“The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling”: Why Inciting Mass Psychological Panics Should Trigger Legal Liability, Jason P. Kight, David Scott
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
With a twenty four hour, seven days a week news cycle and social media leaders, activists and other groups have more access to the public than ever before. This access can lead to events known as mass psychological panics that can have devastating outcomes. In this paper two main cases were examined: Harold Camping and his religious zeal that led to a mass psychological panic, and QAnon which led to the storming of the US Capitol in January of 2021. This paper posits that there should be a federal statute criminalizing incitement via social media.

In 2015, signatories to the Paris Agreement agreed to the goal of keeping global temperature rise this century to well below 2°C above preindustrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5°C. Although the adoption of the Paris Agreement was in many ways a political triumph, seven years later many climate advocates are presenting the Paris target to judicial bodies as the de facto legal standard for fundamental rights protection in climate change cases. Yet, the history leading up to the signatories’ ultimate adoption of the Paris Agreement target suggests that the target is …

Boron Isotopes In Boninites Document Rapid Changes In Slab Inputs During Subduction Initiation, Hong-Yan Li, Xiang Li, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Chao Zhang, Yi-Gang Xu
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
How subduction-related magmatism starts at convergent plate margins is still poorly understood. Here we show that boron isotope variations in early-formed boninites from the Izu-Bonin arc, combined with radiogenic isotopes and elemental ratios document rapid (~0.5 to 1 Myr) changes in the sources and makeup of slab inputs as subduction begins. Heterogeneous hornblende-granulite facies melts from ocean crust gabbros ± basalts fluxed early melting to generate low silica boninites. Hydrous fluids from slab sediments and basalts later fluxed the low silica boninites mantle source to produce high silica boninites. Our results suggest that initially the uppermost parts of the slab …

Theorists of justice have long imagined a decision-maker capable of acting wisely in every circumstance. Policymakers seldom live up to this ideal. They face well-understood limits, including an inability to anticipate the societal impacts of state intervention along a range of dimensions and values. Policymakers cannot see around corners or address societal problems at their roots. When it comes to regulation and policy-setting, policymakers are often forced, in the memorable words of political economist Charles Lindblom, to “muddle through” as best they can.
Powerful new affordances, from supercomputing to artificial intelligence, have arisen in the decades since Lindblom’s 1959 article …

Wax Models In Barcelona: From University Anatomical Sculptors To Makers Of Dermatological Waxworks En Ceroplastics, The Science Of Wax, Ed. Roberta Ballestriero, Owen Burke And Francesco Maria Galassi, Chloe Sharpe
Capítulos de libros
The art of wax modelling or ceroplastics has an ancient origin, from early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. It was re-discovered between the 13th - 14th centuries in Florence with the cult of votive offerings; with the advent of Neoclassicism it extended into a more scientific environment, flourishing in the study of normal and pathological anatomy, obstetrics, zoology and botany. On the 7th and 8th June 2019, the 2nd edition of the International Congress on Wax Modelling took place in the University of Padua. The meeting followed that held in September 2017 at the Gordon Museum of Pathology, King's College …

The large production volume combined with the high lignocellulose content makes elephant dung an attractive and underutilized biomass resource, but also presents waste management problems for elephant orphanages. This study explored the conversion of elephant dung into biochars by slow pyrolysis at 500°C for the recovery of phosphate. The unmodified biochar (BC500) had a specific surface area (SBET) of 62.5 m2×g-1 with point of zero charge (pHPZC) of 7.7. Biochar modification with MgCl2 (MgBC500) and FeCl3 (FeBC500) by pre-pyrolysis treatment affected the SBET (48.7 m2×g-1 and 259.4 m2×g-1, respectively) and pHPZC (8.7 and 3.3, respectively). In FeBC500, Fe was present …

