ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

John Dewey once said that “education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process.” Accordingly, pedagogical processes should not simply be conducted by traditional lecturing, but rather, they should be constructive processes that gradually build the meaning-making process of the children through their active participation. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest materials that integrate English learning and LSE that are specifically designed for Indonesian children. As a follow-up project from the previous program, the current community service focuses on the implementation of life skills education (LSE) by integrating LSE with English learning in …

Figurative language is a commonly used strategy in interpersonal interaction. Although previous studies have explored the use of figurative language in various materials, its use in commencement speeches based on the speaker’s professional background has not been investigated. This study used 20 commencement speeches as material to examine the differences in the use of the figurative language of entertainers and business people invited to speak at commencement ceremonies. The results revealed that figurative language is pervasive in commencement speeches; the more frequently used figure of speech types were metaphor, repetition, personification, and parallelism. Moreover, speakers from the entertainment industry significantly …

Internship Experiences Of Pre-Service Teachers: A Case Study Of Efl Korean Students In The Philippines, Gina B. Ugalingan, Aileen Bautista, Rochelle Irene Lucas

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Various studies on the different experiences of pre-service teachers who are non-native speakers of English emerged to strengthen the teaching curriculum and empower them to be equipped as they take the role of classroom teachers. Some foreign students even study abroad to strengthen their proficiency in the English language; more so, other teacher education programs offer internships abroad. Studies support that teaching internship experiences impact shaping novice teachers’ identity (Borg, 2003; Kim & Cho, 2014; Ulla, 2016). This case study describes the teaching experiences of eight Korean pre-service teachers during their internship. The participants were students under the program of …

Journal of Bioresource Management

The global livestock sector is expanding at a faster rate than any other agricultural sub-sector. It employs approximately 1.3 billion people and accounts for approximately 40 % of global agricultural output. This industry is one of the most damaging sectors to the world's increasingly scarce water resources, contributing to water pollution from animal wastes, hormones, antibiotics, chemicals from tanneries, pesticides, and fertilizers used to spray feed crop. Climate change harms livestock productivity by changing ecosystem services i.e. water availability, forage quality and quantity, diseases outbreak, and animals stress due to heat shock and reduction of livestock diversity and breeds. Ecosystem …

Schooling With Racial Equity At The Center: A Case Study Exploration Of One Elementary School-Based Leadership Team, Michael L. Baulier

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Pre-K–12 schooling in the United States has historically and systemically promoted ideas of Black inferiority while safeguarding the characteristics of white supremacy culture embedded in all aspects of the education system. The notion of white dominance is evident throughout studies, policies, and reports from district, state, and federal officials who have been tasked with closing the achievement gap but instead have assigned blame to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students and families. An analysis of the history of U.S. public education reveals not a single achievement gap but multiple opportunity gaps that perpetuate the subjugation of Black students …

A Conserved Oxalyl-Coenzyme A Decarboxylase In Oxalate Catabolism, Ninghui Cheng, Vincent Paris, Xiaolan Rao, Xiaoqiang Wang, Paul A Nakata

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

The ability to biosynthesize oxalic acid can provide beneficial functions to plants; however, uncontrolled or prolonged exposure to this strong organic acid results in multiple physiological problems. Such problems include a disruption of membrane integrity, mitochondrial function, metal chelation, and free radical formation. Recent work suggests that a CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism plays a critical role in regulating tissue oxalate concentrations in plants. Although this CoA-dependent pathway of oxalate catabolism is important, large gaps in our knowledge of the enzymes catalyzing each step remain. Evidence that an oxalyl-CoA decarboxylase (OXC) catalyzes the second step in this pathway, accelerating the …

Extended Vocal Repertoire Of The Bromeligenous Treefrog Scinax Belloni (Anura:Hylidae), Davi Lee Bang, Izadora Vidigal, Pedro Marinho, Ariovaldo Antonio Giaretta

Neotropical Biodiversity

Scinax belloni is a small bromeligenous treefrog that lives in the mountainous areas of southeastern Brazil. The call of the species has been previously described, but recently gathered data revealed an unreported acoustic unit that we describe herein. Intraspecific variation within the species call was also updated based on an increased sample size. The call is composed of two types of multipulsed notes: a short note, which is in agreement with the previous description, and a trill note that is emitted in association with the short note. The trill note was likely not reported in the previous description because of …

First Record Of A Population Of Rose-Ringed Parakeet (Psittacula Krameri) In Argentina, Mario L. Chatellenaz, Juan M. Fernandez, María L. Thomann

Neotropical Biodiversity

The Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), native to India, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa, is considered one of the most invasive bird species. It has been recorded in 37 countries, in some of which it was originally introduced as a pet. It has become an agricultural pest and a threat to native birds in many countries. In South America, populations of this species were only known to exist in Venezuela and the Caribbean Islands. We report the finding of a small reproductive population of Rose-ringed parakeets in the city of Corrientes, in northeastern Argentina. We provide information on its observed feeding …

Integrating Biochemical And Behavioral Approaches To Develop A Bait To Manage The Invasive Yellow Paper Wasp Polistes Versicolor (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) In The Galápagos Islands, Mariana Bulgarella, Alejandro E. Mieles, Jacqueline Rodríguez, Yesenia Campaña, Georgia M. Richardson, Robert A. Keyzers, Charlotte E. Causton, Philip J. Lester

