Radical Rhetoric And The Syrian Revolution: Toward A Telos Of Solidarity, Noor Ghazal Ghazal Aswad
Radical Rhetoric And The Syrian Revolution: Toward A Telos Of Solidarity, Noor Ghazal Ghazal Aswad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Transnational rhetorical scholarship has yet to enact solidarity with the subaltern. “Inclusionary” efforts have actively excluded what I term the “radical subject,” the subject revolting against repressive hegemonic forces to achieve liberatory change in society. As an intervention, this dissertation conceptualizes the Syrian revolution as a rhetorical performance which enacts a theory of its own agency and possibilities, an expression of a liberatory moment where radical subjects rose from under an authoritarian regime’s historic rule. Within this rhetorical performance, the radical subject serves as the chief protagonist, a subject whose rhetoric is informative of both practice and theory. The Syrian …
High School Teachers' Perceptions And Application Of Robert Stahl's Decision-Making Materials In The Social Studies Classroom, Alisha Milam
High School Teachers' Perceptions And Application Of Robert Stahl's Decision-Making Materials In The Social Studies Classroom, Alisha Milam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study investigated high school social studies teachers’ perceptions of Robert Stahl’s decision-making materials within their content area and the relevance of curricular implementation. The primary questions addressed in this study focused on high school social studies teachers’ perception of current instructional practices, inquiry-based learning, state standards, and national frameworks regarding content and classroom instruction. The participants included seven rural high school social studies teachers selected through two-stage random sampling. Participant selection was reduced to rural areas due to the overwhelmingly disproportionate number of rural districts in the state of study. However, to gain a diverse perspective from across the …
Mask On, F*Ck It, Mask Off: Assessing The Role That Hip-Hop Plays In The Identity Development Of Young Black Professionals, Re'sean James Jetson
Mask On, F*Ck It, Mask Off: Assessing The Role That Hip-Hop Plays In The Identity Development Of Young Black Professionals, Re'sean James Jetson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Young Black professionals are faced with unique challenges in navigating their ethnic and professional identities, especially in the workplace. They are underrepresented in high-status professional jobs and often assume they must adhere to behavioral and linguistic norms associated with the dominant culture in order to be accepted in predominately White workspaces. The process of adjusting one’s style of speech or behavior based on the social setting is known as code-switching. This study examined the experience of code-switching for young Black professionals in non-diverse workspaces with particular attention to the role of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop has served as a tool for identity …
Understanding Anger And Psychosocial Functioning In A Sample Of Post-9/11 Veterans Using Ecological Momentary Assessment, Rebecca J. Zakarian
Understanding Anger And Psychosocial Functioning In A Sample Of Post-9/11 Veterans Using Ecological Momentary Assessment, Rebecca J. Zakarian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Anger is an important aspect of the negative emotion associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and difficulties with anger regulation are implicated in more severe PTSD trajectories as well as associated problems such as aggression perpetration. Anger is also known to erode social relationships and is implicated in poorer psychosocial functioning and having fewer close relationships. From a diagnostic conceptualization, anger is included in both the hyperarousal symptom cluster (e.g. irritability and angry reactions) and the negative alterations in cognitions and mood symptom cluster (e.g. negative emotions like anger, fear, shame, etc). Although anger is included in the diagnostic symptoms …
Dyadic Differences In The Perception Of Stress-Related Reactions Among Black Youth With High Body Weights, Kaytryn Doreese Campbell
Dyadic Differences In The Perception Of Stress-Related Reactions Among Black Youth With High Body Weights, Kaytryn Doreese Campbell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Black youth with high body weights (BYHW; BMI ≥ 95th percentile) endure unique stressors that may contribute to psychopathology, but more research is needed on factors associated with fewer stress-related reactions among these youth. Utilizing linear regression modeling and controlling for youth BMIz scores, the current study examined how resilience and weight-related quality of life were associated with stress-related reactions as reported by 32 treatment-seeking BYHW (Mage = 14.19; MBMIZ = 2.59) and one of their primary caregivers (N = 64). Findings showed that dyadic differences exist in what BYHW and their caregivers perceive as associated with youth stress-related reactions. …
Longitudinal Examination Of Psychosocial Factors, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, And Urinary Albumin-To-Creatinine Ratio Trajectories Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Katherine Semenkovich
