Child Exit Types And Permanency Outcomes In Foster Care As Correlated To Casa Involvement, Grace Elizabeth Hill May 2022

Child Exit Types And Permanency Outcomes In Foster Care As Correlated To Casa Involvement, Grace Elizabeth Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to identify correlations between Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) activities and exit outcomes for children in foster care. Previous research on the impact of CASA has been inconclusive and offered mixed findings, so this study sought to build off of previous research while also exploring new areas of research that have not yet been investigated. Big Country CASA’s database, Optima, was utilized to retrieve data on cases that closed during the 2021 fiscal year (September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021). This yielded a sample size of 75 cases. Through an analysis of these cases to test …

Cuban Exiles In Key West During The Ten Years' War, 1868-1878, Antonio Rafael De La Cova

Florida Historical Quarterly

The upheaval of the Cuban Ten Years' War (10 October 1868-10 February 1878) prompted the largest number of refugees fleeing the island to settle ninety miles away in Key West, Florida, the southernmost point of the United States. Although the expatriates transformed the physical landscape of the coral and limestone reef and modified its social, economic, and political order, there has been no demographic study or precise statistics on the Cubans in Key West during that decade. Likewise, accurate statistical data is lacking for Cubans in the United States throughout the nineteenth century. In 1870, Key West had the second …

Florida Historical Quarterly

In April 1767, a young woman named Miss Row married a man who had proposed to her several times over the past year and a half despite the fact that he was not the same man with whom she had engaged in a torrid affair in British East Florida.1 When Miss Row married William Gerard De Brahm, a German who recently had been appointed as Surveyor General of the Southern Colonies, it ended a tumultuous period in her life that had begun when she immigrated to East Florida sometime between late 1764 and early 1766. 2 Within a few months …

Service Quality Of Banks: Perception Of Customers Of Tier 2 Cities, Sabeeha Fatma

Management Dynamics

Customer retention has become a Herculean task in today's turbulent business environment. The situation has often been compared with a bucket in which water is being filled but the problem is that the bucket has got a hole in the bottom, thus although the bucket is getting filled, water is percolating out as well. The condition is even more difficult in service sector, where the main driver of customer retention, quality is hard to define and measure. India has witnessed many changes in last few decades. Opening of economy was one such turning point in history of India. It affected …

Farmers Markets And Social Cohesion In A Post-Covid-19 World, Daniel Falknor Apr 2022

Farmers Markets And Social Cohesion In A Post-Covid-19 World, Daniel Falknor

Masters Projects

The sense of belonging to a community, or social cohesion, is established in food spaces enabled by three separate and unique mechanisms: proximity, frequency, and interactions. This study looks specifically at the Fulton Street Farmers Market in Grand Rapids and the effects the COVID-19 pandemic had on the social benefits derived from the mechanisms of social cohesion, in an attempt to identify and discover new ways to leverage social cohesion in food spaces. Three populations were identified at the farmers market: customers, vendors, and market staff. Surveys and informal interviews provided evidence that proximity to and within the market, higher …

Stripping Down Sexual Scripts: A Sexual Analysis Of Female-Authored Novels From Time's "100 Must-Read Books Of 2019", Brenna L. Hagan

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Most research on sexual content in the media has focused on visual media such as television and film, often overlooking novels. Likewise, research studies on sexual content have not studied the role of authorship. The pattern of accepted sexual scripts in novels, particularly those written by male authors, and the impact that these scripts have on the reader’s understanding of sexuality and sexual behaviors merits further research. This study analyzed sexual content in eight female-authored literary fiction novels from Time’s “100 Must-Read Novels of 2019.” Results found that fiction novels depict a plethora of sexual behaviors. Across the eight books, …

Proposing Guidelines To Upgrade The Open Public Spaces In The Informal Settlements, Lena Hosni, Ayman Afify, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Informal Settlements have expanded rapidly in the last fifty years and have kept rising. With rapid population expansion has come an increase in haphazard urbanisation and informal settlements, frequently referred as slums. Defined as a settlement that was formed in an unplanned and uncontrolled way, which means they are mostly unrecognized. Unfortunately, focusing on the problem of current challenges in informal settlements, on the socio-cultural and environmental levels, which are facing a massive shift in the quality of life in these sites, this is reflected in urban fragmentations, social and infrastructures are lacking, service systems that have become progressively inefficient …

The Effects Of Career Commitment, Distress, And Persistence On Academic Success Among Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Kimberly D. Kennel Mar 2022

The Effects Of Career Commitment, Distress, And Persistence On Academic Success Among Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Kimberly D. Kennel

Dissertations

The ability of students, specifically in higher education environments, to persist is a critical determinant of academic success. Student success is especially precarious within programs of nursing, where curricula include clinical, laboratory, and didactic content. Identifying and describing the barriers and facilitators to nursing student persistence provides a blueprint to appropriately use financial and human resources as well as determine the effect student demographic variables has on desiring, attending, or benefiting from persistence interventions. The outcome of this study can guide the deployment of institutional resources to provide persistence-based interventions that are evidence-based. Framed by Tinto's Theory of Student Departure, …

“Leadership is all about changing the order of things. Machiavelli said, ‘There is nothing so difficult or so dangerous as to undertake to change the order of things.’ And that is true. It is difficult, and it is sometimes dangerous, because people resist and people are afraid. And that is why only leaders can drive change.”

