خاتم حج مسيحي مزين في مشهد القيامة / A Christian Pilgrimage Ring With A Resurrection Scene, Yana Tchekhanovets
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
This paper presents a Byzantine–Early Islamic-period ring adorned with a Resurrection scene, which was recently discovered in salvage excavations the Giv’ati Parking Lot, Jerusalem. This ring is the first of its kind to be retrieved from a well-dated stratified archaeological context. It enables us to confirm the traditional dating of similar rings kept in museum collections and discuss their possible function in early Christian pilgrimage.
الراهب المُكبَّل من خربة المصانع / The Monk Of The Rings In Light Of The New Excavations From Khirbat El-Maṣani‘, Ramat Shelomo, Jerusalem, Zubair ‘Adawi
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Khirbat el-Maṣani‘ is located about 4 km northwest of Jerusalem, along a secondary road that led from Lod to Jerusalem via en-Nabi Samwil. The site includes the remains of a Byzantine-period triple-apsed church, which was part of a monastery or a pilgrims’ hostel. Abel had suggested that the church be identified as the New Church of Saint Zachary, built by Priest Sabinus. The site was surveyed several times in the past, including during the extensive Jerusalem Survey, and a limited excavation was conducted at the site by Gabi Mazor, exposing the facade of two of the apses. In 2017, a …
أرضيات فسيفساء، أواني وأثاث ليتورجي وأجزاء معمارية من دير بيزنطي في وادي قدرون/ وادي النار، القدس / Mosaic Floors, Liturgical Vessels And Furniture, And Architectural Sculpture From The Byzantine Monastery In Naḥal Qidron, Jerusalem, Lihi Habas
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Excavations in the Naḥal Qidron monastery recovered several colorful mosaics. A mosaic floor exhibing geometric interlaces populated by animals was uncovered in the church hall, and a mosaic floor depicting geometric and vegetal patterns was found in the vestibule. The monastery courtyard was paved with a crude white mosaic floor. These mosaics find parallels throughout the Holy Land, dating from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, in both secular and religious contexts. However, their pronounced connection with other mosaics in the vicinity of Jerusalem suggests that at least one mosaic workshop operated in the Jerusalem area. The Naḥal Qidron mosaics are …
النموذج الافتراضي للمباني الأموية عند سفح الحرم القدسي الشريف: التفسير الأثري والتاريخي / The Virtual Model Of The Umayyad Buildings At The Foot Of The Temple Mount And Its Surroundings: Archaeological And Historical Interpretation, Yuval Baruch
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
This paper reviews the main architectural and artistic findings discovered in excavations conducted in the Umayyad buildings at the foot of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. These buildings were reconstructed to house this unique architectural system. The buildings were built atop the remains of ancient monuments, most likely from the Byzantine period, as is especially evident in Building II. The buildings’ plans adhere to several architectural principles: a closed architectural system, including four or five buildings separated by a system of streets; all buildings relate to the Temple Mount and are connected to it via the restored Temple Mount gates …

The archaeological record pertaining to the Abbasid period in the south of Jerusalem has considerably increased in recent years with archaeological research gradually focusing on this period. The large-scale salvage excavations in the Giv‘ati Parking Lot, south of Ḥaram el-Sharif, exposed extensive Abbasid-period remains that shed new light on the function of this area at the time, filling in the gap left by the paucity of historical sources.

About 300 m north of the Mar-Elias Monastery, near an ancient water reservoir, “Bir Kadismo” on the British survey map, three salvage excavations were conducted on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority in 1992, 1997 and 2000; another excavation was undertaken in 1999, in collaboration with the University of Athens and representatives of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Remains of a church with a unique octagonal plan were discovered, as well as buildings identified as the monastery to which the church belonged. The plan comprises three concentric octagons surrounding a rock. The inner and middle octagons were separated by …