Longitudinal Examination Of Psychosocial Factors, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, And Urinary Albumin-To-Creatinine Ratio Trajectories Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Katherine Semenkovich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Vascular complications result in significant morbidity and mortality in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Certain measures such as the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio can assess risk for later diabetes complications by determining the amount of protein leaking from the kidneys (an early sign of kidney damage). Based on a conceptual framework, this study used growth curve and latent variable mixture modeling to evaluate individual and family characteristics, psychosocial responses, individual and family responses, and metabolic variables (hemoglobin A1c and DKA hospitalizations) that predict urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) trajectories over the span of three years. Adolescents (N = 142) 12-18 years old …
Voices From The Classroom: Perspectives Of Elementary Teachers On Teacher Absenteeism, And The Related Factors Of Leadership Behaviors And Teacher Preparation, Amanda Brabham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Employee absence can arise in any organization or institution; however, in education, teacher absenteeism place burdens on schools and hinders the ability of schools to provide quality and consistent instruction to students. Teacher absenteeism has been a topic of discussion in the West Tennessee study school district for many years. School and district leaders have pondered over what can be done to improve the attendance behaviors of teachers. Research asserts that teachers are the most important in-school determinant of student success, and for this reason, school and district leaders in the West Tennessee study district must gain an understanding of …
Operatic Becomings: A Narrative Exploration Of Singers' Personal And Professional Development, Joseph Phaten Dunn
Operatic Becomings: A Narrative Exploration Of Singers' Personal And Professional Development, Joseph Phaten Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Prior research has demonstrated that the highly competitive professional environment faced by musicians and music students can increase risk for a variety of mental health concerns. However, therapists know relatively little about this population, the stressors they face, or how musicians and music students navigate and make meaning of the diverse stressors they encounter personally and professionally. The present narrative inquiry (NI) study, explored the experiences of five advanced classical operatic trainees as they navigated diverse personal, professional, and mental health concerns while pursuing education and employment in this highly competitive discipline. Narrative analysis of collected interview data was grounded …
Social Support As A Moderator Between Maternal Mental Health And Child School Engagement Among Families Exposed To Adversity, Kari Nicole Thomsen
Social Support As A Moderator Between Maternal Mental Health And Child School Engagement Among Families Exposed To Adversity, Kari Nicole Thomsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
School engagement is a positive, malleable aspect of youth functioning. The present study examined the direct and interactive relations between social-ecological factors (i.e., maternal depression, maternal anxiety, youth social support) and youth school engagement among families exposed to adversity. Participants were 117 youths (Mage = 9.96, SD = 1.40; 51% female; 88.89% Black), and their female primary caregivers. Hierarchical linear regression modeling revealed a direct, positive relation between child social support and child school engagement. No direct relations were found between maternal anxiety or maternal depression and child school engagement. Social support moderated the relation between maternal anxiety and school …
Dworkin, Dignity, And The Body: Constructing A Critical, Carnal Legal Hermeneutic, Jackson Reese Faust
Dworkin, Dignity, And The Body: Constructing A Critical, Carnal Legal Hermeneutic, Jackson Reese Faust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation argues that an embodied legal subject is necessary to reorient law toward moral justice and describes how this subject alters the interpretation of legal texts. More specifically, it contends that humans’ mutual embodiment and institutionally-mediated vulnerability justifies basing adjudication on lived experience alongside—and given similar interpretive weight as—traditional legal texts. To justify this contention, it argues that Ronald Dworkin’s legal and political thought can be grounded by G.W.F. Hegel’s concept of “ethical life” (Sittlichkeit)—the integrated moral and political community—by dint of Dworkin’s distinctive account of dignity. It then uses this reading of Dworkin to propose a theory of …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among three psychosocial factors (i.e., Academic Grit, School Engagement, and Growth Mindset) and Academic Achievement among a cross-sectional sample of middle school students (N = 141). Participants were administered the Academic Grit Scale, Multi-Dimensional School Engagement Scale, and Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale via an online survey, and i-Ready Reading and Math benchmarks and student’s GPA assessed academic achievement. Factor analysis was used to confirm the measurement of these constructs, which resulted in a post-hoc measurement model combining indicators of Academic Grit with two indicators of School Engagement. Structural equation …
