Theorizing The Spiritual-Secular Binary In Modern And Contemporary Art Of – And By Artists From – The Swana Region, Valerie Gonzalez Oct 2022

Theorizing The Spiritual-Secular Binary In Modern And Contemporary Art Of – And By Artists From – The Swana Region, Valerie Gonzalez

Regards

The present article critically examines the spiritual–secular binary in modern and contemporary art from the SWANA region and by artists with heritage from that region who live or have lived elsewhere. Given this binary’s origin in the European Enlightenment’s view of religion, and its epistemic canonization through post-Enlightenment ideas on art and culture in the colonial era, this examination is carried out within the framework of current decolonizing art historical discourses and their postcolonial background.
The reflection begins with a key moment of global modernism, underpinned by the colonial diffusion of secularism. It then proceeds to explore the cultural shifts …

Injustice Within Renewable Energy Life Cycles: Can Irena Offer A Solution?, G. Webster Ross Oct 2022

Injustice Within Renewable Energy Life Cycles: Can Irena Offer A Solution?, G. Webster Ross

IdeaFest: Interdisciplinary Journal of Creative Works and Research from Cal Poly Humboldt

This paper explores case studies of green colonialism, supply chain injustices, and poor e-waste management within renewable energy life cycles, and investigates how the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) may be the best suited organization to address and mitigate these issues on a global scale. While renewable energy technology is often heralded as the key to a sustainable future, the life cycle of these technologies is riddled with human rights violations and other injustices. To begin with, many of the minerals required for assembling the hardware are mined in unregulated environments, resulting in several injustices such as health and safety …

Critical Pedagogy And Disability: Considerations For Music Education, Ellary A. Draper Oct 2022

Critical Pedagogy And Disability: Considerations For Music Education, Ellary A. Draper

Visions of Research in Music Education

Developed by Brazilian Paulo Freire to teach economically disadvantaged adults to read, critical peda- gogy has since inspired others to adapt the model to other subject areas. In the area of music education, Frank Abrahams created the Critical Pedagogy for Music Education (CPME) model and has written about the use of CPME in teacher preparation programs. Scholars in disability studies have also been inspired by critical pedagogy, writing about disability pedagogy. Notably, people with disabilities have historically been omitted from models of critical pedagogy. This article discusses the intersections of critical pedagogy, music education, and disability, and makes recommendations to …

At Home Or On Tour? Mixed Race Filipina/O American Reflections On Identity And Visiting The Motherland, Lisa Delacruz Combs, Marc P. Johnston-Guerrero Oct 2022

At Home Or On Tour? Mixed Race Filipina/O American Reflections On Identity And Visiting The Motherland, Lisa Delacruz Combs, Marc P. Johnston-Guerrero

The Qualitative Report

This duoethnography (a dialogic approach to studying the meanings given to a similarly experienced phenomenon among two or more individuals; Norris, 2008) engages dilemmas of identity and authenticity for two mixed heritage Filipina/o Americans on various points in their ongoing journeys toward decolonization. We center our analysis around recent travels to the “motherland” of the Philippines, engaging two guiding questions: (a) What does it mean for us to claim Filipino-ness within the context of the Philippines when we are solely visiting? And (b) How is the dissonance of being in a different national context helpful for better understanding our relationships …

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Superheroes & The Law, Thomas Simmons, Chris Dellicarpini, Rick Collins Oct 2022

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: Superheroes & The Law, Thomas Simmons, Chris Dellicarpini, Rick Collins

Faculty Publications

Legal issues and lessons abound in superhero narratives. Caped heroes often act above and outside the law but deliver on law’s promises of justice and mercy in ways that ordinary legal actors cannot. Legal ethics, criminal law, and procedure are all on display. Superheroes supply a framework for examination of multiple legal issues and lessons, including what it means to be ethical (within the context of the rules of professional conduct and also in a broader sense) and how a legal life can be a virtuous one.