Neotropical Biodiversity

It is estimated that more than 500 species of insects have been introduced to the Galápagos Islands via human activities. One of these insect invaders is the yellow paper wasp, Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), a social wasp native to continental South America. In Galápagos, these wasps are voracious predators of insect larvae, compete with native species for insect prey or for floral resources and are a human nuisance. Wasp suppression methods currently in use are inefficient and attract non-target species, calling for the development of species-specific attractants that can be used in baits to lure and kill wasps. To …

Contribution To The Knowledge Of Non-Native Fishes In Reservoirs In The Magdalena River Basin: The Study Case Piedras Blancas Reservoir, Daniel Restrepo Santamaria, Daniel Valencia-Rodríguez, Juliana Herrera-Pérez, Sebastián Muñoz-Duque, Andrés Felipe Galeano, Luz Jiménez-Segura

Neotropical Biodiversity

The habitat fragmentation caused by reservoir construction in different aquatic systems in the Magdalena River basin is a latent threat to the diversity of fishes and aquatic environments in the Andean region of Colombia. Contributing to the knowledge about how fish assemblages are formed in these scenarios is fundamental for the management and decision-making on the aquatic resources of the basin. In this communication, we describe the results of a fish characterization in the area of influence of the Piedras Blancas reservoir, a high Andean reservoir built for hydroelectric power generation. Only three species of fish that make up the …

Medical Ethics Principles Underscore Advocating For Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, C Mary Healy, Lara S Savas, Ross Shegog, Rebecca Lunstroth, Sally W Vernon

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Studies have consistently shown that vaccination rates against human papillomavirus (HPV) lag far behind other adolescent vaccinations recommended at the same age, resulting in exposing adolescents to unnecessary future risk of infection, and genital and head and neck cancers. Studies also have demonstrated that a major barrier to vaccination is lack of a strong provider recommendation. Factors that providers offer for failing to give a strong recommendation range from perception that the child is not at risk or the need to explain that the vaccine is not mandated (lack of equity and justice) or respect for parental autonomy. We look …

Biología Reproductiva De Hatcheria Macraei (Bagre De Torrente) En El Área Natural Protegida La Ciénaga, En El Centro Oeste De Argentina, Agustina Valenzuela, Fabricio Gómez, Juan Carlos Acosta

Neotropical Biodiversity

The northwestern region of Argentina has several gaps in ichthyogeographic knowledge and there are still bodies of water without records of the species that inhabit them. When planning mitigation projects or conservation or management actions, little knowledge of the biology of a species presents itself as a restriction. Therefore, the objective is to know the reproductive biology of the torrent catfish (H. macraei) in the Natural Protected Area La Ciénaga, San Juan, with the purpose of generating basic information as a tool for the future management of these populations. The torrent catfish, Hatcheria macraei (Girard, 1855) is a Siluriformes that …

Endodontic Management Of An Unusual Mandibular First Molar With Six Canals: A Case Report And Systematic Review, Sarah Ahmad, Syed Mukhtar -Un- Nisar Andrabi, Ashok Kumar, Surendra Kumar Mishra, Rajendra Kumar Tewari

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

The permanent mandibular first molar is frequently involved in conventional root canal treatment due to its function and position in the oral cavity. Additional root canals mandate accurate diagnosis and conservative management to prevent any procedural errors. The first independent middle mesial canal incidence was verified in mandibular molars in 1974, with a global incidence of 10.8–27.0%. Reporting of the middle distal canal in the endodontic literature is scarce, with an incidence of 0.2–3%. The present case report describes the endodontic management of an unusual permanent mandibular first molar with three canals in the mesial and distal roots, diagnosed with …

Living By Religion, Playing By Law: Early Glimpses Of The Ban On Triple Talaq, Kalindi Kokal

Socio-Legal Review

The Supreme Court of India declared triple talaq, a type of Islamic divorce, as unconstitutional in 2017. Following that, in 2019, the Parliament enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which criminalised the pronouncement of triple talaq. Triple talaq as a form of divorce continues to hold legitimacy under the uncodified religious law that Muslims in India abide by in their everyday life. What, then, is the impact of the criminalisation of this practice at the level of the community? What does intervention by the criminal justice system mean for justice in inter-personal disputes that are …

Racism And Resilience: Counter-Narratives Of Asian International College Students In The Age Of Covid-19, Katrina Liu, Richard Miller, Sharolyn D. Pollard-Durodola, Lei Ping

The Qualitative Report

Using Asian Critical Race Theory and Resilience Theory, this qualitative study explores how Asian international college students experienced racism before and after the eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and how they developed and used resilience to counteract that racism. Eleven Asian participants shared their counter-narratives through semi-structured interviews. Results reveal that, before the pandemic, participants were regularly subjected to racist acts and attitudes grounded in a deficit view of Asians that treated them as inscrutable foreigners, blamed them as individuals for perceived shortcomings in their home countries, dismissed their expertise outside of technical STEM fields, and failed to recognize their …

Bowes, Rochelle H. Holm, Daymond Talley, Ray Yeager, Aruni Bhatnagar, Ted Smith, Arvind Varsani, Rolf U. Halden, Matthew Scotch

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We describe the successful detection of human, porcine and canine picornaviruses (CanPV) in sewage sludge (at each stage of treatment) from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, using Pan-enterovirus amplicon-based long-read Illumina sequencing. Based on publicly available sequence data in GenBank, this is the first detection of CanPV in the USA and the first detection globally using wastewater-based epidemiology. Our findings also suggest there might be clusters of endemic porcine enterovirus (which have been shown capable of causing systemic infection in porcine) circulation in the USA that have not been sampled for around two decades. Our findings highlight the value of WBE coupled …