An Ethnographic Study Of Homelessness In Memphis During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tharwa Bilbeisi
An Ethnographic Study Of Homelessness In Memphis During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tharwa Bilbeisi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract This dissertation is an ethnographic study that examines the health beliefs of persons experiencing homelessness in Mid-town Memphis. It considers participants' social practices and environmental circumstances and analyzes how the global pandemic may have informed their health beliefs. Social determinants such as neighborhood safety, unemployment, racism, and transportation exacerbate issues of absenteeism, poor dietary/health-related habits, and further mistrust in health systems and public aid. Low “compliance,” a term used in health care to describe patient behaviors of non-adherence to prescribed medical treatments, is problematic in its connotation of intent or deliberateness without consideration of socioeconomics and other sociocultural matters. …
Effects Of Stimulus Rate And Periodicity On Auditory Cortical Entrainment And Their Relation To Speech Rhythms, Sara Momtaz Bokharaei
Effects Of Stimulus Rate And Periodicity On Auditory Cortical Entrainment And Their Relation To Speech Rhythms, Sara Momtaz Bokharaei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The neural mechanisms underlying rapid exogenous coding and the neural entrainment to auditory stimuli have been the subject of controversy. Using inter-trial phase-locking (ITPL) and phase-locking value (PLV) analyses applied to high-density human electroencephalogram (EEG) data, this dissertation investigated the degree to which the brain entrains to speech and non-speech (i.e., click) sounds and how changes in the rate and periodicity of the ongoing streams alter brain oscillation patterns. Temporal processing of cortico-acoustic tracking was investigated in N=24 normal young adults utilizing EEG time-frequency and source analyses that isolated neural activity stemming from both auditory temporal cortices. We manipulated the …

Speech Perception Performance In Ecological Noise, Bhanu Shukla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A variety of noises, including multi talker babble (MTB), speech spectrum noise (SSN), and several other environmental auditory scenes that had MTB as the dominant noise, have been used in research in the field of audiology to evaluate speech perception in individuals with normal hearing and hearing loss. These different noises and environmental auditory scenes have been employed independently to evaluate speech perception performance. Given that there are several sounds in the real world that might impair communication, the evaluation of speech perception accuracy should encompass all noises that a listener may encounter in typical conversation. Combining several auditory scenes …
Counseling At The Intersections: Comparing Trainee Multicultural Competency, Laura J. Condon
Counseling At The Intersections: Comparing Trainee Multicultural Competency, Laura J. Condon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study addressed facets of counselor trainee cultural competency (e.g., perceived attractiveness, assessments of clinical severity and treatment planning, self-efficacy) when working with Black bisexual clients as compared to White bisexual or Black or White heterosexual clients. Due to a paucity of literature addressing Black bisexual clients (Ghabrial & Ross, 2018; Muñoz-Laboy, 2019), complexity of client needs due to balancing intersecting identities (Mays et. al, 2002), and the discrimination clients with multiple diverse identities encounter (Castro & Carnassale, 2019), it is important to assess counselor trainees’ multicultural counseling competence with Black bisexual clients to increase the likelihood they receive competent …

The Genesis Project, Moriah Mcstay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
As this is a fictional novel, there is no abstract. A brief summary: THE GENESIS PROJECT is American Gods meets the biblical Book of Genesis, and it’s picking a fight with the U.S. Constitution. This is a novel about the myth of American history; the power of nature; and humanity’s connection to stories that help us explain ourselves. Contrasting the “realities” of American life–politics, news cycles, and social media–against our nation’s fascination with religion, faith, and the mystical, The Genesis Project makes the case that, just as humanity’s understanding of the Garden of Eden has shifted and changed over the …

Language Policy And Indigenous Language In The Linguistic Landscape Of Asunción, Paraguay, Perry Hardin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The field of Linguistic Landscape (LL) has been increasingly used as an effective way of researching, discovering, and better comprehending complex sociolinguistic phenomena. One focus of LL study is the way public displays of language in signs reflect and shape society’s beliefs about language, which in turn influences language practices. In addition, LL research frequently deals with the policies that attempt to influence what languages are used in signs. This study explores the multilingualism and language policy of Paraguay through a sociolinguistic lens by documenting the LL and investigating the factors that influence its construction in the capital city, Asunción. …
