The Relationship Between Masculinity & Friendships: A Thematic Analysis On The Qualities Of Male Friendships, Dulshi Fernando, Valeria Aguilera, Kristin Vierra, Diana Gutierrez Apr 2022

The Relationship Between Masculinity & Friendships: A Thematic Analysis On The Qualities Of Male Friendships, Dulshi Fernando, Valeria Aguilera, Kristin Vierra, Diana Gutierrez

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Certain masculinity norms such as toughness, emotional stoicism, and homophobia appear to be barriers to forming intimate friendships between boys and men.

Boys and men who do not successfully build close connections may experience low self-esteem and impaired psychological health.

Boys and men who effectively build intimate relationships benefit from peer support and companionship as well as a decrease in anxiety and depression levels.

Scholars have yet to conduct a meta-synthesis exploring the relation between masculinity and friendship.

An Exploratory Study Of K-12 Music Educators’ Use Of The Online Crowdfunding Platform Donorschoose, Joesef Hanson

Visions of Research in Music Education

Music educators contending with resource insufficiency have developed novel ways of acquiring assets. The advent of internet-based crowdfunding, where individual teachers directly solicit contributions from personal and professional associates, now stands as the most frequentlyemployed means of finding external sources of funding for teaching projects. The purpose of this study was to explore K-12 music educators’ use of one such crowdfunding web site, DonorsChoose.org, to obtain resources to support their teaching endeavors. Participants comprised a sample of teachers (n = 102) running campaigns on DonorsChoose.org in January and February of 2019. The majority of participants were females teaching elementary or …

Teaching Back: Navigating Oppressive Encounters In Music Teacher Education, Juliet Hess Apr 2022

Teaching Back: Navigating Oppressive Encounters In Music Teacher Education, Juliet Hess

Visions of Research in Music Education

This article explores the possibility that preservice teachers may encounter oppressive ideas during their education. I draw upon a teaching opportunity provoked by a guest speaker who utilized salvationist and deficit discourses when presenting to undergraduate music education students. Focusing on my pedagogical response to the situation which included careful consideration of salvationism, I employ autoethnography to reflect upon this experience through a theoretical framework of anti-colonialism and anti-racism. Data examined includes my teaching journal about the experience and students’ unmediated written responses to a writing prompt about the presentation completed in five minutes the following day. The discussion section …

Application And Validation Of Heterogram Analysis On Individualism-Collectivism Data Across Three Countries, Alvin Hwang, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Application And Validation Of Heterogram Analysis On Individualism-Collectivism Data Across Three Countries, Alvin Hwang, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

The prevalent method to analyze data from several groups of individuals is to define some ad hoc boundaries of individuals-for example geographic, ethnic or gender boundaries and then compare statistical means and deviations between groups. This method assumes homogeneity within each ad hoc group and treats differences among individuals in each group as subgroup variations. Instead of imposing ad-hoc boundaries, we used a new method "heterogram analysis" (Maruyama, 1999) that looks for response datagenerated grouping of individuals and the meaningfulness of each emerging group. This approach was applied to individual-level individualism-collectivism data from three countries. The results showed five individual …

From Handmaids To Princesses: How Identity And Politics Impact Definitions Of Biblical Rape, Gabrielle R. Isaac-Herzog Apr 2022

From Handmaids To Princesses: How Identity And Politics Impact Definitions Of Biblical Rape, Gabrielle R. Isaac-Herzog

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

The politics of sex in the Bible are complex. They are impacted and limited by the time of the stories, as well as the political landscape and laws of the region. However, since many modern religions have emerged from the text of the Hebrew Bible, it is important for scholars to continue the work of critically examining the texts in the contemporary context. This paper offers a textual analysis of several biblical stories through a feminist and decolonial lens. Through the generation of a taxonomy by which these stories can be categorized, this paper posits that the biblical definitions of …

Unknowable Truths: The Incompleteness Theorems And The Rise Of Modernism, Caroline Tvardy Apr 2022

Unknowable Truths: The Incompleteness Theorems And The Rise Of Modernism, Caroline Tvardy

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

This thesis evaluates the function of the current history of mathematics methodologies and explores ways in which historiographical methodologies could be successfully implemented in the field. Traditional approaches to the history of mathematics often lack either an accurate portrayal of the social and cultural influences of the time, or they lack an effective usage of mathematics discussed. This paper applies a holistic methodology in a case study of Kurt Gödel’s influential work in logic during the Interwar period and the parallel rise of intellectual modernism. In doing so, the proofs for Gödel’s Completeness and Incompleteness theorems will be discussed as …

Psilocybin Psychotherapy With Acceptance And Commitment Therapy: A Potential Treatment For Social Anxiety Disorder, Elliot Sandberg Apr 2022

Psilocybin Psychotherapy With Acceptance And Commitment Therapy: A Potential Treatment For Social Anxiety Disorder, Elliot Sandberg

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) require effective therapeutic interventions. Due to the nature of SAD, individuals tend to not seek care for their treatment, leading to the continuation of avoidance behaviors that significantly impact their daily existence. Psilocybin psychotherapy has the potential to lead to significant changes in the personality structure of individuals as well as reducing anxious responses to their environment in a relatively short period of time. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) can serve as the ideal therapeutic backing to psilocybin as it emphasizes mindfulness and psychological flexibility, both of which aid in the therapeutic mechanisms …

Do Parents’ Emotions Affect Their Preschoolers’? A Cross Cultural Study, Vanity Hernandez, Emma Dalton, Ainsley Burchette, Zoe Raba

Science Seminar

Past research has found that Native Americans are more susceptible to depression and, therefore, suicide. The present study investigated the effects that parental stress and depression have on their preschoolers’ stress problems and whether there is a difference between Native American and European American parents’ effects on their respective children. All participants (N = 248) completed surveys measuring their parenting stress and depression, as well as their child’s behavior relating to stress. A significant difference was not found between Native and European American children’s stress problems. However, we did find a significant difference between parental depression in that Native parents …

Neither Trumps Nor Interests: Rights, Pluralism, And The Recovery Of Constitutional Judgment, Paul Linden-Retek Apr 2022

Neither Trumps Nor Interests: Rights, Pluralism, And The Recovery Of Constitutional Judgment, Paul Linden-Retek

Cleveland State Law Review

This Article develops a novel framework for the adjudication of rights in an age of partisan and societal polarization. In so doing, it defends judicial review in a divided polity on new grounds. The Article makes two broad interventions.

