When Experts Become Novices: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of International Scholars’ Experiences At A Us University, Masha Krsmanovic
When Experts Become Novices: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of International Scholars’ Experiences At A Us University, Masha Krsmanovic
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
The experiences of international scholars in the United States who are part of short-term or exchange programs remain vastly under-investigated compared to their full-time, tenure-track, and tenured peers. Guided by Blau’s (1964) social exchange theory, this study investigated professional and social experiences of exchange scholars at a large public research university in the southeast United States. A mixed-method exploration was conducted through surveys and interviews with international scholars who participated in an exchange program in the spring of 2020. The results revealed that exchange scholars were most satisfied with work conditions and their research experience, but least satisfied with professional …

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Globalization has changed the landscape of higher education. The purpose of this study is to enhance understanding of how higher education leaders are engaging emerging questions about successful leadership, particularly when it comes to international student populations in times of crisis. Guided by the Intercultural Leadership framework, this comparative case study illuminates how university presidents from eight different countries were informed in their perceptions of international students and how they acted to support this vulnerable population. The results of this analysis highlight practical implications for higher education leaders to utilize when navigating global crises while protecting international student populations.
Fan Futures—Beyond The Archive: Papers From The Fanlis 2022 Symposium, Ludi Price, Lyn Robinson
Fan Futures—Beyond The Archive: Papers From The Fanlis 2022 Symposium, Ludi Price, Lyn Robinson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Following the first successful FanLIS symposium (Price & Robinson, 2022), our aim in 2022 was to continue to build bridges between the two fields, doing this through two streams held over the two-day event—the first stream being ‘Beyond the Archive’, and the second ‘Fan Futures’. ‘Beyond the Archive’ focused on the ways in which fans move beyond traditional relationships with the archive to subvert, use and perhaps even abuse the archive to create and innovate. ‘Fan Futures’ then zoomed out from the archive to consider different aspects of the information communication chain—creation, organisation, dissemination, discovery, management, preservation, analysis, use and …
Archiving As The Foundation Of Fansubbing: A Case Study On Fan-Made Translation Of Virtual Youtubers In China, Jincai Jiang
Archiving As The Foundation Of Fansubbing: A Case Study On Fan-Made Translation Of Virtual Youtubers In China, Jincai Jiang
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Although fansubbing has been increasingly recognised as a rich research spot for several disciplines like translation and media studies, the significance of fan archiving during fansubbing remains relatively less discussed despite its vitalness in 1) obtaining and managing both source and finalised products; 2) enabling fansubbing to evolve into systematic and efficient massive online practices. Based on the literature review of fansubbing’s historical development and the author’s observational fieldwork within an active Chinese fansubbing group, the paper explains why archiving can be the premise of fansubbing and demonstrates its latest application on Bilibili, arguably the most influential user-generated content sharing …
Unapologetically Her: A Nomadic-Intersectional Case Study Analysis On Lizzo And Jillian Michaels, Alexia Berlynn Martinez
Unapologetically Her: A Nomadic-Intersectional Case Study Analysis On Lizzo And Jillian Michaels, Alexia Berlynn Martinez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
With various iterations of the meaning and representation of a feminist woman, feuds arise, especially amongst public figures who capture the media’s attention. This paper analyzes the discourse amongst two communities with opposing views about feminist representations: the body-positive community and the fitness community. Utilizing an intersectional theoretical framework allows us to understand the levels of oppression and marginalization members of the body-positive community, specifically plus-size Black women, endure while also running up against the fitness community. There is no better illustration of this phenomenon than the public skirmish between Lizzo and Jillian Michaels. The goal of this case study …
"Advancing Pride": How New Turkish Historical Dramas Challenged Western Media's Stereotypical Images Of Muslims, Naim Aburaddi
"Advancing Pride": How New Turkish Historical Dramas Challenged Western Media's Stereotypical Images Of Muslims, Naim Aburaddi
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
After the phenomenal success of Resurrection: Ertugrul that started airing on the governmental Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) in 2014, a new wave of Turkish historical dramas started getting global popularity. These shows captivated Arabs’ and Muslims’ attention around the world and exceeded viewers’ expectations. Therefore, I examined in my study why Arab viewers watch those dramas, how they perceive and react to historical facts presented in those dramas, and whether and how those dramas confront the misrepresentations of Muslims by Western media and cinema. Utilizing Said’s conceptual framework of Orientalism and other research studies that focused on the …

Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks
Alt-Right Of The_Donald And Authoritarian Communists On Reddit: Internet Memes To Build Community, Joshua Hendricks
Master's Theses
This project infuses Lacanian psychoanalysis further into the rhetorical study by exploring authoritarian discourses on Reddit. I analyze the alt-right community that found a home on the subreddit r/The_Donald and chart their discourse as it shaped from the quarantine to the establishment of an independent forum called TheDonald.win. I selected memes and the comments around them to build the analysis. The second aspect of this thesis examines authoritarian communist discourse on Reddit. The leftist community splintered when r/socialism banned a community member because the person made catgirl art. The ban sent shockwaves through the leftist community on Reddit and generated …

It is widely theorized that the advent of the “Anthropocene Age” (under this or any other name) is bringing one form of human temporality to an end while it initiates another (Simon 2021). Because human activity threatens the duration and well-being of the planetary biosphere, the new age that this activity is bringing on—though it is proving to be extremely difficult to define—does present specific onto-epistemological and moral challenges behind its political and social problems. The most prominent and perhaps the core of these challenges is the demand to shed anthropocentrism in human culture, a change that would deeply alter …

The Impact Of Racial And Ethnic Socialization On Young Black Women's Roles In Interpersonal And Romantic Relationships: A Quantitative Study, Jessica L. Elliott
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Children often receive their first understanding of the nuances of society and how to navigate their experiences from parents and family members. Parents and family members of children of color have the additional task of teaching their children how to navigate through society as a person of color. The present study used grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014) and operated from a constructivist–interpretivist and critical–ideological paradigm (Ponterotto, 2005) to specifically explore the racial and ethnic socialization messages young Black women received in childhood and adolescence regarding the expectations of their roles in these relationships and how these messages impacted them throughout their …
Fanwork Communication Through Social Media: A Dynamic Practice Of Celebrity Fans In China, Qiuyan Guo
Fanwork Communication Through Social Media: A Dynamic Practice Of Celebrity Fans In China, Qiuyan Guo
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Contemporary Chinese celebrity fans mainly engage in two innovative types of fanwork communications through social media: 1) digital relays of sequentially creating and presenting their own complete fan art and fiction and 2) dissemination of fan-made non-digital peripheral materials by mail or in person after online showcasing. Based on unobtrusive observation and semi-structured interviews, this paper presents the specific steps in both types of communication activities among fans of two Chinese musical actors, Ayanga and Yunlong, on the Weibo platform. Exceeding fans’ traditional sole emphasis on cataloging their creations, these fanwork communications comprise the information creation (organization), dissemination, and preservation …

Ready Player?: Sex And Race In Video Games, Matthew Michael Espino
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As a child, I had always been fascinated with video games. Sure, I used video games as a way to relieve stress mainly, but I found myself drawn into the worlds that I was immersing myself in. These worlds are filled with social structures, cultures, governments, even religions. Once I started doing research in college, I took a bit of a step back from the games I loved and took a broader look at what I was playing. Specifically, I wanted to see what these worlds had to offer in terms of representation of races, gender, and non-human characters. These …

Developing Cultural Competence Among Sixth-Grade Students Through Indigenous Knowledge And Place-Based Education, Tyus Roanhorse
Developing Cultural Competence Among Sixth-Grade Students Through Indigenous Knowledge And Place-Based Education, Tyus Roanhorse
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There is a need to develop cultural competence in educational settings. While there is a focus on training K-12 educators to be culturally competent, there is little focus on developing and examining the impact of student cultural competence training. Integrating Indigenous knowledge in an education setting is a unique way to start developing cultural competency by recognizing cross-cultural worldviews and perspectives. This can be done while using place-based education, which links the classroom to the cultural environment that has significant meaning to Indigenous peoples while enriching the learning experience for all students. The current study examines and measures the development …

Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer and resulted in 1.8 million deaths worldwide in 2020. While cigarette smoking is the most familiar cause of lung cancer, up to 25% of cases occur in non-smokers, thus other environmental agents are also causative. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a known lung carcinogen and poses occupational and environmental exposure risks relevant to humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. This dissertation considers the carcinogenic mechanisms of a highly potent, particulate, hexavalent chromium compound, zinc chromate. The molecular mechanism of carcinogenesis induced by Cr(VI) is not fully understood, but it is known that chromosome instability is …
Engineering Of Ideal Systems For The Study And Direction Of Stem Cell Asymmetrical Division And Fate Determination, Martina Zamponi
Engineering Of Ideal Systems For The Study And Direction Of Stem Cell Asymmetrical Division And Fate Determination, Martina Zamponi
Biomedical Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The cellular microenvironment varies significantly across tissues, and it is constituted by both resident cells and the macromolecules they are exposed to. Cues that the cells receive from the microenvironment, as well as the signaling transmitted to it, affect their physiology and behavior. This notion is valid in the context of stem cells, which are susceptible to biochemical and biomechanical signaling exchanged with the microenvironment, and which plays a fundamental role in establishing fate determination and cell differentiation events. The definition of the molecular mechanisms that drive stem cell asymmetrical division, and how these are modulated by microenvironmental signaling, is …