Educator Identity Development For International Graduate Teaching Assistants Through Community Of Practice: A Design Case, Jaclyn Joy Gish-Lieberman
Educator Identity Development For International Graduate Teaching Assistants Through Community Of Practice: A Design Case, Jaclyn Joy Gish-Lieberman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This design case provides a transparent tale of building an international graduate teaching assistant (IGTA) orientation as a virtual Community of Practice (VCoP) during the COVID-19 era. The design case is situated in an English as a Second Language Composition (ESLC) Program at a large midwestern university for new GTAs, both international and domestic. Studies show that IGTAs who do not fit the prototype of GTAs in predominately white institutions (PWI), face marginalization, damaging their sense of belonging and identity as legitimate educators. Their salient social identities as both multicultural and multilingual become oppressed as they attempt to develop their …
Alec Wilder's Sonata For Bass Trombone: An Arrangement For Chamber Winds And Rhythm Section, John Robert Hagan
Alec Wilder's Sonata For Bass Trombone: An Arrangement For Chamber Winds And Rhythm Section, John Robert Hagan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Twenty-first century trombonists are called upon to be versatile performers. Long gone are the days of stylistic specialization. And today, most professional trombonists can perform in settings ranging from symphony orchestras to jazz ensembles to other contemporary commercial music ensembles. But aside from brass quintets and homogenous ensembles, most chamber music ensembles, especially those with woodwinds, don’t include trombones. This arrangement of Alec Wilder’s Sonata for Bass Trombone not only expands the repertoire for solo bass trombone and chamber wind ensemble but does so in a way that draws connection to some of the composer’s most beloved works, the Octets …

A New Look At Student Engagement Theory: Describing The Role Social Media Plays In Student Engagement, Mary Katherine Tyler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The problem that this research will address is that the current generation of college students, Gen Z, are using social media and digital technology to connect with their peers, create community and engage with their university like no generation before them. In addition to this, student affairs professionals fall largely into the Millennial Generation or Gen X, who did not grow up as digital natives (Prensky, 2001) and thus have a very different relationship with social media. The purpose of this qualitative multiple descriptive case study research design, using the framework designed by Yin (2014), is to describe student engagement …

Anubis And The Embalming Scene: Tradition And Innovation In A New Kingdom Funerary Scene At Kom El-Shoqafa, Alexandria, Bethany Jensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Focusing on the scene of Anubis embalming the mummy in the main tomb at Kom el-Shoqafa in Alexandria, Egypt, this thesis demonstrates how it is both a continuation of the funerary motif that first appears in Dynasty 18 of the New Kingdom (ca. 1425 BC) and an innovative version unique to the early Roman period (first to second centuries AD). Background information regarding Alexandria, the site of Kom el-Shoqafa, and a description of the tomb are provided. This is followed by a history of the scene, its origins in Spell 151 of the Book of the Dead, and a comparison …
Allé Guru: Hip-Hop Uplift, Jared Lee Pillow
Allé Guru: Hip-Hop Uplift, Jared Lee Pillow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract: As a solo hip-hop rapper and a member of Gang Starr during the 1990s, Guru (born Keith Edward Elam) represented a unique uplift voice in a burgeoning New York hip-hop scene. Demonstrating an understanding of ongoing African American freedom struggles, Guru poetically rhymed and flowed knowledge of systematic oppression and historical strategies against it, particularly in relation to the late twentieth-century African American community. In examining his poetic lyrics, Guru stands as more than a rapper, but also as a late twentieth-century poet voicing real issues and solutions. As a result, Guru is worthy of serious consideration in not …
The Double Bass In Handel's Messiah: An Examination Of The Instrument's Role In The Continuo, Sean Timothy O'Hara
The Double Bass In Handel's Messiah: An Examination Of The Instrument's Role In The Continuo, Sean Timothy O'Hara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Double bassists face a particular conundrum in Handel’s Messiah—when exactly should they play? This dissertation will address this confusion and offer possible solutions. In order to arrive at conclusions, three areas will be examined: key manuscripts closely associated with Handel, critical performances given under the composer’s direction, and historical evidence related to the double bass in Handel’s time. Regarding manuscripts, Handel’s autograph manuscript and the copy that became his conducting score will be closely examined. As for critical performances, this dissertation will take an in-depth look at the 1742 Dublin premiere of Messiah, the 1749 revival at Covent Garden, and …
