Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present the PERCEPT-R corpus, a labeled corpus of child speakers of American English with typical speech and residual speech sound disorders affecting rhotics. We demonstrate the utility of age-and-gender normalized formants extracted from PERCEPT-R in training support vector classifiers to predict ground-truth perceptual judgments of “rhotic” (i.e., dialect-typical) and clinical “derhotic”/ɹ/for novel speakers (mean of participant-specific f-metrics=.83; SD =.18, N = 281).

Srf Cavity Fault Classification And Prediction At Jefferson Lab, Chris Tennant, Adam Carpenter, Lasitha Vidyaratne, Md. Monibor Rahman, Khan Iftekharuddin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Over the last few years several machine learning projects at Jefferson Lab have had a common focus to optimize operation of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). In this talk we highlight work to identify and classify types of faults from C100-type cavities and then to extend those capabilities to provide real-time fault prediction. Early prediction may enable mitigation strategies to prevent some types of faults. In our approach we apply a two-step fault prediction pipeline. In the first step, a model distinguishes between faulty and normal signals. In the second step, signals flagged …

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become a foundation for most location-based services and navigation systems, such as autonomous vehicles, drones, ships, and wearable devices. However, it is a challenge to verify if the reported geographic locations are valid due to various GPS spoofing tools. Pervasive tools, such as Fake GPS, Lockito, and software-defined radio, enable ordinary users to hijack and report fake GPS coordinates and cheat the monitoring server without being detected. Furthermore, it is also a challenge to get accurate sensor readings on mobile devices because of the high noise level introduced by commercial motion sensors. To this …

Spectrum Sensing With Energy Detection In Multiple Alternating Time Slots, Călin Vlădeanu, Alexandru Marţian, Dimitrie C. Popescu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy detection (ED) represents a low complexity approach used by secondary users (SU) to sense spectrum occupancy by primary users (PU) in cognitive radio (CR) systems. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that senses the spectrum occupancy by performing ED in K consecutive sensing time slots starting from the current slot and continuing by alternating before and after the current slot. We consider a PU traffic model specified in terms of an average duty cycle value, and derive analytical expressions for the false alarm probability (FAP) and correct detection probability (CDP) for any value of K . Our …

Physical layer security has attracted lots of attention with the expansion of wireless devices to the edge networks in recent years. Due to limited authentication mechanisms, MAC spoofing attack, also known as the identity attack, threatens wireless systems. In this paper, we study a new type of MAC spoofing attack, the virtual MAC spoofing attack, in a tight environment with strong spatial similarities, which can create multiple counterfeits entities powered by the virtualization technologies to interrupt regular services. We develop a system to effectively detect such virtual MAC spoofing attacks via the deep learning method as a countermeasure. …

To improve the power consumption of parallel applications at the runtime, modern processors provide frequency scaling and power limiting capabilities. In this work, a runtime strategy is proposed to maximize performance under a given power budget by distributing the available power according to the relative GPU utilization. Time series forecasting methods were used to develop workload prediction models that provide accurate prediction of GPU utilization during application execution. Experiments were performed on a multi-GPU computing platform DGX-1 equipped with eight NVIDIA V100 GPUs used for quantum chemistry calculations in the GAMESS package. For a limited power budget, the proposed strategy …

Entropy Of Generating Series For Nonlinear Input-Output Systems And Their Interconnections, W. Steven Gray Jan 2022

Entropy Of Generating Series For Nonlinear Input-Output Systems And Their Interconnections, W. Steven Gray

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper has two main objectives. The first is to introduce a notion of entropy that is well suited for the analysis of nonlinear input-output systems that have a Chen-Fliess series representation. The latter is defined in terms of its generating series over a noncommutative alphabet. The idea is to assign an entropy to a generating series as an element of a graded vector space. The second objective is to describe the entropy of generating series originating from interconnected systems of Chen-Fliess series that arise in the context of control theory. It is shown that one set of interconnections can …

Deep learning (DL) models have provided the state-of-the-art performance in a wide variety of medical imaging benchmarking challenges, including the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenges. However, the task of focal pathology multi-compartment segmentation (e.g., tumor and lesion sub-regions) is particularly challenging, and potential errors hinder the translation of DL models into clinical workflows. Quantifying the reliability of DL model predictions in the form of uncertainties, could enable clinical review of the most uncertain regions, thereby building trust and paving the way towards clinical translation. Recently, a number of uncertainty estimation methods have been introduced for DL medical image segmentation tasks. …

Can Continuing Legal Education Pass The Test? Empirical Lessons From The Medical World., Rima Sirota

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) takes millions of hours and hundreds of millions of dollars from American lawyers every year, with the burden landing in disproportionate fashion on new lawyers, public interest lawyers, and solo practitioners. CLE proponents insist that the system protects the public by maintaining lawyer competence. In the forty-five years since the first jurisdictions began requiring CLE, no evidence has emerged in support of this claim.