A salvage excavation in Jerusalem helped confirm previous suggestions to locate the twelfthcentury butchery mentioned in historical sources along Via Templi (today, the Street of the Chain). Our survey of the site enabled characterization and phasing of the various functions within this institution and its plausible dating. Based on the results of the technological and architectural analyses, we can establish that the twelfth-century alley, whose location was previously unknown, is located to the north of the Street of the Chain. This alley may be identified with the Furriers Alley, which was connected to the Furriers Street (ruga Parmentariorum, Street of …

Following the discovery of a Mamlūk public bathhouse and a vaulted hall to the south of the Cotton Market in the Old City of Jerusalem, this paper proposes a reevaluation of the urban fabric nearest to the focal point of Islamic Jerusalem—Ḥaram el-Sharīf. We argue that the building project previously considered to be accomplished under the supervision of the district governor, Saif al-Dīn Tankiz, and financed by Sultan al-Nāṣir Muḥammad b. ترميم أسوار مدينة القدس / The Conservation Of Jerusalem’S City Wall, Avi Mashiah
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The Old City wall is one of the most important cultural heritage assets of Jerusalem. It is without doubt the most prominent monument in the city’s urban landscape, greatly influencing the development of the modern city. In 2005, several stones of the Old City wall were detached and fell into the schoolyard of the Collטge des Frטres. Consequently, the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department undertook a survey to collect data concerning the physical condition of the wall. The survey results pointed to a variety of physical problems along the entire length of the City Wall. Following this, in 2006, the …

القدس وضواحيها خلال العصور الحجرية / Prehistoric Sites In Jerusalem And Its Environs, Hamoudi Khalaily, Omry Barzilai, Ofer Marder
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Until recently, there was little information concerning prehistoric occupation in Jerusalem and its environs in the Judean Mountains. Information was scanty, not because there were no such sites, but rather due to the policy pursued by archaeologists, who focused on biblical sites mentioned in the holy scriptures and in ancient documents. This situation prevailed until the 1930s, when a comprehensive survey of prehistoric sites was undertaken by French archaeologist Rene Neville. In addition, many prehistoric sites were uncovered in the early 1990s, following intensive development works and construction throughout modern Jerusalem. This paper reviews the main sites, uncovered or re-excavated, …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
The Late Pottery Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods in the vicinity of Jerusalem and the Judean Hills were almost unknown until the last two decades. As of then, following several salvage excavations and research undertaken in the area, much information has been gathered and summarized. It is noteworthy that until recently, the Late Pottery Neolithic and the Chalcolithic cultures, spanning the Wadi Rabah culture and the Ghassulian Chalcolithic, were known only from small-scale excavations, such as in the northern regions of the country (including the Jordan Valley), the Besor basin and some pre-Ghassulian remains at Teleilat Ghassul in Jordan. This paper …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
This paper presents new finds unearthed during the renewed excavations at the site of the Giv‘ati Parking Lot in the City of David, Jerusalem. The finds span the late Iron Age and the Early Hellenistic period, shedding new light on the nature and location of the city during these periods. The finds testify to the importance of the western slope of the City of David ridge in the urban development. The allocation of water from the Giḥon Spring to the Siloam Pool reduced the importance of the inhospitable eastern slope. As a result, the western slope was altered for public …

