Holism, Philanthropy, And Community Self-Determination: A Case Study Of Urban Sustainability Logics In Kalamazoo, Robert Roznowski Apr 2022

Holism, Philanthropy, And Community Self-Determination: A Case Study Of Urban Sustainability Logics In Kalamazoo, Robert Roznowski

Dissertations

The social, economic, and ecological crises of contemporary cities have compelled some communities to pursue urban sustainability agendas. In the United States, municipal governments and local actors engage with a myriad of urban sustainability discourses and “logics” that shape urban sustainability agendas. The literature suggests that urban sustainability discourses and logics are shifting in ways that are more “selective” or exclusive of spaces, issues, and people. This study investigates the urban sustainability logics taking shape in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Most existing research focuses on large cities with well-established urban sustainability agendas. In contrast, this case study focuses on the urban sustainability …

How Can Teachers Utilize A Curriculum To Expand Students’ Knowledge Of Waste Management And Change Their Waste Reduction Behaviors?, Alexis Craig

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has shown that environmental education is an important tool to develop students’ knowledge of the environment and foster more environmentally friendly behaviors (Braun et. al., 2018). Lack of education in waste management and waste reduction fields has led to confusion on where waste goes, what can be recycled, and how students’ can change their behaviors to reduce their waste footprint. This paper investigates waste management in the United States and North Dakota, and how it can be implemented into an environmental education curriculum. The curriculum designed for this project uses this information and these environmental education and behavior change …

Decolonizing Environmental Education: A Resource Guide For Non-Indigenous Educators, Kaitlin Ziehr Apr 2022

Decolonizing Environmental Education: A Resource Guide For Non-Indigenous Educators, Kaitlin Ziehr

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The field of environmental education is shaped by pervasive narratives and ideologies of settler colonialism. Many scholars cite the need for Indigenous voices and perspectives to be centered in education in order to move towards a process of decolonization, reconciliation, and support for ongoing Indigenous resurgence. In order for non-Indigenous educators to be able to guide students towards critical understanding of the history and context of land in environmental education, they must first investigate their own identity and assumptions within settler colonial society and education. This capstone project provides a resource guide in the form of a website for non-Indigenous …

The Rise Of An Eco-Spiritual Imaginary: Ecology And Spirituality As Decolonial Protest In Contemporary Multi-Ethnic American Literature, Andrew Michael Spencer Apr 2022

The Rise Of An Eco-Spiritual Imaginary: Ecology And Spirituality As Decolonial Protest In Contemporary Multi-Ethnic American Literature, Andrew Michael Spencer

English Theses and Dissertations

The Rise of an Eco-Spiritual Imaginary reveals a shared ecological aesthetic among contemporary U.S. ethnic writers whose novels communicate a decolonial spiritual reverence for the earth. This shared narrative focus challenges white settler colonial mythologies of manifest destiny and American exceptionalism to instantiate new ways of imagining community across socially constructed boundaries of time, space, nation, race, and species. The eco-spiritual imaginary—by which I mean a shared reverence for the ecological interconnection between all living beings—articulates a common biological origin and sacredness of all life that transcends racial difference while remaining grounded in local ethnicities and bioregions. The novelists representing …

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed Apr 2022

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed

Masters Theses

In the year 2022, there are 12 federally reaffirmed Native American tribes in Michigan. These tribes all maintain natural resource departments to manage tribal environments. Indigenous groups have a rich history of protection and understanding of the natural world. This connection to land and water has been systematically challenged through patterns of colonialism. Through policy making, revitalization efforts and environmental ethics, the State of Michigan has been improved by tribal natural resource departments. But, while the United States and the State of Michigan recognizes tribal sovereignty, meaningful tribal consultation is inadequate. Through collaborative interviews, historical sources, and contemporary evidence, this …

Did The Clean Air Act Improve Environmental Justice Disparities?, Jared Jageler

Economics Honors Projects

This paper analyzes the differential impacts of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) on the racial pollution exposure gap, also known as the Environmental Justice (EJ) gap. Using recently developed, Census tract-level satellite data of PM2.5 pollution, I test whether CAAA non-attainment status and resulting State Implementation Plans decreased pollution in high-percentage Black and Hispanic areas more than in non-high percentage Black and Hispanic tracts. My results confirm that the CAAA reduced overall pollution concentrations in the U.S. and decreased the absolute level of the Environmental Justice gap. A heterogeneity analysis provides evidence that the results are primarily driven …

