Indigenous Ecocriticism And The Relationships Between Humans And Nature In Catherine Knutsson’S Shadows Cast By Stars, Kerri Nicole Nelson Jan 2022

Indigenous Ecocriticism And The Relationships Between Humans And Nature In Catherine Knutsson’S Shadows Cast By Stars, Kerri Nicole Nelson

English

In the midst of the climate crisis, Young Adult dystopian literature offers a glimpse of the possible dark futures in store for all of us. Yet Indigenous Young Adult literature revises the natural world not as the enemy of the survival of human beings, but as a possible ally. In Cassandra Knutsson’s Shadows Cast by Stars, a plague is raging and Indigenous blood is key to human survival. Through her journey to save her community, Cassandra demonstrates how she builds a more positive relationship with nature. By offering alternative possibilities for how to treat and interact with nature, Shadows Cast …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of an international doctoral capstone on occupational therapy clinicians’ current practice. The study used a cross-sectional descriptive online survey design with qualitative elements with 26 occupational therapy graduates. All participants identified as female and the majority were 25-34 years old. Participants reported that the international doctorate capstone experience positively impacted their cultural competence and professional growth. Qualitative outcomes supported these findings through three themes on culture, building rapport with patients, and professional growth. This study suggests that an international doctoral capstone experience is an important way for occupational therapy students …

“Every Human Is Psychedelic” An Analysis Of Contemporary Psychedelic Drug Use And Subculture, H. J. Taylor Jan 2022

“Every Human Is Psychedelic” An Analysis Of Contemporary Psychedelic Drug Use And Subculture, H. J. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The 21st Century is seeing an unprecedented wave of psychedelic drug research after decades of stagnancy. Despite this revival, there has been little research or interest in the current revival of psychedelic subculture or the attitudes of psychedelic users today—from here referred to as “psychedelia.” This qualitative study of 19 self-described psychedelic users/psychedelia members probes their intimate experiences with psychedelic drugs, their involvement in the broader subculture, and their political and social beliefs. By analyzing the subculture through post-subcultural theory, this study examines the state of psychedelic subculture today, its participants, and members beliefs in relation to drugs, politics, and …

Determining Value In Migrancy: The Relative Cultural Capital From The Aesthetics Of Displacement, Timothy M. Naslund Jan 2022

Determining Value In Migrancy: The Relative Cultural Capital From The Aesthetics Of Displacement, Timothy M. Naslund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Pro-migration scholars and advocates for stricter immigrant legislation alike tend to rely on an economic framework to measure the value migrants bring toward the nation they’ve immigrated to and whether that value constitutes their right and ability to attain citizenship. By analyzing the influence and value found within Vladimir Nabokov’s use of the aesthetics of displacement, as well as other migrant writers since Nabokov, such as Cristina Garcia and Claudia Rankine that have expanded the racial and ethnic perspective of what can be considered “American,” I argue the criteria for citizenship within the United States should extend beyond traditional economic …

Psychoanalysis And Dreams In Toni Morrison’S Beloved: Exploring Continuities And Ruptures Of Trauma Cycles, Rebecca M. Peter Jan 2022

Psychoanalysis And Dreams In Toni Morrison’S Beloved: Exploring Continuities And Ruptures Of Trauma Cycles, Rebecca M. Peter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

“Psychoanalysis and Dreams in Toni Morrison’s Beloved: Exploring Continuities and Ruptures of Trauma Cycles,” explores the function of dreams as they relate to trauma and memory. This thesis argues that a character’s engagement with their dreams leads to a healing discontinuity of traumatic cycles, while dreams left untouched likely result in historical and transgenerational cycles and the continuation of personal trauma and its symptoms. This thesis compares the dreams of the characters Beloved and Denver. In part because Morrison notes her influence from both African and Western traditions, this paper argues that a sufficient understanding of dreams in her work …

Radical Reticence: Quietness, Vision, And Resistance In Contemporary Representations Of Slavery, Stephen A. Mcgeary Jan 2022

Radical Reticence: Quietness, Vision, And Resistance In Contemporary Representations Of Slavery, Stephen A. Mcgeary

