Healthcare Provider Education For Recognizing And Assisting Victims Of Human Trafficking, Haley Nicole Fisher Jan 2022

Healthcare Provider Education For Recognizing And Assisting Victims Of Human Trafficking, Haley Nicole Fisher

Nursing

Human trafficking has increasing prevalence in the United States (U.S.) with an estimated 1.6 million people trafficked at any time. Healthcare systems are one of the most critical access points for identifying and recognizing victims of human trafficking. Unfortunately, a majority of healthcare providers have never received training on human trafficking. There are approximately 835 nurse practitioners (NPs) within North Dakota (ND). With increasing prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S., education for healthcare providers must be provided to aid in the fight against human trafficking. The purpose of this practice improvement project (PIP) was to increase NP perceived knowledge …

Assessment Of Health Literacy And Preferred Learning Style Of Patients In A Rural North Dakota Primary Care Clinic, Cassie Rose Holt Jan 2022

Assessment Of Health Literacy And Preferred Learning Style Of Patients In A Rural North Dakota Primary Care Clinic, Cassie Rose Holt

Nursing

Individuals with low health literacy face many difficulties within the healthcare system, including seeking medical care in inappropriate places, foregoing appointments and preventative health screenings, and misunderstanding self-care instructions. This leads to more hospitalizations, increased healthcare expenses, and use of healthcare resources. Low health literacy is especially significant in rural populations, where there are additional barriers to healthcare such as geography, distance, weather, inadequate financial resources and lower socioeconomic status, and lack of primary care and specialty providers. Furthermore, providers often do not consider patients’ preferred learning styles, which may be significant for those who have difficulty understanding instructions. Patient …

Understanding The Role Of Rage In Cell Adhesion, Swetha Thiyagarajan Jan 2022

Understanding The Role Of Rage In Cell Adhesion, Swetha Thiyagarajan

Pharmacy

The Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGE) is a mammalian specific cell surface receptor. RAGE consists of three extracellular domains (V, C1, and C2), a transmembrane domain, and an intracellular cytoplasmic tail. RAGE has a significant role in human pathogenesis, including neurodegenerative diseases, diabetic complications, and certain cancers. Deregulation of cell adhesion is one of the contributing cellular events common in many of the above listed human pathologies and might be mediated via RAGE signaling. In our study, we aimed to understand the role of RAGE in cell adhesion and to define the importance of the different domains of RAGE …

Colorectal Cancer: Increasing Awareness Of Screening In A Rural North Dakota Community, Karissa Rahnelle Gladen Jan 2022

Colorectal Cancer: Increasing Awareness Of Screening In A Rural North Dakota Community, Karissa Rahnelle Gladen

Nursing

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet only 67% of the eligible population have received screening. Preventative CRC screenings help to reduce mortality and allow CRC to be found at the pre-cancerous or early stages, when the disease is highly curable. The purpose of this clinical dissertation project was to determine whether providing an educational booth with informational handouts and informational PowerPoint set on loop for adults ages 18-75 in the rural community of Grafton, ND increased knowledge and intent regarding CRC screening, as well as assisted to better understand barriers …

Bkca-Ip3r Decoupling In Hypertension, Sayeman Islam Niloy Jan 2022

Bkca-Ip3r Decoupling In Hypertension, Sayeman Islam Niloy

Pharmacy

Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and a leading cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. Dysregulation of intracellular Ca2+ in vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cells is one major contributor to the development of vascular hypercontractility and remodeling in hypertension. Plasma membrane (PM)-localized large-conductance, Ca2+-activated K+ (BKCa) channels prevent hypercontractility through membrane hyperpolarization in response to vasoconstrictor-induced activation of inositol trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs), localized on the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). However, loss of close contact or coupling between BKCa and IP3R may diminish the BKCa-mediated protection against hypercontractility and hypertrophy and contribute to the development of hypertension. The overall …

Childhood Obesity Prevention: Infant Nutrition And Feeding Education, Candace Mecklenburg Jan 2022

Childhood Obesity Prevention: Infant Nutrition And Feeding Education, Candace Mecklenburg

Nursing

Childhood obesity is a global concern, as of 2020 it affected 39 million children under the age of five. Obesity increases the risk of developing many health problems, including type-2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma, sleep apnea, and others. Overweight and obese children are more likely to become obese adolescents and adults. Once obesity occurs, it is likely to persist as achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is more challenging. Many of the diseases related to obesity are now developing in children and adolescence. Preventing obesity from occurring has the most promising effect on tackling the issue. Researchers have found …

The Complexity Of Understanding Online Product Evaluation Expressions In The Chinese Cultural Context: How Ratings And Reviews Tell A Different Story, Mousumi Bose, Lei Ye Jan 2022

The Complexity Of Understanding Online Product Evaluation Expressions In The Chinese Cultural Context: How Ratings And Reviews Tell A Different Story, Mousumi Bose, Lei Ye

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Most online retail websites provide consumers the opportunity to elicit feedback about products and services through ratings and reviews. Extant research has suggested that product ratings and reviews may be reflective of consumers’ cultural views. Little research exists that discusses this lack of consistency between ratings and reviews beyond that suggested by Hofstede’s cultural typology. This research shows that although consumers may provide higher ratings, review texts provide a different perspective: consumers use reviews to provide negative feedback, however, with some tempering nuances.

