Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez
Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez
The Montana English Journal
A qualitative multimodal content analysis of popular manga examined how female and male character interactions represented gender roles. An analytical tool was developed using multimodal, semiotic, social semiotic, gender, and feminist theories to understand representations of males and females in this popular media. This study showed that traditional gender norms are still present in manga, but there are some that break stereotypes. Also, in using both textual and visual elements to interpret multimodal texts, understanding of character interactions were enhanced because the intermodal interactions created new meaning. Implications suggest positive outlooks for manga being used as an educational tool by …
Understanding The Influence Of Place On Festival Making And Artistic Production In The Local Urban Festival Context, Danielle Lynch, Bernadette Quinn Dr
Understanding The Influence Of Place On Festival Making And Artistic Production In The Local Urban Festival Context, Danielle Lynch, Bernadette Quinn Dr
Articles
Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in research output on arts festivals and cultural events, and a growing focus on the role festivals play in negotiating and constructing meanings of place. However, little attention has been paid to how place shapes the process of festival making and artistic production. This paper attempts to address this shortcoming by examining the extent to which place matters to the production of festival activity and asks: how does place influence festival making and artistic production in a local arts festival context? The study is part of ongoing qualitative research into the Five Lamps …
What Improves Customer Satisfaction In Mobile Banking Apps? An Application Of Text Mining Analysis, Yun Kyung Oh, Jung-Min Kim
What Improves Customer Satisfaction In Mobile Banking Apps? An Application Of Text Mining Analysis, Yun Kyung Oh, Jung-Min Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
Consumer-generated reviews reflect consumers’ experiences and perceptions toward a product or service. In this context, we propose a text mining approach to identify factors that improve customer satisfaction in the mobile banking app service. To do so, we collect 96,140 mobile app reviews for four U.S. banks: Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, and Wells Fargo. Using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model, we first derive the critical quality dimensions such as ease of use, convenience, security, and customer support. Analysis of weekly panel data shows that positive responses to the security and convenience of mobile banking apps improve …
A Double Take On Debt: Reparations Claims And Regimes Of Visibility In A Politics Of Refusal, Vasuki Nesiah
A Double Take On Debt: Reparations Claims And Regimes Of Visibility In A Politics Of Refusal, Vasuki Nesiah
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article proposes that the concept of “odious debt” provides an especially fruitful legal framework for the Haitian and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) demands for reparations and debt severance. The concept renders visible different dimensions of the background economic order that have been constitutive of postcolonial sovereignty, and the histories of trade and aid that have engendered debt. In analyzing the work of different regimes of visibility, I have found it useful to think with Abderrahmane Sissako’s 2006 film Bamako, and the world of Wakanda in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (2018)—two films that work through the stakes of visibility, recognition, and …

This article presents a theory-driven framework and ‘how-to’ practical strategies for utilizing team-teaching methodology through web-based delivery platforms. Content focuses on student participation and active learning, curriculum- and technology-related issues, and challenges inherent in synchronous web-based course delivery.
Structural Tightness And Social Conformity: Varying The Source Of External Influence, Lance W. Roberts, Edward D. Boldt, Anne Guest
Structural Tightness And Social Conformity: Varying The Source Of External Influence, Lance W. Roberts, Edward D. Boldt, Anne Guest
Great Plains Sociologist
This study reconceptualizes the term structural tightness in order to clarify the equivocal empirical findings in cross-cultural conformity research. Structural tightness is defined as the ability to impose collective role expectations on members of a community. The results often exploratory test of the theoretical proposal are reported and the implications for fiuture research are discussed. In general, the findings suggest that further investigation of the theoretical proposal is warranted. Researchers working within the social structure and personality framework continue to generate useful pure and applied research hypotheses (House, 1981; Spenner, 1988; Turner, 1988). Such advances are sustained by research that …

