The Effects Of A Video Self-Analysis Package On Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Of Behavior-Specific Praise, Janet Vanlone Ph.D., Jennifer Freeman Ph.D., Brandi Simonsen Ph.D., Susannah Everett Ph.D., George Sugai Ph.D., Sara Whitcomb Ph.D.

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

This study used a single-subject, multiple baseline across participants research design to explore the effects of a multi-component intervention on pre-service teachers’ use of behavior-specific praise (BSP). The intervention consisted of explicit instruction and modeling of the skill, followed by on- going video self-analysis, self-monitoring, and performance feedback. Participants (n=4) were undergraduate senior teacher education students who were completing their student teaching semester. Results indicate improvements in BSP rates across all four student teachers, and participants found the intervention to be socially valid. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Expanding Statutes Of Limitations For Sex Crimes: Bad Public Policy, Michael Vitiello Jan 2022

Expanding Statutes Of Limitations For Sex Crimes: Bad Public Policy, Michael Vitiello

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

The Victims’ Rights Movement has been one of the most consequential political forces in the United States over the past fifty-plus years. It has scored major legislative victories across the country. Every state and the federal government have adopted major laws advanced by the movement. After years of expanding prison populations, many policymakers and scholars have begun to question the wisdom of many of the movement’s legislative victories.

Despite current pushback against the movement, the movement and members of the public are pushing for the elimination or dramatic extensions of statutes of limitations for sex offenses and child-sex offenses. Such …

Playful Rebellion: The Anarchic Clown And Pushing The Boundaries Of Contemporary Theatre, William Browning Jan 2022

Playful Rebellion: The Anarchic Clown And Pushing The Boundaries Of Contemporary Theatre, William Browning

Theses and Dissertations

In the many decades since live theatre began certain rules, conventions, and norms took hold. These conventions would change over the years but as these customs were formed there were always those who pushed back against the hegemony. There were always figures, people, and organizations that rebelled against the status quo and wished to push the boundaries of the theatre. This is where the anarchic clown enters the fray. Those who wish to push the boundaries of theatre have existed since its creation, but the anarchic clown is a specific form of rebel. The anarchic clown wishes to break the …

Udl: Practicing What We Preach, Peter E.L. Temple Jan 2022

Udl: Practicing What We Preach, Peter E.L. Temple

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of UDL in a special education program’s coursework and analyze how it affects college students outcomes beyond their classrooms. Past research has suggested that UDL has been increasingly used in college-level coursework design, and courses designed with UDL have higher reports of college student achievement. Based on the principles of UDL and andragogy, this study identified four central research questions. Specifically, a small qual/large quant mixed-method research design was used to investigate instructor utilization of the UDL principles, teacher candidate corroboration of UDL elements in their coursework, and an exploration …

Facilitating Equitable Access And Retention For Underrepresented Students At The University Of Mary Washington, Michael K. Abelson, Alvin R. Bryant, Marra Hvozdovic

Doctor of Education Capstones

Higher education institutions are facing increasing pressure to find new ways to attract, retain, and graduate the diverse populations of college students. As a result, colleges and universities need to adapt to the changing demographics of students who benefit from more sustained and engaged forms of support that are responsive to their specific social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This sequential mixed methods study seeks to understand the ways in which the University of Mary Washington serves its underrepresented students in order to develop strategies to enhance the recruitment and retention of Black, Hispanic/Latinx, low-income, and first-generation college students. Building on …

Sharing Vision For Shared Spaces: Mobile Immersive Planning And Community-Led Design Of Green Spaces In Richmond’S Southside, Maria T.E. Dougherty Jan 2022

Sharing Vision For Shared Spaces: Mobile Immersive Planning And Community-Led Design Of Green Spaces In Richmond’S Southside, Maria T.E. Dougherty

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

This plan seeks to demonstrate the potential of immersive technologies, specifically augmented reality, in strengthening public engagement and enabling the collaborative, community led design of local green spaces.

Community engagement, while now a focal point of urban planning education, is still implemented in uneven strategies that often further distance the public from the process and understanding of city vision; new paradigms of outreach and community-government knowledge sharing must be explored to overcome common constraints of time, expertise, and language that prevent public participation in projects that directly impact their health. Immersive urban planning offers a way to bring people into …

Growing Small: Citizen Preferences For New Development In Highland County, Virginia, And The Town Of Monterey, Charles F. Wilson Jan 2022

Growing Small: Citizen Preferences For New Development In Highland County, Virginia, And The Town Of Monterey, Charles F. Wilson

