherapeutic interventions of joining and mirroring in practice. The focus of the study was on the ever-dynamic landscape between modern analytically-informed practitioners and their clients in psychotherapeutic exchange(s) that the practitioners believed encompassed joining and/or mirroring interventions. Participants were six experienced practitioners who described their clinical work as being informed by modern psychoanalysis and who have engaged or were currently engaging in individual psychotherapy with a client. …

Hydrologic Modeling With Remote Sensing For The Estimation Of Groundwater Resources Within The Sand River Catchment, South Africa, Sophia Bakar Dec 2022

Hydrologic Modeling With Remote Sensing For The Estimation Of Groundwater Resources Within The Sand River Catchment, South Africa, Sophia Bakar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Sand River Catchment is an important tributary of the transboundary Limpopo River in South Africa, which spans Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, and Mozambique. Groundwater is a critical resource in the region, especially in the context of population growth and climate change. Data are needed for proper management of these water resources. In regions where groundwater data are sparse in time, space, or both, the most promising solutions come from satellites and hydrologic models. Regional literature suggests that the Soutpansberg Mountains, located within the Sand Catchment, are high-elevation water towers with uncertain groundwater resources. Improved understanding of groundwater resources in …

Assessing The Mental Health Of Women At The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Cruelty: Personal And Population Level Risk Factors For Co-Victimization, Alaina M. Beauchamp

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

One predictor of intimate partner violence (IPV) occurring in the home is pet abuse. The high prevalence of pet cruelty among IPV relationship can create a significant barrier to seeking help due to the inability to bring the pet or concern for the pet’s wellbeing. This human-animal bond is a more common source of emotional support among victims with experiences of pet abuse, as opposed to women whose pets had not been abused. This study 1) explored the relationship between victims of IPV and their pets, the dynamics and characteristics of situations of co-victimization (i.e., abuse of both a human …

An Essay On Ideology And Legal Education In Micro Jurisdictions: The Example Of Jersey, David Marrani Dec 2022

An Essay On Ideology And Legal Education In Micro Jurisdictions: The Example Of Jersey, David Marrani

Journal of Civil Law Studies

This article explores the question of legal education in micro jurisdictions using the case of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency, positioned geographically, historically and culturally between two larger jurisdictions, France and the UK. It analyses how Jersey’s legal training is pulled towards those large “big neighbours,” rather than focusing on what makes its specificity and attraction. It questions how legal education in micro-jurisdiction is actually linked to ideology. The article starts with the following question: are we taking micro jurisdictions seriously? It then considers the routes to legal qualification in micro jurisdictions, before focusing specifically on the case of Jersey …

Gender Differences In Breast Cancer Treatment Decisions And Related Survival: A Study Using The National Cancer Database, Shamim Shahi Dec 2022

Gender Differences In Breast Cancer Treatment Decisions And Related Survival: A Study Using The National Cancer Database, Shamim Shahi

Theses & Dissertations

Despite increasing incidence, male breast cancer (MBC) remains understudied in almost all aspects of disease management. MBC patients are more likely to be diagnosed with larger tumors, at an advanced stage, and to experience poorer survival than female patients. There is a need to identify modifiable factors that can improve MBC patients’ survival.

This dissertation aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in the refusal of recommended treatments and related survival, by gender, in breast cancer patients enrolled in the National Cancer Database. Specifically, we conducted separate analyses for four treatments: hormone therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Then, …

Utilizing Remote Sensing Technology To Relocate Lubra Village And Visualize Flood Damages, Ronan Wallace Dec 2022

Utilizing Remote Sensing Technology To Relocate Lubra Village And Visualize Flood Damages, Ronan Wallace

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

As weather patterns change worldwide, isolated communities impacted by climate change go unnoticed and we need community and habitat-conscious solutions. In Himalayan Mustang, Nepal, indigenous Lubra village faces threats of increasing flash flooding. After every flood, residual concrete-like sediment hardens across the riverbed, causing the riverbed elevation to rise. As elevation increases, sediment encroaches on Lubra’s agricultural fields and homes, magnifying flood vulnerability. In the last monsoon season alone, the village witnessed floods swallowing several fields and damaging two homes. One solution considers relocating the village to a new location entirely. However, relocation poses a challenging task, as eight centuries …

Implementing Routine Depression Screening In An Urgent Care Setting: An Implementation Science Project, Lori Conyers Dec 2022

Implementing Routine Depression Screening In An Urgent Care Setting: An Implementation Science Project, Lori Conyers

Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current

Identifying patients with depression is essential, and early detection of depression leads to early intervention. Routine screening of patients for depression is the responsibility of the primary care provider, but many patients have not had a primary care visit in the recent past. Those patients without a primary care provider are likely not being screened for depression. Urgent care (UC) may be the best opportunity to screen patients who do not have a medical home. However, the dynamic nature of the urgent care setting may dissuade staff from engaging in routine screening. As a quality improvement (QI) effort, regular PHQ …

Analyzing The Effects Of Climate Impacts In El Salvador And How They Influence Pollution, Ecosystems And Communities, Veronica Norio-Tomasino

Master's Projects and Capstones

Due to projections of rising temperatures and increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events, the rate at which climate change is impacting nations is devastating. However, developing countries and vulnerable communities are not the primary contributors to climate change, but they are at a greater risk for climate impacts by industrialized nations. As a result of increased human activity, developing nations such as El Salvador are particularly susceptible to climate-related events. Deforestation, water pollution, and human health risks are some activities that have contributed to El Salvador's vulnerability to climate change, drastically affecting rural communities suffering from multidimensional poverty. …

Lessons From History: The Remarkable Leadership Of Eleanor Roosevelt And Why It Matters Today (Part 1), Emilio F. Iodice

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Few people had a greater impact on their generation than Eleanor Roosevelt. She was what she professed to be: a person not afraid of criticism, willing to sacrifice and take responsibility and to lead others by her example. Her life was filled with moments of courage, wisdom, compassion, empathy, and amazing emotional intelligence. The following is Part I of an overview of her life, her leadership secrets, and how she dealt with enormous challenges as a person ― a human being and a woman who grew up in an age of prejudice and discrimination.

Roles Of Religious Guides In Tourism: A Qualitative Study From Japan, Ricardo Nicolas Progano

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage travel has become an important element in contemporary tourism, as visitors flock to sacred locations (UNWTO, 2015). However, some aspects of pilgrimage travel remain relatively understudied, with one of them being the roles of guides in these locations. Based on previous academic works, the present study aims to bridge this gap by analysing the role of religious figures who engage in guiding activities aimed at the general public. For this, Shippōryū-ji, a Shugendō temple located in Japan, is presented as the case study. As previous research on the subject is scarce, a qualitative approach was deemed suitable. Utilising interview …