Characterization Of Blueberry (Poly)Phenolics In Foods, Their Metabolites In Human Biological Samples And Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Phytochemicals In Vitro, Laura Felgus-Lavefve
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Blueberries’ popularity is in part supported by the health benefits associated with their consumption. Research has strongly focused on their polyphenol and anthocyanin concentration, one of the highest amongst commonly consumed foods. Polyphenols have demonstrated antioxidant effects in vitro, and consuming polyphenol-rich foods is associated with protective effects towards non-communicable diseases, but their direct bioactivity in the human body remains to be fully understood. It is estimated that about 90 to 95% of the initial polyphenol intake reaches the colon without being absorbed. Instead, phenolic compounds go through extensive biotransformations, consisting of catabolism into smaller compounds mostly carried out by …
The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson
The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Consumers continue to demonstrate a willingness to accrue more debt. They are also more accepting of increased repayment risk via the acceptance of longer loan terms. Extant research on consumer borrowing consists primarily of experiments designed to assess consumer choices and understand how consumers evaluate loan attributes in relation to one another within consumer borrowing contexts (Kamleitner, Hoelzl, and Kirchler 2012; Ranyard et al., 2006). Thus, prior research examines consumer responses to loan information rather than the generation of loan parameters at the time of financing. With important implications for consumers, marketers of financial products, academic researchers, and federal regulators, …
"The Ghost Of Freire Is In My Kitchen Now": Dominant Ideology And Critical Possibility In Teachers' Dialogue On Pedagogy Of The Oppressed, Hope A. Kitts
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Critical scholars in sociology, philosophy and cultural studies have long said what is wrong with schools, insofar as they function to perpetuate inequality rather than social uplift, generally. Despite this well-researched state of affairs, schooling—of the State-sponsored, public education kind—remains beholden to the economic interests of the dominant classes. Judging from current retention and attrition rates, proficiency levels, and college entrance numbers, schooling has continued to disproportionately benefit White people, especially in relation to their social class. Moreover teachers continue to be disproportionately White and female when compared with their students. Through a critical analysis of teachers’ discourse on Freire, …

The Rise Of Asian American Discrimination During The Covid 19 Pandemic, Kelsey June Ramstad, Monifah Erykah Darsaw, William Wesley Phillips, Joshua Natkin
Immigration Scholarship: History, Trends and Development in Global Immigration
Since the start of the pandemic, there has been an increase in discrimination and prejudice against the cultures and identities of Asian Americans. The United States has a long history of discrimination against Asian American immigrants predating the Civil War, from People vs. Hall to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The modern-day effects have even spread to social media, as shown in an article consisting of a group study of 274 Americans. This paper seeks to uncover the causes and effects of the rise in discrimination against Asian Americans that affects their culture, identity, and diaspora. The paper also …

The Conflicts Surrounding Establishment Of Places Of Worship: A Structuration Analysis Of Gki Yasmin Bogor, M. Syaeful Anam, Mukh. Imron Ali Mahmudi
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This article aims to map out the conflict over the establishment of GKI Yasmin Church in Bogor, which has occurred since 2006, by looking at the dialectic relations among its sociological dimensions. The Structuration theory of Anthony Giddens is utilized to analyze relationships between structure and agency. However, previous studies have also pointed out that cultural aspects cast a wide influence on this conflict. As such, this paper also uses Paulus Wirutomo’s triadic conception of Structure, Process, and Culture, in which the latter will be explained in-depth to outline the role of cultural hegemony in reproducing the Structure of GKI …

Hip Hop Music And Communicative Messages: Non-White Resistance Of Marginalization Experienced In America, Fatima Albrehi
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
The purpose of this research is to understand how non-white, marginalized races and/or ethnicgroups feel about utilizing hip hop music to address and combat structural violence. Structuralviolence includes any institutional, social, and political barriers that prevent equality. Twenty-six non-white participantswere recruited and asked to listen to and watch music videos for three contemporary hip hop songs: Nowhere Fast by Eminem ft. Kehlani (2017), This is Americaby Childish Gambino (2018), and Nothin’ Newby 21 Savage (2017). Participants then conversed with one another through a focus group session in which questions were asked about how they felt …