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

“Growing Small: Citizen Preferences for New Development in Highland County, Virginia and the Town of Monterey” is a plan by Charles Wilson for Highland County (“Highland”) as they reconsider the future of the Town of Monterey (“Monterey”). Highland is a rural county in western Virginia at the intersection of U.S. Routes 250 and 220. In the Summer of 2021, a new Family Dollar was issued permits to demolish an historical lodging facility and construct a new store—just a few buildings away from an existing Dollar General. This was not without controversy, but ultimately prompted reflection amongst community members for how …

Bloodshed, Baptism, Beer: Racial Capitalism And Settler Colonialism On The Medieval Baltic, Nicholas Salvato Jan 2022

Bloodshed, Baptism, Beer: Racial Capitalism And Settler Colonialism On The Medieval Baltic, Nicholas Salvato

Geography Honors Projects

Scholarly and popular usage of the term “racial capitalism” has increased exponentially over the past decade, but the validity and implications of its use remain hotly contested. The late Cedric Robinson is the undisputed popularizer of this phrase and is referenced widely by both the slogan’s detractors and proponents. Despite this, little work has been done to engage with the core of his argument about racial capitalism: that capitalism is inalienably racial due to the racialism of the medieval European societies that spawned it. Debates over Robinson’s ideas have thus disregarded the substance of his deployment of the phrase and …

The Spicy Girls: Writings On The Lived Experiences Of Latinas As The Exotic "Other.", Nina M. Lopez Jan 2022

The Spicy Girls: Writings On The Lived Experiences Of Latinas As The Exotic "Other.", Nina M. Lopez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The Other in mainstream U.S. society—in this case, the Latino Other—faces oppressive forces in the journey to find belonging. Latinos are marked by stereotypes, regardless of whether such stereotypes have a factual foundation. Latinas specifically are labeled as submissive servants, maids, or nannies. On the other end of the spectrum, Latinas are exotic and enticing sexual beings that must satisfy white men’s fetishes and lechery. Through this thesis, I will explore what Latina women face as an Other that is paradoxically both rejected and desired and evokes aversion as well as awe. In this creative thesis, in creative nonfiction, poetry, …

Idyllic History: The Role And Agency Of Women And Religion In Contemporary Bollywood, Kushma Singh Jan 2022

Idyllic History: The Role And Agency Of Women And Religion In Contemporary Bollywood, Kushma Singh

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent of this thesis is to explore the directorial choices made by Ashutosh Gowariker, in his film Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, in his films Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018), in order to evaluate the representation of women and the Muslim religion. Through use of mise en scene, I discuss lighting choices, visual display and use of color and how these elements create and support the stories Bhansali and Gowariker have chosen. I also rely on the recorded history of the time periods as well as the literature to contextualize the films.

How Screendance Embraces What Cannot Be Done On Stage, Maya Reddy Jan 2022

How Screendance Embraces What Cannot Be Done On Stage, Maya Reddy

Theatre and Dance Honors Projects

Due to the recentness of the field of dance filmmaking, little research exists on the difference between dance films designed to be watched as films (referred to as screendance) and dance videography (videos of performances created to be viewed by a live audience). This paper contends that what separates screendance from dance videography is the unique appeal screendance has for the viewer. Through the use of instantaneous location changes or inaccessible locations, unusual camera perspectives (such as a birds’ eye shot) that allow the viewer to feel as if they or the dancers are defying gravity, and technology-mediated changes to …

A Narrative Review And Longitudinal Data Analysis Method To Evaluate The Association Between Head And Neck Cancer And Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Toan Le Jan 2022

A Narrative Review And Longitudinal Data Analysis Method To Evaluate The Association Between Head And Neck Cancer And Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Toan Le

Biomedical Engineering

The pathophysiological mechanisms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and head and neck cancers (HNCs) have not been fully investigated. Currently, investigating the relationship between HNCs and OSA is incomplete due to the restriction of histological, molecular, and clinical evidence. In this research, the first section reviews the common course of therapy in patients with HNCs and OSA, the causal relationship and association between HNCs and OSA, and the scope of statistical methods used to investigate the association between HNCs and OSA. According to the observation from the literature review, more rigorously designed studies with longitudinal data collection should be considered. …

Patent Reality Checks: Eliminating Patents On Fake, Impossible And Other Inoperative Inventions, Jorge L. Contreras Jan 2022

Patent Reality Checks: Eliminating Patents On Fake, Impossible And Other Inoperative Inventions, Jorge L. Contreras

