Apostolic Activity Of St. James The Apostle: Leading To The Formation Of The Camino De Santiago, Remigijus Oželis

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

For pilgrims, 2021 is a Year of Saint James. This happens every few years (the last was in 2010 and the next will be in 2027), i.e. when July 25, the Day of St. James, is on Sunday. Pilgrims have been travelling to the tomb of St. James for centuries. The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) to Santiago de Compostela in Spain became a special spiritual asset of European cultural heritage following the Declaration of the Camino de Santiago by the Council of Europe on 23 October 1987, and official branches of the way have been drawn across …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Small- and intermediate-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium (KCa2.x and KCa3.1, also called SK and IK) channels are activated exclusively by a Ca2+-calmodulin gating mechanism. Wild-type KCa2.3 channels have a Ca2+ EC50 value of ∼0.3 μM, while the apparent Ca2+ sensitivity of wild-type KCa3.1 channels is ∼0.27 μM. Heterozygous genetic mutations of KCa2.3 channels have been associated with Zimmermann-Laband syndrome and idiopathic noncirrhotic portal hypertension, while KCa3.1 channel mutations were reported in hereditary xerocytosis patients. KCa2.3_S436C and KCa2.3_V450L channels with …

Theses and Dissertations

I explore two architectural photo-essays that engage with (reflecting, rebutting, questioning) the concepts of cultural heritage, particularly with regard to preserving vernacular architecture in cities with UNESCO World Heritage status—Balthazar Korab’s photo-essay “North Yemen: Land and Buildings” (1978–81) and Mario Cresci’s 1975 Italian photobook Matera: Immagini e documenti.

Afropolitan Manifestations In Contemporary African Art: Mobilizing Achille Mbembe, Petra Frank-Witt Jan 2022

Afropolitan Manifestations In Contemporary African Art: Mobilizing Achille Mbembe, Petra Frank-Witt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores Afropolitanism's conceptual-philosophical grounds and how its principles are mirrored in the arts. Achille Mbembe’s conceptualization is presented as a form of cultural cosmopolitanism, as shared by the artists presented, further distilled as a dynamic, forward-looking, emancipatory ideology that favors Africanness as open-ended signifier rather than overdetermined sign.

Communication and Media Faculty Publications

Importance: COVID-19 has disproportionately affected Black individuals in the US; however, vaccination rates among Black individuals trail those among other racial groups. This disparity is often attributed to a high level of vaccine hesitancy among Black individuals, but few studies have examined changes in vaccine hesitancy over time. Objectives: To compare changes in vaccine hesitancy between Black and White individuals in the US and to examine mechanisms that might help explain the observed differences. Design, Setting, and Participants: This survey study used 7 waves of data collected using a panel design. A total of 1200 English-speaking adults in the US …

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng Jan 2022

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research is adventurous and creative, and committed to understanding unique human experiences in specific cultural ecologies. Qualitative interviewing with Deaf participants is far more challenging for hearing researchers who do not understand sign language, and for this reason such interactions may require the use of a sign language interpreter to facilitate the interview process. However, the quality of sign language interpreter-mediated interactions is likely to be compromised due to omissions, oversights, misinterpretations or additions that may occur during translation. An unthoughtful and poor interpretation of a communicative event by a sign language interpreter during a qualitative interview with Deaf …

Children Across Societies Enforce Conventional Norms But In Culturally Variable Ways, Patricia Kanngiesser, Marie Schäfer, Esther Herrmann, Henriette Zeidler, Daniel Haun, Michael Tomasello Jan 2022

Children Across Societies Enforce Conventional Norms But In Culturally Variable Ways, Patricia Kanngiesser, Marie Schäfer, Esther Herrmann, Henriette Zeidler, Daniel Haun, Michael Tomasello

School of Psychology

Individuals in all societies conform to their cultural group’s conventional norms, from how to dress on certain occasions to how to play certain games. It is an open question, however, whether individuals in all societies actively enforce the group’s conventional norms when others break them. We investigated third-party enforcement of conventional norms in 5- to 8-y-old children (n = 376) from eight diverse small-scale and large-scale societies. Children learned the rules for playing a new sorting game and then, observed a peer who was apparently breaking them. Across societies, observer children intervened frequently to correct their misguided peer (i.e., more …