Rainbow-Washing Away Customers: Does The Consumer’S Perception Of Rainbow-Washing Affect Purchasing Behavior?, Ashley N. Johns, Sindy Chapa, Nakima Brooks, Holly Coleman, Maya Dubois Jan 2022

Rainbow-Washing Away Customers: Does The Consumer’S Perception Of Rainbow-Washing Affect Purchasing Behavior?, Ashley N. Johns, Sindy Chapa, Nakima Brooks, Holly Coleman, Maya Dubois

AMTP Proceedings 2022

In this study, researchers will test to see the effects rainbow-washing has on consumers’ intent to purchase. Rainbow-washing is a new marketing technique in which companies implement different initiatives to appeal to the LGBTQ+ community while not genuinely investing in the community itself. To test if rainbow-washing is correlated to a consumer’s desire to purchase, a survey was distributed using nonprobability sampling to 38 participants. Of the sample, less than half identified as members of the target community (LGBTQ+). As a result, it was concluded there is no significance between consumer attitudes towards rainbow-washing and their intention to purchase. However, …

Love At First Touch: How Swiping Vs. Typing Changes Online Dating Decision-Making, Farhana Nusrat, Yaniu Huang, Cait Lamberton

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Online dating is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States. Due to its increasing popularity, various dimensions of online dating have been studied in recent years. However, no research has explored how the type of digital platforms used impacts online dating. In this research, we investigate how the use of different platforms (computers vs. smartphones) can influence customers’ decision-making process in the context of online dating. Through multiple studies, we demonstrate that while using their computers (vs. smartphones) to evaluate dating profiles, customers will prioritize the inner attributes of the person (e.g., personality and compatibility). Moreover, the effect …

Implications and recommendations for college and departmental websites concerning how they can best assist prospective students in choosing a college major are highlighted throughout the paper. With its focus on process, this paper concretely shows how colleges and their academic departments can effectively leverage digital marketing and the consumer decision process to facilitate the college major choice process.

The Effect Of Resource Scarcity On Consumer Ethical Behavior, Todd C. Haderlie Jr, Jaehoon Lee Jan 2022

The Effect Of Resource Scarcity On Consumer Ethical Behavior, Todd C. Haderlie Jr, Jaehoon Lee

AMTP Proceedings 2022

We identify a novel relationship between scarcity and ethical behavior. When resource scarcity is made salient, consumers engage in less ethical behavior. Furthermore, the effect of resource scarcity on ethical behavior is stronger for consumers with high (vs. low) levels of the inclusion of others in the self (IOS).

Exploring The Effects Of Linguistic Elements Of Social Media Corporate Apologies On Consumer Responses, Laurel Johnston Jan 2022

Exploring The Effects Of Linguistic Elements Of Social Media Corporate Apologies On Consumer Responses, Laurel Johnston

AMTP Proceedings 2022

In the current landscape of social media, consumers bring product and service failure complaints directly to brands daily. Whether such complaints are routine or hold potential for great consequence, social media’s viral nature means any brand-to-consumer interaction could become a public crisis if handled incorrectly. Corporate apologies are an effective strategy to mitigate negative audience sentiment and reduce online interactions that damage brand reputation. This study will manipulate previously identified but largely untested linguistic components of corporate apologies on Twitter, including personal greetings and closures and directives, to test their effects on consumers’ perceived apology sincerity, forgiveness, purchase intentions, and …

Impact Of Model Gender On The Effectiveness Of Advertisements Targeted At Older Viewers: An Analysis In The Context Of Ageing, Corinne Chevalier, Gaelle M. Moal Jan 2022

Impact Of Model Gender On The Effectiveness Of Advertisements Targeted At Older Viewers: An Analysis In The Context Of Ageing, Corinne Chevalier, Gaelle M. Moal

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Advertising efficiency relies partly on the viewer’s identification to the model used in the ad and model gender facilitates the identification process. Relying on gerotranscendance theory (Tornstam, 2009), we assume that gender identification is not as important to seniors as it used to be when they were younger and that the gender of the model will have no effect on variables of the persuasion process. The results of a survey on 512 seniors aged 60 to 85 reveals that the model’s gender has little impact on the perception of ads by senior viewers. However, matching product gender and model gender …