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The recent assertion of patents originally held by Theranos, the defunct blood analysis company whose founders are under federal indictment for fraud, highlights the existence of patents that might claim non-existent or inoperative inventions. While such patents may ultimately be subject to validity challenges in court, their issuance nevertheless has harmful effects on markets and innovation. I propose several administrative and legislative measures directed toward the elimination of patents claiming inoperative inventions including (1) increasing USPTO efforts to detect potentially inoperable inventions, (2) heightening examination requirements, including a certification of enablement, for certain inventions, (3) enabling greater public input into …

Balance And Standardization: Implications For Competition And Antitrust Analysis, Justus Baron, Jorge L. Contreras, Pierre Larouche Jan 2022

Balance And Standardization: Implications For Competition And Antitrust Analysis, Justus Baron, Jorge L. Contreras, Pierre Larouche

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Most technical standards development organizations (SDOs) have adopted internal policies embodying “due process” criteria such as openness, balance of interests, consensus decision making, and appeals. Unlike other aspects of SDO governance, relatively little scholarly research has considered the history, scope, and interpretation of SDO balance requirements. Likewise, existing case law and agency guidance offer little assistance in understanding precisely how these balance principles translate into specific antitrust requirements that apply to standards development. Given the absence of specific guidance on the meaning and implications of balance requirements for SDOs under the antitrust laws, it is necessary to review the development …

The Use Of Rhetorical Frames To Create Hope During Wars And Genocides: The Case Of The Yezidi Women, Ezzat Haider Jan 2022

The Use Of Rhetorical Frames To Create Hope During Wars And Genocides: The Case Of The Yezidi Women, Ezzat Haider

Communication

Scholars referred to the importance of hope communication during natural disasters. However, we rarely applied hope to the case of wars and genocides. This study investigates how women talk to their captors during wars, and genocides might help to create more hope. I applied Kenneth Burke’s comic frame to the narrative stories of the Yezidi women to investigate the process of building hope in their dialogues with their captors. After identifying texts and analyzing them, I learned that there is a significant connection between the comic frame and the process of building hope during wars and genocides. Besides the comic …

Study design: The study design is a retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To compare patient-reported outcomes between patients with mild versus moderate-to-severe myelopathy following surgery for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).

Summary of background data: Recent studies have demonstrated that decompression for CSM leads to improved quality of life when measured by patient-reported outcomes. However, it is unknown if preoperative myelopathy classification is predictive of superior postoperative improvements.

Materials and methods: A retrospective review of patients treated surgically for CSM at a single institution from 2014 to 2015 was performed. Preoperative myelopathy severity was classified according to the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association …

The Case Against Summary Eviction Proceedings: Process As Racism And Oppression, Andrew Scherer Jan 2022

The Case Against Summary Eviction Proceedings: Process As Racism And Oppression, Andrew Scherer

Articles & Chapters

This Article argues that because of the many ways in which summary eviction proceedings privilege landlords and disadvantage tenants, their very structure is patently unfair. Moreover, because of the racialized nature of landlord-tenant relations, the summary eviction process perpetuates a race-based power imbalance and is structurally racist. This Article explains why the time has come to dispense with the use of the shortcut summary eviction process. Summary eviction proceedings–truncated and expedited exceptions to normal civil process—were first devised for eviction cases in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by state legislatures comprised of white male property owners who were …

“When Will The Time Finally Come When There Will Only Be Humans”: An Unknown Letter From Beethoven To Heinrich Von Struve, Julia Ronge

The Beethoven Journal

Transcription, translation, and discussion of a recently discovered letter from Ludwig van Beethoven to Heinrich von Struve from 1795. In the letter, Beethoven expresses a yearning for a time when there are only humans, without distinctions of rank and class. This sentiment accords with Schiller’s ode An die Freude, which Beethoven set to music more than once.

Economic Benefits Of Precision Agricultural Technologies, Mohsina Jahan Jan 2022

Economic Benefits Of Precision Agricultural Technologies, Mohsina Jahan

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The purpose of this research was to build a model of profitability that can be used by individual farmers to calculate the net benefits of using precision agricultural technologies on their farms. Three case farms were selected. Partial budgeting analysis is used to calculate the net profit effect of adopting precision agricultural technology bundles. Two scenarios were compared: farms adopting precision agricultural technologies and farms not adopting. Revenues and costs that differ between the two scenarios are included in the model. A six-step process was employed and @Risk was used to account for risk. Results show that adopting PA is …

Modification Of Diglycidyl Ether Of Bisphenol-A Epoxy Primer For Multi-Substrate Application, Gwendorlene Chea

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Traditional vehicles and aircraft have consisted primarily of steel and aluminum alloys which due to their density, has resulted in various logistic problems including transportation, maneuverability, fuel efficiency. These hindrances have led to a major increase in the incorporation of composites material into this equipment. As the use of these composite increases, multi-substrate coating systems that can provide adequate corrosion protection to metal components, as well as superior adhesion and flexibility to the composites, are needed. The goal of this work is the modification of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy coating systems for improved flexibility and adhesion for the development …