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim Jan 2022

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In Morocco, debates over English language instruction have marginalized poetry as a distinct literary genre. The shortage of poetry events arguably makes poetry teaching both daunting and intimidating. Besides fostering trust, memorization, and empathy, helping students develop a penchant for English language, as well as humanity, poetry, and narrative poetry, in particular, proffers teachers ample opportunities to fully engage students in the learning process. Not only does it awaken their senses and make them establish connections but leads them to think in a critical way about the world around them. In this paper, the teaching of narrative poetry through the …

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis Jan 2022

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In recent years, methodological and substantial progress has been made in the field of cross-cultural studies on implicit motives. We propose that cross-cultural studies on implicit motives are indispensable to understand universal and culture-specific variations in individuals’ mental processes and behavior. It is assumed that implicit motives represent the first motivational system to be shaped in a human being’s ontogeny and that they have far-reaching consequences for individuals’ development, their feelings and actions in everyday life across different cultural groups. Applying psychometrically sound measurements cross-culturally, researchers have revealed a number of universal relationships between implicit motives and psychological and behavioral …

Falling Through The Cracks: Black And South Asian Muslim Survival And Solidarity, Sarah Babar Jan 2022

Falling Through The Cracks: Black And South Asian Muslim Survival And Solidarity, Sarah Babar

Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards

Within the fractured systems and institutions that plague the US, two groups in particular have fallen through the cracks: Black and South Asian Muslims. According to a 2015 report published by human rights organization Muslim Anti Racism Collaborative, over 3.4 million Muslims currently live in the United States. Black Muslims and South Asian Muslims constitute about 20% and 60% of that population, respectively; however, both groups are disregarded and misrepresented in US discourse and media. In 1619, Black Muslim slaves were the first to bring Islam to the US and played a foundational role in the development of Islam in …

More Than Midnight Feasts?: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Enid Blyton’S Malory Towers, St. Clare’S And The Naughtiest Girl In The School Series, Rebecca Broomfield

Dissertations

Food is fundamental to life. It is also fundamental to culture; through our production, manipulation and consumption of foodstuffs, the way in which we eat has amassed a range of rituals and rules. This suggests that food can be used to indicate more than mere biological need. Food and foodways are a common occurrence throughout literature, not least children’s literature. This thesis applies gastrocriticism as a paradigm to investigate the use of food and foodways in Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers, St. Clare’s and The Naughtiest Girl school series. Gastrocriticism is an emerging form of literary criticism that considers the complex …

Examining Attitudes Toward Mental Health In Chinese Americans, Xiao Shan Jiang Jan 2022

Examining Attitudes Toward Mental Health In Chinese Americans, Xiao Shan Jiang

Psychology Honors Papers

Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the United States with Chinese Americans being the largest group within the Asian American community (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016; Pew Research Center, 2017). Previous research has found evidence that there is a reluctance in the Chinese-American community to seek mental health services due to a fear of stigma and a tendency to define psychiatric conditions in physical rather than psychological terms. Whether these tendencies differ across generations is another question to explore. This thesis looked at both Chinese-American ethnicity and participants’ age as potential influences on attitudes toward mental health …

Family Invalidation And Cognitive Flexibility Within Asian Young Adults, Jennifer Lee Jan 2022

Family Invalidation And Cognitive Flexibility Within Asian Young Adults, Jennifer Lee

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

The concept of the “invalidating environment” is a core construct of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), serving as a defining component of Linehan’s biosocial theory (1993a). In this context, the understanding and practice of validation helps to strengthen the relationship between young adults and their caregivers. Research proposes that invalidation increases emotion dysregulation and impairs cognitive processing ability (Martel and Fuchs, 2017). Cognitive flexibility, which allows individuals to adapt to distressing, changing environments, seems to play an important role in emotion regulation. Cognitive flexibility within Asian children has been studied in the context of family conflict and parental rejection (Ahn, Kim, …

The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins Jan 2022

The Importance Of Teaching Middle School Social Studies In The United States, Ian Phillip Higgins

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the state of Minnesota, the standardized testing, known as the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) test, does not have a requirement for social studies. Math, reading and sciences are all tested, but social studies is left to the wayside. All across the United States more and more school districts are placing less value on social studies, choosing to focus more time on the subjects that will either be state tested or they deem “most” useful to students in their future careers. With recent current events rocking the United States, both politically and socially, it seems that the country is becoming …