Defining Health Care Marketing, Gary Futrell Jan 2022

Defining Health Care Marketing, Gary Futrell

AMTP Proceedings 2022

A review of the leading textbooks published for health care marketing courses shows that they do not adequately define the disciple. This paper promotes the use of the two-word form of health care and defines health care marketing as the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, & exchanging any good, service, or idea; performed to restore, maintain, or enhance the well-being of an individual or population. This paper fills a gap in the literature by providing linguistic and practical justification for using the two-word form of health care and connects the modern wellness paradigm of health …

Communicating Temporary Brick-And-Mortar Store Closures During Covid-19 Lockdowns In The Uk, Zsofia Toth, Tristan Emerson, Nikolina Koporcic, Sally Mckechnie, Muzna Shehzad

AMTP Proceedings 2022

This research examines how retail businesses from central England’s Midlands region communicated temporary closure of their brick-and-mortar stores via shop window messages during the first two Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020. These closure notices represent important forms of crisis communication for businesses, which display various levels of information, emotional language, or functional intent, and offer signposts for business continuity. 417 shop window closure notices were photographed - 167 and 250 from the first and second periods of lockdown respectively. In order to analyse the data, a multimodal social semiotic framework was employed, allowing the study to examine the language, design and …

The Corporate Remedy Strategies For Product-Related And Business Ethical Misdeeds, Lei Huang Jan 2022

The Corporate Remedy Strategies For Product-Related And Business Ethical Misdeeds, Lei Huang

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Firms take various approaches to mitigate the negative impacts from the misdeeds and repair the damages of the consequences. The current study examines the moderation role of two types of misdeed, business ethics or product performance related, in the relationship between three major crisis remedy strategies and the purchase intentions for both current and potential consumers. The results from 440 participants suggest that a promptness apology is important for current consumers but not for potential consumers. More importantly, the response plan has less impact on the current consumers when a misdeed is business ethics related than product performance related while …

Does The Sponsorship Of Sports Entities By Gambling Organizations Conform To The Set Of Benefits As Conceptualized In The Model Of Sports Sponsorship?, Sam Fullerton, Michael Mccall, Ronald Dick

AMTP Proceedings 2022

One recent study produced a model that was structured based upon the benefits derived by four parties that are impacted by a sponsor’s decision to engage in the sponsorship of a sports entity. These sports entities may be a team, a league, an organization, an athlete, an event, or a sports venue. The interactions among the four categories of beneficiaries resulted in 12 discrete linkages. A total of 159 potential benefits, some tangible and some intangible, were documented. A second study examined the impact of a recent SCOTUS ruling that declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) to …

Anti-Consumption: A Preliminary Examination Of A Set Of Social Considerations That Impact A Consumer’S Decision To ‘Punish’ Marketers Deemed To Be Engaging In Irresponsible Behavior, Tammy Mccullough, Ania Izabela Rynarzewska, Sam Fullerton

AMTP Proceedings 2022

A sample of 175 students from two universities provided insight regarding the rationale for engaging in anti-consumption behavior. A review of the literature identified myriad reasons why consumers engage in personal boycotts. This study examines 12 of these reasons: environmental concerns, political stance, religious orientation/affiliation, country-of-origin (COO), attitudes towards the LGBTQ community, the size of the marketer, the use of disliked celebrity endorsers, the use of offensive marketing tactics (e.g. advertising), animal cruelty including the use of live animal testing, perceived violations of basic human rights, employing a nonunionized workforce, and employment-related discrimination based on the gender, age, race, religion, …

Awareness Marketing: Cause Marketing Without Contribution, Elizabeth A. Minton, Frank Cabano Jan 2022

Awareness Marketing: Cause Marketing Without Contribution, Elizabeth A. Minton, Frank Cabano

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Much research has examined the benefit of brands that participate in cause marketing initiatives and give a portion of proceeds or product to a charity. However, what has been lacking from this investigation is how consumers respond when brands raise awareness for a cause but do not take any further action to contribute resources to the cause – what we term awareness marketing. Through five studies, we examine awareness marketing specifically among the potentially divisive context of social justice causes. We show that consumers with higher levels of religiosity are more likely to support products marketed with awareness marketing, that …

The Fluidity Of Gender Roles On The Northern Great Plains 1890-1950, Stefanie Michele Pililani Aulner Jan 2022

The Fluidity Of Gender Roles On The Northern Great Plains 1890-1950, Stefanie Michele Pililani Aulner