Imagining Identity Beyond The Fishbowl: A Framework For Using Ethnographic Texts For Children To Cultivate A Place Of Inclusion And Belonging, Jacklyn Boggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Bibliotherapy—the use of the literary arts for the purpose of healing—has been used by numerous professionals for a variety of reasons. Psychologists, social workers, educators, and health care professionals have specifically utilized works in the children’s genre as a tool for promoting dialogue with children around difficult topics, such as loss, trauma, oppression, self-abhorrence, and suffering. Children’s books can serve as vehicles for facilitating conversations and safe spaces of inclusion that invite them to explore the complexity of their identities and lives. Of course, not all texts are created equal, and thus this project aims to serve as a framework …
Exploring The Role Of Religious Beliefs And Practices On Family Language Policy, Saad Alamri
Exploring The Role Of Religious Beliefs And Practices On Family Language Policy, Saad Alamri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Earlier Family Language Policy (FLP) research has focused on ethnic identities, mobility, and transnationality, as well as, to a lesser extent, gender and familial kinship; few studies have focused primarily on religion as a factor in FLP processes. Religion is particularly important in the FLP of Muslim families who speak Arabic as a first or additional language, as many of the daily Islamic practices necessitate the use of Arabic. Therefore, this dissertation sets out to investigate the impact of religious beliefs and practices on the FLP of non-Arab Muslim families. I particularly focused on Pakistani expatriate/immigrant families raising their children …
The Music Composed For The Keyed Trumpet, Robert Warren Apple
The Music Composed For The Keyed Trumpet, Robert Warren Apple
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The keyed trumpet was the world’s first practical fully chromatic trumpet and was invented in the 1790s by adding keys to the natural trumpet. The best-known works composed for the keyed trumpet are Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos, which are two of the most beloved pieces in the trumpet’s modern concert repertory. Despite these concertos’ popularity, several misconceptions about the keyed trumpet, including that it had little music composed for it and was rarely employed, persist. My dissertation builds upon the work of earlier scholars and includes a catalog documenting 720 pieces with keyed trumpet of which 676 survive, with …
Tutorial Documentation For Software Developers: Evaluating The Impact Of A Supporting Technology Documentation On Learning New Technology, Greg Jordan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Software has become central to every part of modern life and supports everything from managing personal schedules to managing global supply chain systems. In creating new or updating existing software, software developers often need to incorporate new technology. When software developers learn new technology using tutorials, their experience with secondary technologies–the technologies that accompany or complement the new technology–can have an impact on the comprehension of the new technology being covered. Based on this understanding, I designed a mixed methods study focused on a group of software learning a new technology to examine the following questions: 1. Does prior knowledge …
No To Language-Based Discrimination: The Effect Of Multimedia, Perspective Taking, And Itas’ Exposure On Native Speakers’ Attitude Toward L1-Accented Speakers, Shima Farhesh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Linguistic stereotyping research posits that native speaker favor standard variety speakers which results in discrimination against non-native speakers (Rubin 2002, Kang & Rubin, 2009). However, it may be possible to improve native speaker attitudes towards accented speech, and through that, accented speakers. Research on improving native speakers’ (NSs) attitudes toward non-native speakers (NNSs) suggests that direct exposure through interpersonal contact (Kang et al., 2015) and indirect exposure may both decrease prejudice towards marginalized groups (Rani & Samuel, 2019). Little is known, however, about the relative effectiveness of different interventions such as video interventions (Multimedia group), intergroup contact through International Teaching …
The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey
The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
With the increase in online course enrollments each year, there is a continued examination of online course persistence, particularly in accelerated online courses. This examination of online course persistence has typically examined individual learner factors as contributors to persistence. However, research examining the institutional and pedagogical factors of persistence can continue to further understanding what factors lead to learner persistence decisions. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to examine to what extent, if any, community college learners’ perceived online course cognitive load and motivation predict persistence in an accelerated online course. The theoretical framework for this study …