Ambient Athleticism: Politicizing Akira’S Accelerationist Olympiad, Thomas G. Chaplin Oct 2022

Ambient Athleticism: Politicizing Akira’S Accelerationist Olympiad, Thomas G. Chaplin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis politicizes Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 animated cyberpunk film, Akira, specifically through how it stages its myriad neoliberal crises as opportunities for accelerationist solutions mediated by the Tokyo Olympics. Akira’s display of fully animated and intense action physics produces an aesthetic relation to its own athletes that contracts around their bodies in an attempt to transgress classical and oppressive compositions. Akira’s vague utopic promise receives broad acceptance and affirmation by extant scholarship, often relying on the accelerative impulses found in the works of Gilles Deleuze to substantiate Akira’s hopeful ending. Invoking Gilles Deleuze’s notion of athleticism, this thesis critically rereads …

University Media Coverage Of Rape Cases And Its Contribution To Victim Blaming, Chelsea Cheyenne Hays

Student Theses and Dissertations

In this study I focus on whether the media has any effect on victim-blaming in the universities setting. I looked particularly at Ivy league universities due to their prestige. I focus on how they handled the assault, the language used by the media for the perpetrator and the survivor. In this study the university that I studied were Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Stanford University. I used a critical content to analysis to find emerging themes throughout national newspapers, The New York Times and USA Today. I also looked at the student newspaper for each university. My findings concluded that …

Reconstructing Culture: Seasonal Labour Migration And The Cultural Geographies Of Social Change In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai Oct 2022

Reconstructing Culture: Seasonal Labour Migration And The Cultural Geographies Of Social Change In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper focuses on seasonal labour migration in rural India to examine how migrant returnees sought to reconstitute historical and hierarchical social relations in their home villages. I use qualitative research conducted in Maharashtra state in western India from 2014-15 among landowning farmers, landless returnees, and nonmigrant laborers. I demonstrate that for the returnees, an important element of social and cultural change in their home communities was their ability to upend and replace 'residual culture,' based on expectations of continued exploitation and performative hierarchy, with an 'emergent' one. I claim that the mechanics of counter-hegemony in rural Maharashtra includes a …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a by-product of aerobic life, are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. The excess of ROS leads to oxidative stress, instigating the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the lipid membrane through a free radical chain reaction and the formation of the most bioactive aldehyde, known as 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). 4-HNE functions as a signaling molecule and toxic product and acts mainly by forming covalent adducts with nucleophilic functional groups in proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. The mitochondria have been implicated as a site for 4-HNE generation and adduction. Several studies clarified how 4-HNE affects the …

Queering The Weeki Wachee Mermaid And Its Renewed Aesthetic Value, Jacqueline D. Merveille Oct 2022

Queering The Weeki Wachee Mermaid And Its Renewed Aesthetic Value, Jacqueline D. Merveille

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have asserted that the visual representation of womanhood responds to a cultural context, which often adheres to patriarchy and the satisfaction of the male gaze. The mediated depiction of the mermaid through time is polysemous and therefore deserves a thorough examination substantiated by robust theories. As a gendered feminine figure that complies with the patriarchal pressure of subjugation to gratify male desire, the mermaid can, however, elude the socially constructed dichotomy of genders, contributing to her agency and queerness. By investigating the Florida roadside attraction of Weeki Wachee Springs’ mermaid shows and other mediated visual depictions of the sea …

Eating Disorders In Men: A Comprehensive Summary, Connor James Spratt, Liam Alexander Mackenzie Myles, Emanuele Maria Merlo Oct 2022

Eating Disorders In Men: A Comprehensive Summary, Connor James Spratt, Liam Alexander Mackenzie Myles, Emanuele Maria Merlo

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Eating disorders (EDs) have detrimental effects on an individual’s physical and mental health, along with significant interpersonal, social and economic effects. Furthermore, men who are suffering with an ED face unique challenges with this. Men suffering with EDs have historically received little attention within ED research, diagnosis and intervention. However, the number of men suffering with these issues is significant and growing. Understanding of EDs tend to ignore male experiences, meaning many are left to suffer in silence until the ED has developed to a critical point. However, many now recognize the need to understand the issues facing men suffering …

Developing A Subject Gateway For Accessing Online Resources On Korean Studies, W.M. Tharanga Dilruk Ranasinghe Dr. Oct 2022

Developing A Subject Gateway For Accessing Online Resources On Korean Studies, W.M. Tharanga Dilruk Ranasinghe Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The growth of online resources on Korean Studies (KS) has increased over past several years. They cover almost all facets of the discipline ranging from Korean Art to Korean Sociology. Majority of these resources offer free and unrestricted access and are managed by various institutions and individuals.