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Throughout the 21st century, some artists, athletes, and politicians began to use their platforms to speak out against the issues of systemic racism and police brutality that continue to affect black Americans to this day. While this outpouring of support for the black community has helped move the needle in terms of equity and inclusion initiatives, critics have often labeled these figures and movements too public or loud, conflating the concepts of talking and loudness with resistance to the status quo. Yet, in an era when “silence is not an option” and “quietness is complicity,” African American authors and artists …

Settler Colonialism On The Discursive Frontier: An Analysis Of Indigenous Climate Justice Leaders And The Carceral Settler-State, Talia E. Kibsey Jan 2022

Settler Colonialism On The Discursive Frontier: An Analysis Of Indigenous Climate Justice Leaders And The Carceral Settler-State, Talia E. Kibsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis examines Indigenous environmental justice discourse within the context of the U.S. carceral settler-state to advance a conceptual framework I name discursive frontierism. I use rhetorical analysis informed by critical and cultural theory to help make visual—and visible—the ways in which colonial frontierism operates in discursive spaces. I analyze the language of the carceral settler-state, including embodiment and affect as communicative language, as well as the language of Indigenous and Indigenous-led resistance. In the first half of the thesis, I argue that the language of the settler-state discursively constitutes Indigenous peoples as criminals and colonial subjects in order to …

A Strategy To Manage Members Expectation Of Pastor's Work In Multicultural Churches In Birmingham, England, Steve Palmer Jan 2022

A Strategy To Manage Members Expectation Of Pastor's Work In Multicultural Churches In Birmingham, England, Steve Palmer

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

2017 the North England Conference administrators evaluated my ministry, and although they were satisfied with my work, the feedback from some of the church members indicated dissatisfaction. It was evident that the diverse ethnic and cultural groups had different expectations of the role and responsibility of the pastor. It was difficult for me to do fulfill all their expectations.

Method

The research method employed in the design of this project was a qualitative one. It explored the question under examination by using semi-structured interviews, questionnaire, mentorship training, discussions, pastors' expectations, and cultural intelligence seminars. The semi structured interview and …

The Dances Of Diplomacy: French Social Dance Culture In The United States, 1780-1800, Kaylar Gina Moser Jan 2022

The Dances Of Diplomacy: French Social Dance Culture In The United States, 1780-1800, Kaylar Gina Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores how social dancing in the United States formed a noteworthy aspect of political, diplomatic, social, and class exchange for U.S. elites both domestically and overseas; and how the cultural dominance over dance that France enjoyed during this period created an informal cultural diplomatic relationship between the United States and France in the 1780s and the 1790s. I argue that U.S. elites utilized this dance culture as a form of upper-class status legitimation that could serve diplomatic purposes. This project increases the purview of U.S. cultural diplomatic studies by centering on the eighteenth century and by utilizing an …

La Musique Dans Les Cultures Tech. La Synthèse Modulaire En Temps De Covid-19, Eliot Bates Jan 2022

La Musique Dans Les Cultures Tech. La Synthèse Modulaire En Temps De Covid-19, Eliot Bates

Publications and Research

Beyond What's Missing: Silence In Women-Authored Novels From Wollstonecraft To Shelley, Kelli Wilhelm Jan 2022

Beyond What's Missing: Silence In Women-Authored Novels From Wollstonecraft To Shelley, Kelli Wilhelm

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation responds to and intends to subvert binary interpretations of silence, particularly women’s silences, as representing either submission or resistance to oppressive institutions and societal expectations. I examine five women-authored novels from British Romanticism. The first half of this dissertation focuses on three radical works of the 1790s, Mary Wollstonecraft’s The Wrongs of Woman, Mary Hays’s The Victim of Prejudice, and Charlotte Smith's The Old Manor House. The second half discusses two well-known early nineteenth-century novels, Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818). Through examinations of these novels, I discuss how silence functions …

Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen Jan 2022

Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

This thesis situates Taiwan as a settler colonial state by examining the discourse around the governance of national parks and the criminalization of Indigenous hunting. Placed in the context of historical patterns of land dispossession and cultural genocide, these two issues represent the ongoing process of settler colonialism and the reproduction of settler colonial relations through environmentalism. I focus on the narratives around three case studies: the controversial and ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the Maqaw National Park, the Tumpu Daingaz buluo’s struggle with the Yushan National Park, and the Tama Talum Indigenous hunting constitutional reinterpretation case. I argue that settler …