Importance Of Local Weather And Environmental Gradients On Demography Of A Broadly Distributed Temperate Frog, Hallie Lingo, James C. Munger

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Amphibian populations are sensitive to environmental temperatures and moisture, which vary with local weather conditions and may reach new norms and extremes as contemporary climate change progresses. Using long-term (11–16 years) mark-recapture data from 10 populations of the Columbia spotted frog (Rana luteiventris) from across its U.S. range, we addressed hypotheses about how demographic relationships to weather depend upon a population’s position along climate gradients. We estimated the effect of seasonal weather on annual survival probability and recruitment rates both within populations and across the species’ range from subalpine forests to semi-arid deserts. We calculated population-specific weather variables …

Mark-Recapture Study And Habitat Assessment For The Northern Metalmark Butterfly, Calephelis Borealis (Lepidoptera: Riodinidae), Weston J. Henry, Kristian S. Omland, Henry Frye, Wagner L. David

EEB Articles

Background: The northern metalmark (Calephelis borealis), is an exceedingly local, globally rare butterfly that is declining across the Midwestern and Northeastern USA. The principal stressors driving colony losses include afforestation and invasive plants that crowd out its larval hostplant (Packera ovata) and nectar resources.

Aims/Methods: To better understand its declines and guide restoration efforts, we 1) performed a mark-recapture study in Connecticut to document population trends where we were actively managing vegetation; 2) conducted a range-wide survey for evidence of phylogeographic structure, using cytochrome oxidase (CO1); 3) investigated abundance determinants of its larval foodplant, Packera ovata …

An Efficient Method Of Evaluating Multiple Concurrent Management Actions On Invasive Populations, Amy J. Davis, Randy Farrar, Brad Jump, Parker Hall, Travis Guerrant, Kim M. Pepin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Evaluating the efficacy of management actions to control invasive species is crucial for maintaining funding and to provide feedback for the continual improvement of management efforts. However, it is often difficult to assess the efficacy of control methods due to limited resources for monitoring. Managers may view effort on monitoring as effort taken away from performing management actions. We developed a method to estimate invasive species abundance, evaluate management effectiveness, and evaluate population growth over time from a combination of removal activities (e.g., trapping, ground shooting) using only data collected during removal efforts (method of removal, date, location, number of …

Body Mass Index (Bmi): A Screening Tool Analysis, Deepesh Khanna, Cadynce Peltzer, Payal Kahar, Mayur S. Parmar

HPD Articles

Body mass index (BMI), a measurement based on a person's height and weight, allows the classification of individuals into categories such as obese or overweight. With these classifications, we can assess risk for hypertension, diabetes, cancer, hypercholesterolemia, and other chronic diseases. Furthermore, childhood BMI serves as a prediction method for health and disease later in life. Along with BMI, researchers also study waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio in correlation with the above-mentioned chronic illnesses. This brief review explores the associations between body mass index, waist circumference, and the waist-hip ratio as measurements and their capability as predictors for persistent conditions …

Predictors Of Persistence, Retention & Completion For First-Generation Graduate Students, James Hutson, Susan Edele, Roger Mitch Nasser Jr., Gillian Parrish, Christie Rodgers, Scott Richmond, Michael Marzano, Ryan Curtis

Faculty Scholarship

Postsecondary education is still considered key for achieving upward mobility and economic success. While access to higher education has over the past three decades, students whose parents did not complete at least a bachelor’s degree continue to be at a distinct disadvantage. Given that most first-generation college students are from low-income and minority backgrounds, this population faces challenges distinct to them-1) insufficient academic preparation, 2) inadequate financial resources, and 3) deficient support from family members and/or peers that attended college. Yet, while first-generation undergraduate students have been extensively studied with regard to their motivations, challenges, and unique needs for persistence, …

Context: National licensing exams (NLEs) including the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 evaluate student achievement. Scores have historically been utilized to stratify medical student applicants for residency. Grade point average (GPA), number of practice questions completed, and performance on practice exams have been shown to be predictive of NLE performance. Test anxiety and acute stress have been shown to negatively impact NLE performance. The role of study behaviors and other nonacademic factors in COMLEX Level 1 performance is unknown.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate academic and nonacademic factors and to correlate them with COMLEX Level 1 …

Background/Purpose: There is clear evidence available that refutes the practice of routine amniotomy in the spontaneously laboring patient. Amniotomy is an intervention that disrupts a normal physiologic birth and therefore should be utilized judiciously. With a number of individuals undergoing induction of labor, it is important to consider the impact of amniotomy on labor progression as well as on maternal and neonatal outcomes and further determine if it should be an intervention routinely utilized. This integrative review examines the available evidence regarding amniotomy in labor induction. Methods: A literature search was conducted in January 2022 in CINHAL and PubMed with …

Disproportionality In Special Education: A Majority Of Minority Students In Special Education, Sharon Hubbard Booth Jan 2022

Disproportionality In Special Education: A Majority Of Minority Students In Special Education, Sharon Hubbard Booth

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disproportionality in special education has been discussed, written about among scholars, authors, and has been debated in courts for over four decades. Minority groups that are most often referred to in this context are African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. Disproportionate representation means that the percentage of these groups in special education differs significantly in proportion to their percentage enrollment in the general school population. This paper discusses the over-representation of children of color, particularly African Americans, in some special education disability categories, such as learning disabilities and emotional behavioral disorders.