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

The relative infancy of the Northern Great Plains social environment compared to the well-established social systems of the United States east of the Mississippi fostered growth and allowed the redefinition of women’s gender roles. Without the strict social policing of women’s roles within the frontier society, women could redefine their gender roles. Women not only redefined their gender roles but made independent decisions based on their current situations and navigated within the already assigned societal gender roles. In this instance, women, often oppressed and constrained by societal expectations and obligations, simultaneously possessed the choice to navigate and make decisions within …

Settler Colonizers’ Sense Of History On The Northern Plains Before And After The Turn Of The Nineteenth Century, Aaron Loren Barth Jan 2022

Settler Colonizers’ Sense Of History On The Northern Plains Before And After The Turn Of The Nineteenth Century, Aaron Loren Barth

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

This dissertation argues that it is time to push the understanding of the US Oceti Sakowin wars in different directions, particularly in the direction that stops obsessing and constantly revisiting the officer and soldier accounts. More particularly, it is argued, it is time to push in the direction that looks at how and why settler colonizers – scholars, artists, historians, poets – before and after the turn of the nineteenth century contemplated and argued over various ways to interpret the 1854- 1891 US Oceti Sakowin wars. Through this, they infused a sense of history into the landscape of the northern …

Exploration Of Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Athletic Identity, Leah C. Oldham Jan 2022

Exploration Of Intercollegiate Student-Athletes’ Athletic Identity, Leah C. Oldham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Student-athletes encounter experiences that can cause their identity process and self-concept to be disturbed. Even though athletic identities are strong among intercollegiate athletes, some encounter identity-threatening events that interrupt their identity process, negatively affecting their athletic identity. The present study adds to current research on the athletic identity of student-athletes by examining the athletic identity and self-esteem of student-athletes to determine if a redshirt season is a positive (identity-enhancing) or negative (identity-threatening) event. The intersectionality of age, race, gender, and ethnicity are examined to understand if multiple identities influence the experience of a redshirt season. Results reveal that a redshirt …

Wetland Mitigation Performance Standards: The Intersection Of Science, Practice, And Policy, Jessica Anne Bryzek Jan 2022

Wetland Mitigation Performance Standards: The Intersection Of Science, Practice, And Policy, Jessica Anne Bryzek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Wetland ecosystem spatial extent and integrity have declined due to conversion to anthropogenic land uses. Wetland mitigation offsets the impact on wetlands encountered during development by restoring a previously degraded wetland or creating new wetlands. This activity creates an ecosystem service market where wetland impacts (debits) are offset by wetland restoration/creation (credits). Mitigation aims to replace functions provided by aquatic resources lost during development. Post-restoration monitoring criteria known as performance standards are used to evaluate and verify restored wetland functionality and regulate mitigation credit release. Therefore, performance standards are vital in ascertaining wetland restoration techniques and mitigation processes. In Chapter …

Characterizing The Effects Of Solvent And Analyte Properties On Ionization Efficiency By Novel Field-Free And Field-Enabled Ionization Techniques, Kinkini Udara Jayasundara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years the mass spectrometry (MS) area of field and/or direct analysis has grown dramatically. As a result, field-portable and miniaturized mass spectrometers, introduced only a few years ago, are proliferating. A highly desired feature for field-portable MS, or in-field analysis, is the ability to use ionization techniques requiring very little sample preparation as well as an ability to generate the ions under ambient conditions. Recently, a new ambient ionization technique termed vibrating sharp-edge spray ionization (VSSI) has been introduced which overcomes the field-portable limitations of other spray-based methods including the requirements for auxiliary components (e.g., nebulizing gas and …

The key to this process is the creation of time-dependent models that analyze complicated service systems and produce efficient staff schedules, allowing organizations to strike a balance between delivering high-quality services and avoiding unnecessary personnel costs. There is a need, particularly in the healthcare sector, to encourage effective management of an EMS, where the likelihood of survival is strongly correlated with the response …

Three Essays On Railroad Safety Analysis Using Non-Parametric Statistical Methods, Neeraj Dhingra Jan 2022

Three Essays On Railroad Safety Analysis Using Non-Parametric Statistical Methods, Neeraj Dhingra

Transportation Logistics and Finance

he FRA mandated railroad companies to install a new monitoring system known as Positive Train Control (PTC). This system overlays sensors, signals, and transponders over existing track and other wayside infrastructure. Technologists designed the system to prevent accidents mainly caused by human negligence and communications. However, PTC will not address track-related defects, which is the second dominant cause of accidents. A new track monitoring system called Railway Autonomous Inspection Localization System (RAILS) was proposed to address track-related accidents. RAILS is based on low-cost sensor technology that identifies defect symptoms, ranks their severity, classifies defect types, and localizes their positions. So, …