First, the Article cautions against recent calls to shift rights adjudication in the United States from Dworkinian categoricalism toward proportionality analysis. Such calls correctly identify how categoricalism, by embracing the absolute nature of rights as “trumps,” pits citizens harshly against one another. The problem, however, is that proportionality’s proponents fail to see how it imposes a rights absolutism of its own. …

"Standing In The Gap": Combating Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Hayley N. Carter Apr 2022

"Standing In The Gap": Combating Sexual Abuse In The Protestant Church, Hayley N. Carter

Honors Projects

Sexual abuse in the Christian Church has been a problem for many decades, and scholars have written extensively about sexual abuse occurring in the Catholic Church. However, abuse occurring in the Protestant Church has not been given that same attention. In 2017, the #MeToo movement went viral and has inspired many sexual abuse survivors to share their stories. I will argue that the Protestant Church should acknowledge the #MeToo movement’s accomplishments, and that this acknowledgement would lead to positive changes in how it approaches sexual abuse. I also will discuss financial abuse, which is a correlating behavior along with sexual …

Addressing Land (In)Justice Through Data Collection In Partnership With Land In Common, Audrey Aberg, Alex Culver-Witt, Jonathan Walker

Community Engaged Research Reports

In this report we aim to explore and visualize the types of land injustices in the state of Maine in partnership with Land in Common For centuries, Maine has undergone various forms of inequity regarding minority groups and their land. Land in Common is a community land whose mission seeks “to develop a durable, state-wide, democratically run cooperative structure for the ownership, care, and equitable distribution of land in Maine.” Under this umbrella, Land in Common creates affordable housing by separating land from development and bringing it under common ownership. Another important piece of Land in Common’s mission is to …

The Impact Of Career And Interpersonal Relationships On Subjective Well-Being, Melissa Lomuscio Apr 2022

The Impact Of Career And Interpersonal Relationships On Subjective Well-Being, Melissa Lomuscio

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

My thesis explores the concepts of career and interpersonal relationships and their impact on subjective well-being. Career and interpersonal relationships are two of the most time-consuming and important aspects of human life. Given this, they have some of the largest influences on our well-being and levels of happiness. In order to understand how to use these two variables to positively impact our well-being, we must first understand their role in our well-being in general and how they affect it. For this thesis, I explore this relationship through a series of 32 interviews, where interviewees are asked about their career paths …

2017 Tax Cuts And Jobs Act And Its Effect On Vertical Equity For Homeowners, Melanie Auclair

Honors Projects in Accounting

Data from the Internal Revenue Service's Statistics of Income (SOI) was analyzed to compare the tax subsidy for homeowners from filing year 2018 (for calendar year 2017) and filing year 2019 (for calendar year 2018). Homeowner tax benefits were calculated with an extensive analysis to understand how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changes affected homeowner tax benefits on a vertical equity basis. Prior research has shown homeowner tax benefits are regressive in nature. The primary research question in this study is whether TCJA increased or decreased regressivity of homeowner tax benefits. The results of this study have shown that …

Using Sociolinguistics And Literary Studies To Understand Code-Switching Within Works By Louise Erdrich, Bruno Santic Apr 2022

Using Sociolinguistics And Literary Studies To Understand Code-Switching Within Works By Louise Erdrich, Bruno Santic

Undergraduate Theses

There exists a multitude of definitions and concepts that describe the movement between and from one linguistic code to the next, commonly referred to as code-switching. Each definition given differs not only between fields of research but also within said fields of research, making it incredibly difficult to create one unified definition for code-switching. The two most popular fields of research that have extensively studied code-switching are sociolinguistics and literature/literary studies, with both fields having basic tenets of study that create different nuances in how code-switching is described by researchers in each respective field of study. One of the key …

Latin American Film, Mirna Vohnsen

Articles

The scholarship on Latin American film in 2020 points to a diverse and vibrant field of study that encompasses a wide range of themes. This year, the representations of indigenous peoples, as well as the studies on youth and transnationalism, have caught the attention of several scholars. Another topic that has gained importance is the revisiting of films, filmmakers, and performers from the twentieth century. Volume 17, number 2, of Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas, which is devoted to Mexican documentaries from the last century, is a poignant example of this development. Aside from these topics, gender and …

Identity Formation And The Immigrant Experience, Renne Cabacungan Apr 2022

Identity Formation And The Immigrant Experience, Renne Cabacungan

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Immigration history is an especially prominent aspect of an immigrant’s identity. Immigration creates psychosocial changes which can impact how an individual is viewed by themselves and others. Immigrants develop a dual identity, drawing from both their new country and their country of origin. Navigating this binary lies at the heart of an immigrant’s identity development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the personal processes one undergoes during immigration in forming one’s new identity. Qualitative interviews were conducted with two participants of different nationalities. A life course theory approach structured the two interviews to create a comprehensive timeline of …