الرواق المعمد الملكي في جبل الهيكل: مقترح إعادة تصور مخطط الإعمار / Herod’S Royal Portico On The Temple Mount: A Reconstruction, Orit Peleg-Barkat
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
One of King Herod’s most ambitious projects was the Stoa Basileios, built on the southern flank of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and described in detail by Flavius JosephusA (J 15.411−416). This Royal Portico—Herod’s often unrecognized contribution to the Temple Mount complex—exhibited, more than any of his other projects, his fondness of architectural innovation and his great power. The construction of the Royal Portico involved the expansion of the Temple Mount beyond the natural topography of Mount Moriah by means of earthen fills and vaults supported by massive enclosure walls. Herod invested considerable effort in the decoration of the Royal …
انعكاس صورة القدس من الفترات القديمة في عملات البلاد المقدسة / The Reflection Of Jerusalem In The Ancient Coins Of The Land Of Israel, Yoav Farhi
Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Many of the coins minted in the Land of Israel in ancient times bear various depictions related to Jerusalem, directly or indirectly, including names and symbols. These coins were minted mainly in Jerusalem and in Judea, beginning in the Persian period and up until the Crusader period. This study presents coins that were either minted in Jerusalem, or coins whose minting place is still in doubt—all exhibiting a strong connection to Jerusalem. The coins were minted by Jews, pagans, Christians and Muslims; they are a primary source of information and as such, reflect contemporary, firsthand knowledge. The coins are presented …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
In 2005–2010, large-scale archaeological excavations were conducted in the northwestern part of the Western Wall Plaza in the Old City of Jerusalem. The excavation area (1.5 dunams) lies some 100 m west of the Temple Mount, at the foot of a high bedrock cliff that extends from north to south, today separating the Jewish Quarter from the Western Wall Plaza. Today, the Western Wall Heritage Center stands on site, and the archaeological remains are preserved in its basement. The excavation area is located on the axis of el-Wad (Ha-Gai) Street, which passed here until 1967. The street, connecting the Damascus …

Cornerstone: Journal of Archaeological Sites (حجر الزاوية)
Since its discovery and documentation in the nineteenth century, Wilson’s Arch—the final arch along a stone-built bridge known as the “Great Causeway”—has been a focal point of discussion concerning Jerusalem’s urban development and the access to the most central feature in the city’s landscape, the Temple Mount. This paper presents the results of three years of excavation beneath the arch, where eight strata were exposed, ranging in date from the Hasmonean until the Ottoman period. These finds are discussed in light of two main issues: the construction date of Wilson’s Arch; and the second-century CE small theater-like structure and its …

For over a century and a half, segments of Jerusalem’s Early Roman-period street network have been uncovered in excavations in the city, particularly the street that wended its way from the southernmost gate of the city, near Siloam Pool, to the Temple Mount. The importance of this street is evident from its dimensions, as well as from the quality of its construction, which undoubtedly required expansive workforce and skilled laborers and craftsmen. Based on archaeological and historical data, the establishment of the street has variously been attributed to the Herodian period, the reign of Herod the Great, or the days …

Jerusalem always posed a challenge to scholars, being a sacred city to the three monotheistic religions, who were active here since the dawn of time. Although excavations conducted in the city were either restricted or limited by endless obstacles, they still yielded meaningful data concerning its various historical chapters. Epigraphic evidence, as well as data accumulated from the growing number of archaeological excavations, were thoroughly investigated to unveil the nature of the Roman polis, Aelia Capitolina, which was founded by Hadrian on the ruins of Jerusalem. This paper analyzes the accumulated archaeological data pertaining to the layout of the Roman …

Fashion And Sustainability: Consumption And Shared Responsibility, Jie Gao Fowler, Timothy Reisenwitz, Rongwei Chu
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Indulgence in fashion has been indispensable in modern societies, as it is a crucial device for self-image and identity construction. With the advanced technology and globalization of production, the fashion industry has skewed towards fast fashion, making the latest trends available to mass consumers at affordable prices. This research aims to examine how Chinese consumers perceive sustainable consumption in the context of fashion. We endeavor to explore the factors that influence the engagement of sustainable consumption. This study aims not to argue whether sustainable fashion should mobilize or replace the current fashion system but to provide evidence on consumers' perception …
Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen
Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen
Dissertations
Throughout his life, Sir Isaac Newton was deeply dedicated to the science of decoding biblical apocalyptic writings. To understand and appreciate Newton's prophetic scheme, it will be advantagous to have a certain grasp of what sources and ideas might have influenced him. No comprehensive study before this one has helped us see Newton from that perspective. A survey of the development of canonical apocalyptic hermeneutic and interpretation, beginning before the time of Christ and ending with Newton, shows that four distinct systems of hermeneutics had developed by that time. Historicism was the earliest and the preferred system among Protestants until …