Effects Of Teaching Argument To First-Year Community-College Students Using A Structural And Dialectical Approach, Sharon Radcliff Jan 2022

Effects Of Teaching Argument To First-Year Community-College Students Using A Structural And Dialectical Approach, Sharon Radcliff

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to measure to what extent an experimental method of teaching argument incorporating elements from both Toulmin’s (2004) structural approach and Walton’s (2013) dialectical approach effects first-year college students’ ability to write strong arguments. This experimental instruction used critical questioning as a strategy in building a strong argument, incorporating alternative viewpoints, and creating a dialogue between claims and counterclaims, backed logically by verifiable evidence from reliable sources.

Using the Analytic Scoring Rubric of Argumentative Writing (ASRAW; Stapleton & Wu, 2015) that includes the argument elements of claims, data, counterclaim, counterclaim data, rebuttal claim, and rebuttal …

The Role Of Human Dopamine Transporter Threonine 261 And Serine 262 In Amphetamine Regulation Of Transporter Function And Surface Expression, Sina Abdollahi Jan 2022

The Role Of Human Dopamine Transporter Threonine 261 And Serine 262 In Amphetamine Regulation Of Transporter Function And Surface Expression, Sina Abdollahi

Theses and Dissertations

Amphetamine (AMPH) has been used clinically and recreationally around the world for years. A 2021 study reports a 67.5% rise in AMPH use from 2010-2017 across all fifty states. Study also shows that 30% of patients with AMPH-induced psychosis end up with primary psychosis over time. AMPH works by inhibiting monoamine (Norepinephrine (NE), Serotonin (5-HT), and Dopamine (DA) reuptake followed by triggering transporter mediated monoamine release and consequently increases monoamine concentrations in extracellular synaptic space. AMPH also works as a substrate for monoamine transporters, enters the neuron, and once its inside the neuron, it will prevent the storage of monoamines …

Race, Weight, Gender And The Embodied (Odied, Odied) Consciousness Of Big-Bodied Black Women Educators: A Phenomenological Study, Kendra D. Johnson Jan 2022

Race, Weight, Gender And The Embodied (Odied, Odied) Consciousness Of Big-Bodied Black Women Educators: A Phenomenological Study, Kendra D. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Big-Bodied Black women in the United States have perpetually navigated the veritable dichotomy of being hyper-visible and invisible (Beauboeuf-Lafontant, 2003; Fleetwood, 2001; Strings, 2019). Fat Black female bodies have borne the burden of exaggerated tropes and exploitation throughout history, stripping them of their femininity and humanity and resulting in a unique form of objectification (Strings, 2019). Inconsistent messages about BBWs, their bodies, and their value in society have endured for generations. They have been essential in constructing the controlling images of Black womanhood in the U.S. (Collins, 2000). The controlling images all evoked thoughts about the suitability of Black women …

A Different World: The Experiences Of Black Women At A Southern Predominantly White Institution, Latoya Stackhouse

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The present study investigated the lived experiences of Black women on a predominantly White institution (PWI) campus in the South as they relate to the core themes of Patricia Hill Collins’ Black Feminist Thought (BFT). The core themes of BFT that were the focus of the research were Self-Definition/Empowerment, Safe Space, Controlling Images, Invisibility/Sense of Belonging. Sista circle methodology was used as the form of inquiry with two 60-minute sessions over a two-month span. This methodology was chosen because its focus centers the lived narratives of Black women within a safe space unlike traditional focus groups. Findings from the sista …

Crippling Stagnation: Disability Imagery And The Handicapped South, Amber L. Stickney Jan 2022

Crippling Stagnation: Disability Imagery And The Handicapped South, Amber L. Stickney

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Southern literature is well-known for its disabled characters due to the proliferation of the Southern Gothic genre. Many scholars have identified these disabled characters as metaphors for the failure of the Lost Cause, but less attention has been placed on how the internalization of the Lost Cause mythology has caused Southerners to become disabled. Hence, this study aims at understanding the relationship between grand narratives and Southerners through a cultural studies approach. This thesis focuses on short stories, specifically Flannery O’Connor’s “Good Country People” (1955), Breece D’J Pancake’s “Time and Again” (1983), and Bobbie Ann Mason’s “Shiloh” (1982). The research …