Use Of Magnetic Iron-Coated Halloysite Nanotubes In Cell Growth, Differentiation, And Combating Cancerous Growth, Christopher Daniel Candler
Use Of Magnetic Iron-Coated Halloysite Nanotubes In Cell Growth, Differentiation, And Combating Cancerous Growth, Christopher Daniel Candler
Master's Theses
Magnetic Halloysite Nanotubes can be used in multiple ways in combating growth of osteosarcoma. The adsorption ability of the inner and outer surfaces of halloysite nanotubes allows for attachment of different molecules, including anti-cancer drugs, polymer layering for controlled drug release, and magnetic coating. This magnetic coating would allow for cell membrane disruption, hyperthermia, and for targeting of specific tissue. In this project, the goal was to create these magnetic nanotubes and test their cytotoxicity against stem cells and osteosarcoma cells.
To create these magnetic nanotubes, we used electrodeposition to adsorb ferrous oxide nanoparticles (FeNPs) onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to …
Research On Ternary Brand Trust Components In The Inter-Sphere Culture Context: Chinese Brands In Indian Market, Yan Han
Fordham Dissertations and Theses
In the information age, the cultural perspectives associated with brand trust have undergone fundamental changes. Hyperconnectivity in the digital era has transformed social interaction between consumers and firms, leading to the creation of a sphere between the digital spheres where brands construct cultural meaning and thereby influence community members in the spheres. This sphere is dynamic, and perpetually influenced by technology to reach an equilibrium where an inter-sphere cultural phenomenon is formed. The high volume and velocity of information generated with technological advances have led to the blurring and broadening of brand boundaries to create mega-sized brand communities, …

Emotion And Wellness Profiles Of Herbal Drinks Measured Using Different Questionnaire Designs, Pannapa Hanmontree, Witoon Prinyawiwatkul, Amporn Sae-Eaw
Faculty Publications
The emotion and wellness profiles of herbal drinks were assessed using six different questionnaire designs. The questionnaire designs were constructed from two formats of questionnaire items, including words and sentences, and three types of measuring scales, including a rating scale (5-point intensity; 1 = ‘not at all’, 5 = ‘extremely’), a checklist scale (check-all-that-apply, CATA), and a combination of CATA and rating scales (rate-all-that-apply, RATA; 5-point intensity; 1 = ‘slightly’, 5 = ‘extremely’). The 39 emotional terms of the EsSense Profile® and the 45 wellness terms of the WellSense Profile™ were translated into Thai, then screened for relevance to herbal …
Building Librarians’ Research Skills Through Experiential Learning, Raeda K. Anderson, Katherine Fisher, Emily Williams, George Usmanov
Building Librarians’ Research Skills Through Experiential Learning, Raeda K. Anderson, Katherine Fisher, Emily Williams, George Usmanov
Georgia Library Quarterly
Experiential learning programs are an effective method to teach data-focused research skills and statistical analysis. We examine the effects of a participatory research training program developed and executed by a data librarian and administered to library employees at a large academic library. The program aimed to improve research skills and increase research productivity. This study employs a survey within a concurrent mixed methods methodological framework to examine the outcomes of the training program. Our findings show that the program served as a low-cost, short-term, effective method of teaching data collection and quantitative analysis that increased participants’ knowledge of the research …
Discrimination, Psychological Well-Being, And Racial Importance In U.S. Native-Born And Caribbean Black Americans, Jaime E. Mccaw
Discrimination, Psychological Well-Being, And Racial Importance In U.S. Native-Born And Caribbean Black Americans, Jaime E. Mccaw
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Objective: The present study examines the experiences of perceived discrimination and psychological well-being among two non-Hispanic Black American ethnic groups, Black Americans whose sole known country of origin is the United States and Black Americans with Caribbean heritage. Lifetime and everyday discrimination, life dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, hopelessness, and psychological distress are explored for each group. The impact of racial identity importance on each of these experiences is explored through self-identification with an identity that is defined racially or nationally (e.g., Black, American, or both equally), and the interaction between ethnicity and sex is considered.
Methods: Data are from adults recruited …

‘Before Anything Else, I Am A Person’. Listening To The Epistemological Standpoints Of Im/Migrant Youth, Anne Ríos-Rojas, Reva Jaffe-Walter
Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works
Feminists of colour have attuned us to the epistemologies arising from the social, cultural and structural ‘standpoints’ of marginalised communities. Building on this insight, this paper attends to how the racialising regimes of state power targeting migrant youth of colour render their bodies as central sites for generating new knowledge. Drawing on ethnographic research with im/migrants youth in Catalonia, Spain, and in Denmark, this paper explores what the ‘epistemological standpoints of migrant youth’—whose bodies must daily endure racialising public surveillance and bear the burden of collective worries about nations’ futures—can teach us about knowledge-making and about opportunities therein for resistance …