This Article argues that mandatory CLE is indefensible in its current state. Either the legal profession and the CLE industry must commit to study and change, or it is time to …

Who gets to decide what counts as law? The weight of authority in the U.S. legal system is governed almost entirely by unwritten rules—social norms that establish which sources have weight (and how much weight they have). In 2016, Bryan A. Garner and twelve judges published a treatise essentially codifying unwritten rules related to the operation of precedent. That book, The Law of Judicial Precedent, has itself become a source of authority (on legal authority), cited by judges across jurisdictions. In this essay, I question whether the judicial norms governing the operation of precedent are appropriately presented as definitive blackletter …

House Rules: Congress And The Attorney-Client Privilege, David Rapallo

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 2020, the Supreme Court rendered a landmark decision in Trump v. Mazars establishing four factors for determining the validity of congressional subpoenas for a sitting president’s personal papers. In an unanticipated move, Chief Justice John Roberts added that recipients of congressional subpoenas have “long been understood” to retain not only constitutional privileges, but common law privileges developed by judges, including the attorney-client privilege. This was particularly surprising since Trump was not relying on the attorney-client privilege and the Court had never treated this common law privilege as overriding Congress’s Article I power to set its own procedures for conducting …

Soft Law, Risk Cultures, And Law Abidingness: The Caremark Connection, Donald C. Langevoort

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

As Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, Chief Justice, and recidivist law review author, Leo Strine has had much to say about the often-frustrating effort at corporate behavior modification. One point he makes very insistently is that pursuant to their state-granted charters, corporations are authorized to take part only in lawful business, not any profitable business. Respect for life-giving law is thus a necessary corollary of good corporate citizenship. But good citizenship is so hard to instill, which irks him. An angry display of this is Strine’s Delaware Supreme Court dissenting opinion in City of Birmingham Retirement System v. Good, involving Duke …

Health Risk Perceptions Regarding Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (Ends) Among Individuals With Respiratory Illnes, Sarah Ann Sebban

Theses and Dissertations

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also known as electronic cigarettes, are portable battery-powered devices used to smoke or “vape” a flavored solution which usually contains nicotine. Many national organizations (CDC, AMA, AAFP, ALA, AHA) have recognized the alarmingly increased rates of ENDS use in the United States, especially among certain populations. Those most likely to engage in ENDS use are youth and young adults, and adults who already smoke combustible cigarettes. Many people perceive ENDS use as a healthier alternative to smoking regular cigarettes and thus, are more willing to initiate ENDS use. However, research has indicated that ENDS use …

Lawyering Paradoxes: Making Meaning Of The Contradictions, Susan P. Sturm Jan 2022

Lawyering Paradoxes: Making Meaning Of The Contradictions, Susan P. Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

Effective lawyering requires the ability to manage contradictory yet interdependent practices. In their role as traditionally understood, lawyers must fight, judge, debate, minimize risk, and advance clients’ interests. Yet increasingly, lawyers must ALSO collaborate, build trust, innovate, enable effective risk-taking, and hold clients accountable for adhering to societal values. Law students and lawyers alike struggle, often unproductively, to reconcile these tensions. Law schools often address them as a dilemma requiring a choice or overlook the contradictions that interfere with their integration.

This Article argues instead that these seemingly contradictory practices can be brought together through the theory and action of …

Faculty Scholarship

Interest is growing in seaweed cultivation and sequestration as a carbon dioxide removal strategy. This white paper explores the barriers to seaweed permitting for carbon sequestration in California, including a complex, costly, and time-consuming lease and permitting process. Other states in the U.S., namely Maine and Alaska, have permitting systems designed to be more supportive of seaweed cultivation. This paper describes the legal framework for seaweed cultivation permitting in California and discusses the permitting systems in Maine and Alaska. The paper then explores possible reforms to streamline California’s permitting process, while maintaining appropriate environmental and other safeguards.
