Amplifying Arab American Heritage Language Students' Voices: A Multiple Case Study On Translanguaging Practices And Identity Negotiation In University Arabic Classrooms, Lina Gomaa
Dissertations and Theses
Little research has been conducted on Arab American students at universities and specifically, in the heritage language studies field. The experiences of Arab American heritage language (AAHL) students are significantly less examined than those of other heritage language students. Arabic language curricula and instructional practices in universities tend to privilege the teaching of Modern Standard Arabic over dialects, which marginalizes heritage learners' prior knowledge of the Arabic culture and its language, specifically Arabic dialects used in their home communities. These phenomena can create a non-affirming learning experience for these students. As such, in this study, I addressed these questions:
- To …
The Multiplicity Of Grammatical Faces In Case Issue Between Sibawaieh And Late Grammarians, Mutasem Basem Gwadareh
The Multiplicity Of Grammatical Faces In Case Issue Between Sibawaieh And Late Grammarians, Mutasem Basem Gwadareh
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
This research deals with the difference between Sibawaieh’s making in the Multiplicity of the grammatical faces in the case issues. And the making of late grammarians in that Multiplicity. It stands at the reality of the transformation from multiple faces to monotheism and reveals the causes of this multiplicity and how it appeared in contextual and linguistic conditions, and shows how it absent and defaced by all the late grammarians. The research shows that both makings relate to the nature of the language whose grammar was written, and the extent to which its people at all times need that plurality. …
Critically Teaching Social Studies Using An Ethnic Studies Framework: Native American Representation In The Elementary School Curriculum, Erich Schottstaedt
Critically Teaching Social Studies Using An Ethnic Studies Framework: Native American Representation In The Elementary School Curriculum, Erich Schottstaedt
Education | Master's Theses
The research problem this qualitative study addresses is how Native American history, and European settler colonialism, can be critically taught in a developmentally appropriate manner, avoiding eurocentrism and whitewashing. Most research on Ethnic Studies and teacher preparation is focused on the high school level. Traditional elementary education tends to both romanticize and decontextualize Native American history, focusing on Native Americans as people who only lived in the distant past. Colonialism is often sanitized in Social Studies curriculum, with the perspectives of European settlers as the dominant frame of reference, where Native Americans are seen as secondary actors (Styres, 2019; Valdez, …

Classification Of Verb Forms In The Work Of Al-Mu’Izzi Tasrif Al-Af’Al, Akbar Kazakbayev
The Light of Islam
This article provides information about the work of Al-Mu’izzi Tasrif al-Af’al, dedicated to the forms of verbs in Arabic. The Fund of Manuscripts of the Institute of Oriental Studies named after Abu Raykhan Beruni of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan has 7 seven manuscripts of Mu’izzi’s work. Al-Mu’izzi’s work consists of four main sections, which, in turn, are divided into chapters, that is, smaller groups. The first chapter describes the changes in conjugating verbs in the past, present, and future tenses and the imperative mood. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of regular verbs, the third chapter …
Aftermaths Of Opposition: Effectiveness Of Repression Against Reformist Islamists In Saudi Arabia, Londyn Lorenz
Aftermaths Of Opposition: Effectiveness Of Repression Against Reformist Islamists In Saudi Arabia, Londyn Lorenz
Honors Theses
Saudi Arabia has long been considered a religious, political, and economic hub of the Middle East and North Africa as the home of the two holiest cities in Islam: Mecca and Medina. The kingdom’s leaders, the Al Saud family, have relied on their Islamic clout to remain in power since the 1700s, but their Islamic credentials were called into question following their allowance of American troops on Saudi soil and alliance with Western ideals during and following the Gulf War of the 1990s. Islamist outrage against the throne poured out across the nation, bringing demands for political change and increased …
Pendulums Of Personhood? Exploring The Multitudes Of Immigrant Womanhood In Spanish-Maghrebi Literature, Kaitlyn C. Sisco
Pendulums Of Personhood? Exploring The Multitudes Of Immigrant Womanhood In Spanish-Maghrebi Literature, Kaitlyn C. Sisco
Honors Theses
Often considered articulations of in-between-ness and bearers of fraught selfhoods, the work of Spanish-Maghrebi authors has been widely debated in literary fields, with academics arguing that it constitutes a largely homogenous set of texts about the standard immigrant experience. However, by placing these texts in a single category, such arguments end up erasing the immensely varied identities expressed and represented by Spanish-Maghrebi authors. This thesis seeks to address this issue by paying particular attention to how Spanish-Maghrebi authors negotiate different types of immigrant subjectivities in their writing. Specifically, I analyze the works of three contemporary Spanish-Maghrebi writers, Najat El Hachmi, …
Terrorism: A Case Study Of The Global Security Threat Of Boko Haram And The Isis Alliance In Nigeria, Emmanuel Ben-Edet
Terrorism: A Case Study Of The Global Security Threat Of Boko Haram And The Isis Alliance In Nigeria, Emmanuel Ben-Edet
Dissertations (2016-Present)
The literature on terrorism indicates that religion, cultures of origin, and environmental factors play globally critical roles in the emergence of terrorist groups worldwide. Terrorists use violence and threats to strike fear and intimidate people and governments into pursuing their religious, political, and ideological goals. One of the deadliest jihadist groups, Boko Haram, emerged in the early 2000s with a jihadist agenda mainly focused on Nigeria’s Islamization. In 2009, it launched violent attacks in Nigeria, which is Africa’s largest economy, and currently controls a large swathe of territory in its northeastern part. In its desire to create a caliphate, Boko …