The demand for KS has increased as a fast-growing discipline in South Asia. There are number of institutions in the region which offer various academic programs related to KS, especially on Korean language and culture studies. However, despite of little collections, majority of libraries and resource centers in these institutions do not have …

Married Working Women And Work-Family Interface In Urban Ghana : A Holistic Approach, Kwaku Abrefa Busia Oct 2022

Married Working Women And Work-Family Interface In Urban Ghana : A Holistic Approach, Kwaku Abrefa Busia

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The intersection of work and family has gained traction across various disciplines in an attempt to study how work and family life affect individuals, families, organisations and societies. Nonetheless, most studies on work-family interface (WFI) remain dominated by theories, concepts and experiences rooted in white, middle class and homogenous individuals in Western societies. Owing to these concerns, there have been widespread calls for more cross-cultural studies that capture the plurality of work-family realities and conceptualisation, especially from the Global South. Emphasis has also been made on the need to expand workfamily research beyond the often-studied professional workers and their families …

Harmony Of Difference: Theorizing Rashid Johnson's New Universalism In The Grids Of Antoine's Organ, Mark Fredricks Oct 2022

Harmony Of Difference: Theorizing Rashid Johnson's New Universalism In The Grids Of Antoine's Organ, Mark Fredricks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My reading of Antoine’s Organ, a sculptural installation created by the artist Rashid Johnson in 2016, explores the artwork as a richly textured response to the limited universalism of modernism. I argue that Antoine’s Organ is a multimodal expression which crafts a harmony of difference using the aesthetic language and forms of both visual art and music. The term “harmony of difference” is taken from and inspired by a composition of the same name by jazz musician Kamasi Washington, and is used within to describe Rashid Johnson’s counterpoint strategy to work differences with and against each other, mobilizing the grid’s …

Cultural Work In Peacebuilding Among Traumatized Communities Of Northern Ireland 1: Background And General Considerations, Eugen Koh Oct 2022

Cultural Work In Peacebuilding Among Traumatized Communities Of Northern Ireland 1: Background And General Considerations, Eugen Koh

New England Journal of Public Policy

Peace in Northern Ireland today remains fragile despite the exhaustive peacebuilding efforts that have taken place since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Many aspects of the sectarian conflict have been embedded in cultural substrata of the respective communities, and cultural transformation is necessary to achieve comprehensive and sustained peace. The basic assumptions about the Other in this sectarian conflict have their origin in traumatic events that occurred more than three hundred years ago and have been reinforced by the more recent three decades of conflict known as the Troubles. These traumatic individual and collective experiences across the generations have …

From Cultural Studies To Literary Studies: The Evolution, Turn, And Problems Of Diaspora Theory, Qixing Zhou Oct 2022

From Cultural Studies To Literary Studies: The Evolution, Turn, And Problems Of Diaspora Theory, Qixing Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As an interdisciplinary theory that emerged in the 1990s, the discourse of diaspora theory has engaged with varying fields: ethnicity studies, postcolonial studies, globalization, and literary studies. With the continuous evolution and deepening of the diaspora phenomenon, this theory has remained open. Cultural identity, as the core of diaspora theory, is emphasized as being constantly constructed and produced by the subject, and being in a state of hybridity, while the traditional fixed and single identity is overthrown. With the fading of (post)colonial history, globalization has risen to the forefront of diaspora theory, replacing (post)colonization; meanwhile, the core of diaspora theory …