Murals & Mother Nature: Urban Environmental Art In Lisbon Reveals Great Concern And Appreciation For The Environment, Ana Gunther

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Urban art is a novel dimension of the environmental movement. Utilizing highly trafficked areas, urban art has the potential to spread environmental messages both because of the size of the audience and because of the contrast between nature-centered art and the urban context. The paper discusses 15 environmental urban artworks in Lisbon and conducts a visual and thematic analysis. The analysis revealed five themes present in Lisbon: the power and beauty of nature, connection with nature, environmental loss and degradation, waste management, and climate change. The most prevalent theme in Lisbon was the connection with nature, followed by a tie …

Capital City Ventures Towards An Equitable Clean Energy Transition: A Case Study Comparison Between Columbia, South Carolina And Richmond, Virginia, Claire Windsor Apr 2022

Capital City Ventures Towards An Equitable Clean Energy Transition: A Case Study Comparison Between Columbia, South Carolina And Richmond, Virginia, Claire Windsor

Senior Theses

Combatting climate change requires a rapid transition to renewable sources for energy generation. In the United States, the electricity sector alone accounts for 28% of greenhouse gas emissions (28%), with about 63% of electricity generation derived from burning of fossil fuels (EPA, 2020). In order to lower greenhouse emissions from the energy sector, federal, state, and local policies must pave the way for renewable energy and energy efficiency innovations and policies. However, political action to address the effects and combat the causes of climate change have been limited due to political gridlock at the federal level. In addition, under neoliberalism, …

Foreword To Environmental Justice In America: Where We Have Been & Can Go, Zachary R.M. Outzen

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Recognizing that recent progress is only the beginning in a long journey to rectifying past environmental injustices, this Symposium was convened to ask two critical questions regarding the state of environmental justice in America today. First, how did we get here? Second, how do we move forward?

With an eye to a future in which America lives up to Dr. Bob Bullard’s vision of environmental justice, the Symposium hosted four panel discussions, featuring scholars of legal and non-legal disciplines, attorneys and non-legal advocates, and the members of the marginalized communities on the front lines of the struggle for environmental justice. …

Hyflex Primary Source Instruction For First-Year Writing Students, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Dominique Turnbow, Timothy Chu Mar 2022

Hyflex Primary Source Instruction For First-Year Writing Students, Crystal Goldman, Amanda Roth, Dominique Turnbow, Timothy Chu

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Teaching first-year university students to engage with and analyze primary sources can offer a number of significant challenges, including the need to protect fragile physical items in library collections and the prevalence of historical sources centering white hegemony. Add in the need for the information literacy instruction to be scalable for large groups, plus available synchronously and asynchronously, and designing a meaningful learning experience becomes exponentially more difficult.

Yet a fruitful partnership between a team of librarians and the faculty of an undergraduate writing program allowed for an innovative and hyflex approach to primary source instruction. Through the use of …

More Money, Fewer Problems: A Post-Alston V. Ncaa Approach To Reducing Gender Inequities In Sports, Kelley L. Flint

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

In 2021 over the span of a few months, amateurism, the foundation of the

National Collegiate Athletic Association was challenged and redefined. Following

the passage of “name, image, and likeness” laws at the state level

and an unfavorable Supreme Court ruling, the NCAA’s structure has been

forced to evolve. These changes have opened up possibilities for college athletes

to monetize their playing in a model that is not based on viewership or

revenue sharing. Serious equity gaps between men’s and women’s sports

continue to exist, predicated on which sports generate the most money. While

not a holistic solution, name, image …

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

This paper examines administrative court’s view in the Izin Lingkungan PLTU Celukan Bawang case. The paper puts emphasis on the use of actual losses to assess the plaintiffs’ legal standing and the deadline for filing a lawsuit. This paper considers that the court was incorrect in interpreting the legal standing by focusing on the absence of plaintiffs’ actual losses. The court also took a conservative position in determining the deadline for filing the lawsuit. This paper criticizes the court’s failure to take into account the issue of climate change addressed by the plaintiffs, so that the court missed a golden …