Spatial Epidemiology: An Empirical Framework For Syndemics Research, Shikhar Shrestha, Cici X C Bauer, Brian Hendricks, Thomas J Stopka
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Syndemics framework describes two or more co-occurring epidemics that synergistically interact with each other and the complex structural social forces that sustain them leading to excess disease burden. The term syndemic was first used to describe the interaction between substance abuse, violence, and AIDS by Merrill Singer. A broader range of syndemic studies has since emerged describing the framework's applicability to other public health scenarios. With syndemic theory garnering significant attention, the focus is shifting towards developing robust empirical analytical approaches. Unfortunately, the complex nature of the disease-disease interactions nested within several social contexts complicates empirical analyses. In answering the …

Gay Boy And Playboy Revues: Constructing U.S. Queer Collectivities In Networks Of Peripatetic Burlesque And Nightclub Drag Performers, 1933–1939, Kalle Westerling
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Across the United States, in the mid-1930s, drag made a transition, along with much other entertainment, from vaudeville into night clubs. There, concomitant with developing notions of gender and sexuality, it became increasingly associated with the contemporary expressions of drag that we see today in popular television shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and in gay nightclubs across the country. In short, it became the queer form of entertainment. But in the 1930s, with such developing notions of gender and sexuality, it was not as easy as saying that it was a gay art form. Rather, as heterosexuality and heteronormativity took …

Committed To The Fragment: Feminist Literature And The Promise Of Wellness, Lynne Beckenstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“I have never been able to blind myself” to the cruelty of a world that “destroys its own young in passing…out of not noticing or caring about the destruction,” Audre Lorde tells us in her 1980 “mythobiography” Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. This quality, Lorde says, “according to one popular definition of mental health, makes me mentally unhealthy.” In rejecting psychological self-possession as a sign of wellness, this passage also rejects it as one of sovereignty’s conditions. At the time of Lorde’s writing, this version of sovereignty already dominated the landscape of therapeutic culture in the United States, …
A Girl Is A Thing: Dramaturgies Of Objects And Nature In Contemporary Choreography, Fidan Akinci
A Girl Is A Thing: Dramaturgies Of Objects And Nature In Contemporary Choreography, Fidan Akinci
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation investigates the expansion of performative possibilities toward and through nonhumans in contemporary choreography as a feminist inquiry. I research the upsurge of performing objects and natural matter in contemporary choreography by questioning what kind of bodies other than humans can move, and what kind of affects and expressions they offer beyond more familiar and anthropocentric possibilities. I link this challenge to the humanistic limits of performance with the feminist interrogations on agency and objectification to fully explore the political stakes of mobilizing with the nonhuman. To that end, I put the feminist trajectories in posthumanism, new materialism, and …
Control, Allegiance, And Shame In Male Qing Dynasty Hairstyles, Carolle Pinkerton
Control, Allegiance, And Shame In Male Qing Dynasty Hairstyles, Carolle Pinkerton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is about the politicization of hairstyles in imperial China. They indicated conformity with social norms, or rebellion against them. This was especially true under the country’s last dynasty. The Manchu conquerors imposed their own hairstyle, the queue, on their Han Chinese subjects to make their rule palpable to China’s illiterate millions. “Hair martyrs” who refused to accept this “barbarous” hairstyle were ruthlessly eliminated. The Manchus had feared assimilation into the much larger Han population. But the introduction of one uniform male hair style for both Manchus and Han blurred the lines between the two groups. In this way …

Queer And Trans Prison Voices: A Podcast Archive On Prison Abolition, Josefine Ziebell
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This capstone project is located at the intersection of Critical Prison Studies, Gender Studies, Sound Studies, and American Studies. It highlights the importance of sonic modes of anti-carceral resistance by featuring the recorded voices of incarcerated people through the creation of a sonic archive of prison writings. By integrating that sonic archive into the podcast medium, this project functions as a digital archive for incarcerated voices, consisting of two tracks: a collection of short-spoken readings by queer and transgender incarcerated authors, and podcast-style interviews with activist scholars, organizations, and sound artists working towards prison abolition. In this paper, I establish …