The Roots Of Collapse: Imposing Constitutional Governance, Catherine Baylin Duryea Jan 2022

The Roots Of Collapse: Imposing Constitutional Governance, Catherine Baylin Duryea

Faculty Publications

The foundational assumption of constitutional governance poses a conundrum for contemporary state-builders: a constitution heavily influenced by foreigners does not represent the views of the governed. Can a modern state-building effort foster democratic institutions when the new government reflects foreign? Nowhere was this tension more apparent than in Afghanistan, where the United States and the United Nations were heavily involved in drafting the 2004 Constitution. They shaped the process from the initial framework to the final, frenzied approval. Foreigners were engaged at both the procedural level—determining how the negotiations would occur and who would participate—and at the substantive level—providing input …

Scaffolds From Medical Grade Chitosan: A Good Choice For 3d Cultivation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Merve Çapkin Yurtsever, Özge Eki̇n Akdere, Menemşe Gümüşdereli̇oğlu Jan 2022

Scaffolds From Medical Grade Chitosan: A Good Choice For 3d Cultivation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Merve Çapkin Yurtsever, Özge Eki̇n Akdere, Menemşe Gümüşdereli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Chitosan has high biocompatibility, supports proliferation of many cells, and can be a good carrier for various growth factors. However, low attachment ratio and spheroid formation of several stem cell types on plain chitosan scaffolds/films is still a problem. In this study, it was aimed to obtain 3D scaffolds using medical grade chitosan (MC) with a high deacetylation degree (DD ≥ 92.6%) to overcome the spheroid formation of rat adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells (rAdMSCs) on control chitosan (C, DD = 75%-85%) scaffolds. Genipin was used as a biological chemical crosslinker, and glycerol phosphate salt was used both as …

Development Of Cellulose-Based, Semi-Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels As Tissue-Adhesive, Thermoresponsive, Injectable Implants, Jesse Martin

Dissertations and Theses

Abstract Development of Cellulose-Based, Semi-Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels as Tissue-Adhesive, Thermoresponsive, Injectable Implants

Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer networks with high water content and tunable mechanical properties, which have been widely investigated as replacements for soft tissues, such as the intervertebral disc (IVD). Various derivatives of the plant polysaccharide, cellulose, have been explored for use as injectable hydrogel implants. Methylcellulose (MC), which exhibits thermogelation at temperatures above 32°C, and relatively hydrophilic carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC), are versatile cellulosic polymers that have shown promise as base materials for such applications. In prior work, functionalization with methacrylate groups allowed for the formation of stable, covalently crosslinked …

A Qualitative Study Of Critical Consciousness: How Black Leaders Perceive Their Roles In The Sociopolitical Development Of Their Students, Ray Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Paulo Freire (1970) Pedagogy of the Oppressed explained how his theory of critical consciousness could liberate the low-income Brazilian workers. Freire's theory was that his people should be able to see their culture in their education and be equipped with the tools to analyze the world around them and find their sources of oppression. This research study uses Roderick J. Watts’ theory of Sociopolitical Development (SPD) is a branch of Freire's critical consciousness theory. This research study examines the critical consciousness of ten (10) Black urban school leaders by utilizing a semi-structured interview process to explore their educational and life …

Putting The "Video" Back In Video Games: Opportunities And Challenges For Visual Studies Approaches To Video Game Analysis, Francis A. Longaker Jan 2022

Putting The "Video" Back In Video Games: Opportunities And Challenges For Visual Studies Approaches To Video Game Analysis, Francis A. Longaker

Theses and Dissertations

I argue for the application of visual studies in video game analysis. This approach presents opportunities for the intersectional analysis of video game visuals as games are brought into dialogue with other visual media like film and painting. This approach also presents challenges due to ontological distinctions between different media as well as due to academic divisions regarding the study of different art and media objects. Despite the challenges presented, a visual studies approach is particularly useful as a critical window into contemporary visual culture at large.

I outline the fields of game studies and visual studies, marking their distinctions …
