Sailors And Slaves: Authority, Mutiny, And The Politics Of Suppression, Regina Gallo Jan 2022

Sailors And Slaves: Authority, Mutiny, And The Politics Of Suppression, Regina Gallo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In 1628, the English Parliament demanded that King Charles I sign the Petition of Right, causing the English Civil War. This war led to laws that legitimized slavery and the impressment of Anglo sailors and left behind an insurrectionary ideology that American colonists adapted during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, this ideology inspired the Constitution and later inspired slave revolts, and sailor mutinies for civil liberties won during the Revolution. As the capitalist economy grew and ensnared the new nation, this ideology entered reformer communities. American law relied on lawyers, jurists, and politicians to balance liberty, property, and …

Social Ghosts Of The Domestic Sphere: The Haunting Presence Of The Monstrous Mother In Contemporary Fiction, Alicia Dvorak Jan 2022

Social Ghosts Of The Domestic Sphere: The Haunting Presence Of The Monstrous Mother In Contemporary Fiction, Alicia Dvorak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis argues that the numerous widespread fears about deviant domestic behavior that rose to prominence in Western nations during the post-World War II era can still be observed in contemporary fictional representations of what I term the “monstrous domestic”: when mothers and the domestic spaces that they occupy are depicted as “bad,” “evil,” or otherwise threatening. Using psychoanalytic, feminist, and monster theory, as well as sociocultural context, I examine four works that prominently display and condemn the monstrous domestic: Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959), Neil Gaiman’s Coraline (2002), Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook (2014), and Gillian Flynn’s …

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne Jan 2022

The Effect Of Focused Breathing On Response Inhibition And Perception Of Affective Words: A Behavioral And An Eeg Study, Emily Ahne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

When practiced over long periods of time (>16 weeks), mindfulness positively impacts inhibitory processing, in that as mindfulness exposure and experience increases, inhibitory processing is enhanced. Similarly, long-term mindfulness practice diminishes the impact of emotionally-valanced scenes. However recently, more work is underway on how brief mindfulness inductions impact these same outcomes. Across two online pilot studies (behavioral outcomes only) and one in-person experiment (behavioral and neuronal outcomes), how a brief focused-breathing induction impacts response inhibition and the perception of affective words was explored. Findings demonstrate that a 30-minute mindfulness induction produced a diminished Simon Effect, as well as faster …

The Myth Of Legal Realist Skepticism, Dan Priel Jan 2022

The Myth Of Legal Realist Skepticism, Dan Priel

All Papers

Here are some things everyone knows about the legal realists: They didn’t believe in legal rules, they thought—and demonstrated—that law is inherently indeterminate, and they taught us that it is the personality of the judge that decided cases. To the extent that they studied legal doctrine, it was in order to demonstrate its incoherence. This is why they “vociferously objected” to the Restatements. It is the victory of their ideas that killed the doctrinal legal treatise as a respectable form of scholarship in the United States. In addition to this jurisprudential radicalism, the legal realists were also politically radical. Their …