Welcome To The (Writing Program) Archives: Making A Case For Writing Program Material Curation, Benjamin Michael Pitkin

English

With this project, I examined archival documents from the North Dakota State University First-Year Writing Program that were created by a previous writing program administrator, Amy Rupiper Taggart, with the goal of reviewing and understanding the materials through the lens of writing program administration, organizing them using archival theories and concepts, documenting and displaying that organization through the use of a finding aid, then bringing together the fields of archival theory and writing program administration to make recommendations. Through the process of exploring the materials a number of key findings emerged, and these led directly into my considerations and recommendations …

The Not-So-Universal Experience: A Content Analysis Of Regional And National Secondary And Postsecondary Standards For Writing, Vanessa Anne Rickertsen Jan 2022

The Not-So-Universal Experience: A Content Analysis Of Regional And National Secondary And Postsecondary Standards For Writing, Vanessa Anne Rickertsen

English

In this paper, I analyze six sets of high school and college standards and outcome statements on students writing to identify how expectations of students writing vary in their respective educational levels. I include local samples from North Dakota and Minnesota as well as examples at the national level. Utilizing content analysis, I identify frequently used terminology in these statements to uncover trends in how college-level writing is envisioned through the standards and outcomes. Through this analysis, I explore how the terminology used in standards and outcomes frame writing and how these pictures of writing from the high school perspective …

Identity & Activism: Helping Educators Understand Intersectionality & Cultivate Intersectional Acceptance Through Young Adult Literature, Meghan Anna Devries Stinar Jan 2022

Identity & Activism: Helping Educators Understand Intersectionality & Cultivate Intersectional Acceptance Through Young Adult Literature, Meghan Anna Devries Stinar

English

The issue I address is intersectionality in K-12 education. To address this issue, the purpose of this paper is to identify intersectionality, explore ways to help educators understand and accept intersectionality, and then bring the new knowledge into their classrooms. This will be done by the creation of a continuing education course using Young-Adult and Middle-Grade literature and appropriate supplemental materials on identity, activism, and intersectionality. The primary goals are to eliminate a color-blind approach to teaching and to showcase rich diverse texts that educators can learn from and bring into their classrooms.

Indigenous Ecocriticism And The Relationships Between Humans And Nature In Catherine Knutsson’S Shadows Cast By Stars, Kerri Nicole Nelson Jan 2022

Indigenous Ecocriticism And The Relationships Between Humans And Nature In Catherine Knutsson’S Shadows Cast By Stars, Kerri Nicole Nelson

English

In the midst of the climate crisis, Young Adult dystopian literature offers a glimpse of the possible dark futures in store for all of us. Yet Indigenous Young Adult literature revises the natural world not as the enemy of the survival of human beings, but as a possible ally. In Cassandra Knutsson’s Shadows Cast by Stars, a plague is raging and Indigenous blood is key to human survival. Through her journey to save her community, Cassandra demonstrates how she builds a more positive relationship with nature. By offering alternative possibilities for how to treat and interact with nature, Shadows Cast …

A Zoomable Assessment: Navigating The Ecologies Of Writing Program Assessment, Matthew Warner Jan 2022

A Zoomable Assessment: Navigating The Ecologies Of Writing Program Assessment, Matthew Warner

English

This dissertation project explores the potential for using an inferential statistics test (t-tests) within an existing writing program assessment design. The purpose of using inferential statistics is to provide several perspectives on a data set collected using the existing assessment design thereby improving what a writing program administrator can learn about the program. To demonstrate the use of statistical tests, I selected as a variable of interest participation in an international collaboration, the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP). Based on this variable, I asked, can inferential statistics identify whether participation in TAPP created a difference in student portfolio scores for …

Nostalgia For The 24th Century: How Nerd Billionaires Use Star Trek For Self-Promotion, Kurt Eggers Jan 2022

Nostalgia For The 24th Century: How Nerd Billionaires Use Star Trek For Self-Promotion, Kurt Eggers

English

This paper examines how tech industry leaders, who I dub “nerd billionaires,” use references to Star Trek (ST) as a way to connect with the positive impression fans have of its utopian world. I show how they use ST to imply that their business interests serve to benefit, and potentially save, humanity. My study provides background on ST’s utopia and uses Pierre Bourdieu's Field Theory to demonstrate why ST at first appears incompatible with the goals of big business. By applying post-Marxist critical theory to ST media, I examine ST’s ideological implications and analyze why ST has proven to be …
