Analysis Of Menthol Extracted From Mint Leaves Using Vcd And Computation Generated Spectra, Ethan Xu Jan 2022

Analysis Of Menthol Extracted From Mint Leaves Using Vcd And Computation Generated Spectra, Ethan Xu

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Recently, the terpene class of molecules have been under much interest due to their potential medicinal properties. Terpenes such as cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol have been studied for their psychological effects, while others like myrcene are of interest due to their antifungal and antibacterial properties. However, some of these terpenes possess different properties dependent on their stereochemistry, potentially with one enantiomer having the desired the effect and the other having a reduced or even harmful effect in some cases. Despite the importance of stereochemistry in medicine, techniques that are sensitive to it are still uncommon, but one technique in the form …

On Humility In Medicine, Frida Zavala Jan 2022

On Humility In Medicine, Frida Zavala

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

The importance of medical virtues has allowed physicians to flourish within their fields as they interact and form relationships with their co-workers, themselves, and, most importantly, their patients. Though much attention has been paid to virtues like compassion and integrity, the virtue of humility has been overlooked. This is unfortunate because humility, I will argue, is deeply important to being a virtuous physician. The humble physician collaboratively works with their patients to understand their concerns and find a solution in the patient’s best interest. In addition, I will argue that humility can indeed be taught and offer how it can …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine ecosystems have been used, impacted by, and managed by human populations for millennia. As ecosystem degradation has been a common outcome of these activities, marine management increasingly considers ecosystem restoration. Currently, there is no coherent data recording format or framework for marine restoration projects. As a result, data are inconsistently recorded and it is difficult to universally track progress, assess restoration's global effectiveness, reduce reporting bias, collect a holistic suite of metrics, and share information. Barriers to developing a unified system for reporting marine restoration outcomes include: reaching agreement on a framework that meets the needs of all users, …

We worked with Midtown Engagement Partners (MEPs), the City of Santa Fe, local design teams, and the Strategic Economics/Opticos team, among others, on a distributed model of public engagement, combining diverse methods to gather input from the public. Together, we organized listening and planning sessions, site visits, a block party and posolada, online conversations, and interactive planning exercises. This work revealed a common vision for belonging, culture, equitable development, and environmental and community health.

Emotional Villages In The Medieval Mediterranean: Territorial Language Of Emotional Expression, 644–1508 C.E., Eden Vigil Jan 2022

Emotional Villages In The Medieval Mediterranean: Territorial Language Of Emotional Expression, 644–1508 C.E., Eden Vigil

History ETDs

This thesis examines the concept of an emotional village as one that embodies territorial emotions. The emotions themselves are categorically defined based on modern conventions, but utilizes the author’s words to expose the fluidity of emotion language amongst cultures and traditions. My research presents emotional villages in four sections to expose these modalities of feeling amongst cultures. The first section looks at devotion, wonder, and reverence; the second, loss, grief, and nostalgia; the third, fear and anger; the fourth, disgust and hatred. The fifth section is dedicated to the emotional village that is medieval Jerusalem. Emotions are merely the language …

The Influence Of Maternal-Child Interactions During Early Child Development And The Impact On Anterior Cingulate Cortex Volumes, Sofia Markee, Dawn Novak, John Philips, Kati N. Baillie, Tiffany Emery, Jean Lowe

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day

Background: Studies investigating differences in regional brain volumes in children during early childhood are limited. Many theories suggest the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is at the center of the brain’s self-regulatory system playing a key role in learning and emotion. Our aim is to investigate the volume of the ACC identified with MRI and developmental outcomes in children at 18 months. We hypothesize the volume of the ACC will be larger in children who received more positive directing behaviors from their mothers during play and ACC volumes will be larger in children with higher cognitive and language scores as measured …

Medical Residency Milestones: Competencies In Informatics, Library, And Evidence-Based Practice, Deborah J. Rhue, Jonathan Eldredge

Publications

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) sets standards known as Milestones and monitors the progress of medical residents as they advance toward medical practice in their specialties. Health sciences librarians need to train medical residents in certain competency areas to help reach the Milestone standards. This project analyzed the Milestones related to informatics, library, and Evidence Based Practice (EBP) skills to identify core and optional library-related curricular elements that can be integrated into different medical specialty residencies.

The authors collected key competency documents from ACGME and from those specialties representing 2% or more of the residencies in the …

Covid-19 Pandemic Impact On Psychotropic Prescribing For Adults With Intellectual Disability: An Observational Study In English Specialist Community Services, D Naqvi, B Perera, S Mitchell, R Sheehan, R Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a disproportionate impact on people with intellectual disability (PwID). PwID are at higher risk of mental illness and receive psychotropic prescribing ‘off licence' also, to manage distress behaviour. The lockdown and reduction of multidisciplinary face-to-face appointments had an impact on care delivery, the recourse possibly being psychotropic prescribing. It is imperative to comprehend the influence the pandemic had on psychotropic prescribing patterns to enable future planning. Aims The aim was to understand the impact of the pandemic by comparing psychotropic prescribing patterns during the England lockdown with the prescribing patterns before lockdown in …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Biobanks are repositories of human biological samples and data. They are an important component of clinical research in many disease areas and often represent the first step toward innovative treatments. For biobanks to operate, researchers need human participants to give their samples and associated health data. In Ireland, research participants must provide their freely given informed consent for their samples and data to be taken and used for research purposes. Biobank staff are responsible for communicating the relevant information to participants prior to obtaining their consent, and this communication process is supported by the Participant Information Leaflets and Informed Consent …