Decolonizing Female Archetypes: Creating An Oppositional Consciousness In Contemporary Chicana And Iraqi Women’S Fiction, Semah Salih Hussein
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In dominant imperialist discourses, women, such as Iraqi women and Chicanas, have been marginalized in political, social and economic structures and have been manipulated to maintain imperialist exploitation and processes. They have been frozen within certain archetypal configurations. Iraqi women have been misrepresented as victims of their culture and traditions, and Chicanas have been represented in derogatory terms or excluded from mainstream hierarchies of representation. This study examines some counternarratives and oppositional subjectivities/ consciousnesses provided by Iraqi and Chicana women writers through their utilization of the legacy of a number of fictional and historical female figures. The primary texts analyzed …

Zinā In The Criminal Legislation Act (1999-2000): An Evaluation Of The Implication For Muslim Women's Right In Nigeria, Paul Orerhime Akpomie
Theses and Dissertations
The research engages in an exploration of human rights in Islam. Human rights issues are then contrasted with international law positions. The data gotten is then used for investigating women’s human rights issues in Shariʾa penal tradition regarding zinā (adultery) in Nigeria. The re-emergence of Sharia penal codes adopted by 12 Northern states in Nigeria in 1999 as an operative Islamic law has sparked concerns about rulings amounting to stoning to death in several cases of zinā. These events raised concerns about Shariʾa penal traditions’ legality and relationship with other legal traditions operational in Nigeria, a secular political space. …

Specifically, this paper covers the Bedouin's practice of pastoralism, tribalism, and militarism, and explains how Bedouin tribes were able to secure and maintain a dominant position in Arabia despite the pressure of neighboring settlements.
How Ultra Firms In Former Soviet And Yugoslav States Became Political Actors, Alex Pelletier
How Ultra Firms In Former Soviet And Yugoslav States Became Political Actors, Alex Pelletier
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
When you go to a football match one of the first things that you will undoubtedly notice are the ultras. Their loud coordinated chants and movement fill the stadium with energy that would not be there otherwise, and their tifo and flairs add an artist’s touch to the stands. There are ultras for just about every club, and every city in the world, with each group having their own unique identity. The local standing of football clubs, paired with the devoted and organized structure of ultras has seen them become political and military actors across the world. Ultras based in …

Irregular Migration In Morocco: A Case For Constructionism, Mourad Khalil
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Separated by only 14 kilometers of water from Spain, Morocco has become a common destination for many sub-Saharan irregular migrants trying to reach Europe. With a large population of these migrants, Morocco has had to make important decisions on how to manage its irregular migrant population. However, the terrible conditions and regular violations of human rights that irregular migrants in Morocco are subject to lead one to ponder the role that international relations has and the extent to which human rights is a consideration in the policymaking of irregular migration. Applied to the three primary theories of international relations, liberalism, …

Knowledge Through Divine Light: Ghazali’S Notions Of Mystical Cognition, Maisara Maasoum Marzouk
Knowledge Through Divine Light: Ghazali’S Notions Of Mystical Cognition, Maisara Maasoum Marzouk
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Illumination, or knowledge through divine light, is a type of mystical cognition that Abu Hamid Ghazali regarded to be the cause of his rescue from his famous skeptical crisis. According to him, this type of divine knowledge is the apex of knowledge, to which all other sciences are subordinate. The receptive organ of this knowledge is the heart, a divine and cognitive subtlety that is distinct though related to the physical heart. Such is done by removing the veils that obstruct divine light from reaching it by means of the science of unveiling. The disclosure of knowledge that occurs once …

Employ Eloquent Arabic Proverbs In Rhetorical Evidence, Leqaa Adel Hussein
Employ Eloquent Arabic Proverbs In Rhetorical Evidence, Leqaa Adel Hussein
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The Arab proverb is a type of ancient Arabic prose known to the Arabs since the Jahiliyyah, then they employed it in their poems. The Noble Qur’an came and the noble Prophet’s Sunnah followed it by multiplying proverbs in some of their texts. Scholars have used it as a witness from Arabic grammar evidence, but I did not find before as far as I know who employed it A rhetorical witness in teaching Arabic rhetoric, knowing that he reached from rhetoric what other evidence has reached, in addition to being a brief speech that is easy to memorize and employ; …

Some Major Problems of Modern Paremiology
Before getting to the heart of the matter, let us first make an empirical observation: in Arab societies, the recurrence of proverbial statements both at the level of oral communication and at the level of written texts is a reality that is evident. It imposes itself on it. Proverbs occupy a prominent place in Arab societies. For a very long time, the Arabs have manifested their taste for this type of concise, very expressive and full of teachings speech.

The Immutability Of Personal Status Law, Leena Soliman
The Immutability Of Personal Status Law, Leena Soliman
Theses and Dissertations
Personal Status laws in Egypt were first coded in 1920 and were slightly amended throughout time. They were based on religious texts, and hence, are treated as words and teachings of God. Thus, the amendments that were developed throughout history were a result of different interpretations. Throughout the twentieth century, personal status laws in Egypt were enacted by the Egyptian state to build marriage as a more permanent bond as intended by traditional Islamic jurisprudence. Providing women with more marital rights, including more grounds for judicial divorce, was believed to strengthen the marital bond. This paper will trace the insight …
