Mentoring Underrepresented Black Male Students In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math, Keith A. Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractUnderrepresented Black men entering the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career fields are expected to receive fewer than 6% of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in these fields. In addition, a lack of attention has been given to social capital as a function related to increased self-efficacy obtained through minority mentoring and enrichment programs. This phenomenological study aimed to show the lived experiences of Black male undergraduate students who used STEM mentoring and enrichment programs to increase their self-efficacy and development of social capital. The theoretical framework for this study was Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and Putman’s theory of social …

The effectiveness of the student conduct approaches of the mixed method model, a mixture of restorative justice and traditional sanctioning, and traditional sanctioning, known as the “model code,” in student learning at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) has been largely unexamined in existing literature. This quantitative study examined whether the model code process or a mixed method model process is more effective and efficient in producing learning and accountability. The present study utilized the 28-item questionnaire from the Student Accountability and Restorative Research (STARR) Project, a multicampus study conducted in 2011 in the United States. The Relationship Between Types Of Workplace Trauma Exposure, Burnout, And Ptsd In Mental Health Workers, Armando Dominguez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Work-related traumatic exposure has been studied but has not been concisely defined in the widest range of research studying trauma exposure. Specifically, it is not known from previous research whether direct, indirect, and vicarious trauma exposure predict burnout and PTSD in acute care mental health care workers. The emotional processing theory was used as theoretical foundation informing this study as the habituation of response to stress and trauma has been shown to occur incidentally and cumulatively; the theory supports the concept of dichotomous and continuous type of trauma exposure over time. The purpose of this study was to use a …

Perceived Discrimination As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Allostatic Load And Asthma Control, Vera Kern
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While asthma prevalence in the United States is generally declining, African Americans tend to experience poorer outcomes regarding asthma severity and control. The purpose of the present study was to test whether discrimination (everyday and lifetime) moderated the relationship between allostatic load and asthma severity/asthma control (dyspnea and peak flow). In previous literature, researchers established the relationship between allostatic load and asthma severity/asthma control among African Americans. The biopsychosocial model and allostatic load theory served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. In this cross-sectional, nonexperimental, quantitative design, 201 African Americans between the ages of 34 and 82 years were …

Relationship Dynamics, Sexual Practices, And Hiv Risk Of Black Behaviorally Bisexual Women, Dajaneil S. Mccree
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk that exists among women who have sex with women and men (WSWM) is influenced by behavioral factors related to condom use and penetrative sex with sex toys and body parts. Although women represent a large percentage in HIV diagnoses, research has lacked in determining the sexual behaviors that exist behind health-related risks of young women who have sex with women (WSW) and HIV. This study fills the gap in literature in HIV prevention and testing interventions for WSWM by representing Black young adult WSWM in behavioral research, identifying how their lived experiences in relationships …

Hospitalized, adult, oncology patients experience intractable pain that does not always respond to pharmacological therapies. Reiki is a complementary and alternative method used to reduce pain and increase the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments, but nurses may not possess knowledge about Reiki or have the self-efficacy to educate patients about Reiki. The purpose of this study, guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, was to identify the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, level of self-efficacy in educating their patients, beliefs about Reiki’s effectiveness, years practicing as a nurse, and willingness to recommend Reiki for their oncology patients’ pain. The Knowledge of Nurses’ Questionnaire …

Blood-borne pathogens (BBPs) are an occupational risk confronted by many health care workers. Nurses are routinely exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency virus. A literature review, which included retrieval of peer-reviewed quantitative articles, systematic reviews, and mixed-methods studies published between 2014 and 2021 supported the need for nurses to be knowledgeable about prevention of BBP exposures and the processes to follow after an incident. The project aimed to educate staff nurses on the best practices for preventing the risk for and transmission of BBPs. Increased knowledge is needed among long-term care facility staff members regarding end-of-life care services. There is a gap in staff knowledge regarding how to initiate education about these care services with patients and family members and how these services impact patient care and health outcomes, especially among the African American residents in long-term care facilities. The practice-focused question addressed in this project was whether staff education increased the staff members’ knowledge about end-of-life care and how to initiate conversations with African American patients and families on available services.