Room-temperature ferromagnetism was successfully induced in carbon. Carbon nanofibers were fabricated using sequential electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The morphologies, crystal structures, chemical bonding states and magnetic properties were characterized over three different weight ratios which were 10:0, 7:3 and 6:4 of PAN/PVP. The carbon nanofibers obtained after pyrolysis of polymer fibers were placed inside a tube furnace using a three steps process: stabilization, carbonization, and activation at 800℃. XRD patterns indicated the amorphous structure of carbon. The average diameter of the carbon nanofibers was between 340 nm to 511 nm. Raman analysis was used to determine the …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this paper, we aimed to find the sputtering power most suitable for fabricating anodized TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) with high dimensions (diameter and length). TNTs were synthesized via anodization of Ti films deposited on a glass substrate at varying sputtering power from 50 W to 200 W. The properties of Ti films such as crystallinity, residual stress, and roughness were investigated, which affected the morphology of TNTs. Sputtering power levels of 150 W and 200 W were suitable for TNTs formation via the anodization process in NH4F concentrations from 1.0 wt% to 2.5 wt% due to the increased density and …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogel was successfully prepared by freeze thaw process. Without crosslinking agent, hydrogel was formed by using 3, 5 and 7 consecutive cycles of freeze thaw. Hydrogel can be formed by hydrogen bonding formation between OH-group of sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol throughout network. Scanning electron microscope reported that microstructure of hydrogel was well packed. The interconnect porosity was also observed. Differential scanning calorimetry exhibited that two exothermic peaks at temperature of 110℃ and 225℃ were observed due to evaporation of water molecule and melting temperature of hydrogel, respectively. The swelling behavior was rapidly increased within initial …

Multi-Responsive Rotaxane With Tunable Fluorescence Under Azobenzene-Based Benzoxazine Structure, Sorapat Niyomsin, Suwabun Chirachanchai, Toshikazu Takata
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Rotaxanes are known for the mechanically interlocked molecules for decades. The present work demonstrates a method to prepare multi-responsive rotaxane by conjugating with a multi-responsive supramolecule. Benzoxazine dimers, N, N’-bis(3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl) methylamine derivatives, are good models because their simple chemistry. An azobenzene containing benzoxazine with remaining hydroxyl group for further conjugation with rotaxane was designed. The ring opening of rotaxane using fluorescent phenol provides benzoxazine dimer with metal ion responsive and fluorescent properties. Based on this concept, light responsive benzoxazine conjugated with rotaxane system shows light, metal ion and rotaxane shuttling responsiveness which can be followed by fluorescent signals. The present …

Bipolar Disorder is an affective disorder characterized by moderate to extreme lability in emotional states where individuals experience symptoms of mania, hypomania, mixed mood and/or depression. Individuals may be diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, which is hallmarked by extreme mood lability between mood states of mania and depression. Alternatively, bipolar II disorder is distinguished by fluctuating hypomanic and depressive episodes (DSM-V, 2014). Cyclothymia is defined by shifting mood states that are less severe than bipolar I or II. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI, 2017), 2.8% of adults in the United States are diagnosed with a type …

Evolving Beyond Reasonable Accommodations Towards "Off-Shelf Accessible" Workplaces And Campuses, Karla Gilbride
American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
One of the hallmarks of the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), which prohibits discrimination in the workplace on the basis of disability, is that it defines “discrimination” to include “not making reasonable accommodations to the known mental or physical limitations of an otherwise qualified individual with a disability.” This concept of reasonable accommodation was seen as innovative in two ways. It recognized that employers must sometimes take affirmative steps or make adaptations to afford individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to apply for and perform jobs. And it identified the failure to take such affirmative steps as a type of …

A Qualitative Study Exploring The Impact Of Anxiety On The Sibling Relationship, Maria Hays
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Sibling relationships are one of the most critical elements of interpersonal functioning for children. The sibling relationship has been found to be an important foundation for the development of relationships in general, as siblings spend more time together than with anyone else. Mental health of a sibling has been found to impact the quality of the relationship; however, although anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders in children, there is a dearth of literature on its impact on the sibling relationship. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions siblings have about their experiences of …