Reparative Reading,Postcritique, And Methodology In Literary And Cultural Studies, Ling Yang Oct 2022

Reparative Reading,Postcritique, And Methodology In Literary And Cultural Studies, Ling Yang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The ongoing reflection on critique in Western academia has given rise to a debate about the hermeneutics of suspicion and the methodology of reading, which finds its origin in Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s 1997 essay “Paranoid Reading and Reparative Reading.” In that seminal essay, Sedgwick draws on Melanie Klein’s psychoanalytical theory and Silvan Tomkins’s affect theory to identify paranoid reading as the dominant mode of contemporary literary studies. She also proposes, on the basis of queer reading and cultural practices, an alternative approach, namely, the reparative reading style. Sedgwick’s influential reading theory forces us to attend to the importance of affect …

The Aesthetics Of Cinematic Violence And The Mechanism Of Affect Theory, Qi Gai, Guihai Lin Oct 2022

The Aesthetics Of Cinematic Violence And The Mechanism Of Affect Theory, Qi Gai, Guihai Lin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Film is a typical affective art. From the perspective of affect theory, the aesthetics of cinematic violence originates from postindustrial “cinematic body” which has a strong propensity for affect. Such aesthetics aims at creating formalized violent images to activate viewers’ immediate affective reactions, thus compensating for the declining affectivity of traditional grandiose narratives and apathetic individuals. The aesthetics of cinematic violence can be explored in the following two aspects: the poetic and the brutal. In recent years, mainland China has witnessed the rise of “brutal narrative” and the construction of localized “affective politics”, which imply the turn of Chinese cinema …

Virtual Heterotopia: The Mechanism Of Pleasure And Reception Of Contemporary Popular Culture, Yanshu Gou Oct 2022

Virtual Heterotopia: The Mechanism Of Pleasure And Reception Of Contemporary Popular Culture, Yanshu Gou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Thanks to China’s development of information technology and secularization, popular culture increasingly affects contemporary people’s values, psychological structure, and emotional mode. The core characteristic of popular culture is to arouse, engage, and satisfy the audience’s pleasure, which is realized through three approaches. First, popular culture establishes a textual world of “hyperreality” through simulation techniques and provides the audience with an experience of “living elsewhere.” Second, popular culture exposes the outmoded ideology in daily life through “poaching” and offers the audience a channel for self-expression. Third, it rebuilds the textual world through a “producerly text,” so that the audience can attain …

Ethnographic Audience Research As An Intermediary Paradigm: A Case Study Of Bruce Austin's “Cult” Movie Audiences, Kang Lu Oct 2022

Ethnographic Audience Research As An Intermediary Paradigm: A Case Study Of Bruce Austin's “Cult” Movie Audiences, Kang Lu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The “revival of ethnography” in the field of audience studies in the 1980s is not only a re-discussion of the traditional methods in communication studies, but also a result of the influence of the “ethnographic turn” in cultural studies that focuses on the television audience. This was in line with the need of film studies in response to the lack of empirical audience evidence in textual analysis theory. Bruce Austin, one of the representative researchers in the field of ethnography, presents to us through his study of “cult” movie audiences that ethnography as a method helps us with data collection …

Hyperspace In Postmodern Spectacle Of Image: A Critique On The Space Philosophy Of Urban Intelligent Surveillance, Zhiwen Deng Oct 2022

Hyperspace In Postmodern Spectacle Of Image: A Critique On The Space Philosophy Of Urban Intelligent Surveillance, Zhiwen Deng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Artificial intelligence has been widely used in the security industry. Intelligent video surveillance converts data into images on the screen. These postmodern spectacles of images involve daily life in the “image process,” forming an accurate copy and representation of daily life. As a result, a postmodern hyperspace is created. Such a hyperspace, particularly in the capitalist society, produces a split between human beings and their surroundings. The postmodern body thus loses the sensibility of space coordinate and aesthetics, which veils the real in life and causes the degradation of subjects’ professional skills. In aesthetic terms, hyperspace leads to the disenchantment …