Down Syndrome And The Importance Of A Neutral Diagnosis Delivery: A Community Service Project, Hanna E. Badke, Katherine Cooley, Christine E. Luce Jan 2022

Down Syndrome And The Importance Of A Neutral Diagnosis Delivery: A Community Service Project, Hanna E. Badke, Katherine Cooley, Christine E. Luce

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome each year in the United States – with an increasing prevalence. The literature suggests that negative societal attitudes surrounding the diagnosis of Down syndrome are often reflected in the terminology used by the medical providers delivering the diagnosis and that medical providers lack training regarding appropriate counseling. Jack’s Basket is a non-profit organization that aims to celebrate babies with Down syndrome and connect families to local resources. The researchers partnered with the organization to further explore the relationship between the diagnosis delivery method and how the recipient perceives the diagnosis. Jack’s Basket …

Are Hydroxyapatite Toothpastes The Answer To Fluoride Free Patients?

Richardson, Samantha 1 and Vaughan, Kelly 2

Dental Hygiene Program, Virginia Commonwealth University

Abstract:

Objectives/Aims: With the rising trend to become more clean with our ingredient lists, we are facing more patients refusing fluoride treatments and fluoridated toothpastes. This trend has been prevalent in our younger generations due to parents only wanting the purest natural ingredients for their children and now declining fluoride application. The goal of this literature is to find a safe alternative toothpaste that will be just as effective as fluoride.

Methods: This review of literature has been …

A Decolonial Feminist Ethnography: Empowerment, Ethics And Epistemology, Jennifer Manning Jan 2022

A Decolonial Feminist Ethnography: Empowerment, Ethics And Epistemology, Jennifer Manning

Books/Book Chapters

A decolonial feminist ethnography is an empowering research methodology that can situate the knowledge, lived experiences and worldviews of ‘others’ who are often marginalised in management research, thought and practice. This methodology focuses on the importance of ethics and epistemology in shaping the methods of knowledge production while striving for empowerment in the research process. A decolonial feminist ethnography is a messy, bricolaged way of doing research. It is also an empowering methodology that draws attention to differences, inequalities and ‘otherness’. Reconfiguring critical ethnography to recognise the coloniality of power, a decolonial feminist ethnography enables researchers to consider and address …

Could Television Streaming Sites Lead The Charge For Film-Induced Tourism Post Covid?, Jennifer Stewart Jan 2022

Could Television Streaming Sites Lead The Charge For Film-Induced Tourism Post Covid?, Jennifer Stewart

Books/Book Chapters

By focusing on television film-induced tourists, this chapter will contribute to a better understanding of tourist behaviour in relation to motivations for travel to filming locations. The chapter combines, analyses, and critiques the main debates raised by key authors in relation to identifying the motivational factors that prompt site-specific film tourism as well as providing contributions from this author’s 2016 research on television film-induced tourism in Ireland. The chapter is divided into the following sections: a brief history of film and television and a review and discussion on film tourism, a breakdown of the different categories of film tourist and …

Festivals And The City: The Contested Geographies Of Urban Events, Andrew Smith, Guy Osborn, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2022

Festivals And The City: The Contested Geographies Of Urban Events, Andrew Smith, Guy Osborn, Bernadette Quinn

Books / Book chapters

This book explores how festivals and events affect urban places and public spaces, with a particular focus on their role in fostering inclusion. The ‘festivalisation’ of culture, politics and space in cities is often regarded as problematic, but this book examines the positive and negative ways that festivals affect cities by examining festive spaces as contested spaces. The book focuses on Western European cities, a particularly interesting context given the social and cultural pressures associated with high levels of in-migration and concerns over the commercialisation and privatisation of public spaces.

The key themes of this book are the quest for …

A Linguistic Analysis Of Rukiga Personal Names, Allen Asiimwe Jan 2022

A Linguistic Analysis Of Rukiga Personal Names, Allen Asiimwe

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

The goal of the paper is to provide a linguistic description of the structure of personal names in a lesser studied Bantu language of Uganda, Rukiga (JE14). Data show that Rukiga personal names are presented as lexical entities but with underlying elaborate grammatical structures derived from the syntax, morphology, phonology and the lexicon of the language. Personal names in Rukiga form a special category of nouns derived from nouns, adjectives, verbs, phrases, clauses and full sentences. This study establishes that truncation, affixal derivation, lexicalization of phrases, clauses and sentences are employed in name-formation. The study further reveals that the socio-cultural …