The Multi-Actor Perspective Of Engagement On Social Media, Sara Shawky, Krzysztof Kubacki, Timo Dietrich, Scott Weaven

Plymouth Business School

Despite the known benefits offered by social media to create engagement in social marketing programs, scholars have highlighted the need for more evidence-based, practical, and measurable approaches to social media use in social marketing contexts. This netnographic study employed a four-level multi-actor engagement framework originally proposed by Shawky et al. to explore engagement in a single Facebook community. We identified social media measurement tools for assessing connections, interactions, and loyalty of multiple actors which will assist social marketing practitioners’ understanding of different actors’ interactions with the social media content, enabling them to maintain these actors’ levels of engagement, advance their …

Effectiveness Of General Practitioner-Delivered Nutrition Care Interventions On Dietary And Health Outcomes In Adults With Diet-Related Chronic Conditions: A Systematic Review Protocol, Kathryn E. Asher, Mari Somerville, Shelley Doucet, Alison Luke, Lauren Ball, Stephan U. Dombrowski, Mary Hickson, Richelle Witherspoon

School of Health Professions

Objective: This systematic review will evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition care interventions delivered by general practitioners (GPs) versus usual care or no care on dietary and health outcomes in adults with diet-related chronic conditions or risk states. Introduction: GPs are usually the first contacts for patients with diet-related chronic conditions in the healthcare system. While there is some evidence that GPs can be effective in delivering nutrition care for a number of outcomes, an update to the evidence is required as well as an examination of which components are associated with positive outcomes in order to inform future care. Inclusion …

Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang Jan 2022

Competing For Seafaring Labour: Social Security And Agency Employment In Chinese Shipping, Gang Chen, Lijun Tang

Plymouth Business School

This paper discusses one strategy that Chinese crewing agencies adopt to compete with eachother in the global seafarer labour supplying market. This strategy is related to Chineseseafarers’ social insurance participation. It shows that crewing agencies utilised a dualworkforce – ‘company-owned seafarers’ and ‘externally hired seafarers’. Externally hiredseafarers, though in precarious employment, are offered higher salaries in place of socialinsurance coverage. By contrast, company-owned seafarers are paid less, though enjoy socialinsurance arranged by agencies. This strategy serves to segment the seafarer labour market, conceal the level playing field, and help agencies recruit seafarers cost-effectively, though inviolation of labour rights. This paper argues …

A Case For Openness – Book Publishing And The Role Of Amazon, Antje Kreutzmann-Gallasch, Simone Schroff Jan 2022

A Case For Openness – Book Publishing And The Role Of Amazon, Antje Kreutzmann-Gallasch, Simone Schroff

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The presence of Amazon is ubiquitous, especially in the online bookstore and e-book market. The introduction of the “Kindle” further cemented Amazon’s dominant position and business model in the market, having negative implications for authors, publishers and consumers. Publishers have less control over setting the price to have access to Amazon’s customer base. This will affect the authors’ remuneration and attribution. On the other hand, Kindle users are locked-in consumers, limited to Amazon’s e-book offering. This not only affects consumer choice but also reinforces Amazon’s market power due to the significant network effects. The European Commission attempted to increase competition …

Background: Ongoing alcohol use is strongly associated with progressive liver damage and higher mortality in patients with alcohol- related liver disease (ArLD). Reduction in alcohol use is therefore the cornerstone of treatment to improve the long-term outcome of these patients. However, a large proportion of patients continue to use alcohol and do not access or engage with alcohol treatment services after a diagnosis of ArLD. We reviewed the literature on factors associated with ongoing alcohol consumption among patients with ArLD to identify barriers or facilitators to their accessing alcohol treatment. Methods: A search of MEDLINE and EMBASE was conducted using search …

Using Triple Oxygen Isotopes To Reveal The Origin And Evolution Of Mantle Eclogite, Catherine Mary Peshek Jan 2022

Using Triple Oxygen Isotopes To Reveal The Origin And Evolution Of Mantle Eclogite, Catherine Mary Peshek

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Triple oxygen isotope (TOI) measurements of mantle eclogite from the Orapa kimberlite pipe have reconstructed bulk rock '18O values from 4.587 to 9.542‰ (vs. VSMOW) and '17O from -0.075 to -0.044‰ (vs. VSMOW,  ~0.528). TOI values show increasing '18O with decreasing '17O, overlapping with modern measured altered oceanic crust. Orapa eclogite xenoliths with alkali enrichments show variable mantle-like and heavy 18O, consistent with subduction of seafloor altered basalt. Na# (Na/Na+Ca) in clinopyroxene for some xenoliths pairs with mantle-like oxygen, variable and extreme LREE enrichment, elevated Mg# and lower jadeite contents. These samples preserve records of eclogite melting, mantle interaction …

No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2022

No “Box To Be Checked”: Environmental Justice In Modern Legal Practice, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For nearly thirty years, environmental justice has been part of our civic conversation and included in the mission of federal agencies. But while public attention to environmental justice has waxed and waned over time, environmental justice principles have endured and developed into rules of law. This development may be expected to continue and accelerate with recent events such as the nationwide outcry after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, the disparate impacts of COVID-19 on people of color, and the express priorities of the Biden administration. This paper seeks to help legal practitioners and other interested parties comprehend …
